Everyone But You

Everyone But You

Exodos 4: 24 And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the Lord met him and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!” 26 So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood!”—because of the circumcision.

============

After leaving Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, they encountered the preincarnate JESUS. HE was about to kill Moses, whom HE called to bring the people out of Egypt. Zipporah performed a circumcision on Eliezer. JESUS let Moses go.

My Observations:

  • GOD would not allow Moses to go to Egypt unless Gershom and Eliezer were circumcised.
  • GOD told Abram, also known as Abraham, to be circumcised and from then on, every male was to be circumcised on the eight day.
  • GOD would not allow Moses to be HIS leader unless he was serious about following what HE specified.

When everyone else could get away with ignoring what GOD said, Moses could not. When Moses said “yes” to GOD’s calling, he also said “Yes” to following GOD the way HE wanted. There were many men who grew up uncircumcised around Moses, but he had to follow what GOD told Abram to promise.

Zipporah may not have been privy to how serious GOD was about the covenant of circumcision. What seemed insignificant to her was extremely important to GOD. You would think that GOD would have simply told Moses to perform the circumcision like HE told Abram.

He must have circumcised Gershom, but for some reason Eliezer was not. This problem had to be rectified by Zipporah, who may have been against the circumcision. She reluctantly performed the delicate operation and protested. GOD did not harm Moses and it shows that HE is serious about HIS leaders. HE also intervenes.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about this circumcision incident?
  • Has GOD said for you to do something that you may have mislabeled as insignificant?
  • Do you say, “Everyone else can do stuff, why can’t I?” when GOD is trying to make you HIS leader?

Permanent Experience

Permanent Experience

2 Peter 1: 10 So then, my friends, try even harder to make God's call and his choice of you a permanent experience; if you do so, you will never abandon your faith. 11 In this way you will be given the full right to enter the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

============

Not sure that I wanted to be part of the organization, I went to the first meeting with skepticism. I sat through the presentation and they said I would need to meet twice a month, at night and sometimes on weekends. I could not commit the time.

  • I wanted to simply be part of the organization without committing to it.
  • I wanted to use the name of the organization but did not want to do all the work they wanted me to do.
  • I wanted the temporary prestige of the organization without a permanent mindset.

Peter discussed something he failed at. He may have saw people wavering in their faith, so he provided a choice to follow GOD permanently or to stop faking it by being willing to abandon the faith. He denied JESUS and felt embarrassed. After JESUS restored Peter, he was able to preach about JESUS without abandoning his faith.

My Observations:

  • When GOD chose to save me, it was eternal.
  • GOD wants me to value my relationship with HIM and not be willing to leave HIM easily.
  • Roadblocks, obstacles and hurdles will appear in life, BUT GOD wants me to keep my faith focused on HIM.

Many times I felt like giving up. I mean, it seems like trouble comes at inconvenient times when I am not ready. People get sick and hurt, stuff breaks and bank accounts dry up seemingly all at the same time. The first thought is to sin my way out of the trouble, but then I would end up in a worse situation. GOD has another way.

HE wants me to follow the example JESUS set. JESUS did not waver in HIS faith. HE stayed focus on HIS mission to die for the sins of mankind. HE wants me to live my life the same way as HE did. I have a choice to remain faithful to GOD or abandon HIM and follow my own path. I gladly choose GOD over my own choices.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer tell everyone to “try harder?”
  • Have you ever felt like giving up because something did not happen in the time you expected?
  • Have you considered abandoning your faith in GOD because things aren’t going as you expected?
  • Will you consider making your relationship a “permanent experience” by letting go of this particular worry so you can praise GOD today?

Strangers and Refugees

Strangers and Refugees

1 Peter 2: 11 I appeal to you, my friends, as strangers and refugees in this world! Do not give in to bodily passions, which are always at war against the soul. 12 Your conduct among the heathen should be so good that when they accuse you of being evildoers, they will have to recognize your good deeds and so praise God on the Day of his coming.

============

Trying to fit in again, I listened to the crowd. They suggested the type of “fun” I should have by getting people drunk enough to have sex. I thought this was a good idea. My words sounded better when everyone was drunk.

  • I thought I was having “fun.”
  • I felt I was fitting in.
  • I did not know I was damaging the way people viewed me and the way GOD viewed me.

Peter gives a very stern warning to not give in to bodily passions. He then gives a reason, namely reputation. He knew that people would lie and accuse the followers of JESUS of doing evil. One day they will recognize.

My Observations:

  • GOD wants me to enjoy life by following HIS ways.
  • GOD wants me to have an abundant life by seeking what HE wants me to do.
  • GOD wants me to reduce the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life, trading them in for the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness and self-control.

Following GOD has to be intentional. I mean, when I fall to temptation, I do nothing but harm. I harm myself and possibly others. BUT GOD has a remedy. Follow HIS ways. GOD knows I feel guilty when I fall into sin. HE also knows HIS forgiveness is important.

GOD not only forgives me, HE provides a plan that includes a life of actively pursuing people to bring them back to HIM. HE gives me the right words at the right time. I am grateful GOD is willing to guide me.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer sound so serious?
  • Have you ever desired to do something that your heart is telling you “this is wrong?”
  • Will you seek GOD and ask HIM to reveal the awesome plan HE has for you today?

Called Out of Darkness

Called Out of Darkness

1 Peter 2: But you are the chosen race, the King's priests, the holy nation, God's own people, chosen to proclaim the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his own marvelous light. 10 At one time you were not God's people, but now you are his people; at one time you did not know God's mercy, but now you have received his mercy.

============

Desiring to be “on my own”, I pursued “fun” the way others defined it. “Come on, it’s not so bad” was the statement before doing everything I tried. Soon I found myself in trouble because of the “fun” I was having. Everyone who was having “fun” did not provide any help.

  • I did not know how I ended up where I was.
  • I did not know that I was stepping into darkness a little step at a time.
  • I did not know that when trouble hit, those who were in the dark would not help me.

Peter provides a pep talk to those chosen by GOD. HE stated that being called out of darkness is equivalent to being enlightened in the knowledge of JESUS and HIS wonderful acts. He also said the chosen were supposed to proclaim these wonderful acts.

My Observations:

  • GOD chose us to come out of darkness so we can proclaim JESUS as the Savior.
  • GOD chose us to have abundant life while we proclaim JESUS as LORD of the living.
  • GOD chose us to follow HIS ways so others can be saved.

Darkness seems innocent. I mean, when I am asked why I did something people would consider “bad” or “wrong”. My childish response was usually “I don’t know.” This means I was doing things without knowing if there were any consequences to my actions. BUT GOD wanted me enlightened.

HE called me out of ways that seem innocent, yet carry consequences among humans and HIM. HE wanted me to see that I was on the wrong path and gently nudged me back to HIS path, namely following JESUS’s examples. I am glad JESUS called you and me out of darkness.

Challenge

  • What darkness is the writer talking about?
  • Have you ever wanted to do what “everyone else” is doing, yet felt there was something wrong with it?
  • Have you lost your sense of consequence?
  • Will you seek to follow GOD’s ways by learning what they are today?

Thanks for the Appointment

Thanks for the Appointment

1 Timothy 1: 12 I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength for my work. I thank him for considering me worthy and appointing me to serve him, 13 even though in the past I spoke evil of him and persecuted and insulted him. But God was merciful to me because I did not yet have faith and so did not know what I was doing.

============

Standing by the fence, I waited to be left out of the recess activity. One of the team captain’s chose me early, to my surprise. “Why me?” I thought to myself. I had no athletic ability. When it was my turn, the ball was rolled and I kicked it over the pitcher’s head! I made it on base and my team cheered! I didn’t know I had it in me.

  • I doubted “my” ability.
  • I would not have chosen me, so I would not expect anyone else to.
  • I had nothing to offer, or so I thought.

Paul starts praising GOD in the middle of his letter to Timothy. He confessed that he persecuted the church and insulted JESUS by doing so. Yet JESUS, appointed Paul to serve HIM. Paul did not know he had it in him.

My Observations

  • My doubts about myself do not change GOD’s mind about HIS appointment for me.
  • GOD sees me different than I see myself.
  • GOD has a special plan and an appointment made just for me.

“Who me?” Yes you! But what about “this sin” or “that sin?” you mas ask. GOD saw your sin and mine and still appoints us to HIS calling. HE is the one who provides strength to do HIS work through you and me. HE sees flaws and uses each one to grow a strong kingdom.

But there is one thing I must do first, namely confess. I am not worthy of serving the LORD and I have messed up over and over again. But that was before GOD gave me faith that HE has it under control I am HIS and HE is my GOD. I gladly accept HIS appointment for me with full gratitude!.

Challenge

  • What is the writer thanking GOD for?
  • Have you ever doubted your abilities, yet GOD chose you to do something anyway?
  • Will you praise GOD for HIS appointment HE has for you to do a marvelous work in you and through you today?

Praise

Dear LORD, thank YOU for the appointment YOU have on my life and this reader’s life. Thank YOU for YOUR strength, not ours. Thank YOU for considering us worthy for such an important appointment LORD. We honor YOU, in JESUS name . amen

You ARE Special

You ARE Special

2 Thessalonians 1: 13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.

============

Feeling lonely, I sought out people who would be “friendly.” When I found a group, I was always welcome, but something was missing. Each group seemed similar, promoting “unity” and “service” But was there more.

  • I felt there had to be more than being in a group.
  • In some groups, I felt lonelier because something was missing.
  • I noticed some people made the “group” their purpose in life, but there had to be more.

Paul, Silas and Timothy express their gratitude for those who believe in JESUS as the Savior. They explain how GOD has called people for a purpose and set them apart for HIS own. They also urge the people to stay special by learning about JESUS.

My Observations

  • Thankfulness for others stretches beyond any group I can get into.
  • GOD chose me for salvation and set me apart by the SPIRIT and belief in the truth.
  • Glory of our LORD JESUS CHRIST is given to me because GOD chose me.

GOD chose you and that is what makes you special. I mean, groups can make me feel special for a moment, but something will always be missing, namely GOD. I know I have to remain on this earth and live in the world, so GOD doesn’t mind me socializing. But that is not my purpose.

From the time I was born until the time JESUS returns, GOD gives me purpose. HE will examine every word and deed to see if HE is involved. All the things I thought were “special” may not be to HIM. HE will reward me for the things I truly did in HIS name. I am grateful GOD holds onto me even when I let go of HIM.

Challenge

  • What is the calling the writers are speaking about?
  • Have you ever been part of a group yet felt a higher calling?
  • Will you fulfill your purpose by letting go of the world’s solutions and focus on what GOD has called you to do today?

Origin of Hope

Origin of Hope

Galatians 1: 11 Let me tell you, my friends, that the gospel I preach is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any human being, nor did anyone teach it to me. It was Jesus Christ himself who revealed it to me.

============

Watching what people put their hope in was all I could do. I didn’t have enough money to buy the clothes they adorned themselves with or stuff they had, nor was I stronger or more fit than the next. I thought these were important because the rich and famous were studied, remembered and noted in daily conversations.

  • Life seemed hopeless because I did not have what others had.
  • Life seemed unfair because other people had more.
  • Life seemed foggy because I couldn’t see my future getting any “better.”

Luke accounts for GOD’s calling on Paul’s life in the book of Acts. Three he mentions how Paul was blinded and heard the voice of GOD. His calling was supernatural and Paul was dedicated from that day forward to only spreading the Gospel of JESUS.

My Observations

  • GOD calls all humans to serve HIM.
  • GOD wants me and everyone else to exclaim the name of JESUS as the one and only Savior.
  • GOD loves all HIS creations and has a supernatural calling for those who receive HIM.

People may say “yeah, yeah you were called” in a scoffing fashion. If so, then proof is not necessary. GOD’s calling on every human’s life is something that cannot be explained to those who choose not to believe.

JESUS is the one and only true Savior who deserves to be mentioned daily over celebrities and famous people. HIS calling is not to be cheapened by labeling it as “strange” or “stubborn.” The Gospel of JESUS does not originate from humans rather GOD HIMSELF. I am grateful JESUS revealed HIMSELF to me.

Challenge

  • Does the writer seem to be mentioning something strange or unbelievable?
  • Do you remember when you first believed that JESUS was and is the Savior?
  • Will you consider that HE speaks to people daily through HIS word and true followers who test their actions through HIS word and who are guided by the HOLY SPIRIT?
  • Will you place your hope in JESUS today so you will receive an abundant life?

Equally Needed

Equally Needed

2 Corinthians 12: I have to boast, even though it doesn't do any good. But I will now talk about visions and revelations given me by the Lord. I know a certain Christian man who fourteen years ago was snatched up to the highest heaven (I do not know whether this actually happened or whether he had a vision—only God knows). 3-4 I repeat, I know that this man was snatched to Paradise (again, I do not know whether this actually happened or whether it was a vision—only God knows), and there he heard things which cannot be put into words, things that human lips may not speak. So I will boast about this man—but I will not boast about myself, except the things that show how weak I am. If I wanted to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be telling the truth. But I will not boast, because I do not want any of you to have a higher opinion of me than you have as a result of what you have seen me do and heard me say.

============

Eloquent speakers, smart thinkers, strong athletes and talented people seemed to “always” be ahead of me when it came to being chosen. I would raise my hand but receive the words “That’s alright, we have already chosen someone else.” “Am I unwanted?” I would ask GOD.

  • I felt untalented.
  • I felt rejected.
  • I felt unneeded, undesired, and unpleasant.

Paul speaks about his incredible encounter with the LORD. He was sought after by GOD to be a special messenger and was revealed an indescribable vision that catapulted his purpose to the highest level. Even though this uncommon event happened, he did not want anyone to have a higher opinion of him or be jealous of the calling.

My Observations

  • I need to recognize GOD’s calling on my life.
  • I need to look at only my relationship with the LORD and not be jealous of someone else’s.
  • I need to live my life with the purpose GOD gave me and know it is just as important as the next person.

Titles cause me to think of people on different levels. I mean, when someone has a special title in the world’s eyes, I follow the protocol associated with that title. This may require extra attention I would not give to a “common” person. BUT GOD wants me to treat everyone the same.

HE wants me to see that all of us have sinned and fall short of HIS glory. HE then wants me to praise HIM when someone accepts HIS SON as their Savior so he or she can live a life for JESUS. HE wants me to live my life with that same purpose, knowing we are all equally loved by HIM. I am glad GOD loves me just as much as those who are called to do what they do.

Challenge

  • While reading this passage, do you feel lower than the writer?
  • Have you ever compared yourself to the names written in the Bible and felt better or worse?
  • Will you consider not comparing yourself to others and know you are loved, needed and wanted to the highest by GOD today?

You ARE Special

You ARE Special

2 Corinthians 11: I do not think that I am the least bit inferior to those very special so-called “apostles” of yours! Perhaps I am an amateur in speaking, but certainly not in knowledge; we have made this clear to you at all times and in all conditions.

============

Feeling inadequate had become the norm. I was ridiculed for every aspect of my being. From the clothes I wore, to my hair, to the size of my body to the color of my skin, someone had something negative to say. On the other hand, special people who crowds flocked to seemed to have it easy.

  • I did not feel special.
  • I felt quite unwanted.
  • I doubted I could do or say anything right.

Paul focuses in on a mistake the people made when they accepted professional speakers who called themselves “apostles” but were preaching a different spirit. They may have drawn more attention to themselves versus JESUS. These people were eloquent speakers while Paul, on the other hand, had a direct encounter with JESUS. He was called to teach about JESUS.

My Observations

  • JESUS is the only one who is worthy to be pointed to.
  • GOD made me special to reach only a certain group of people HE sends me to or sent to me.
  • GOD wants me to get out of HIS way by placing HIM in the spotlight.

Being special and feeling special seem like two very different things. I mean the world would say a common worker or a person without a home is not special. In fact, these people are often overlooked and even worse, looked down on. But they are special to GOD.

GOD sees those who devalue your abilities and tears down any tactic people make to attempt to make themselves “special” in human’s eyes. GOD made you and me special for HIS purpose. HE adores when HIS name is mentioned over our own. HE was excited when HE made each person and gave each a special gift. I am glad HE loves when I use the gifts HE gave me for HIS purpose.

Challenge

  • What is the writer saying about inferiority?
  • What gifts has GOD given you?
  • Have you ever felt inferior or inadequate?
  • Will you accept JESUS’ power and grace as being sufficient so you can fulfill the special purpose HE has for you today?

The Grace Effect

The Grace Effect

1 Corinthians 15: Last of all he appeared also to me—even though I am like someone whose birth was abnormal. For I am the least of all the apostles—I do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God's church. 10 But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me was not without effect. On the contrary, I have worked harder than any of the other apostles, although it was not really my own doing, but God's grace working with me. 11 So then, whether it came from me or from them, this is what we all preach, and this is what you believe.

============

“I’m saved for eternity!” is the Good News I accepted at an early age. This came with a calling to tell other people about JESUS. But that did not stop me from wanting to sin. I wanted to fit in with everyone else, so I stopped being the “goody, goody” person and tried what “everyone else” was doing. It seemed like my sin would be caught and theirs wouldn’t. In fact, it seemed like I would get singled out and they would go free.

  • I had a misconception of grace.
  • I thought grace meant I was forgiven for my sins and I did not have to have consequence.
  • I was alright with just getting into heaven, so I figured I would live it up here and then I would be in heaven and I could live it up there.

JESUS met Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul was headed to murder more followers of JESUS. HE called Paul into ministry by blinding him. Paul had to suffer to tell people about JESUS. He was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, bitten by a snake and left to die. But GOD’s grace kept him working harder than the other Apostles.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to take my sin seriously.
  • GOD wants a real relationship with me and HE does not like sin.
  • GOD wants me to surrender my life to HIM and to confess my sin to HIM and accept the consequence of my sin.

Being a child of GOD is wonderful, but it ain’t easy. Yes I said “ain’t.” I mean, it seems like other people can act like scoundrels and do as they please while I try to do the right thing and face more suffering. To top it off, when I sin, it seems like GOD comes after me with a stick. Well, at least sometimes.

GOD’s grace extends into this life. The effect of HIS grace wipes away my eternal consequence, but let’s face it… If I did something harmful to another person, GOD will allow the consequence to sprout up from the seeds of sin I planted. Grace is still there, I just have to understand I am at GOD’s mercy which diminishes getting “my” way.

Challenge

  • What new observation about grace do you see in what is written?
  • What do you notice about being humble in this apostle’s words?
  • What misconceptions, if any, do you have about GOD’s grace?
  • Do you think sin can keep you blinded so you will not grow to have a true relationship with JESUS?

Self-Worth

Self-Worth

1 Corinthians 7: 17 Each of you should go on living according to the Lord's gift to you, and as you were when God called you. This is the rule I teach in all the churches. 18 If a circumcised man has accepted God's call, he should not try to remove the marks of circumcision; if an uncircumcised man has accepted God's call, he should not get circumcised. 19 For whether or not a man is circumcised means nothing; what matters is to obey God's commandments. 20 Each of you should remain as you were when you accepted God's call. 21 Were you a slave when God called you? Well, never mind; but if you have a chance to become free, use it. 22 For a slave who has been called by the Lord is the Lord's free person; in the same way a free person who has been called by Christ is his slave. 23 God bought you for a price; so do not become slaves of people. 24 My friends, each of you should remain in fellowship with God in the same condition that you were when you were called.

============

After reaching a certain level, I was kind of proud of “my” accomplishments. But it wasn’t enough. I wanted to be the top in the industry at this particular company. Unfortunately, I ran into others who did not have the same feeling and I found myself searching for a new career. I felt dejected and low. “How am I going to start over?” “Who will value ‘my’ opinion?” I felt ashamed to be unemployed.

  • At one time my self-worth was based on “my” title.
  • At one time I judged others based on “their” title.
  • At one time I valued what humans called “successful” and I placed all my time and effort in becoming what they needed me to become.

Paul explains that GOD has given each human a gift to be used for HIS purpose. GOD calls each human to do a marvelous work for HIM. The war, however, is waged on humanity against using these gifts. Instead, humans withhold resources in exchange for large prices, thus instituting a form of voluntary slavery, meanwhile keeping people from speaking about JESUS daily.

  • GOD wants me to be free to speak about JESUS daily.
  • GOD wants me to add self-control where I used to be free to sin.
  • GOD wants me to place my self-worth in HIM rather than what humans think of me.

Valuing what JESUS did enables me to never become a slave to humans. I am not saying quit your job, rather revisit the value placed on the job. When my total self-worth is on material items and titles, I can quickly become enslaved by these things and worry ensues.

Placing my self-worth in the valuable price JESUS paid grows precious dividends in HIS kingdom. HE freely gives me people HE cherishes and provides food for me to give to HIS sheep. I am grateful I am free to speak about JESUS and I am governed by the self-control HE wants me to have.

  • Do you feel trapped?
  • Do you want to be free?
  • Will you accept the freedom GOD wants you to have while remaining in fellowship with HIM by using your gift for HIM today?

Looking for Grace and Peace

Looking for Grace and Peace

1 Corinthians 1: From Paul, who was called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes—

To the church of God which is in Corinth, to all who are called to be God's holy people, who belong to him in union with Christ Jesus, together with all people everywhere who worship our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

============

Sleep eluded me as I felt the pressures of the pending deadline approaching. Day and night I worked but to no avail. I went to sleep, only to wake up thinking about work. I got up and satisfied the needs of the project. I arrived to work exhausted. I turned in the project, on time. “You misspelled some words” were the only comment.

  • There have been times when I looked for peace after the turmoil.
  • There have been times when I thought I could find peace through accomplishments and money.
  • There have been times when I sought grace for mistakes I made.

Paul seemed to have a special tie to the people of Corinth. He mentioned Sosthenes, a Jewish leader who suffered a beating because he spoke about JESUS and agreed with Paul. Paul knew that those who were called would be ridiculed and persecuted by those who were supposed to be showing the love of GOD. He gives a solution to prepare those who are called.

  • GOD wants me to seek grace by admitting I need a Savior.
  • GOD wants me to seek peace from HIM alone.
  • GOD wants me to confess to the FATHER that JESUS is my Savior so HE can send the HOLY SPIRIT to me, who in turn, brings me grace and peace.

Grace and peace will always elude me when I am not seeking it from the true source. Humans think a larger bank account or a certain brand of material things will bring peace. BUT GOD is the only source of grace and peace. HE withholds these precious implements from those who do not seek HIM.

GOD does something strange. HE pours out grace and peace to those who are called and who are worshipping our LORD JESUS CHRIST. While the world looks on with judgmental wrong labels, GOD gets excited to those who can mention the name of JESUS as their source of grace and peace. I gladly accept GOD’s grace and peace through JESUS who is my Savior.

  • What do you think would bring you peace?
  • Do you think a larger bank account or a better title or another material trinket will bring you peace?
  • Have you taken inventory over your stuff to see if you have received grace and peace yet?
  • Will you stop pursuing grace and peace “your” way and allow GOD to pour them out on you in abundance only when you surrender your life to JESUS today?

Answer the Call

Answer the Call

Romans 8: 28 We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose. 29 Those whom God had already chosen he also set apart to become like his Son, so that the Son would be the first among many believers. 30 And so those whom God set apart, he called; and those he called, he put right with himself, and he shared his glory with them.

============

Avoiding the phone became a normal occurrence. I let the answering machine screen the calls because I did not have any money and could not see getting any money in the near future. Yes, I said answering machine. I would hear the creditors asking for money I did not have. The call would only make me feel worse.

  • Many times I avoided calls because I was afraid of the caller.
  • Many times I avoided calls because I thought I could not do what the caller was asking.
  • Many times I avoided calls because I knew I would have to confess that I owed something, but could not repay.

Paul says something that can be a little hard to understand. He talks about GOD choosing people. The sinful question that tries to negate GOD choosing people is “Why?” Paul does not explain “why”, rather he encourages those who have been chosen by GOD to know the calling has purpose. This purpose brings the good of GOD, so HIS calling is one that gives power.

  • GOD has called me for HIS purpose.
  • GOD has chosen me to become like JESUS.
  • GOD has put me right with HIMSELF so I can do HIS will.

Answering GOD’s call is strange. I mean, HE seems to call at the wrong time, in the wrong way. Just like a creditor calling when I have no money, GOD seems to call when I am not ready or have nothing to give. BUT HIS call needs to be answered.

GOD wants me to be powerless so I can truly point to HIS power. HE gives me purpose and shares HIS glory with me. The purpose is to share the love of JESUS with as many as GOD has given me. I accept GOD’s calling on my life.

  • Is GOD trying to speak to you but you are too busy or worried with life?
  • Does your bills or desires make you not want to hear GOD’s calling?
  • Will you let go of the control you have on your life and allow GOD to give you purpose that is meaningful today?

Called to Belong

Called to Belong

Romans 1: From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus and an apostle chosen and called by God to preach his Good News.

The Good News was promised long ago by God through his prophets, as written in the Holy Scriptures. It is about his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: as to his humanity, he was born a descendant of David; as to his divine holiness, he was shown with great power to be the Son of God by being raised from death. Through him God gave me the privilege of being an apostle for the sake of Christ, in order to lead people of all nations to believe and obey. This also includes you who are in Rome, whom God has called to belong to Jesus Christ.

============

Feeling out of place became the norm. Everywhere I went, I felt alone, even in the middle of a crowd. One day I sat in my apartment, grousing about my situation. “Why am I here in this place?” I cried out. “Where are the good parties and clubs? I don’t belong here!” Little did I know, it was the perfect place to get off a destructive path I could not see.

  • Looking back, there were situations I went through that grew my patience.
  • Looking back, there were situations I went through to change my path.
  • Looking back, there were situations I went through that seemed painful, but opened my eyes to GOD.

Paul begins his letter to the Romans with a salutation that recognizes his purpose in life, namely to preach the Good News of JESUS. He spent his life trying to do what was right in his own eyes, but GOD arranged situations to blind him to what was wrong and open his eyes to JESUS. Paul now had a purpose that made sense.

  • GOD wants me to preach the GOD News about JESUS being raised from the dead.
  • GOD wants me to understand and “live” what the scriptures say about JESUS.
  • GOD wants me to be grateful enough for what JESUS did for me to lead people of all nations to believe and obey.

Before I knew it, I belonged. I no longer felt lonely in crowds because I saw a need versus being needy. The crowd was searching and GOD called me to point them to HIM. HE opened my eyes to the fact that HIS family is huge and full of love. I am grateful to belong to JESUS CHRIST.

  • Are you lonely?
  • Does it seem like your life’s purpose is your school, job, family or friends?
  • Will you ask GOD to give you HIS purpose of telling those around you about being saved eternally by JESUS today?

Recruited

Recruited

Acts 26: 12 “On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. 13 About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. 14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

15 “Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’

“ ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. 16 ‘Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. 17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them 18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

============

“We heard about you” were the strange words from the person on the phone. “How would you like to work for another company?” I wasn’t looking for a job at the time, but the recruiter presented the opportunity so well that I had to investigate.

  • There have been times when I have been recruited.
  • There have been times when I have been sought after.
  • There have been times when I was not looking for something, yet the something found me.

Paul continued explaining his background to King Agrippa. He mention how JESUS stopped him from going to Damascus to kill more people who truly followed GOD. JESUS told Paul that HE was “Appointing him as a servant.” JESUS sought after Paul.

  • GOD wants me to be HIS servant.
  • GOD pursued me when I was not looking for HIM.
  • GOD opened my eyes and turned me from darkness to light.

Belief that I live in darkness is hard to do when there is artificial light. I mean, when things are semi-good, it is hard to see that I need help. BUT GOD sees something different. HE sees the total darkness the world is in.

GOD recruits people to see JESUS as the Savior of the world. HE opens their eyes to the false light Satan provides. GOD wants all to be saved, but knows some will choose not to believe in JESUS. I gladly accept GOD’s recruitment to tell people about eternal salvation through JESUS.

  • Are you living so comfortably that you think you do not need JESUS?
  • Do you believe in the world’s philosophies more than the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT?
  • Will you allow GOD to recruit you into telling people about how JESUS died for your sins and is now alive, forgiving you for all eternity?

Called to Action

Acts 13: So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. And when they arrived in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They also had John as their assistant.

============

“Unload the truck” was the statement from our supervisor. It was a hot summer day on the temporary job. “You want to play a game to pass the time?” a coworker asked me. “Sure” I replied. We goofed off for a long while.

The supervisor came back and saw practically nothing was done. “Get this done!” he exclaimed. Looking back, I did not know the company was being charged fees for taking too long to unload.

  • There was a time when I did not take my calling seriously.
  • There was a time when I looked at my calling as a distraction.
  • There was a time when I went in other directions from my calling.

Barnabas and Saul were sent by the HOLY SPIRIT to do a great work for HIM. They sailed to the place they were sent. The moment they arrived, they preached the word of GOD. They wasted no time.

  • GOD wants me to obey HIS calling immediately.
  • GOD wants me to get rid of my complaints about HIS calling and respond with action.
  • GOD wants me to see not doing HIS calling as something to fear.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. When GOD calls me to do something, HE wants immediacy. HE is patient though. HE knew I would walk away from HIS calling or half do it from time to time. HE grows me up to see the importance of HIS calling so I will take it seriously and not complain. I am grateful GOD rewards me when obey HIM.

  • Are you half-serving GOD?
  • Do you place the world’s situations over GOD’s calling?
  • Will you answer GOD’s calling on your life with immediacy and priority today?

Needing Help

John 15: 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

============

Sitting alone in my apartment was driving me crazy. I did not know many people in the town where I worked and was forced to commune with co-workers. I applied for a few positions away from that place, but found nothing. I felt doomed to stay there “forever.” I started my life over. I was no longer going to be the chief of parties. I wanted to learn about GOD.

  • At one point, something changed inside me.
  • At one point, I desired to follow GOD.
  • At one point, my worries, fears, doubts and complaints were put aside for a new outlook on life.

JESUS gives HIS followers something to look for. HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT, who is the HELPER. JESUS also gave HIS followers purpose, namely to bear witness of HIM being our Savior.

  • The HELPER will gives me words to comfort others.
  • The HELPER fills me up with joy.
  • The HELPER changes my mind from worry to victory.

Feeling all alone is sometimes overwhelming. I mean at every turn, there seemed to be a problem that I could not fix. BUT GOD wanted me to look to HIM for all of my answers. Instead of thinking “I” had to solve everything by “myself”, GOD sent me the HELPER.

When I couple myself to GOD, through the HOLY SPIRIT, I am filled with joy that makes no sense. I can then serve others and speak about JESUS in word and action. I always need help and I am grateful for the HOLY SPIRIT who lives inside me.

  • Are you alone?
  • Do you feel worthless?
  • Will you accept your calling and allow GOD to speak to many people through you?
  • Will you also stop thinking you are broken and let the perfect HOLY SPIRIT reside in you today?

Hated

John 15: 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

============

After the sermon, I felt it was time to give up drinking as a vow to the LORD. This came with a price. I went back to visit my “friends” and they wanted me to drink with them. “I’ll pass” I said. They kept pressing the issue and asked many questions. I wasn’t really a drinker anyway, but to stop all together seemed odd to them. They stopped inviting me.

  • When I stood ground because of my promise to the LORD, people looked at me strange.
  • When I started doing things strictly for the LORD, people stepped away from me.
  • When I stopped doing what the popular people were doing, I was no longer popular.

JESUS warns HIS followers that the world will hate them because of their love for HIM. HE then tell HIS disciples that HE chose them to be different than the world.

  • JESUS wants me to show love when hatred is shown to me.
  • JESUS wants me to be a servant when others want to be the boss.
  • JESUS wants me to seek the poor rather than running after the rich and powerful.

It really is not popular to follow JESUS. The world labels the lifestyle as “dull” and “boring.” BUT GOD loves when I follow HIS example. HE gets excited when I mention JESUS as the creator to the “smart” people who believe the world created itself. HE rewards me when I talk about heaven as my home to those who focus all their attention on temporary mansions.

JESUS was hated because HE loved the world. HE died for the world and the world still did not believe in HIM. Every job that believes they have the answer to problems could be a distraction from JESUS. The world hates not getting credit for answers, so they do not praise GOD. I praise GOD for all HE has blessed me with.

  • Do you follow humans more than you follow GOD?
  • Do you believe in human wisdom without giving GOD any credit?
  • Will you drop your fear of being looked at strangely by the world and spread GOD’s message by words first, then example?

Ready and Willing

Luke 19: 28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” say, “The Lord needs it.”’

32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?’

34 They replied, ‘The Lord needs it.’

35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

============

“Can I borrow your van” was the question. “No, it is leased” was my answer, trying to avoid more expensive mileage. “Can I borrow your van” was the question from another person. “No, it needs brakes and tires” was my answer. Both were true at that time.

  • There were times when I held back.
  • There were times when I put something to the side for myself.
  • There were times when I could have given but was afraid to.

The owners of the donkey may have been preserving it for something special or they may have thought the donkey wasn’t ready. But when JESUS requested the donkey through HIS disciples, they let it go, not knowing when or if they would get it back.

  • GOD wants me to be generous.
  • GOD wants me to let stuff go.
  • GOD wants me to see that people are more special than my stuff.

It never will be a convenient time for someone to borrow something or need something. In fact, the needs seem to come when I have the least amount to give. BUT GOD seems to enjoy stretching me in this area. Maybe it is because I am holding onto things a little too tight in the first place.

GOD wants me to be generous with everything. While it is a long journey to truly being generous, I can start small and work my way up. GOD is generous to me.

  • Are you holding onto stuff that someone else can use?
  • Is GOD calling you to give to someone who needs your last dollar?
  • Will you allow GOD to use your possessions today to grow HIS kingdom?
