Eternal Family

Eternal Family

Jude 1:From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James—

To those who have been called by God, who live in the love of God the Father and the protection of Jesus Christ:

May mercy, peace, and love be yours in full measure.

============

Seeing the family as chess pieces, I wondered where I fit. I was the youngest and my siblings had moved on by the time I had questions about life. Was I on the side “for” or “against” the family? Was I a pawn or a rook? Please excuse the chess terms.

  • I wondered where I fit in the family?
  • I wondered if I was part of something or if I needed to fight what was established.
  • I wondered if other families had it “better” than mine.

Jude, brother of JESUS, begins his letter in a somewhat awkward way. He recognized James as his brother and that he was a servant of JESUS. He did not mention his other two brothers, Joses and Simon. James wrote an epistle and so did Jude. Both recognized JESUS as the Savior and saw a different perspective of family.

My Observations:

  • Families can be messy, BUT GOD welcomes all into HIS loving family.
  • Families can have rivalries, fights and divisions, BUT GOD’s family includes love, peace and harmony.
  • Families can have hurt, pain and poor affirmation management, BUT GOD showed HIS love to the extreme by allowing JESUS to die for us and being raised from the dead.

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends, and that’s what JESUS did for you and me. HE became the solution to the biggest problem, namely all humans were lost. HE wanted us back in HIS family so HE did something about the problem. HE became a human and took all the blame humans can dish out.

HE then allowed HIMSELF to be murdered and was raised from the dead. HE now invites anyone to believe HE did all of this out of love. Unfortunately, many twist HIS actions and fall prey to the Enemy who wants people to remain blind to true love. I gladly accept HIS love and HIS invitation to join an eternal family.

Challenge

  • Who does the writer address the letter to?
  • Have you ever questioned where you fit within your own family?
  • Will you join GOD’s eternal family that is filled with love and appreciation for you just as you are today?

Friendships

Friendships

3 John 1: 13 I have so much to tell you, but I do not want to do it with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and then we will talk personally.

15 Peace be with you.

All your friends send greetings. Greet all our friends personally.

============

After spending all day with a friend, I got home and heard a song playing on the radio. I immediately picked up the phone and called my friend. “Weren’t you two together all day? What more do you have to say?” were the questions asked to me.

I couldn’t explain my excitement.

I enjoyed people who would share in my excitement, and I theirs.

It felt good to be understood.

John closes his letter with a burst of friendship. He seemed eager to have a conversation rather than trying to contain all of his thoughts in a letter. He wanted to listen to his friend as well as tell what is going on in his world.

My Observations:

  • Friendships based on GOD’s love help others to endure life’s pain.
  • Solutions from friends who know the LORD enable me to be corrected as well as encouraged.
  • Excitement about what GOD is doing can be heard from friends who seek JESUS as the Savior.

Work friends and organization friends are different. I mean, I have kept in touch with people who I met because we were forced together by the job or the group. These “friendships” enable me to have conversations that are safe. BUT GOD provides friends who can talk about HIM in meaningful ways.

Purpose driven people need encouragement, shared excitement and the bonds of going through the fire together. Those who place their purpose in the world may not be able to share in the understanding of the importance of having purpose in CHRIST. When you and I find people who are willing to pray for us, encourage us and share joy with us, our bonds grow stronger. I am grateful for my friends who call JESUS our LORD and Savior.

Challenge

  • Can you feel the excitement from the writer?
  • Have you ever had friends who could encourage you and share in your dreams the way GOD gave it to you?
  • Will you be a friend to someone who needs encouragement, GOD’s way, and help those who seek HIM by sharing in joy today?

Unstuck on Titles

Unstuck on Titles

3 John 1:I wrote a short letter to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to be their leader, will not pay any attention to what I say. 10 When I come, then, I will bring up everything he has done: the terrible things he says about us and the lies he tells! But that is not enough for him; he will not receive the Christians when they come, and even stops those who want to receive them and tries to drive them out of the church!

11 My dear friend, do not imitate what is bad, but imitate what is good. Whoever does good belongs to God; whoever does what is bad has not seen God.

12 Everyone speaks well of Demetrius; truth itself speaks well of him. And we add our testimony, and you know that what we say is true.

============

“Do you believe in JESUS?” someone laughingly asked me. “I am the head of the deacons and the chairman of the Trustees” I replied. “Yes, but do you believe in JESUS?” was the follow up question that I could have simply said “Yes” to.

  • I was seeking a title in church without knowing it.
  • I wanted to be known for “my” accomplishments.
  • I wanted a resume versus GOD’s kingdom to grow.

John addressed church pride. He provided two opposing examples, namely Diotrephes and Demetrius. The first was the example of arrogance while the latter was the example of truth. One liked church titles, power and to be “heard” while the other built a reputation of serving people with the truth.

My Observations:

  • Having  a title in church is okay as long as I use the title to help organize who does what.
  • Recognizing JESUS as the only one who is the head of the church, makes me less prone to desire what should be HIS.
  • My motive for serving in church should be based on the truth that JESUS rose from the dead and wants everyone to believe in HIS saving power.

Sometimes titles can trip me up. I mean, whether it is corporate or public or church, titles can make me think I am more special than others. If the title gets to my head, then my actions and words begin to leave GOD out and the focus becomes more on “my” title or the brand of the church. BUT GOD wants to be known.

HE wants my words to point to HIM constantly. The whole purpose of gathering together in the first place is to recognize JESUS as the Savior while addressing barriers to this belief. We sing, pray and acknowledge JESUS while not turning into the world. I gladly give up titles to be known for speaking GOD’s truth.

Challenge

  • Who does the writer warn not to imitate?
  • Have you ever wanted a title or wanted to be recognized as a public figure?
  • Will you point your life to CHRIST whether you have a title or not so HE can draw many people to HIMSELF through you today?

Help Along the Trip

Help Along the Trip

3 John 1: My dear friend, you are so faithful in the work you do for other Christians, even when they are strangers. They have spoken to the church here about your love. Please help them to continue their trip in a way that will please God. For they set out on their trip in the service of Christ without accepting any help from unbelievers. We Christians, then, must help these people, so that we may share in their work for the truth.

============

Riding on a bus / van in another country, my expectations were minimal. We were not there as tourists, rather to work as missionaries. The bus broke down in a populated area. So this was an opportunity to get out and street-witness. We spoke to the people about CHRIST and some prayed to believe in HIM. Meanwhile, other people helped fix the bus for us.

  • I did not know what to expect.
  • Staying focused on doing what GOD wanted me to do helped me not focus on the broken down bus.
  • We received help along the trip several other times.

John praises Gaius for his faithfulness. Gaius had created a good reputation that was known throughout the area. John encouraged Gaius to seek other believers who need help in their “trip” so all would share in the work for the truth.

My Observations:

  • My life is a journey that could include GOD or not.
  • The more I seek the world, the less I seek GOD.
  • At some point in my life, I had to see that GOD wanted more out of HIS relationship with me.

Realizing that I am a creation that was made for GOD’s purpose was a surprise to me. I mean, at one point, I thought life was either a random collection of events or that life was a pleasure cruise and GOD was the waiter. In both cases I was wrong. GOD created you and me to be with HIM in a loving relationship.

HIS love is not tainted with sin, but yours and mine is. We can sometimes see GOD as a problem to our pleasure and want to get out of life’s tumultuous ocean and back on the pleasure cruise set up by the enemy. Meanwhile, GOD blesses those who remain in the ocean with boats of safety to help along this trip called life. I am glad GOD has plenty of people who believe and are eager to serve!

Challenge

  • How does the writer hear about the reputation?
  • Do you have a reputation that is associated helping believers in CHRIST to serve others?
  • Will you give more of your life over to GOD so HE can help people believe in HIS SON as the answers to their struggles today?

Live In

Live In

3 John 1:From the Elder—

To my dear Gaius, whom I truly love.

My dear friend, I pray that everything may go well with you and that you may be in good health—as I know you are well in spirit. I was so happy when some Christians arrived and told me how faithful you are to the truth—just as you always live in the truth. Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children live in the truth.

============

“You have to eat specific foods” said the personal trainer at the gym. I wanted to get into heavy weightlifting and found myself unable to get beyond where I was at. People surrounded me and had me start over with technique, food and rest advice.

  • I knew what to do, but it was up to me to actually do something about it.
  • I had to change my lifestyle to be part of this new world to me.
  • I had to be presented with what to do so I could make the change.

John starts off his third letter with a greeting to Gaius. He had heard about the faith Gaius was showing. Gaius was living in “the truth.” John may have talked to him about CHRIST and heard word that Gaius was “living in the truth.”

My Observations:

  • JESUS is the Way “the Truth” and the Life, in which I can receive eternal life.
  • GOD wants me to love my neighbors versus complaining about them and HE wants me to love HIM more than anything I have.
  • Living in CHRIST provides me with all the protection that I need.

Knowing versus doing is a quandary we all face. I mean, GOD placed right from wrong inside all of us by writing HIS law on every heart, yet we choose not to follow HIS ways. BUT HE made a way back to HIM through JESUS.

By accepting CHRIST as my personal Savior, I can follow HIS ways without questioning them or fighting them. HE provides the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside my heart and to guide me  HE provides boundaries for me to live in and I am freed from the pressures of the world and can simply “be.” I gladly abide in what GOD has for me.

Challenge

  • Do you sense the love from the writer?
  • Have you ever known what was right to do, yet you did not or could not bring yourself to do it?
  • Will you seek JESUS by asking HIM, “How do YOU want me to live? And let the HOLY SPIRIT guide you to “live in” HIS ways today?

Joy May Be Full

Joy May Be Full

2 John 1: 12 Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.

============

Going through life’s trials, I wondered when I could have some peace. It seemed like everything was crashing around me. Something inside me said “Go to church”, but I ignored it. A neighbor who rarely spoke to me asked me if I had been to the church on Anthony street. “Why did she ask me that question?” I asked myself. I went and felt joy!

  • My problems were still there, but I felt better.
  • I felt all alone at first, but for a moment, I felt I was part of a family.
  • I had a lot to learn about how to fill the empty space in my heart.

John concludes his second letter with anticipation. He expressed excitement by saying he has a lot to talk about, but he would rather do it face to face. He knew that by meeting together, he would bring good news and so would they. Joy would be made full.

My Observations:

  • Joy is far greater than happiness, because it can be present when problems are there.
  • Gathering with people who seek GOD’s SON can bring me joy, and I can bring joy to them.
  • GOD enjoys when I seek HIS kingdom and HE fills my heart with joy.

Joy keeps my hope strong. I mean, when life deals out its vicious, poisonous blows, I can withstand them with joy. But where does joy come from? GOD! HE is the owner of joy and is ready to hand it out in plentiful portions. HE knows you and I have an adversary who wants to steal our joy and turn against GOD and one another. BUT GOD has an answer.

JESUS sent the HOLY SPIRIT to be the Comforter who resides in me. HE puts out the fire that I am facing with joy. HE leads me to calm places, similar to still waters and HE restores my emotional state so I can have clarity to not blame GOD and to love those around me who may be struggling too. I am glad GOD owns joy and is read to give it to you and me in full.

Challenge

  • What do you think the writer is excited about?
  • Have you ever felt better even though your problems remained?
  • Will you ask GOD for joy over happiness so you can face many difficult situations life may throw at you today?

No Additives Needed

No Additives Needed

2 John 1: Anyone who does not stay with the teaching of Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God. Whoever does stay with the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 So then, if some come to you who do not bring this teaching, do not welcome them in your homes; do not even say, “Peace be with you.” 11 For anyone who wishes them peace becomes their partner in the evil things they do.

============

Seeing the ink stain on the shirt I asked what I should do. “Soak it in soapy water” was the suggestion. I followed the instructions and noticed the ink was dissipating, but not fast enough. I added some bleach to the mixture to speed things up. The shirt was ruined.

  • I thought that by adding something, it would work better.
  • I added something to what was already working.
  • My impatience made me not be able to wait for the solution to work.

John gives a stern warning about people who add more to the teaching of CHRIST. He may have heard about people who wanted to sound special, but were making things up about GOD in order to make themselves look “deep.” He makes it plain that the teaching of CHRIST should stand alone without embellishments.

My Observations:

  • GOD’s Word is simple, but humans want to make it complicated.
  • JESUS became a human to die for the sins of all humans and was raised from the dead and HE does not need us to embellish on these actions.
  • GOD made me special, so I do not have to twist HIS words to be seen as special.

Trying to make the Bible say something that makes “me” special or to manipulate people to get “my” way is dangerous. I mean, when the Bible clearly says one thing, but I add something I am thinking of so people will notice “me” more, I am the one who will be in trouble. BUT GOD has a solution.

HE gives me ways to check if what I am saying about HIM is true. HE provided many writers to reveal HIS SON and the great thing HE did for you and me. If my words point more toward “my” actions versus HIS, then they are leaning towards being false. JESUS paid it all. All to HIM I owe. Sin has left a crimson stain. HE washed it white as snow. I am glad JESUS is the Way, the Truth and the Life!

Challenge:

  • Why does the writer give this warning?
  • Have you ever thought GOD’s message needed “your” help?
  • Will you accept HIS simple message of “believing in JESUS as your Savior” and “loving one another” today?

Not Robbed

Not Robbed

2 John 1: Many deceivers have gone out over the world, people who do not acknowledge that Jesus Christ came as a human being. Such a person is a deceiver and the Enemy of Christ. Be on your guard, then, so that you will not lose what we have worked for, but will receive your reward in full.

============

“Why is he being so nice to me?” was the thought running through my mind. Usually this thug would bully me and this conversation was unexpected. It was cold outside and I had on my snorkel coat. I looked around and saw his goons giggling. Turns out, they were practicing picking my coat pocket.

  • I was distracted by the conversation.
  • I was being robbed because I was distracted.
  • I was a prime target because I wasn’t paying attention.

John gets right down to business in this very short letter. He wanted to address deception that had become plentiful. People were not acknowledging that JESUS came as a human to be murdered by HIS creation and be raised from the dead. A person who speaks against this is a deceiver.

My Observations:

  • GOD wants me to be as wise as the serpent like worldly people, but as harmless as a dove.
  • Believers will receive a full reward, simply by believing that JESUS died and rose from the dead.
  • The reward for my belief is an eternity of peace, no problems and no pain.

Being deceived can rob me. I mean, in the past when I have been deceived, it wasted time, money and effort. “I could have done things differently” is usually the regretful thought I have had after realizing I have been deceived. It’s a bad feeling.

GOD does not want me to have regrets. HE wants me to choose HIM versus being forced to love HIM. When I choose to believe in HIS love, I experience HIS amazing grace. I am glad I receive HIS reward in full, simply by believing in JESUS.

Challenge

  • Who does the writer say is a deceiver?
  • Have you ever been deceived?
  • Will you “be on your guard” by believing that JESUS is GOD and HE became a human to save you and me, and HE was murdered by humans to be raised from the dead to pay for your sins and mine today?

Live In

Live In

2 John 1: How happy I was to find that some of your children live in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. And so I ask you, dear Lady: let us all love one another. This is no new command I am writing you; it is the command which we have had from the beginning. This love I speak of means that we must live in obedience to God's commands. The command, as you have all heard from the beginning, is that you must all live in love.

============

“Once you join the group, you have to follow the rules” a group leader said. I wanted to be part of the prestigious group so I did everything the group said. Once inside I became an ambassador for the group, taunting people to join and to be like “us.”

  • I was totally invested in the group.
  • I believed in the group so much, that I talked about the group’s decisions all the time.
  • I even thought the group was the answer to some problems people were having in life.

John expressed the excitement of seeing “some” people living in the truth of GOD. He could see their lives were different than others because they took GOD’s words to heart and were loving one another. They were no longer living outside of GOD’s love.

My Observations:

  • I may try to leave GOD, BUT HE will never leave me.
  • GOD loves when I live in HIS truth and obey what HE says in HIS word, which is the Bible.
  • Obedience to GOD requires that I surrender my life to HIM which gives me more freedom than I thought.

At one time I thought GOD was a restrainer who couldn’t wait to punish me. I mean, isn’t the Bible a list of rules that hypocrites use to control people? No! GOD revealed HIS love and spoke to many writers to reveal HIS SON, JESUS as the Savior from blindness of HIM.

Sin caused all humans to be blind to GOD’s love and we needed help. JESUS took our punishment and sent the HOLY SPIRIT to open the wyes of believers. This causes you and me to be able to “live in” the truth, obedience and love. I am glad GOD made a way.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer used the words “some of your children?”
  • Have you ever wanted to be part of an organization, so you learned the rules and stuck to them?
  • Will you take whatever battles you are creating and surrender them to GOD so you can live in HIS truth, by obeying HIS commands so you can live in HIS love today?

Not Despised

Not Despised

2 John 1:From the Elder—

To the dear Lady and to her children, whom I truly love. And I am not the only one, but all who know the truth love you, because the truth remains in us and will be with us forever.

May God the Father and Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, give us grace, mercy, and peace; may they be ours in truth and love.

============

At first I felt guilty for not going to church. But I had a good reason for not going. I was working the late shift at the bowling alley and I could not make it to church that early. Soon, I got used to not going. After a while, I complained about churches. “’They’ stay there too long and sing songs that only ’they’ can understand and ’they’ are after ‘my’ money and ’they’ act phony!

·         I developed a cynical view of church on my own.

·         I had a view of “church” that did not include the world.

·         I had no love for the church, but I had plenty of complaints.

John begins his second letter with excitement and love. He explained that there are others who love believers in JESUS as the Savior. He then explains that the truth remains in those who love those who love the LORD. He then said a prayer that GOD grant grace, mercy, peace, truth and love.

My Observations:

·         My complaints about imperfect people showed my lack of character and my flaws.

·         GOD desires that I meet with other imperfect people to love them, just as HE loved me.

·         GOD’s love is pure and is not like human flawed love.

Complaining about the people GOD loves will get me in trouble. I mean, when I follow the world’s ways, I see believers as people who are in the way and who’s love is strange and not enough. BUT GOD has a cure for that type of thinking, namely surrender.

When I surrender my thinking and my life to GOD, I can see the world differently. I see it with HIS love. No power can come up against GOD as HE protects HIS “children” from the Evil One. HE places the truth in those who seek HIS SON as the Savior and guides them to HIS love. I am glad GOD loves you and me.

Challenge

·         Can you feel the love from the writer?

·         Have you ever complained about “church goers” or someone with a title who represents “church?”

·         Will you examine your heart to see if you have the smallest degree of despising the church, so you can ask GOD to open your eyes to HIS love, namely JESUS today?

Prayer

Dear LORD please grant this reader with grace, mercy, peace, truth and love this day! amen

Knowing True Love

Knowing True Love

1 John 5: 18 We know that no children of God keep on sinning, for the Son of God keeps them safe, and the Evil One cannot harm them.

19 We know that we belong to God even though the whole world is under the rule of the Evil One.

20 We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we know the true God. We live in union with the true God—in union with his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and this is eternal life.

21 My children, keep yourselves safe from false gods!

============

“I love this suit!” I exclaimed. But when it got too small and frayed, I wanted something else. “I love this car!” I said. But when years passed, the maintenance made me get less and less excited.

  • Items I said “I loved” tended to wear out and so did my “love” for the item.
  • When problems developed with the item, my love changed.
  • I worried about losing, tearing or breaking the items and I bragged about them whenever I could.

John ends his letter with assurance. He wanted to make sure that believers would be taken care of. He said “We know” so that believers would place the love of GOD in their minds and in their hearts and to turn from seeking “false gods.”

My Observations:

  • Any person, place or thing that I worship over GOD will become a false god to me.
  • JESUS loved us and came to give us understanding so that we may know true love.
  • Experiencing true love makes me change my desires for false love.

“I don’t want that anymore” is confusing to the world. I mean, when the world presents fame and fortune as a good thing, shouldn’t I join in? Maybe not if those things cause me to stop seeking GOD. Unfortunately, the more fortune I have and the more famous I become, the less “time” I have for GOD. Eventually HE is in none of my decisions until I face problems.

GOD wants me to be in union with HIM at all times. This means reducing sin so HE can keep me safe from the Evil One. It also means knowing that I belong to GOD versus HE belonging to me. I am glad HE has given us understanding to live in union with the true GOD.

Challenge

  • What false gods is the writer speaking of?
  • Have you ever worshiped someone or something or a title or an action?
  • Will you place loving GOD over all your actions and stuff so you can live in union with the true GOD, who loves you deeply, today?

Off the Path

Off the Path

1 John 5: 16 If you see a believer commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray to God, who will give that person life. This applies to those whose sins do not lead to death. But there is sin which leads to death, and I do not say that you should pray to God about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which does not lead to death.

============

“Stay on the path” were the words of wisdom given to us from the forest ranger. It was easy at first, but there was a point where the path was not as obvious. We took a wrong turn and noticed the trees were getting thicker. We kept going and could see light. It was a small cliff that had a fall into a river.

  • Veering off the path was scary and I tried to use my instincts to get to safety.
  • The direction I was going could have led to death.
  • Every step I went in the wrong direction caused me to get closer and closer to danger.

John attempted to address one time sin versus a lifestyle of sin. He states “All wrongdoing is sin” to make sure that people were not trying to categorize types of sin to justify his or her actions. He attempted to get people off the path of a sinful lifestyle that could lead people away from GOD, especially if the relationship with HIM was not true in the first place.

My Observations:

  • JESUS died for all my sins, past, present and future.
  • Sin is very offensive to GOD and I should not take it lightly.
  • There is a way of thinking that is dangerous to my wellbeing that believes I can sin all I want and be forgiven, which will lead to my destruction.

“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death” is a scary quote to me. I mean, when the crowd says it’s right and my desires say it’s right, is everything I do or say right? No! There are some sinful desires, ways and words that are accepted by the world but are offensive to GOD. BUT HE always has a better way.

HE wants people to pray for each other, asking HIM to guide one another back to the path of life. HE knows we may innocently go down the wrong path by mistake. The problem comes when I stay on that path because I like it or my heart is too hard to turn back. I am glad GOD listens to prayers from others who may see my sin and want the best for me.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer recommend going to GOD versus confronting people?
  • Have you ever accidentally done or said something wrong?
  • If your heart has not been firmly planted in belief in JESUS, will you consider the path you are on may lead to death, so you can be placed back on GOD’s path of life today?

Knowing How to Ask

Knowing How to Ask

1 John 5: 13 I am writing this to you so that you may know that you have eternal life—you that believe in the Son of God. 14 We have courage in God's presence, because we are sure that he hears us if we ask him for anything that is according to his will. 15 He hears us whenever we ask him; and since we know this is true, we know also that he gives us what we ask from him.

============

“Can I go outside?” was my innocent question “No, it’s about to rain” was the decline. “Can I use the car?” “No, you don’t have your driver’s license yet.” “Can I have time off?” was the question I asked my boss later in life. “No, the company is in a state of emergency and we need everyone.” “Why does ‘everybody’ tell me NO!?

  • I was tired of hearing NO for an answer.
  • I was tired of not getting “my” way.
  • I was tired of having to ask for stuff!

John addressed those who had needs. He first provided comfort to those who believe in JESUS as the Savior, by telling them they have eternal life. But what about life on earth? He addressed that to by saying “HE hears us if we ask HIM for anything that is according to HIS will.”

My Observations:

  • GOD is sovereign and has the right to hear all of my requests and can say “Yes”, “No” or “Not Right Now.”
  • GOD wants to help me be part of HIS plan.
  • My requests work best when they align with GOD’s will.

Asking GOD for anything does not mean I will get everything. I mean, if I were to ask for something sinful, HE will say “No.” He will then guide me to grow up and ask HIM “What do YOU want?”

GOD gets excited when I try to align with HIS will. HE sees my efforts to do what pleases HIM, namely seeking the lost and serving my neighbors. HE cam to seek and to serve, so should I. I am glad GOD hears and answers my prayers with a “Yes” when I align to HIS good and perfect will.

Challenge:

  • Why does the writer mention courage?
  • Have you ever wanted something that you knew was not good for you?
  • Will you align your request to GOD’s will and seek what HE wants today?

Finding the Source

Finding the Source

1 John 5: 10 So those who believe in the Son of God have this testimony in their own heart; but those who do not believe God, have made a liar of him, because they have not believed what God has said about his Son. 11 The testimony is this: God has given us eternal life, and this life has its source in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has this life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

After returning from the hardware store for the third time, I was frustrated. I was trying to fix an electrical outlet, but my efforts were not working. I bought and returned two outlets, but neither of them were working. “Did you check to see if you are getting power to the outlet” the guy asked at the hardware store. While obvious, I just assumed it should have been connected. It wasn’t.

  • My assumptions were wrong and would not fix the problem.
  • My approach to the solution was wrong because it was based on a bad assumption.
  • I was never going to make the outlet work, because it was not connected to the power source.

John clarifies eternal life. He makes it as plain as possible. “Whoever has the SON, has life; whoever does not have the SON of GOD does not have life.”

My Observations:

  • Eternal life begins with this life.
  • GOD made all beings eternal, however, some will eternally be separated from HIM and those who believe in HIS SON will eternally be inside of HIM.
  • Eternal life is precious to GOD, so I must treat this life as special to HIM as well.

Scoffing at heaven or life after death or JESUS being the only way to have eternal life can be problematic. I mean, when I questioned the very existence of GOD, I was left without answered, only theories by, what humans called ‘smart people’, that could not be proven. BUT GOD had a clear way that made sense.

GOD, being made of pure love, not only created humans, HE became one and died for all sins so that those who believe in HIM may not perish, but have everlasting life. HIS actions were based on love for you and me. JESUS, who is GOD sis this out of love. The FATHER and the HOLY SPIRIT, painfully agreed so that you and I would not be lost. I gladly believe the JESUS loves me to this very day.

Challenge

  • What is the testimony the writer speaks about?
  • Have you ever wondered what happens to you and others when we die?
  • Will you believe in JESUS as your Savior from being eternally separated from GOD and feeling pain, to being eternally with GOD and having no pain, no problems and no tears forever?

Expectations Met

Expectations Met

1 John 5: Jesus Christ is the one who came with the water of his baptism and the blood of his death. He came not only with the water, but with both the water and the blood. And the Spirit himself testifies that this is true, because the Spirit is truth. There are three witnesses: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and all three give the same testimony. We believe human testimony; but God's testimony is much stronger, and he has given this testimony about his Son.

Sitting in driver’s school, I looked at my watch all day! It seemed like the hours moved as days as the instructor warned all of us speeders about the dangers of driving fast. I had to check in at the beginning of the class and then check out at the end.

  • I was sentenced to serve eight hours for my speeding.
  • I was required to take the driver’s class.
  • I needed an official witness that I took the class in order for the speeding ticket to not count against me.

John addressed something that people are still looking for to this very day, namely a person who can fix the mess humans are in. Poverty, sickness, violence and other problems seemed to grow, removing all hope. John addressed the fact the JESUS is the Messiah, the Savior of the world. Humans witnessed HIS baptism, but only HE experienced death and the SPIRIT testifies that HE met the criteria, GOD was looking for.

My Observations:

  • Satan’s pride caused him to get kicked out of heaven, and he introduced sin into the world by tricking Adam and Eve into performing an seemingly innocent sin.
  • All of humanity became sinners through Adam and Eve and needed a sinless Savior.
  • JESUS became a human, who never once sinned, who was baptized and murdered by HIS creation, but was raised from the dead by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Human witnesses are good, BUT GOD’s witness is the ultimate. I mean, humans can provide a witness to something and still be wrong or possibly have a sinful motive behind his or her witness. BUT GOD’s witness is pure and contains no sin.

The HOLY SPIRIT witnessed JESUS’s death and raised HIM from the dead. This act redeemed all humans who believe in the need of salvation. HIS resurrection was enough to meet GOD’s expectations. I am glad GOD supplied everything I needed to remove my sentence and to become redeemed by HIS SON.

Challenge

  • What does the writer point out about JESUS?
  • Have you ever pondered why did HE have to go through all of the pain and suffering?
  • Will you see GOD’s love in JESUS’s actions by surrendering your life to HIM and by knowing that all expectations of you have been met, simply by believing in what HE has done today?

Who can defeat the world?

Who can defeat the world?

1 John 5: Whoever believes that Jesus is the Messiah is a child of God; and whoever loves a father loves his child also. This is how we know that we love God's children: it is by loving God and obeying his commands. For our love for God means that we obey his commands. And his commands are not too hard for us, because every child of God is able to defeat the world. And we win the victory over the world by means of our faith. Who can defeat the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Winning the most coveted award in the company made me feel great! Conversely, being told “Your position has been eliminated” was devastating. I had wrapped my entire identity in work. When I had to face other parts of the world, I no longer had my title to lean on.

  • I felt beat up by the world.
  • I thought that the world was helpful, until it turned against me.
  • I felt that I lost my “purpose” that was given to me by the world.

John turned his attention to defining what true victory looks like. He first spoke about what true success looks like. He mentioned the grand prize of being a child of GOD. He then defines how GOD’s children should act, namely with love and obedience to GOD. He then defines the battle. Believers against the world.

My Observations:

  • The world has a lot to offer that could distract me from believing in GOD.
  • Fighting the world sometimes feels overwhelming.
  • GOD sent HIS SON to defeat the world, and HE did, so I need to place my trust in HIM so I can experience HIS victory!

Life has many ups and downs and the world thinks it has remedies. I mean, the solutions from the world usually appeal to my eyes, pride, and physical indulgences. BUT GOD wants more than that for me. JESUS was tempted by food, power and physical preservation.

HE experienced pain and suffering. HE knew about loneliness as well as persecution. HE did all of this to overcome the world so I would not have to. Any problem I face, HE knows and is empathetic. I am glad JESUS understands me and has defeated the world so I can have life through HIM.

Challenge

  • What answer does the writer give to the question “Who can defeat the world?”
  • Are all of your solutions to life’s problems from the internet?
  • Will you seek a relationship with JESUS, who defeated the powers of this world, so HE could save you and me to join in HIS plan to save all today?

Broken Repaired

Broken Repaired

1 John 4: 19 We love because God first loved us. 20 If we say we love God, but hate others, we are liars. For we cannot love God, whom we have not seen, if we do not love others, whom we have seen. 21 The command that Christ has given us is this: whoever loves God must love others also.

============

Sitting on the couch of my apartment, it hit me that my life was not going so well. With creditors calling, and my car totaled, I wanted to hear a friendly set of words but they were not available.

“Why don’t you go to church with us?” someone asked. I went and heard words of love I hadn’t heard in a while. I felt great. Years of success later, a guy would come by my desk to steal ideas. “I hate that guy” I said to myself.

  • I had forgotten what GOD did for me when I was broken.
  • In my lowest moments, I needed GOD and HE was faithful to me.
  • I was not faithful to GOD because I harbored hatred in my heart.

John addressed hatred. He knew the believers in CHRIST were persecuted by the very group that was supposed to be following GOD. He reminded everyone, that while we were still sinners CHRIST died for us. He then explained that you cannot love GOD and hate people.

My Observations:

  • GOD is love and expects me to act like HIM.
  • GOD loved me first and wants me to do the same.
  • GOD wants me to love those who are spiritually blind, selfish, and mean.

Without GOD, love cannot exist. I mean, GOD is the one who defined what love is and HE created us in HIS image to love one another. Unfortunately sin entered the world and is a part of us. Humans conjure up a new definition of love, that could include selfish desires that are not aligned to GOD’s.

JESUS gave us the example to follow. HE, being GOD, did not think being a servant to those who hated HIM was a problem. Even before HIS death, he healed a guards ear, who came to arrest HIM. JESUS commands something that is a choice. “love those who hate you.” I am glad GOD loved me first, so I choose to follow HIS example, HIS way.

Challenge

  • What lie does the writer point out?
  • Has GOD ever brought you out of something?
  • Will you consider examining your heart to see if you harbor any hatred towards someone and ask GOD to cleanse you of this and replace it with HIS love for others today?
