Response to Darkness – Hard Heart

Response to Darkness – Hard Heart

Exodus 10: 24 Then Pharaoh called to Moses and said, “Go, serve the Lord; only let your flocks and your herds be kept back. Let your little ones also go with you.”

25 But Moses said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock also shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind. For we must take some of them to serve the Lord our God, and even we do not know with what we must serve the Lord until we arrive there.”

27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28 Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”

29 So Moses said, “You have spoken well. I will never see your face again.”

============

After the supernatural darkness was lifted, Pharaoh called for Moses to tell him that he would let the people go, but the flocks and herds had to stay. Moses told Pharaoh that the livestock had to go as well. Pharaoh hardened his heart and said “Get away from me! Take heed to yourself and see my face no more! For in the day you see my face you shall die!”

My Observations:

  • Pharaoh was trying to steal the remainder of the livestock he had not already stolen.
  • Pharaoh thought he was in control after the plague was over.
  • Pharoah threatened Moses, proving that he would never open his heart up and never would bow down to GOD.

The limiting belief of thinking he was a god would be Pharaoh’s downfall. He was leading his nation into total spiritual disaster, all while thinking his abuse of power was justified. GOD was dismantling the limiting belief that any human can be looked at as a god.

We treat celebrities, politicians and religious leaders as people who we should temporarily worship. Our limiting beliefs give them power or make us look at ourselves as powerless. BUT GOD says something very different. HE took an eighty year old man with a stick and placed him in front of the most powerful man in the land, namely Pharaoh. HE methodically dismantled Egyptian limiting beliefs, one by one. GOD was not finished.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about Pharaoh’s threat?
  • What limiting beliefs do you have about age, power, or titles?
  • Is your secret pursuit of power worth battling GOD for HIS deserved spot?

Nations and People Groups 5 of 6

Nations and People Groups 5 of 6

Genesis 10:15 Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth; 16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed. 19 And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.

============

Canaan’s list seems different than the rest. GOD goes into detail about people groups and where they were dispersed. Noah’s curse on Canaan was heard by GOD, Canaan seemed to be an influential leader. He seemed to oppose GOD while seeking power. He may have made his father Ham go into Noah’s tent, mocking nakedness.

Ham then had to tell people what he saw. Noah did not curse Ham, rather he cursed Canaan, the source of the problem. After the curse, Canaan may have wanted to ensure it would never come true.

My Observations:

  • Canaan’s decisions caused him to speak against GOD.
  • Some of Canaan’s followers took beliefs into the founding of Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • GOD allowed Canaan to lead for a season, but his kingdom fell.

Seeking power seems to be a recurring them that is a problem with humans to GOD. HE is the source of life and strength, but HE shows incredible restraint when humans challenge HIM. GOD showed us a different route that came after the flood. HE would listen to people who sought after HIM.

Not just anyone could place a curse on people and make GOD agree that it is just. GOD listened to Noah because Noah spent most of his ark building days trying to convince people to follow GOD. Even after Noah’s family was saved, GOD saw the evil in the hearts of those who did not believe in HIS ways.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD go into detail about people groups and locations to Moses?
  • Have you ever got mad at GOD because you or someone else was not in power?
  • Can you surrender your power to GOD so HIS will be done through you today?

Nations and People Groups 4 of 6

Nations and People Groups 4 of 6

Genesis 10: 13 Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim).

============

Returning back to the children of Ham, GOD mentions Mizraim to Noah. Mizraim is the founder of the Egyptian empire that would prove to be a challenge for a long period of time. Mizraim may have also tried to prove the curse of Noah was not valid, nor was the GOD he followed. One of his son’s, Casluhim, birthed the Philistine empire.

My Observations:

  • Mizraim or Egypt eventually saw people as property.
  • The Egyptian empire would enslave many people, which seems contrary to the curse of Canaan.
  • People who seek power over one another may dominate for a season, but fall hard when the LORD says so.

Wow! Egyptians and Philistines! GOD allowed groups of people to be born and walk in disbelief on HIM. They were highly intelligent, strong and highly admired. They struggled with the concept of a higher power, thinking humans could become a god.

It is amazing that GOD allowed people to create false gods and turn their backs to HIM. No matter what GOD has done in the past or present, they would not turn to HIM. Great empires were developed with wild human sacrifices. GOD was not weak, HE waited.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD mention the origin of Egypt and the Philistines to Moses?
  • Has GOD made a promise to you that has not come to fruition?
  • Will you allow GOD to work HIS plan through you as part of a greater plan for humanity?

Street Justice

Street Justice

Revelation 17: 15 The angel also said to me, “The waters you saw, on which the prostitute sits, are nations, peoples, races, and languages. 16 The ten horns you saw and the beast will hate the prostitute; they will take away everything she has and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and destroy her with fire. 17 For God has placed in their hearts the will to carry out his purpose by acting together and giving to the beast their power to rule until God's words come true.

18 “The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.”

============

After being robbed, I was shaken. I feared sitting in certain seats on the bus, or even going down certain streets. Someone said to me, “Don’t worry, those people who did you harm will face street justice.” In other words, someone will rob the robber.

  • I saw “street justice” happen to thugs in my neighborhood.
  • I heard about “street justice” happening to gang members.
  • I witnessed thugs beating up the thugs who once bullied me.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, got another statement from the angel who took him into the desert. The angel explained that the great city that caused humans to sin, would face “street justice’ from the beast and from those who may be leaders of countries. Their jealousy of the power would cause them to desire to take down part of Satan’s kingdom.

My Observations:

  • GOD will allow evil people to take down evil people.
  • GOD wants my heart to remain focused on HIM and not return evil for evil.
  • GOD does not want me to celebrate the demise of anyone, because it could happen to me.

“Turnabout is fair play” is a term that means, it is alright to do evil to someone who has done evil to me. But this causes a problem to the believe. I mean, the world may look away at my “street justice” BUT GOD will not look away. All my sins come with consequence. BUT GOD gives me a better way.

Instead of committing sin, GOD wants me to give my enemies over to HIM. “Vengeance is mine says the LORD, I will repay.” HE is sovereign and just to carry out what HE said HE would. HE sees the victim and the foe. HE knows who is the oppressor and listens to those who cry out to HIM. I give my enemies to GOD.

Challenge

  • Why does the angel remind the writer that the woman was the great city?
  • Have you ever been wronged and wanted to do something wrong to “that” person?
  • Will you give “that” person over to GOD so your conscience will be clean today?

Super Powers

Super Powers

Revelation 17: “This calls for wisdom and understanding. The seven heads are seven hills, on which the woman sits. They are also seven kings: 10 five of them have fallen, one still rules, and the other one has not yet come; when he comes, he must rule only a little while. 11 And the beast that was once alive, but lives no longer, is itself an eighth king who is one of the seven and is going off to be destroyed.

12 “The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet begun to rule, but who will be given authority to rule as kings for one hour with the beast. 13 These ten all have the same purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will fight against the Lamb; but the Lamb, together with his called, chosen, and faithful followers, will defeat them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings.”

============

Wanting to be a superhero, I grabbed a bath towel and tied it around my neck. The other kids did the same. We held our arms out in front of us and now, we were flying! We jumped, skipped, ran and made ray gun noises that had to be explained. “I just shot you with my ray powers!”

  • We wanted to be superheroes.
  • Even though there were a lot of us, our army was not strong.
  • When each household said it was time to come in, we had to lay down our pretense and go inside.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, was given the meaning of the seven heads and ten horns of the beast. During this time, people will think they are in power and will gather together to form a futile fight against JESUS.

My Observations:

  • I have no power, BUT JESUS, who has all authority, is my strength.
  • I have no authority, BUT JESUS, who has been place above everything, shares HIS authority with me.
  • I have no way to change situations, BUT JESUS, hears my cry and understands everything I can and will go through, and HE empathizes with me to provide the HOLY SPIRIT to guide me.

There is no power greater than JESUS. I mean, I cannot go anywhere the get away from HIS power, nor can I usurp HIS authority. Not height, depth or breadth can keep me away from HIS love. HE is worthy of all honor, praise and glory.

Humans rise to power temporarily, but if they do not bow to JESUS their efforts are futile. Their attempts to enslave or to take over the world will be met with the power and authority of JESUS who is LORD of lords and KING of kings! I place my faith in HIM.

Challenge

  • How did the angel get the writer’s attention?
  • Have you ever wanted to be in power?
  • Will you surrender your power to JESUS so HE will guide you through the HOLY SPIRIT to a place of victory today?

Affirmed

Affirmed

Jude 1: 12 With their shameless carousing they are like dirty spots in your fellowship meals. They take care only of themselves. They are like clouds carried along by the wind, but bringing no rain. They are like trees that bear no fruit, even in autumn, trees that have been pulled up by the roots and are completely dead. 13 They are like wild waves of the sea, with their shameful deeds showing up like foam. They are like wandering stars, for whom God has reserved a place forever in the deepest darkness.

============

“What about me?” I cried out to the LORD. I saw inexperienced people seem to excel, while I was sitting at my desk, waiting to be elevated. I asked mentors what I should do. “Promote yourself” they said. Something inside me took pause to the advice. A leader chose me and said “I am glad you are not like the others by doing self-promotion.”

  • I was actually going to start self- promoting.
  • I was tired of waiting to be noticed.
  • I wanted a crowd to affirm “my” talents.

Jude continues his warning. He originally was going to write about salvation, but the HOLY SPIRIT led him to discuss “godless people” who slipped in, pretending to know JESUS as the Savior, but had hidden agendas to acquire fame. Jude compares these people to “dirty spots”, Clouds with no rain, trees that produce no fruit and waves showing shameful deeds.

My Observations:

  • GOD sees when I cry out to HIM to make “me” famous instead of making HIM known.
  • GOD wants me to turn to HIM and point to HIS SON so I can be used by HIM to bear fruit.
  • GOD knows I need to focus on HIM versus focusing on fame so the world’s waves won’t pull me in.

Seeking affirmation can cause me problems. I mean, when I feel I need to be more famous, or “liked” by a crowd, I seek being noticed at every turn. This causes me to think only of myself and barely mention GOD. BUT HE has another way.

GOD wants my life to bear HIS fruit. My life is HIS and HE can decide how and when HE wants to use the gifts HE gave me. HE wants me ready and willing to be used by HIM, regardless of my fame. HE loves you and me and never leaves when times are tough. I am glad GOD helps us point people to HIM.

Challenge

  • What comparisons from the writer sticks out the most to you?
  • Have you ever gotten mad at GOD for making someone else famous?
  • Will you seek to make JESUS famous to those who are around you and be affirmed that HE loves you just the way you are today?

Priorities Addressed

Priorities Addressed

Jude 1: My dear friends, I was doing my best to write to you about the salvation we share in common, when I felt the need of writing at once to encourage you to fight on for the faith which once and for all God has given to his people. For some godless people have slipped in unnoticed among us, persons who distort the message about the grace of our God in order to excuse their immoral ways, and who reject Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord. Long ago the Scriptures predicted the condemnation they have received.

============

After planning and making several trips back and forth to the hardware store, I finished installing my sprinkler / irrigation system. I was excited and as I began to program watering times, clouds gathered. These clouds were darker than usual. Suddenly, tornado sirens sounded! But instead of rushing into the house, I finished setting my sprinkler system. The tornado touched down two blocks over. I should have gone inside.

  • Another priority came up that needed to be addressed immediately, but I ignored it.
  • A danger that threatened life arose and I did not take heed.
  • A warning was clearly given for me to take action, and I kept doing what I was doing.

Jude, human brother of JESUS, begins his letter with a strong warning. At first he was going to write about salvation. This topic, while extremely important, was put aside to address a more immediate problem, namely false teaching. He was aware of what people were saying about JESUS by those who pretended to be part of HIM but were not.

My Observations:

  • Many people mention the name of JESUS who do not believe the HE is GOD who became a human to die for the sins of humanity and was raised from the dead.
  • Those who do not believe, provide solutions that keeps him or her doing things that do not please GOD, trying to justify their actions using GOD’s name.
  • GOD sees my heart and wants me to fight for my faith to make sure I am not influenced by those who oppose HIM.

False teachers look like real teachers. I mean, when half truths are told and omissions take place, its hard to tell false teachers from real teachers. BUT GOD knows and HE is ready to point them out.

GOD sees the heart and know who is for HIM or against HIM.HE knew liars would talk about HIS SON in a negative way, yet HE allowed HIM to die on the cross for you and me. False teachers do not want to surrender their lives to this teaching, instead he or she add philosophies that may oppose CHRIST. I am glad GOD protects you and me form those who pretend to love GOD.

Challenge:

  • Why does the writer change the topic?
  • Have you ever heard something that sounded true enough to be credible, like commercials, yet were false?
  • Will you seek a relationship with JESUS by reading the Bible, HIS Word, today?

Unstuck on Titles

Unstuck on Titles

3 John 1:I wrote a short letter to the church; but Diotrephes, who likes to be their leader, will not pay any attention to what I say. 10 When I come, then, I will bring up everything he has done: the terrible things he says about us and the lies he tells! But that is not enough for him; he will not receive the Christians when they come, and even stops those who want to receive them and tries to drive them out of the church!

11 My dear friend, do not imitate what is bad, but imitate what is good. Whoever does good belongs to God; whoever does what is bad has not seen God.

12 Everyone speaks well of Demetrius; truth itself speaks well of him. And we add our testimony, and you know that what we say is true.

============

“Do you believe in JESUS?” someone laughingly asked me. “I am the head of the deacons and the chairman of the Trustees” I replied. “Yes, but do you believe in JESUS?” was the follow up question that I could have simply said “Yes” to.

  • I was seeking a title in church without knowing it.
  • I wanted to be known for “my” accomplishments.
  • I wanted a resume versus GOD’s kingdom to grow.

John addressed church pride. He provided two opposing examples, namely Diotrephes and Demetrius. The first was the example of arrogance while the latter was the example of truth. One liked church titles, power and to be “heard” while the other built a reputation of serving people with the truth.

My Observations:

  • Having  a title in church is okay as long as I use the title to help organize who does what.
  • Recognizing JESUS as the only one who is the head of the church, makes me less prone to desire what should be HIS.
  • My motive for serving in church should be based on the truth that JESUS rose from the dead and wants everyone to believe in HIS saving power.

Sometimes titles can trip me up. I mean, whether it is corporate or public or church, titles can make me think I am more special than others. If the title gets to my head, then my actions and words begin to leave GOD out and the focus becomes more on “my” title or the brand of the church. BUT GOD wants to be known.

HE wants my words to point to HIM constantly. The whole purpose of gathering together in the first place is to recognize JESUS as the Savior while addressing barriers to this belief. We sing, pray and acknowledge JESUS while not turning into the world. I gladly give up titles to be known for speaking GOD’s truth.

Challenge

  • Who does the writer warn not to imitate?
  • Have you ever wanted a title or wanted to be recognized as a public figure?
  • Will you point your life to CHRIST whether you have a title or not so HE can draw many people to HIMSELF through you today?

No Hidden Agenda

No Hidden Agenda

Titus 1: For since a church leader is in charge of God's work, he should be without fault. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered, or a drunkard or violent or greedy for money. He must be hospitable and love what is good. He must be self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the message which can be trusted and which agrees with the doctrine. In this way he will be able to encourage others with the true teaching and also to show the error of those who are opposed to it.

============

Wanting to be in power, I complained about the current leadership. I spoke about how badly things were being run with another person. Soon the grousing turned into a few people. I would then slip in a few of “my” solutions to show how things would be better if “I” were in charge.

  • I wanted power.
  • I did not think slander was a problem as long as I was doing it.
  • I complained, thinking I knew better.

Let me say that many men have misused the bible to hold down women. This passage had cultural influences of males being the primary spokespeople in a church structure. Gender bias was not Paul’s battle so he went with the structure of that day. The suggestions he gives to Titus cross genders and apply to all. “Be” genuine when it comes to speaking about JESUS.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to “be hospitable.”
  • GOD wants me to “be self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.”
  • GOD wants me to “be trusted and agree with the doctrine” so I can encourage others and correct few.

When I have a hidden agenda of being in power, I act differently. I mean I complain about him or her versus praising GOD for what HE Is doing. To “be” in charge of anything, GOD wants to know I can “be” trusted with HIS love for others. This will show in how I treat people.

HE wants men and women who are willing to “be” aware of themselves and have the discipline to leave selfishness behind to serve others. I am glad GOD accepts me and you in spite of our sinful nature.

Challenge

  • What characteristics from the writer sticks out to you?
  • Are there some areas in your life that you need GOD to grow you?
  • Will you seek growth by GOD by asking for help in areas HE needs to grow you so you can serve HIS Kingdom today?

Arouse the Love

Arouse the Love

! Timothy 1: I want you to stay in Ephesus, just as I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia. Some people there are teaching false doctrines, and you must order them to stop. Tell them to give up those legends and those long lists of ancestors, which only produce arguments; they do not serve God's plan, which is known by faith. The purpose of this order is to arouse the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a genuine faith.

============

Angered by the driver darting in front of me, I yelled out in fury. “You can’t do that!” was my outburst. But words were not enough. I darted into the next lane, hoping to pass the reckless driver, but traffic did not allow me to “win the prize” of getting in front. I drove angrily the rest of the trip.

  • I was affected by something out of my control.
  • I was easily taken away from peace to rage.
  • I wanted to “teach” the driver a lesson, but this lesson had the wrong motive.

Paul warns Timothy about those who were practicing false teaching. He sent an order to stop their practice of arguing over lineage. He also told them to focus on faith in JESUS. Lastly, he presents Timothy with purpose.

My Observations

  • A pure heart can only be provided by GOD when HE dwells inside me.
  • A clear conscience can only be obtain when GOD forgives me.
  • A genuine faith can only be fostered when it is placed in JESUS.

Believing that I am better than someone else because of my ancestors is a lie. I mean, every human is a sinner, so no one is better than the next. JESUS deserves the praise and that should be my focus. HIS love should be aroused in my purpose.

HE gave me the HOLY SPIRIT who cleanse my heart when I soil it. HE helps me forgive myself when I fail. HE guides me to the truth which is JESUS, upon which I can place my faith. I am glad GOD’s love is aroused towards me and you.

Challenge

  • Why did the writer give the recipient this warning?
  • Have you ever wanted to feel superior to someone else?
  • Will you accept GOD’s purpose for your life and arouse HIS love today?

Resolute

Resolute

Colossians 2: I tell you, then, do not let anyone deceive you with false arguments, no matter how good they seem to be. For even though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, and I am glad as I see the resolute firmness with which you stand together in your faith in Christ.

============

Wanting to grow, I listened to “successful” people. One person on the rise gave me some advice that seemed a little off, but what did I know. It turns out, this person ended up being fired for fraud.

  • I did not know who to believe.
  • I tried to go on instinct but wasn’t getting anywhere.
  • I listened to people who I thought had it together, but it turned out that they had flaws.

Paul gives a stern warning about people who are deceivers. These people provided very convincing false arguments that seemed to be good at the time. Paul commends those who had “resolute firmness” as they decided to stand for CHRIST.

My Observations

  • Seeking human wisdom can sometimes get me in trouble, but GOD never fails me.
  • Getting advice from people who do not believe in JESUS may lead me away from HIM.
  • GOD wants me to have absolute resolve in my belief in JESUS.

No turning back, is a term used to illustrate going down a path and not returning back to the beginning of the path. When I decided to believe in JESUS, this was a one way path. All troubles, trials and tribulations  I face on the path should not turn me away from JESUS. Unfortunately there have been many times when I felt like giving up on HIM.

My walk was not as firm when I fell into temptation or when another path seemed “greener.” I would go with the flow of human advice and wind up in worse shape than the path I was supposed to be on. Fortunately for me, GOD welcomes me back to HIS path. HE picks me up and gives me resolve to follow HIM no matter what.

Challenge

  • What deception do you think the writer is speaking of?
  • Have you ever wanted something that you knew was “wrong”, yet you pursued it anyway?
  • Will you seek the one and only truth from which you can base all your decisions, namely believing in JESUS today?

Raised From Exhaustion

Raised From Exhaustion

Philippians 3: Not only those things; I reckon everything as complete loss for the sake of what is so much more valuable, the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have thrown everything away; I consider it all as mere garbage, so that I may gain Christ and be completely united with him. I no longer have a righteousness of my own, the kind that is gained by obeying the Law. I now have the righteousness that is given through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith. 10 All I want is to know Christ and to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings and become like him in his death, 11 in the hope that I myself will be raised from death to life.

============

After running out of gas again, I vowed to keep a couple of gallons in the tank. Being on the side of the road without gas was frustrating! I woke up, needing to be someplace; jumped in the jalopy of a car and it would not start. The battery was dead. “Ugh! I just got gas!”

  • Just when I thought I did everything right, something else went wrong.
  • “When will it all come together for me?” was my cry in disappointment.
  • I had lost hope and was exhausted because there were too many things “I” needed to fix.

“Achievement” and “Self-Righteousness” were attitudes Paul addressed. Following the Law to the letter was something he no longer wished to “achieve.” GOD had opened his eyes to the fact that he had become “self-righteous” and was persecuting those who sought JESUS. He looked at his actions as a loss.

My Observations

  • JESUS is my only true salvation.
  • Believing that I can change GOD’s mind by acting good for a short period of time, causes me to be exhausted.
  • Connecting my “dead battery” of trying too hard to the power of JESUS’ resurrection gives me endless hope that cannot be exhausted.

Running on empty could mean I was trying too hard to please GOD. I mean, JESUS died for me, was raised from the dead and sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me. I had nothing to do with that. I should praise HIM continually, but I find a way to attempt to control GOD so everything will go “my” way.

When “bad” things happen, I try to do the Law “better.” BUT GOD sees through this filthy righteousness. All HE wants me to do is to place my faith in JESUS. I am glad I can place my hope in HIS resurrection and look forward to being with HIM eternally.

Challenge

  • What does the writer consider a complete loss?
  • Have you ever thought you were doing things perfectly and still not pleasing GOD?
  • Have you ever tried to convince GOD that you deserve better because you sinned less last week?
  • Will you place your full hope in JESUS and allow HIM to guide you through life without needing to achieve HIS love that HE already has for you?

Powerful Powerlessness

Powerful Powerlessness

2 Corinthians 11: 30 If I must boast, I will boast about things that show how weak I am. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus—blessed be his name forever!—knows that I am not lying. 32 When I was in Damascus, the governor under King Aretas placed guards at the city gates to arrest me. 33 But I was let down in a basket through an opening in the wall and escaped from him.

============

Feeling powerless was old, so I decided to do something about it. I was tired of being pushed around by bullies. I joined a gym and started lifting weights. The stronger I got, the more I noticed how large the bullies were. One bully wanted me to join him to fight other bullies in a bar.

  • I thought strength was the answer.
  • I thought power was something worthy of attaining.
  • I thought “I” could protect myself if I just got stronger.

Paul says something the world disagrees with. He boasts about being weak. He then gave an example of how the rich and powerful wanted to stop him from speaking about the King of kings, namely JESUS. Though powerless, he was protected from harm.

My Observations

  • My weakest times are when I am most powerful in GOD’s eyes.
  • Admitting “I cannot do this alone and I need GOD to handle this” is the most powerful statement I can say.
  • Asking GOD for HIS will to be done is more powerful than trying to manipulate HIM to do “my” bidding.

Yielding to GOD is extremely powerful. I mean, when I want something so bad, that I worry about it and lay awake thinking about it, I get frustrated, confused and maybe even a little doubtful. But there is a way to approach the chaos that seems to leave me powerless. Let GOD handle it HIS way.

GOD has a purpose for me and for those who believe in HIS SON. The enemy wants me to think the circumstance is helpless. BUT GOD’s power is the ultimate power and HE is in control. HE owns every minute and every circumstance must go before HIM for HIS approval. I am glad I can say “YOUR will be done” and HE shows HE cares

Challenge

  • Why did the writer choose this example?
  • What examples of weakness that brings power can you think of?
  • Will you let GOD handle your current situation and admit you need HIM for protection, guidance, strength and love today?

In loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Farley and Mr. Davis

Keeping It Real

Keeping It Real

2 Corinthians 11: 12 I will go on doing what I am doing now, in order to keep those other “apostles” from having any reason for boasting and saying that they work in the same way that we do. 13 Those men are not true apostles—they are false apostles, who lie about their work and disguise themselves to look like real apostles of Christ. 14 Well, no wonder! Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light! 15 So it is no great thing if his servants disguise themselves to look like servants of righteousness. In the end they will get exactly what their actions deserve.

Looking at the “mistakes” my peers made in other departments gave me a way to mention how “good” my department was doing. Competition was fierce over getting budget and I felt the pressure to survive. One day an issue did arise in my area. Suddenly, I was being scrutinized instead of praised.

  • I was busy looking at someone else’s problems.
  • I was focused on what other people were doing and not paying attention to what I was supposed to do.
  • I was insecure about me so I took attention off of me and put it on someone else.

Paul said a mouthful when he wrote the words “I will go on doing what I am doing.” Instead of spending time telling people about every detail of how the false apostles were disguising themselves to look like angels of light, he had to do what GOD called him to do so he would not fall.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to focus my attention on my relationship with HIM.
  • GOD wants me to see that I am the one who needs salvation, direction and encouragement.
  • GOD wants me to be true to HIS word.

Keeping it real with GOD is important. I mean, HE does not want to hear “but he” or “but she” from me. HE may ask me “How did you respond in the situation?” or “Did you use the weapons of love and patience I gave you?” The only response I can say to HIM is “No.”

BUT HE gives me many other chances to grow up and try out HIS valuable weapons. He also wants me prepared for daily attacks from the enemy’s attacks. HE gives me truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the HIS word as my daily protection. I am glad JESUS forgives my mistakes and gives me another chance each day.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about the war between “good” and “evil” in this passage?
  • Do you think you are responsible for fighting false messages said by others?
  • Have you ever messed up and needed grace?
  • Will you seek a solid relationship with JESUS and make HIM LORD of your life so you can have a “real” abundant life today?

Dual Life

1 Corinthians 10: 18 Consider the people of Israel; those who eat what is offered in sacrifice share in the altar's service to God. 19 Do I imply, then, that an idol or the food offered to it really amounts to anything? 20 No! What I am saying is that what is sacrificed on pagan altars is offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be partners with demons. 21 You cannot drink from the Lord's cup and also from the cup of demons; you cannot eat at the Lord's table and also at the table of demons. 22 Or do we want to make the Lord jealous? Do we think that we are stronger than he?

============

Seeing the rated “R” movie put me on a path to wanting to see a rated “X” movie which put me on the path to wanting to try the real thing. I was “good” by comparison. But something inside me along the way said “This is wrong.” The further I went each step along the way, there was something saying “Stop.”

  • There have been many times when I wanted to do whatever I wanted to do.
  • There have been many times when I wanted to live any way I wanted to live.
  • There have been many times when I wanted to justify my sinful choices before GOD.

Paul explains that, while an idol has no power, an altar offered to demons is taking things one step further. He warns everyone not to partner with demons because there is no way to expect to be with GOD when partnered with demons.

  • GOD wants me to let go of my path and follow HIS.
  • GOD wants me to check if I am serving HIM or my own selfish desires.
  • GOD wants me to drink from the LORD’s cup and eat at HIS table only.

Follow GOD or follow self, that is the choice. I mean, HE does give extreme freedom to do what I want to do and justify my actions. BUT HE sees the heart. HE is the one who knows my future and HE is the only one who can forgive. HE wants me to turn from “my” ways and turn to HIS way. I gladly let go of my way.

  • Are you trying to serve two masters?
  • Do you realize you cannot serve the world and serve GOD?
  • Will you let go of anything you may have inadvertently partnered with that is not of GOD and follow HIS way so HE can guide you to HIS abundant life today?

Taking it Seriously

Taking it Seriously

1 Corinthians 4: 18 Some of you have become proud because you have thought that I would not be coming to visit you. 19 If the Lord is willing, however, I will come to you soon, and then I will find out for myself the power which these proud people have, and not just what they say. 20 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of words but of power. 21 Which do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a whip, or in a spirit of love and gentleness?

============

“Do you know how to do this?” was the serious question the interviewer had for me. I was a programmer and he asked if I could show a heart beating on a screen during surgery. I had to say “No” because it was a life or death situation.

  • There have been many times when I had to take what I was doing seriously.
  • There have been times when I was not prepared for something a little more serious.
  • There have been times when I wanted the title without the responsibility.

Paul heard of people who were speaking nice words, but were doing it without the power associated with the Kingdom of GOD. He points out that it is not what is said, but the power attached to the words.

  • GOD wants me to take HIS Word seriously.
  • GOD wants me to live by HIS words, not just say them to look good in front of people.
  • GOD wants me to speak with authority because I live with authority.

Speaking about GOD needs to be taken seriously. I mean, it can be fashionable to post a scripture on my car, but it would be powerless if my driving is counter to the scripture. I am powerless when I use the phrase “Do as I say, not what I do.”

Fortunately for me, GOD is the power. I may make mistakes, but HIS power to forgive me gives me the authority to speak about HIM. I can say “JESUS forgave me for my sins” with all authority, because it points to HIM, not to me. There is nothing more serious than GOD’s kingdom. I am glad JESUS is my Savior. I take HIS Word of love seriously.

  • Are you posting scripture recklessly?
  • Do you take GOD’s name lightly?
  • Will you use GOD’s Word with the seriousness HE has revealed to you so you can speak with the authority needed to grow the Kingdom of GOD today?

False Facts

Acts 19: 35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? 36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash. 37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. 38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges. 39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly. 40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.” 41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.

============

With passion, I quoted some information to a group. After many moments of arguing, someone pulled me to the side and said “The information you are quoting is wrong.” The person showed me the correct information and I was thoroughly embarrassed. I had to now, go and correct what I had passionately argued over.

  • There were times when I wanted to be heard more than being right.
  • There were times when I wanted to exert power, so I got into arguments.
  • There were times when I quoted things as fact when they may not have been true.

An official of the city was finally able to quiet the rioting. But when he spoke, he told everyone about Ephesus being the guardian of the temple goddess Artemis and her relationship with heaven. He quoted this as an undeniable fact. The crowd dispersed, but what was heard?

  • GOD wants me to learn about HIM.
  • GOD wants me to understand HE is the only GOD.
  • GOD wants me to speak the truth about JESUS being the one and only SON of GOD.

Being part of a group can sometimes outweigh telling the truth. I mean, when I feel empowered to speak “a” truth, it feels good to be validated by a local group. BUT GOD wants me to be brave enough to speak “the” truth.

GOD is the only GOD. There is no other. HIS SON, JESUS, along with the HOLY SPIRIT are inseparable, all knowing, all seeing and all powerful. HE revealed facts that cannot be refuted and JESUS’ return cannot be stopped. I am grateful for these facts in which I live my life by.

  • What facts are you willing to die over?
  • Are the facts you live by worth losing eternal life?
  • Will you place your passion on JESUS versus manmade facts that conveniently change often?

I’ll Just Buy It

Acts 8: 18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”

24 Then Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”

25 So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

============

Hearing the preacher preach about giving, I felt led to fill up the offering plate. I mean if everyone in the small gathering knew what I did the night before, I would be embarrassed. “Maybe if I give money to a church, then my sinfulness will go away” I thought.

  • There were times when I gave out of guilt.
  • There were times when I thought I could give to a church so I could be forgiven.
  • There were times when I tried to buy GOD’s favor because the preaching made me think that’s what HE wanted.

Simon saw GOD’s power being used through the apostles. He wanted to know how they had this special power and was willing to pay for it. Peter condemned Simon’s request because it was rooted from an evil desire to “buy power.”

  • GOD wants me to ask HIM for forgiveness of my sins.
  • GOD wants me to have a relationship with HIM that is not based on money.
  • GOD wants me to seek HIS power but only to point people to HIM.

Wanting a person healed is a great desire. But when I want others to notice it was “my” prayer that healed the person then I start following Satan’s prideful path. GOD wants to be recognized for everything. HE wants me to guide people back to HIM and know HE accepts me just as I am.

I do not have to buy HIS favor for HE has already done enough for me. I cannot pay enough for what JESUS did for me. GOD wants my heart and my possessions. HE leads me to give directly to those in need but wants me to spread the great news about JESUS more than focus on giving money. I cannot buy GOD’s favor, but I can be thankful that HIS grace is sufficient.

  • Do you feel guilty so you give to a group who are called a church?
  • Can you recognize that the church of JESUS is made up of those who believe in HIM and HIS salvation cannot be purchased?
  • Will you stop trying to buy forgiveness and praise GOD for salvation by telling people about HIS SON versus trying to get people to come to “your” gathering?
