Learn and Be Encouraged

Learn and Be Encouraged

1 Corinthians 14: 29 Two or three who are given God's message should speak, while the others are to judge what they say. 30 But if someone sitting in the meeting receives a message from God, the one who is speaking should stop. 31 All of you may proclaim God's message, one by one, so that everyone will learn and be encouraged. 32 The gift of proclaiming God's message should be under the speaker's control, 33 because God does not want us to be in disorder but in harmony and peace.

============

My learning style requires a hands on approach. I have to do the thing I am learning, then the explanations make sense. I can watch someone, but there is nothing better than doing it. Sometimes I get nervous when I have to do something hard or unfamiliar. But wonderful people help stretch me into doing more.

  • Speaking about the love of GOD is for everyone.
  • Encouraging people helps me learn about GOD.
  • Proclaiming GOD’s message is not a solo activity.

Paul expresses the need for order in gatherings. He urges speakers to tell the truth, otherwise the group will judge what is said. But then he says something I am not familiar with. He suggests that “everyone” proclaim GOD’s message to personally learn and be encouraged.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to practice proclaiming HIS message.
  • GOD wants me to learn about HIM by experiencing explaining HIS love.
  • GOD wants me to be encouraged so HE allows me to speak about JESUS even though I am a sinner.

Explaining how JESUS loves me in spite of my sins encourages me and the person or people I am speaking to. I bet I could chart when I was discouraged and I would see that I was not speaking about JESUS’ love during those times.

Proclaiming GOD’s message is not only about HIM. HE is so full of love that all who speak about HIM or receive HIS Word, will be encouraged and grow in love. I am glad that I am adopted into the family and now I can learn and be encouraged about the love of JESUS.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the statement “all of you may proclaim GOD’s message?”
  • Do you feel it is someone else’s job to proclaim the message of GOD?
  • If you are nervous about speaking about JESUS, can you start small and speak to one person?
  • Will you accept the challenge of learning about JESUS and proclaiming HIS love as a way to become encouraged the rest of your life?

Balanced Structure

Balanced Structure

! Corinthians 14: 26 This is what I mean, my friends. When you meet for worship, one person has a hymn, another a teaching, another a revelation from God, another a message in strange tongues, and still another the explanation of what is said. Everything must be of help to the church. 27 If someone is going to speak in strange tongues, two or three at the most should speak, one after the other, and someone else must explain what is being said. 28 But if no one is there who can explain, then the one who speaks in strange tongues must be quiet and speak only to himself and to God.

============

Nervous, I answered the interviewers’ question with a very long statement. As I remembered something, I would say “Oh, I forgot to mention…” in my disjointed rambling. Needless to say, I did not get that job. I asked someone for advice and got organized. The next time, however, I was so focused on my new structure that I was thrown off when the interview did not go as planned.

  • I was unorganized and confused the person I was supposed to be explaining things to.
  • I was then too organized and not ready for meeting a different need.
  • I wanted to find a balance in my organization for something spontaneous.

Paul provides a suggestion rather than a command. He tried to get people to understand the real purpose of meeting together is to help people understand who JESUS is through song, teaching, testimonies and spontaneous speaking that would require interpretation. He wants everyone to think about the recipient versus those who are delivering.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to be organized because people need structure.
  • GOD wants me to be flexible because HE cannot be contained to a certain hour or duration.
  • GOD wants me to be ready for HIM to reveal HIMSELF at any moment but have control over wanting the spotlight.

Order in church is important, especially to someone who has never attended a church service. But has order replaced reaching people? I mean, sometimes when church meets “my” expectation as a believer, I look around and do not see the fruit of hearing from a new person who freshly gave their life to CHRIST.

While order is important, purpose is more important. GOD doesn’t seem to be this repetitive lifeless being, rather one who is alive and working things out in a variety of lives. Out gatherings probably will not change overnight, but I can provide a balance of structure and spontaneity to my life to bring people to CHRIST.

Challenge

  • Have you had the urge to bring in new people to your gathering?
  • When is the last time you reviewed your order or your service?
  • Are you driven by meeting the expectations of those who are regular church goers?
  • Will you consider a balance that provides structure and spontaneity in your own life with the purpose of easing the concerns of someone who has not yet accepted JESUS as their Savior?

Convinced, Judged and Opened

Convinced, Judged and Opened

1 Corinthians 14: 20 Do not be like children in your thinking, my friends; be children so far as evil is concerned, but be grown up in your thinking. 21 In the Scriptures it is written,

“By means of people speaking strange languages
    I will speak to my people, says the Lord.
I will speak through lips of foreigners,
    but even then my people will not listen to me.”

22 So then, the gift of speaking in strange tongues is proof for unbelievers, not for believers, while the gift of proclaiming God's message is proof for believers, not for unbelievers.

23 If, then, the whole church meets together and everyone starts speaking in strange tongues—and if some ordinary people or unbelievers come in, won't they say that you are all crazy? 24 But if everyone is proclaiming God's message when some unbelievers or ordinary people come in, they will be convinced of their sin by what they hear. They will be judged by all they hear, 25 their secret thoughts will be brought into the open, and they will bow down and worship God, confessing, “Truly God is here among you!”

============

Walking into a church, I noticed everyone was dressed nicely, the place was neat and clean and everyone had a smile on their face. It felt weird, almost like a group of aliens from another planet had taken over. They spoke to each other in Bible verses that I was unfamiliar with and made me stand up and introduce myself, as if I wasn’t already uncomfortable enough.

  • I felt like I was on the outside of the group.
  • I felt like I was not “clean” enough for this group.
  • I felt like I was more of a burden than a willing participant so I left and never came back.

Paul concludes addressing the use of speaking in tongues. He mentions this gift is valuable, but can be disruptive to those who are not believers. He tries to explain the purpose of saying anything needs to be for GOD.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to share my testimony which includes my sins.
  • GOD wants me to be free to share how I am forgiven for all my sins.
  • GOD wants me to want others to be free to see JESUS as the solution, versus HIM being the problem.

Making JESUS the problem is usually not done on purpose. I mean, well-meaning people, who may have gone through a lot, try to explain that JESUS is the answer to every problem, and HE is. But sometimes this group can forget they are “still” sinners who need guidance by the HOLY SPIRIT daily.

GOD wants me to see people different. It is not “us” who are believers versus “them” who are unbelievers. It is “us” who are all sinners. No one sin is greater than another and anyone who confesses their sins and believes that JESUS is the one and only forgiver, will be saved eternally. I am convinced I am a sinner, judged by my wrongs and open to saying JESUS forgave me for my past, current and future sins.

Challenge

  • How do you think salvation should be spoken to someone you know who may not believe in JESUS?
  • If you attend church regularly, what do you notice about testimonies?
  • Will you take baby steps in telling people about your deepest sins so they will be willing to turn their life to JESUS today?

Ordinary People

Ordinary People

1 Corinthians 14: 13 The person who speaks in strange tongues, then, must pray for the gift to explain what is said. 14 For if I pray in this way, my spirit prays indeed, but my mind has no part in it. 15 What should I do, then? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray also with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will sing also with my mind. 16 When you give thanks to God in spirit only, how can ordinary people taking part in the meeting say “Amen” to your prayer of thanksgiving? They have no way of knowing what you are saying. 17 Even if your prayer of thanks to God is quite good, other people are not helped at all.

18 I thank God that I speak in strange tongues much more than any of you. 19 But in church worship I would rather speak five words that can be understood, in order to teach others, than speak thousands of words in strange tongues.

============

“Say it in English!” were the words of frustration in response to my statement. I thought I had communicated well, but I spoke using the terminology I was comfortable with. I then realized I was using “tech talk” because that was what I was used to.

  • Sometimes I may be saying one thing but not explaining myself well.
  • Sometimes I may use the words I am comfortable with, but they do not convey what I mean.
  • Sometimes I may speak before I understand how this message can be understood.

Paul explains that he can speak in many strange tongues, but what good is it if no one understands what is said? He implores people to seek clear communication that is easily understood.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to speak to people with the purpose of everyone being able to praise HIM.
  • GOD wants me to value praying with other people when seeking to thank HIM.
  • GOD wants me to desire my words to be translated if I am speaking in a way that cannot be understood.

Communication is not easy. I mean, I can say one thing and to another person it can mean something else. If I am speaking in a way that cannot be understood, then other people cannot be included. It seems like GOD wants inclusion.

HE may give me a gift of being able to speak in another language, but HE wants more people than me to praise HIM. Prayers, singing and thanksgiving are to be shared with one another so GOD will be pleased with all participants. I am glad HE wants me to be part of a group of ordinary people who can worship HIM together.

Challenge

  • How are prayer, singing and thanksgiving to be shared with other people?
  • What benefits do you see in clearly communicating with other people?
  • Will you seek ways to teach or communicate to others clearly today?

Getting Stronger

1 Corinthians 14: Take such lifeless musical instruments as the flute or the harp—how will anyone know the tune that is being played unless the notes are sounded distinctly? And if the one who plays the bugle does not sound a clear call, who will prepare for battle? In the same way, how will anyone understand what you are talking about if your message given in strange tongues is not clear? Your words will vanish in the air! 10 There are many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 But if I do not know the language being spoken, those who use it will be foreigners to me and I will be a foreigner to them. 12 Since you are eager to have the gifts of the Spirit, you must try above everything else to make greater use of those which help to build up the church.

============

“Come help us” was the request. “But I don’t know how” was my response. “We’ll show you” was the response that made me feel comfortable enough to say “Yes I will help.” I was now part of the group.

  • I wondered if I would add value.
  • I wondered if I could handle the burden.
  • I wondered if I should just back off and not help.

Paul continues his explanation of spiritual gifts. One gift in question was that of speaking in tongues. An earlier explanation states that tongue speech that no one understands only edifies the person speaking. But if the words are interpreted, many people will be blessed. He then implores that people be part of something bigger, namely building up the church.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to be part of helping build HIS church.
  • GOD wants me to use my gifts to build as often as I can.
  • GOD wants me to seek gifts that help be part of HIS solution.

Seeking to build GOD’s church is a privilege that is sometimes foreign. I mean, what good is building the church when I have problems of my own. GOD does something strange when I focus my attention on HIM.

In the middle of pain and weakness, GOD uses broken people to build one another up. HE loves when we come together to bring people to back to HIM. He provides me with a group that honors HIM and in turn, I become stronger even though my circumstance may remain. I gladly make myself available to seek any talent to help build GOD’s kingdom.

Challenge

  • How do you feel when someone speaks to you in a language you do not understand?
  • How do you think other people feel when you speak in a way they cannot understand?
  • Will you seek gifts that help build the church, helping people understand the love of CHRIST today?

Usefulness Adjustment

Usefulness Adjustment

1 Corinthians 14: I would like for all of you to speak in strange tongues; but I would rather that you had the gift of proclaiming God's message. For the person who proclaims God's message is of greater value than the one who speaks in strange tongues—unless there is someone present who can explain what is said, so that the whole church may be helped. So when I come to you, my friends, what use will I be to you if I speak in strange tongues? Not a bit, unless I bring you some revelation from God or some knowledge or some inspired message or some teaching.

============

After being assigned to a group, I quickly felt inadequate. It seemed that each person was smarter than me and knew what they were doing. Meanwhile, I didn’t know what I was doing so I sat quietly waiting for the time to pass by. I dreaded the next time we would get together again.

  • There have been times when I felt useless.
  • There have been times when I felt I was not talented.
  • There have been times when I felt like I was on the outside of usefulness.

Paul implores the people to focus the use of their GOD given gifts to proclaim GOD’s message. In his example, he mentions the gift of speaking in strange tongues. He compared this gift to proclaiming GOD’s message and said one had “greater” value than another. But Paul used the word “unless” to bring equilibrium to both talents.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to know HE gave me a gift that is special.
  • GOD wants me to use my gift to “Proclaim HIS message.”
  • GOD wants me to value the gifts other people have so they too can “Proclaim GOD’s message.”

Moving the spotlight on “me” is the problem. I mean when I can’t do something well or I feel inadequate, I want to shrink away and be silent. BUT GOD doesn’t want me to feel inadequate. HE wants me and everyone HE made to feel useful.

This requires me to move the spotlight on HIM. When I focus everyone’s attention on CHRIST, everything else falls in place. My gift then becomes useful.

Challenge

  • What do you observe about the comparison of the two gifts mentioned?
  • What do you notice about Paul’s preference versus the opening desire?
  • How does this apply to your GOD given gift?
  • Will you seek to proclaim GOD’s message more and more and know your gift is useful to HIM?

Heartfelt Love Help

Heartfelt Love Help

1 Corinthians 14: It is love, then, that you should strive for. Set your hearts on spiritual gifts, especially the gift of proclaiming God's message. Those who speak in strange tongues do not speak to others but to God, because no one understands them. They are speaking secret truths by the power of the Spirit. But those who proclaim God's message speak to people and give them help, encouragement, and comfort. Those who speak in strange tongues help only themselves, but those who proclaim God's message help the whole church.

============

Feeling rotten, I must have had a disgusted look on my face because people kept asking me “Is everything alright?” Usually I was the one asking that question but this particular day was the exception. Finally, someone approached me and said “It will be alright. GOD is with you.” I guess I just needed to hear that at the time.

  • Many people have given me encouragement when I was down.
  • Many people have provided comfort for me when I was feeling low.
  • Many people have used their gifts to help me in time of need.

Paul mentions a special act of love we are all supposed to share in. He attempts to convince everyone to use their GOD given spiritual gifts as often as possible. One gift to acquire is proclaiming GOD’s message.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to recognize that my gifts and talents come from HIM.
  • GOD wants me to set my heart on helping others.
  • GOD wants me to encourage, comfort and help others in their time of need.

We all need help, comfort and encouragement at some point. No one is above pain. BUT GOD put people around me to ease the pain and encourage me to keep going. HE knows life would be a challenge so HE not only provided the HOLY SPIRIT to me for comfort, HE provided HIM to those who believe in JESUS.

HE has given many people comfort and they in turn provide that comfort to others. I am grateful people have used their gifts to share GOD’s encouragement and comfort to me and others.

Challenge

  • Have you looked at your gifts and talents lately?
  • What do you feel when you hear the words “help” and “encouragement” and “comfort?”
  • Will you use your GOD given gifts to provide help, encouragement and comfort to someone today?

Up Close and Personal Love

Up Close and Personal Love

1 Corinthians 13: 11 When I was a child, my speech, feelings, and thinking were all those of a child; now that I am an adult, I have no more use for childish ways. 12 What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror; then we shall see face-to-face. What I know now is only partial; then it will be complete—as complete as God's knowledge of me.

13 Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love.

============

Driving became very difficult because salt was all over my windshield and the car was out of washer fluid. I had to slow down because the road was partially covered with snow and I could not see very well. I used my best understanding of that road to navigate, but I  really did not know if I was in one lane or another.

  • My understanding of life is blurry.
  • My knowledge of life is only partial.
  • My wisdom used in life is like a dim image in a mirror.

Paul concludes his explanation of true love. Many people think this love is something that humans can do and do well. Paul explains that we will not really know what we are doing until we see JESUS face-to-face. But what am I supposed to do until then?

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to place my faith in HIS promises that HE will always be with me.
  • GOD wants me to place my hope in JESUS, who I will one day see fact-to-face.
  • GOD wants me to grow up and understand that true love has already been shown to me through JESUS.

Imagine a house on fire in the middle of a hurricane and a child asking “Why can’t I watch cartoons right now?” I mean, this child is not even on the road, let alone able to drive. Now think of what the adult should do. Focus on getting everyone to safety with the best knowledge he or she has.

GOD has given each of us a second chance. When we were in the middle of our sins, we were doomed to die an eternal death. BUT JESUS took care of that. HE saved me and anyone who will believe in HIM. HE then sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live in me. This act of love only gives me partial abilities. I need other people to complete the mirror. I place my faith and hope in JESUS.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about faith and hope being mentioned?
  • What does it mean to speak and act as a child or an adult in terms of CHRIST?
  • Will you stop seeking what you want as a child and seek what GOD wants you to do with your gifts HE has given you today?

Perfect Love

Perfect Love

1 Corinthians 13: Love is eternal. There are inspired messages, but they are temporary; there are gifts of speaking in strange tongues, but they will cease; there is knowledge, but it will pass. For our gifts of knowledge and of inspired messages are only partial; 10 but when what is perfect comes, then what is partial will disappear.

============

“You can do it” were the words of inspiration I told someone. When the person accomplished what was set out to do, I wondered if my words had any part in the success. I wonder this because I could not do what the person was attempting.

  • My inspiration is a partial solution to someone’s circumstance.
  • My speech is a partial solution to someone’s situation.
  • My sharing of knowledge to help someone is flawed because I only have partial knowledge.

Paul says “Love is eternal.” This love he speaks about is JESUS. When HE returns, then there will be no need for humans to use their gifts to point to perfection.

My Observation

  • JESUS is love and HE gives HIS perfect love to me.
  • JESUS died for me and was raised from the dead to wipe away my sins.
  • JESUS sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me because sin is part of me.

Being born into sin is difficult. I mean, my thoughts are usually not on GOD, rather they are on myself. But every once in a while, I am prompted to use a gift GOD gave me to point people to JESUS. This is temporary. I fall into sin, repent, and seek to be better day by day.

JESUS knows I have this issue. HE knows that sin will be present in me until HE returns and I am with HIM eternally. Until then, HE wants me to know humans are not perfect, but HIS love is perfection. I am grateful for HIS love for anyone who can give their heart to HIM.

Challenge

  • What messages or actions inspire you from a person who is not alive?
  • Have you ever been inspired for a short period of time and discouraged during another?
  • Will you ease up on your pursuit of temporary solutions and seek the perfect, eternal solution which is JESUS, who will guide you into all truth today?

Love is Exciting

Love is Exciting

1 Corinthians 13: Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud; love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs; love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail.

============

After reading this list, I realized that I had not shown love to my family and friends. It made me feel bad. But replacing “love” with “JESUS” the list becomes less of a burden on me and more excitement in my relationship with HIM.

  • Expecting humans to show this type of love will bring on disappointment.
  • Expecting humans to show unconditional love is false.
  • Expecting humans to show pure love that has no sin in it, is impossible.

“All have sinned and fall short of GOD’s glory.” Paul said this and knows humans cannot produce the type of love needed to save humanity. BUT JESUS did. Paul writes about they type of love JESUS showed us. JESUS executed love flawlessly.

My Observations

  • When GOD says to me “I love you”, HE means it.
  • When GOD says to me “I will always be with you”, I can believe this to be true.
  • When GOD says to me “I stand at the door and knock, if anyone opens the door I will come in and sup with you”, I can open my heart to HIM and know HE will fill it up with HIS love.

GOD never lies and is the only one who can show true love. But where does that leave humans? It leaves us with a hole in our hearts that can only be filled with GOD’s love. If I try to fill this hole with work or prestige or materials possessions or worldly lusts, the hole in my heart drains the actions onto the ground.

When I allow GOD to fill my heart, the HOLY SPIRIT guides me to an abundant life that the world may not understand. I am excited about the pure love JESUS has shown me and all who believe in HIM.

Challenge

  • What do you observe when you compare this list to what JESUS did for you?
  • How do you feel about this list when you look at other humans?
  • How do you feel about this list when you look at JESUS?
  • Will you rethink the source of love and allow GOD to place this source in your heart today?

Untwisted Love

Untwisted Love

1 Corinthians 13: I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell. I may have the gift of inspired preaching; I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets; I may have all the faith needed to move mountains—but if I have no love, I am nothing. I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned—but if I have no love, this does me no good.

============

Reviewing another human’s actions and comparing them to this list, I can only come to the conclusion that all humans hate each other. Not one can do what is said in this list. But rereading the list, replacing the word “love” with “JESUS” and now, the list makes sense.

  • My “love” will be misinterpreted.
  • Someone else’s “love” can be misunderstood.
  • Our “love” can be selfish, filled with sin, and, in reality, twisted and false.

Paul wrote an entire letter, trying to get this church to focus on spreading the good news about JESUS. Unfortunately, the selfish look at this list as a “what about me?” list.  Paul was trying to unify “the body” and provided the only solution. Rereading the list shows the need for JESUS and it stops there.

My Observation

  • I may be able to do many things, but if I have no JESUS, the things I do are worthless.
  • I may be able to acquire large sums of money but if I have no JESUS, the material possessions will hold me.
  • I may be able to give up everything and be homeless, serving worthy causes, but if I have no JESUS, all my actions will be in vain.

JESUS is pure love because HE is GOD. Measuring someone else’s “love” would be problematic because there would always be a smidge of sin in it. Love cannot contain a smidge of sin, hurt or hate, so JESUS had to provide pure love to the world.

My “love” is tainted, but GOD has given me pure love that is not. I am glad I can point people to this pure love so anyone who accepts HIM will feel true love.

Challenge

  • When you replace the word “love” in the passage above, what do you notice?
  • What do you observe about the list of comparison items such as languages, preaching, understanding scripture, faith and sacrifice?
  • Who did the Pharisees overlook and what actions did they pride themselves on?
  • Will you rethink love and focus on JESUS versus the tainted love humans give?

Admiration

Admiration

1 Corinthians 12: 27 All of you are Christ's body, and each one is a part of it. 28 In the church God has put all in place: in the first place apostles, in the second place prophets, and in the third place teachers; then those who perform miracles, followed by those who are given the power to heal or to help others or to direct them or to speak in strange tongues. 29 They are not all apostles or prophets or teachers. Not everyone has the power to work miracles 30 or to heal diseases or to speak in strange tongues or to explain what is said. 31 Set your hearts, then, on the more important gifts.

Best of all, however, is the following way.

============

Trying my hand at art, I drew some things, but I quickly realized I was not as good as the gifted. I would read books on how to draw more realistic, but the innate talent just was not there. I decided to admire those who had greater ability than me rather than pursuing their gift.

  • I began to value others for what they could do.
  • I started understanding I need others who can do many things better than myself.
  • I saw more value in what people brought to the table when I accepted my deficit.

Paul goes into a history lesson that could be mistaken as a hierarchy. He had just mentioned that everyone is equal, Jew and Gentile. He then explains that CHRIST put the apostles in place to spread the Good News. He then explains that other people, with various gifts, followed. While these gifts were nice to have, everyone should pursue the greatest gift, namely love.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to value other people who gave their life to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to see that I need other people to complete HIS church.
  • GOD wants me to recognize other people’s talents to serve HIM in HIS church.

Admiring what people do for GOD is highly acceptable. I mean seeing someone serve or heal or speak a certain way is a good thing to do. If I envy someone versus admiring them, then I have a problem. GOD has given each person a special gift that is to be used to bring people to HIM.

HE wants me to use this gift as often as I can. I can admire what others do, but all of us are supposed to learn how to love each other the way GOD intended. I am glad there are many other people, who I can learn from, who have the talent to bring people to the saving knowledge of JESUS.

Challenge

  • What qualities do you admire?
  • How does envy get in the way of admiration?
  • Do you feel you are valued for the gifts you are using for the growth of GOD’s kingdom?
  • Will you seek to add love as one of your learned gifts today?

Detached

Detached

1 Corinthians 12: 21 So then, the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don't need you!” Nor can the head say to the feet, “Well, I don't need you!” 22 On the contrary, we cannot do without the parts of the body that seem to be weaker; 23 and those parts that we think aren't worth very much are the ones which we treat with greater care; while the parts of the body which don't look very nice are treated with special modesty, 24 which the more beautiful parts do not need. God himself has put the body together in such a way as to give greater honor to those parts that need it. 25 And so there is no division in the body, but all its different parts have the same concern for one another. 26 If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it; if one part is praised, all the other parts share its happiness.

============

Walking into church, someone greeted me by name. I had no clue what his name was so I politely greeted him and kept going. This surface conversation was replicated with several people until service was over. I went home with no one knowing me or the circumstances I was going through.

  • It was easy to be detached from other people’s problems.
  • It was easy to smile in a group when everything was going wrong inside.
  • It was easy to put up a front in church because others were doing the same.

Paul continues explaining the “body” of CHRIST. He flips from those who felt lesser than others to those who feel superior to people. “I don’t need you” is the mistake Paul is trying to correct. This brazen line of thinking is fostered by pride  and societal structures that naturally form hierarchies.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to break down hierarchies.
  • GOD wants me to value what everyone brings to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to know that when one person suffers, it is my obligation to suffer “with” him or her.

Detaching from people is easy and sometimes necessary. Carrying too many burdens can cause one to fall into despair. On the other hand, being detached puts up a façade that everything is alright, meanwhile life keeps getting messier and messier. GOD wants the “body” HE made to be there for one another.

No one is greater than another person. Only GOD is greater than all. We are made to share our hurts, pains, sins and point people to JESUS for salvation. Looking good in front of people is not the answer. Sharing JESUS as the healer, is the only way to truth. I am grateful for and need the body of CHRIST.

Challenge

  • Do you feel it is easier to do things by yourself?
  • What do you notice about the term “I don’t need you” in this explanation?
  • What are your thoughts on “division?
  • ”Will you seek help or seek to be helpful to someone today?

Fine Just As You Are

1 Corinthians 12: 14 For the body itself is not made up of only one part, but of many parts. 15 If the foot were to say, “Because I am not a hand, I don't belong to the body,” that would not keep it from being a part of the body. 16 And if the ear were to say, “Because I am not an eye, I don't belong to the body,” that would not keep it from being a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were just an eye, how could it hear? And if it were only an ear, how could it smell? 18 As it is, however, God put every different part in the body just as he wanted it to be. 19 There would not be a body if it were all only one part! 20 As it is, there are many parts but one body.

============

After being talked about by many people, I wondered if I was broken beyond repair. Too skinny, too poor, too messy, too out of fashion were the many insults hurled at me. The world had placed negative labels on me that I wondered if they were true.

  • I started to doubt my value.
  • I wondered if I could amount to anything.
  • I sometimes felt useless.

Paul explains that looking at someone else’s gifts and talents may cause a person to doubt the value of their own. He used an analogy of feet, ears and eyes to illustrate how necessary each person is to the body of CHRIST.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to value other people’s gifts and talents.
  • GOD wants me to also value my gifts and talents.
  • GOD wants me to understand that no one is inferior or superior.

Feeling “less than” is a serious problem. I mean, making someone feel less than their gifts and talents GOD has given them is a serious offense. But also, envying someone because of their gifts and talents can cause problems as well. What is the remedy? Be thankful.

When I am thankful for my gifts as well as other people’s gifts, I can broaden my world to more than me. My life becomes abundant when I praise GOD for others and for how HE made me. I am glad HE says “I saved you in the middle of your sins.” This shows me HE loves me just as I am.

Challenge

  • What does this passage say about the “body?”
  • What value do you place on your gifts and talents? How about other people’s gift?
  • Will you seek to value how GOD made you and how HE made other people different for HIS purpose?

Broken Mirror

 Broken Mirror

1 Corinthians 12 12 Christ is like a single body, which has many parts; it is still one body, even though it is made up of different parts. 13 In the same way, all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether slaves or free, have been baptized into the one body by the same Spirit, and we have all been given the one Spirit to drink.

============

When I was moving, I threw a hand mirror in a box with books and other hard items. While unpacking I noticed it was cracked. I could still use the mirror, but it just wasn’t the same.

  • I am part of larger group.
  • I am a broken piece of a whole mirror.
  • I am part of the entire body of CHRIST, but I need other broken pieces.

“Let us make man in OUR image” was the creation of the mirror. But when Adam sinned, the entire mirror was broken. It could no longer reflect GOD as a whole. Each piece could reflect a tiny portion, but not the whole being.

My Observation

  • GOD wants me to know I am part of CHRIST, but only a part.
  • GOD wants me to understand that I need other pieces of the mirror to reflect HIM properly.
  • GOD wants me to seek the other broken pieces to put the mirror back together.

Knowing one part of the mirror is not more important than another part is the beginning. I mean, when I move a piece of the mirror to the eye or the ear, it reflects what is shown. BUT GOD wants an entire reflection. HE wants all the pieces put back together.

But what happens when they are all together? Wouldn’t there still be a crack? Yes. But somehow the HOLY SPIRIT removes the crack when we are “baptized into the one body” by HIM. HE guides us to see we all need each other to truly reflect GOD. I am glad I need other pieces.

Challenge

  • What are your observations about the differences spoken here?
  • What do you notice about the HOLY SPIRIT?
  • Do you feel you are a part of something much bigger?
  • Will you seek CHRIST and be added into the body today?

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

1 Corinthians 12: The Spirit gives one person a message full of wisdom, while to another person the same Spirit gives a message full of knowledge. One and the same Spirit gives faith to one person, while to another person he gives the power to heal. 10 The Spirit gives one person the power to work miracles; to another, the gift of speaking God's message; and to yet another, the ability to tell the difference between gifts that come from the Spirit and those that do not. To one person he gives the ability to speak in strange tongues, and to another he gives the ability to explain what is said. 11 But it is one and the same Spirit who does all this; as he wishes, he gives a different gift to each person.

============

Sitting in the room, I watched everyone else get responsibilities handed to them. I waited my turn and noticed the person handing out the responsibilities had stopped and I did not get one. “What’s wrong with me?” I thought to myself.

  • I wanted to be part of the group.
  • I wanted to fit in.
  • I wanted to participate and contribute my portion.

Paul continues to explain spiritual gifts. He states that the HOLY SPIRIT gives each person a “different gift” as HE wishes. This gift is special and unique and to be used to glorify GOD in some way.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to praise HIM in my own unique way.
  • GOD wants me to share HIS love in my own unique way.
  • GOD wants me to serve HIS people in my own unique way.

Being jealous of what other people can do is not pretty. I mean, when I see what someone else can do and I feel less than that person, I may be overlooking my own special gift GOD has excitedly given me. HE carefully gave me a gift that no one else has. HE has done the same for each and every person. I cannot downplay someone else’s gift because it is special to GOD.

Getting back to the story above where everyone else got responsibilities and I didn’t. The person came back to me later and apologized for overlooking me. “I had too much on my mind” was the apology and I was given more responsibility than I had imagined.  I am glad the HOLY SPIRIT sees everyone and gives me gifts that make our relationship special.

Challenge

  • Do you think the list of spiritual gifs listed here is complete?
  • What do you think your spiritual gifts are?
  • What do you notice about gifts that “do not” come from the HOLY SPIRIT?
  • How will you use your GOD given spiritual gift today?

Ready, Willing and Able

Ready, Willing and Able

1 Corinthians 12: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, but the same Lord is served. There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service. The Spirit's presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.

============

Learning how to drive seemed like something that took a long time, even though the class was only a semester. I was willing to drive people anywhere they wanted to go, but I did not know the rules of the road, nor did I own a car. I also was not old enough. “When will I ever be able to drive?!” I wondered impatiently.

  • I really wanted something I was not ready for.
  • I was willing but not able.
  • I felt I had the potential, but I needed to wait to use it.

Paul begins to explain spiritual gifts. The beginning of the lesson shows where the gifts come from, namely the HOLY SPIRIT. Each person is given their own gift which makes him or her ready to serve the LORD. But he says something strange. He says “GOD gives ability to all for their particular service.” Timing is everything.

My Observations

  • GOD gave me a special gift, by the HOLY SPIRIT, that no one else has.
  • GOD wants me to be willing to use my special gift to serve the LORD by serving HIS people.
  • GOD wants me to be patient when HE says wait, for it is HE who provides the opportunities.

Being willing to serve the LORD is a wonderful, yet confusing thing. I mean, sometimes our desire to serve the LORD may be sincere, but how we think we should serve HIM may not align with HIS timing or audience. I may be willing right now, but HE has a particular person in mind who is not ready to hear a message from me.

HE also has my needs in HIS plan. I may not be ready to serve but HE will provide me with the right gift and audience at HIS time. This requires patience. I gladly wait on HIS audience, in HIS timing to serve HIS people the way HE wants me to serve them.

Challenge

  • Are you willing to serve the LORD?
  • What do you notice about where the spiritual gifts come from?
  • What do you notice about the word ‘different’ spoken here?
  • Will you seek to use your gifts and talents “for the good of all” today?
