Symbolic Cleansing

Symbolic Cleansing

Exodus 19: 10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”

14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”

============

GOD told Moses to tell the people to wash their clothes and get ready for HIM to come down on the third day.

My Observations:

  • GOD seemed to be symbolically preparing the people to represent the cleansing of sin by having them wash their clothes.
  • GOD seemed to be announcing that JESUS would come down from the cross in three days in this parallel number of days.
  • GOD warned the people that they should not take HIS presence lightly otherwise they would be put to death.

Clean clothes represent spiritual purification, forgiveness and redemption through JESUS CHRIST. In the book of Revelation, we see the people who have cleaned their clothe4s in the blood of the LAMB. The three-day delay from the time Moses had the conversation with GOD until the time HE would arrive, parallels the time JESUS was crucified and when HE arose from the dead.

GOD does not seem to be addressing a mindset in this passage; rather, HE was demonstrating what JESUS would do. No one was allowed to touch the mountain when GOD was on it. While GOD is everywhere, there are specific places where HE declares boundaries for a specified time.

GOD declared this symbolic act as holy and reverence of HIM was HIS expectation. HE even told them not to procreate during this holy time, possibly because JESUS was to be the new life. This was all about GOD and HIS plan to redeem mankind.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about the washing of the clothes?
  • What symbolic gestures can you do to signify what GOD has done for you?
  • Have you forgotten who GOD is and what HE has done by limiting beliefs?

Repaired and Restored

Repaired and Restored

1 John 3: Let no one deceive you, my children! Whoever does what is right is righteous, just as Christ is righteous. Whoever continues to sin belongs to the Devil, because the Devil has sinned from the very beginning. The Son of God appeared for this very reason, to destroy what the Devil had done.

============

Walking up to my car, I noticed I could see in one window better than others. As I walked a little closer, I reasoned that I must have left the window down. But when I reached the car, I found my window had been broken out and my tapes were stolen. Yes, I said tapes.

  • I wondered why did this happen to “me?”
  • I felt a sense of loss that I could not reconcile, so I became angry.
  • I had spent years collecting the right music for my moods and now they were all gone!

John makes an implied appeal to stay firm in doing what is right according to the LORD. He gave a strong reason, namely the Devil came to steal GOD’s people away from HIM. John explains that JESUS appeared specifically to repair what Satan broke and restore humanity.

My Observations:

  • At times, the difficulties in life cause me to lose my hope, BUT GOD knows what I go through and always provides a way.
  • Troubles in life are placed in front of me and I have to make a choice to continue to serve GOD or fall to my own sins.
  • JESUS knew I would choose sin, BUT HE died for me anyway and gave me a way to live forever, in spite of my sins.

Being repaired and restored is exciting! I mean, when something that is damaged or stolen is repaired or returned, it is exciting to be the benefactor. Unfortunately, we have an adversary who will not give up as easily. He will keep trying to make you and me lose hope in CHRIST. But there is hope.

JESUS sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me so I would not lose hope. HE opens my eyes to see beyond the trouble of the day, so I can keep doing “what is right” for GOD. CHRIST did not die so mankind would be weak, sick and hurt, rather HE was raised from the dead to repair and restore you and me. I am grateful for HIS love!

Challenge

  • What deception could the writer be talking about?
  • Have you ever been tempted to lose hope in JESUS and follow the recommendations of the world?
  • Will you keep doing “what is right” as GOD has laid out HIS plan to you so you will remain in union with HIM today and forever?

Available Power

Available Power

James 5: 16 So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect. 17 Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years. 18 Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops.

============

Thinking I was by myself, I came up with plans to address my problems. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I couldn’t even breathe deeply. I called a coworker over to my apartment. He asked questions that showed he was nervous about the situation too. I began to pray because I did not know what to do. Suddenly I felt better. I went to the doctor and they could not find out what was wrong.

  • I was scared.
  • I was in pain.
  • I did not know how to “fix” this.

James says some difficult words to hear. “Confess your sins to one another.” He implies that some, not all, ailments could be manifested by sin. He provides a remedy, namely prayer.

My Observations:

  • Confession of my sins relieves me of guilt that could cause me to lose sleep.
  • Turning away from my sins enables me to rest better because my conscience is clear.
  • Asking GOD to intervene when someone tells me about his or her sins, is more powerful than gossip.

Praying seems weak but is extremely powerful. I mean, when I humble myself before GOD, HE is willing to listen. HE knows when I am too proud or too hateful to place things before HIM correctly. HE also knows when I am forcing HIS hand to get “my” way. BUT GOD is merciful.

HE brings to mind the things I need to confess and gives me an opportunity to say, “I need help with this.” HE is willing to help me when I ask for help. HE is delighted when I tell others I need help in an area of my life. HE then surrounds me with the right people to guide me back to HIM. I am glad HE is willing to heal me and put me back on the right path.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention confession when he later talks about being healed?
  • Do you believe in the power of prayer?
  • Why don’t you get your way all the time?
  • Wil you tap into the power of prayer by confessing and talking to GOD on someone else’s behalf today?

Dirty Hands, Dirty Feet

Dirty Hands, Dirty Feet

Hebrews 10: 19 We have, then, my friends, complete freedom to go into the Most Holy Place by means of the death of Jesus. 20 He opened for us a new way, a living way, through the curtain—that is, through his own body. 21 We have a great priest in charge of the house of God. 22 So let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, with hearts that have been purified from a guilty conscience and with bodies washed with clean water. 23 Let us hold on firmly to the hope we profess, because we can trust God to keep his promise. 24 Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. 25 Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.

============

After playing outside, a neighbor invited us into their house. It was a strange invitation, because we really had never been inside this particular home. “Take off your shoes” was the first statement. “Sit on the plastic covered furniture” was the next statement. The walls were white and so wase the carpet.

  • I felt like I was dirty.
  • I felt uneasy being around something clean while I was dirty.
  • I felt I could not touch anything or do anything because I would make the clean stuff dirty.

Paul, the assumed writer, tells everyone that, through JESUS, there is “complete freedom to go into the Most Holy Place.” This is the sanctuary of GOD and no sin is allowed. He implies that we have freedom to walk around because JESUS made us clean.

My Observations:

  • GOD is holy enough to clean me up to be in HIS presence.
  • JESUS died for my sins so I could become holy enough to into into the Most Holy Place.
  • Since I am in the Most Holy Place, GOD wants me to use it well.

Bam, “you are clean, now what?”” is the tone of the message. I mean, as dirty as I have been, JESUS cleaned me up. I don’t even know the areas I am dirty. HE sees my entire being and cleans areas of me that would not be allowed to enter into the Holy Place.

I can now come near to GOD with a purified heart, clean body, firm hope concern for others and a desire to meet with others. The HOLY SPIRIT provides the ability to do go and show love. I am glad GOD allows me to be cleaned of all unrighteousness.

Challenge

  • What is “The Most Holy Place” the writer speaks about?
  • Have you ever felt that you have sinned too much to be loved and forgiven by GOD?
  • Has someone made you feel less than clean?
  • Will you turn your life to JESUS so HE can truly cleanse you and give you access to GOD who has great things planned for you today?

Purified Conscience

Purified Conscience

Hebrews 9: 11 But Christ has already come as the High Priest of the good things that are already here. The tent in which he serves is greater and more perfect; it is not a tent made by human hands, that is, it is not a part of this created world. 12 When Christ went through the tent and entered once and for all into the Most Holy Place, he did not take the blood of goats and bulls to offer as a sacrifice; rather, he took his own blood and obtained eternal salvation for us. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a burnt calf are sprinkled on the people who are ritually unclean, and this purifies them by taking away their ritual impurity. 14 Since this is true, how much more is accomplished by the blood of Christ! Through the eternal Spirit he offered himself as a perfect sacrifice to God. His blood will purify our consciences from useless rituals, so that we may serve the living God.

============

Wanting to serve the LORD was met with “Look at all the sinning you have been doing.” This battle was in my head and in my heart. I was trying to return to the LORD, but I felt my sins were too great.

  • I did not feel “good” enough to serve the LORD.
  • I did not feel “worthy” to serve the LORD in any way.
  • I did not feel “secure” enough to know I am a sinner who is saved, therefore I let “my” sin get in the way.

Paul, the assumed writer, gives everyone some great news. “CHRIST has already come as the High Priest of the good things that are already here.” He then goes on to explain how JESUS was the perfect sacrifice, unlike “useless rituals” that would temporarily cleanse until the person sinned again.

My Observations:

  • The Good News about JESUS has to remain “Good News” without the need for trying so hard.
  • JESUS died for my sins and that makes my relationship with HIM permanent.
  • By adding “useless rituals” onto JESUS’ death burial and resurrection, I am enslaving myself rather than being freed.

Feeling “not good enough” to serve the LORD is a major problem. I mean, believing that JESUS forgave me of all my sins should be enough, but sometimes I think there should be more. Perhaps I did something to make GOD mad or perhaps I said or did something wrong are the false thoughts that run through my mind. BUT GOD knows about this too.

HE took into account the fact that I would doubt HIS power to save me ultimately. HE knew I would try to jump in and start doing stuff to “prove” my worthiness to HIM. JESUS died for my doubt and for my trying to take control from HIM. HIS resurrection clears my conscience, knowing I am a sinner who serves the living GOD. I am glad JESUS took care of it “all!”

Challenge

  • Why does the writer use the words “useless rituals?”
  • Have you ever felt not good enough to serve GOD or to ask HIM for something?
  • Will you consider that you are being lied to and that JESUS was raised from the dead and that is all you and I need for a perfect relationship that is full of power and authority because JESUS has it today?

Heart Soil

Heart Soil

Hebrews 6: God blesses the soil which drinks in the rain that often falls on it and which grows plants that are useful to those for whom it is cultivated. But if it grows thorns and weeds, it is worth nothing; it is in danger of being cursed by God and will be destroyed by fire.

============

“Ha, ha, you don’t even know how to curse right” were the words that fueled me to learn how to curse “right.” I practiced my foul language and got it down to a science. After a while, I was listening t how comedians used this language in jokes. I soaked in every word I could listen to.

  • The more garbage I listened to, the more desensitized I became.
  • I used foul language to joke, but eventually used it to increase the level of an argument.
  • I wound up expressing frustration with foul language and brushed it off to “everyone else uses it.”

Paul the assumed writer, gives two types of soil, one that grows useful plants and one that grows thorns and weeds. Rather than looking at this as farming tips, Paul may have been speaking about the condition of the heart.

My Observations

  • Things that are placed in my heart will grow into something good or something terrible.
  • GOD wants to place HIS word in my heart, but if I have filled it with the garbage of the world, there will be no room for HIM to live.
  • GOD gets excited when I listen to HIM and HE grows “plants that are useful” from me listening to HIM.

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control are all things that can grow from my heart when I listen to GOD. I mean, when I follow HIS ways, the fruit of the SPIRIT overflows from my heart.  Unfortunately, the opposite happens when I purposefully disobey HIM.

When I put the world in my heart, it grows greed, hatred, lust, blame and unhealthy self-consciousness that reverberates through all I do. Lies appear to be real and the false Utopia of the world crashes down on me. BUT GOD cleans my heart and cultivates a place where HE can live and grow me. I am glad GOD chooses to stay with me.

Challenge

  • What soil sticks out to you from the writer?
  • Have you ever wanted to stop a behavior, but didn’t see how to?
  • Have you checked your heart to see if you have fallen?
  • Will you allow GOD to cleanse your heart HIS way so you can bear fruit for HIM today?

Exposed

Exposed

Hebrews 4: 12 The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It cuts all the way through, to where soul and spirit meet, to where joints and marrow come together. It judges the desires and thoughts of the heart. 13 There is nothing that can be hid from God; everything in all creation is exposed and lies open before his eyes. And it is to him that we must all give an account of ourselves.

============

After the night of drunken sex, I put on my best suit and went to church. Maybe this would erase the guilt, was my motive for going. As I transitioned from Sunday School to morning service, a guy called me out. “We had fun at the club last night!” “Why did he have to be there?” was my thought!

  • I didn’t want anyone to know that I went to clubs and had drunken sex.
  • I had plenty of sins that I was planning to take to my grave.
  • I felt embarrassed when I was exposed, but it turned out to be a relief.

Paul, the assumed writer, tells everyone about the power of the word of GOD. This is the revelation of how GOD interacts with humans, given through prophets, poets and priests. This revelation also includes the fact that everything in all creation is exposed to GOD.

My Observations

  • There is nothing I can hide from GOD.
  • The more I try to hide my sins, the harder it will be for me to confess them and to let go of them.
  • GOD called the Pharisees “hypocrites” because they refused to expose their own sins.

It is real easy for me to tell others “You have sinned” but it is tougher for me to say in front of everyone “I have sinned and her is how I did it.” I mean, it just feels better when the spotlight is not on me when it comes to something yucky. But GOD sees my yuckiness and loves me anyway.

There is nothing I can hide from GOD. HE sees every thought that pops in my head and allows me to decide to choose HIS way or mine. HE gives me HIS word as a revelation to HIS love and I have, at my fingertips, a guide that brings me back to HIS love. I gladly expose my sins I still make mistakes on and believe they will not sting as much when I stand before HIM someday.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about “Purpose” in this passage?
  • Have you ever done something wrong and felt so insecure about it that you plan on taking the hidden sin to your grave?
  • Are things going wrong in your life and you don’t know why?
  • Will you expose your heart to GOD and confess everything directly to JESUS so HE will be faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you of all unrighteousness today?

It Comes Out

It Comes Out

1 Timothy 5: 23 Do not drink water only, but take a little wine to help your digestion, since you are sick so often.

24 The sins of some people are plain to see, and their sins go ahead of them to judgment; but the sins of others are seen only later. 25 In the same way good deeds are plainly seen, and even those that are not so plain cannot be hidden.

============

Sneaking off from work seemed like a good idea. Others were doing it so I decided to try it. I went to my apartment and played cards until it was time to go punch out. It worked! Soon I made a habit. I even made plans during work. I wen home and cooked dinner. When I went to punch out, my supervisor asked. “Where were you and why do you smell like cooked food?”

  • I had gotten caught and I was embarrassed.
  • I disappointed my boss who believed in me.
  • I took for granted something I was supposed to be doing, and my hidden plans became exposed.

Paul turns from mentoring Timothy to encouraging him. He first expressed concern over Timothy’s health. He then gives some encouragement to Timothy, who may have been frustrated that the people he was leading were missing the value in his servanthood. He let Timothy know that even the smallest, hidden good deed will be seen.

My Observations

  • My hidden sin tends to make itself known at an inconvenient time.
  • JESUS forgave me for all my sins, hidden and plain to see.
  • It is more satisfying to live with a clear conscience and do good deeds for the LORD, than to keep hiding things in my heart that get me deeper and deeper into trouble.

Hidden things come out. I mean, the thing that I think I can hide and take to my grave is probably the thing that will hurt the most because GOD has to reveal it. “Well, HE forgives me, right?” Yes, but it may still have pain and at some point I got tired of causing my own pain and blaming it on everyone else or circumstances.

GOD sees my heart and wants me to ask HIM to live inside. HE then prompts me to do “good deeds” that serve HIS purpose of bringing people back to HIM. HE sees the tiniest hidden good deed and also shows HIS gratitude in ways that are amazing! I am so glad GOD cares and sees all good deeds.

Challenge

  • Can you feel the care from the writer?
  • Have you ever done a hidden sin and think it will never come out?
  • Will you confess your sins to GOD, including the sneaky, bitter, hateful things, so HE can be faithful and just to forgive you of those sins and cleanse you of all unrighteousness today?
  • Will you also start doing “good deeds” that are pleasing to the LORD today?

Prayer

Dear LORD, you know my deepest hidden sins. Please forgive me. YOU also know the deepest hidden sins of this reader. Make him or her able to confess to YOU these sins so YOU will forgive and cleanse. Please also fill his or her heart with YOUR good deeds today. amen

Letter of Recommendation

Letter of Recommendation

Philippians 2: 25 I have thought it necessary to send to you our brother Epaphroditus, who has worked and fought by my side and who has served as your messenger in helping me. 26 He is anxious to see you all and is very upset because you had heard that he was sick. 27 Indeed he was sick and almost died. But God had pity on him, and not only on him but on me, too, and spared me an even greater sorrow. 28 I am all the more eager, then, to send him to you, so that you will be glad again when you see him, and my own sorrow will disappear. 29 Receive him, then, with joy, as a believer in the Lord. Show respect to all such people as he, 30 because he risked his life and nearly died for the sake of the work of Christ, in order to give me the help that you yourselves could not give.

============

Working hard made me gain a reputation amongst the owners of the bowling alley. It was easy to get them to write a letter of recommendation for me. But on the job that I missed opening the office because I was hanging out partying, I could not get a letter. In fact, I was fired.

  • Both experiences shaped me.
  • I was reliable on one job and unreliable on another.
  • I did not know people were paying attention to me nor did I think it had any bearing on my future.

Paul spoke highly in his letter about Epaphroditus. He gave his best recommendation because both had gone through a lot together as they dedicated their life speaking about CHRIST. Like Paul, Epaphroditus “risked his life” for the sake of the work of CHRIST. Paul knew his belief was real.

My Observations

  • All of my actions are seen by GOD.
  • What is in my heart for others writes my letter of recommendation for myself.
  • GOD knows when I am insincere and when I am sincere, therefore HE places me in charge of things HE cares about based on what I can handle.

Faithfulness to me means continuing in the hope when things seem extremely difficult. I mean, when it looks like all hope is lost, my faith has to remain in CHRIST. This may be contrary to what humans recommend. BUT GOD sees my actions and rewards me when I sincerely follow HIM.

HE knows the impossible labels people may place on me that may stain my character and HE says “He is tail useful to ME.” Only GOD’s character is perfect, yet he takes imperfect beings like myself, and sends him or her to speak on JESUS’s behalf. I gladly accept the plan GOD has for me and am grateful HE recommends me.

Challenge

  • What stands out to you in this letter of recommendation?
  • Do you think living for GOD has to be hard and uncomfortable for everyone?
  • Will you simply “be” so you can live for CHRIST the way HE made you?
  • Will you also show respect for more believers and let GOD judge his or her actions so you can be filled with praise to GOD more often?

Declared Clean

Declared Clean

Ephesians 5: Since you are God's people, it is not right that any matters of sexual immorality or indecency or greed should even be mentioned among you. Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God. You may be sure that no one who is immoral, indecent, or greedy (for greed is a form of idolatry) will ever receive a share in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.

============

“How did I get here?” I asked myself. My “friends” were doing things that, at one point, I would have considered low down and underhanded. After a while, I was doing the same stuff or possibly worse. I was in trouble and had no one to help because they were in trouble too.

  • I was afraid to turn to GOD because my sins were piling up.
  • I was nervous of facing the consequences of my decisions.
  • I felt unclean, broken and worthless.

“Act right!” was seemingly the plea of Paul as he addressed how people were behaving. He saw the people give themselves over to sexual immorality, indecent behavior and obscene, profane and vulgar language. Greed had permeated their every thought. The warning was stern.

My Observations

  • If I confess my sins GOD is faithful and just to forgive me of my sins and cleanse me of all unrighteousness.
  • I need to repent or turn away from my sins to mature in CHRIST.
  • Nothing vulgar, obscene or greedy in me will be useful to GOD.

“Impossible” was my first reaction to this list. I mean I had pretty much committed the whole list and felt I had no place in GOD’s kingdom. Then I reread the first part of the passage. “Since you ARE GOD’s people.” GOD is the one who declared me righteous, not because of me or any action I did, rather it was because of JESUS and HIS action for me.

When JESUS died for me and was raised from the dead, I was now able to be cleansed of all my sins, past present and future. I was declared clean. But those who refuse the wonderful gift GOD has to offer will remain declared unclean. Salvation gives me freedom to choose GOD’s way. I am grateful HE guides me to sometimes choose HIM.

Challenge

  • What “share” is the writer speaking of?
  • Whether you agree or disagree with the list, what does improving your own life look like?
  • Have you ever had a complaint about your bank account being low or for not having enough?
  • Will you give thanks to GOD for what you have and where HE has you so you can grow in the way HE wants you to grow today?

Breaking Old Habits

Breaking Old Habits

Ephesians 4: 17 In the Lord's name, then, I warn you: do not continue to live like the heathen, whose thoughts are worthless 18 and whose minds are in the dark. They have no part in the life that God gives, for they are completely ignorant and stubborn. 19 They have lost all feeling of shame; they give themselves over to vice and do all sorts of indecent things without restraint.

20 That was not what you learned about Christ! 21 You certainly heard about him, and as his followers you were taught the truth that is in Jesus. 22 So get rid of your old self, which made you live as you used to—the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires. 23 Your hearts and minds must be made completely new, 24 and you must put on the new self, which is created in God's likeness and reveals itself in the true life that is upright and holy.

============

Scared and shamed, I peeped through the hole in the door of the women’s locker room at school. This made me want the “real thing.” In college I progressed to “the real thing”, but did it under the cover of night. Someone said to me “I saw your car parked overnight in front of a certain dorm.” He was proud of me.

  • I was no longer shamed.
  • I was progressing down a path where I was led by my desires.
  • I was ready to defend the dangerous path I was on in an ignorant and stubborn way.

Paul is very direct with his words as he addressed a concern with those who had given up on following purity as a means of worshipping GOD. Their lying minds had put them on a path where they were no longer ashamed of their actions, rather they had found a crowd who accepted their deceitful desires.

My Observations

  • Only GOD can provide a new heart and mind for me.
  • When life seems hopeless, I have a new self I can put on that is made by GOD.
  • GOD’s likeness is a way of life that I can strive for.

Getting rid of old habits is not always easy. I mean, when life’s pressures come knocking on my heart, I want to throw away self-control and indulge in the ways of the world for a moment of pleasure. BUT GOD wants different.

HE offers a better way that is full of life. GOD has a life that is full of truth which is upright and holy. HIS path is always right and HIS rewards will never fall away. I gladly surrender my life to GOD, daily.

Challenge

  • Was the message of the writer shocking to you?
  • Is there any part of you that seems to keep you from growing up that you struggle with?
  • Will you believe GOD gives you another chance daily because HE is willing to wipe away your sins?
  • Will you remain encouraged and ask GOD for HIS help with keeping you on HIS path so you can put on the “new self” as the answer with a new heart and new mind today?

Healthy Sorrow

Healthy Sorrow

2 Corinthians 7: For even if that letter of mine made you sad, I am not sorry I wrote it. I could have been sorry when I saw that it made you sad for a while. But now I am happy—not because I made you sad, but because your sadness made you change your ways. That sadness was used by God, and so we caused you no harm. 10 For the sadness that is used by God brings a change of heart that leads to salvation—and there is no regret in that! But sadness that is merely human causes death. 11 See what God did with this sadness of yours: how earnest it has made you, how eager to prove your innocence! Such indignation, such alarm, such feelings, such devotion, such readiness to punish wrongdoing! You have shown yourselves to be without fault in the whole matter.

============

“I’m sorry” I said to the officer. “You are sorry for speeding or are you sorry you got caught?” was the reply. Actually I was sorry I got caught because I loved speeding.

  • I was going to speed again.
  • I was actually angry rather than sorry.
  • I was so fixed on speeding that after the ticket, I invested in a radar detector.

Paul speaks about two types of sadness, one that is repentant towards GOD and one that appeases humans. He focuses the believer, who wants to repent, on a sorrow that brings life.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to want HIM in my life.
  • GOD wants me to see HIS ways are perfect and mine are not.
  • GOD wants me to be sorry for my sinful ways and give them to HIM, for only HE can change my ways.

It is humbling to say “I am sorry to the LORD.” I mean, first I must recognize that I am the one in the wrong and need HIS mercy. If I think I am “good” or the one who needs the apology because HE created me, then I will not see HIS deliverance.

When I examine my life, I cannot be proud. I mishandle family, friends and situations all the time. I can say “Sorry” all day on a human level, and the faults will remain. BUT GOD is willing to forgive me and cleanse me of anything I have done or am doing or will do. JESUS death was perfection and my belief in HIS resurrection cleanses me of all unrighteousness. I owe my life to HIM.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the two types of sadness?
  • What, if any, things in your life can you ask GOD for forgiveness?
  • When you admit something to GOD, do you feel free?
  • Can you help raise people up from their hurt so they can see GOD as a being of forgiveness?

Repairing Self-Destruction

2 Corinthians 7:1 All these promises are made to us, my dear friends. So then, let us purify ourselves from everything that makes body or soul unclean, and let us be completely holy by living in awe of God.

============

Feeling like a failure, I needed some “fun.” With a mountain of debt, a broken down car, kicked out of school again and being dumped, I wanted to feel good for a moment. I went to a convention and there were wild parties everywhere. But for some reason, I could not get into it this particular time.

  • I thought I could relieve myself if I did some things that I could hide.
  • I felt like I was already low, so sinning wouldn’t make me any lower.
  • I wondered if there was an alternative to the self-destructive path I was on.

Paul speaks softly regarding purity. He doesn’t rant or yell, rather tries to convince everyone that JESUS made promises that were everlasting. These eternal promises should be recognized, but sin blinds us to that well deserved recognition. Paul give a better way of looking at purity. Be in awe of GOD.

My Observations

  • JESUS did an amazing thing by volunteering to die and be raised from the dead, just for me.
  • GOD’s mercy is amazing because HE sees the sin I hold onto tightly and still forgives me.
  • The HOLY SPIRIT amazingly lives in my body, seeing every thought and action and pleads on my behalf for forgiveness.

“Stop sinning” is easy to say when everything is going right. I mean, when the world seems to be falling apart, sin seems to knock on the door of my heart with its grimy hands at my most vulnerable time. BUT GOD sees all and loves me when I’m low.

HE understands every situation and cleanses me of all unrighteousness when I ask. But what if I ask and sin again? HE forgives me and cleanses me over and over and over and over and over again. He fills me with another chance each day and gives me a better path to walk on. I am in awe that GOD’s grace “is” sufficient.

Challenge

  • Does the writer limit the boundaries of purity?
  • Is there any difference between using slanderous words and sexual sin?
  • What do you notice about the individual walk implied in this passage?
  • Will you remain in awe of GOD’s forgiveness and allow HIM to cleanses you of all unrighteousness today and again tomorrow?

Set Up For Success

Set Up For Success

Romans 11: 16 If the first piece of bread is given to God, then the whole loaf is his also; and if the roots of a tree are offered to God, the branches are his also. 17 Some of the branches of the cultivated olive tree have been broken off, and a branch of a wild olive tree has been joined to it. You Gentiles are like that wild olive tree, and now you share the strong spiritual life of the Jews. 18 So then, you must not despise those who were broken off like branches. How can you be proud? You are just a branch; you don't support the roots—the roots support you.

============

Blame the last person for the mess so the new person could look like the hero, was the normal habit at this particular company. I got into the position and everything seemed to be falling apart. People were blaming “my” department and I considered using the deflection tactic.

  • There were times when I wanted to blame someone else for the mess I was in.
  • There were times when I wanted to set someone up for failure so I could succeed.
  • There were times when I wanted to show how wrong someone else was so I could look right.

Paul spoke about GOD’s currency, namely people. He uses two analogies; one about bread and the other about olive trees. In both analogies, Paul explains that everything is GOD’s. If a group of people are given to GOD then the entire tribe is also given to HIM. If a group has been adopted into the family, those adopted should not despise the family members who left the family.

  • GOD wants me to recognize I am accepted by HIM only because of HIS grace.
  • GOD wants me to understand that all of us have gone astray so I must be humble because HE brought me back to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to show love to those who are pursuing religion versus believing in JESUS as the Savior.

Setting people up for success means not speaking badly about them. I mean, I must look at my own sins and avoid pointing out someone else’s. I am a sinner and the only reason I can even speak JESUS’ name is because HE pursued me when I was not looking for HIM.

I have nothing to be proud of. My righteousness is like a pile of poop. I am grateful I can point to JESUS whose righteousness cleans all who believe.

  • Are you looking at someone, thinking they are not following GOD correctly?
  • Do you have a problem with the way someone sings, speaks or preaches about GOD?
  • Will you get rid of your pride and be thankful JESUS is your Savior so HE can clean your heart to share in the “strong spiritual life” today?

Fully Assembled

Fully Assembled

Romans 8: Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

============

Working on the furniture seemed pretty easy, though there were a lot of parts and instructions. I followed the instructions to the letter, but in the middle of assembly, I got distracted with some difficult news that I had to attend to. When I returned, the distraction replayed in my mind and I was not able to concentrate as I should. I missed several steps and had to disassemble the furniture and start over.

  • There have been times when I wanted to follow all the steps but could not.
  • There have been times when I was willing to follow all the steps but got distracted.
  • There have been times when I tried to follow the steps, but life got in the way and I found myself skipping a few rules that I should have followed.

Paul had just posed a serious question. “Who can save a wretch like me?” He was given the answer. JESUS CHRIST is the Savior to those who believe in HIS resurrection and the need to be saved.

Paul now explains that there is no condemnation to those who believe in CHRIST JESUS. GOD did not leave salvation up to chance, because humans would easily get distracted.

  • GOD wants me to know I am free from condemnation.
  • GOD wants me to know that JESUS has given me life.
  • GOD wants me to know that the instructions I could not follow were forgiven by the one who followed every instruction, namely JESUS.

Being born into sin starts me off with an impossibility. I mean, there is no good that I can do to erase the sin of my birth, which is tied to Adam’s sin of disobedience in the Garden of Eden. BUT GOD did the impossible.

HE volunteered to become a human, followed every rule HE gave humans, was falsely blamed for every sin, murdered by humans and raised to life to receive all authority. HE knew I would be condemned forever, so HE took care of the problem. I am broken BUT JESUS put me back together, fully assembled. I am grateful I now fill the righteous requirement because of JESUS.

  • Do you think you are in control of your life?
  • Are you distracted and missing a few steps, requiring you to start over again?
  • Will you place your trust in JESUS, so you can have peace in HIM, so HE can provide clear direction for the purpose of your life today?

Dirty But Functional

Dirty But Functional

Romans 7: So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

============

Snow was coming down in the frigid temperatures. Salt was used to melt the snow on the roads in this region. Blowing winds and a sloppy mess caused my windshield to become so dirty, I used up all of the windshield washer fluid.

With a long way to drive, I had to pull over to wipe off the windshield. I opened the trunk and all I had was a dirty grimy towel that I sometimes used to wipe off oily stuff. I found one small corner of the towel that was clean enough to wipe away enough dirt to keep going.

  • That dirty towel reminds me of the dirty stuff I do.
  • That dirty towel was stained so much, that it seemed like it could never be used to clean anything.
  • That dirty towel was resurrected from the trunk and was now made useful to make something clean.

Paul explains what JESUS did for humanity. He states that those who believe in JESUS have also died to the Law. In other words, the Law shows all humans are guilty and deserve death. All humans sin, which causes other humans to sin. BUT GOD took the dirt away.

  • GOD saw my sins and cleaned my heart so HE could use me.
  • GOD knows my righteousness is like a filthy rag, yet HE placed HIS HOLY SPIRIT in me anyway.
  • GOD allowed JESUS to become the filthy, dirty, blamed thing to die just for me and HE raised HIM from the dead, clean, to have all authority.

When JESUS was raised from the dead, HE was given all power to clean those who believe in HIM. I mean, the Law no longer holds the sentence of death for me because JESUS freed me from my sins.

HE knows I still sin so HE takes the tiny corner of faith I have to wipe off some of the dirt from someone else’s eyes. HE then takes it one step further. HE opens my eyes and that persons’ eyes to see it was HIM that did all the cleaning. I am grateful JESUS can still use a dirty, but functional person like me.

  • Do you think your sins are too big to be used by GOD?
  • Are you being convicted for the sins you did last night or are planning to do today?
  • Will you stop thinking you can clean yourself up and allow JESUS to clean your heart so HE can use your dirty story to help someone believe in HIM today?

Caught in the Middle

Caught in the Middle

Romans 6: 17 But thanks be to God! For though at one time you were slaves to sin, you have obeyed with all your heart the truths found in the teaching you received. 18 You were set free from sin and became the slaves of righteousness. 19 (I use everyday language because of the weakness of your natural selves.) At one time you surrendered yourselves entirely as slaves to impurity and wickedness for wicked purposes. In the same way you must now surrender yourselves entirely as slaves of righteousness for holy purposes.

============

“Yes” I said emphatically to one person who had a very strong opinion. I was neutral, but wanted to make her feel better by agreeing. A person with an opposing opinion asked me to agree with opposite side of the argument. I said “Yes” emphatically, wanting to treat him the same. One day they both tried to drag me into their argument. I was in the middle of a mess.

There have been times when I tried to live in the middle.

There have been times when I wanted to have the best of two opposing worlds.

There have been times when I dabbled in some good things and some not so good things.

Paul thanks GOD for those who have chosen to listen to the teaching of the Way of JESUS. He then gave a choice. Either keep serving sin or start serving GOD for HIS purpose. There was no middle ground presented.

GOD wants me to choose HIM or not.

GOD wants me to seek HIM or not.

GOD wants me to be with HIM or not.

Lukewarm belief in GOD disgusts HIM. HE said “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!” Trying to straddle the fence between being sinful and righteous is impossible in GOD’s eyes.

I mean, HE can help those who are disappointed with HIM because someone misrepresented HIS love and abused people, turning them against HIM. HE can also protect those who are totally for HIM, fighting along side HIM daily. HE detests those who try to justify sin and be try to be “good.” I am glad JESUS is the only one who is good and saved me anyway. I choose HIM.

Are you picking and choosing parts of the Bible to believe in?

Do you find some of GOD’s rules seem to be “unfair” so you refuse to follow them?

Will you surrender trying to live your life in the middle, in between sin and GOD, so you can be used for HIS purpose today?

Just Walk Away

Just Walk Away

Romans 6: What shall we say, then? Should we continue to live in sin so that God's grace will increase? Certainly not! We have died to sin—how then can we go on living in it? For surely you know that when we were baptized into union with Christ Jesus, we were baptized into union with his death. By our baptism, then, we were buried with him and shared his death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life.

============

“Okay Lord, I will follow YOUR ways” I said. I finally meant it this time. After a long time, my life had changed. I was seeing people as I had never seen them before. I saw the hurt and those in need.

My life was making a difference. But a “friend” popped up and asked if I wanted to “hit the clubs?” He needed a “wingman” so he could find some to have sex with a willing lady. I did miss the lifestyle. “Maybe this one time.” I thought. It made me want to stop following GOD’s ways.

  • There have been many times when I wanted to “take a break” from GOD.
  • There have been many times when I wanted to “go on vacation” from GOD.
  • There have been many times when I wanted to “do a little sin” because a little won’t hurt me, right? Wrong!

Paul explains a dilemma that believers in CHRIST face. If I am saved from “all” my sins, then should I keep sinning? Paul explains that we have died to our sins when we believe in CHRIST. Paul then explains that our baptism was a display to show we agree with JESUS’ death and resurrection.

  • GOD wants me to put “that” sin to death little by little.
  • GOD wants me to stop doing “that” sin right now.
  • GOD wants me to remove “that” sin as an option.

Choosing to follow GOD publicly seems easy, but for those who sin like me, it is a hard choice. I mean, telling everyone I belong to JESUS, but secretly looking at porn didn’t cut it with GOD. I had to put it to death. HE sees “all” sin, small and large. GOD wants me to put the sin to death by focusing in on HIS glorious power. I am glad JESUS gave me a new life of purpose.

  • Are you struggling with giving up a particular sin?
  • Are you focusing on the sin too much?
  • Will you forgive yourself by knowing JESUS has forgiven you so you can focus on the purpose HE has for you?
  • Will you ask GOD to help you just walk away from certain people who drag you back into the old life today?
