Heart Repair

Heart Repair

Philippians 1: From Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus—

To all God's people in Philippi who are in union with Christ Jesus, including the church leaders and helpers:

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

============

Just getting a job was my heart’s desire at one point. But after a period of working, it was not enough. I needed to move up in the company. The pay, while good at one point, was now not enough. The work seemed repetitive and the people wore me down. “Why do they always listen to that guy?” was my complaint.

  • I was discontent
  • I wanted more.
  • I lost my thankfulness.

Paul and Timothy send greetings to everyone through a letter to the Philippians. The title they gave themselves was that of a “servant.”  Their desire was to bless everyone with grace and peace that only came from GOD.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to trade in my need to be on top to that of being on the bottom.
  • GOD wants me to desire more for others than myself.
  • GOD wants me to value being a servant more than being served.

Serving people is GOD’s highest honor. I mean, when I serve someone, the hole in my heart gets filled. Unfortunately, when I am serving people for my own personal gain, then it can wear on me, causing me to be discontent. I long for something else “better” than the role I am playing at the moment.

BUT GOD has a remedy. HE makes me a servant wherever I am. HE guides my mindset to giving others the best, knowing I am adding to a huge “reward” account HE is storing up for me. HE changes my view of something negative into seeing that I  am serving others because HE wants me to. I am glad GOD guides me to those HE wants me to serve.

Challenge

  • What stands out to you in this opening greeting from the writers?
  • Have you ever felt discontent even when your prayers have been answered?
  • Will you receive GOD’s grace and peace today by taking a deep breath and serving others without expectations so HE will fill your heart with overflowing thanksgiving?

Hard Work

Acts 20: 32 “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. 35 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

============

After staying up all night many nights, I finally finished parts of the project that were difficult to complete. The hard work was done. When the project debuted, it was a huge success. Everyone at the convention came to see the shiny new thing. But when approached to feed the homeless I said, “I’m too busy.”

  • There were many times when I was willing to work hard for money.
  • There were many times when I was willing to receive accolades for projects to make others rich.
  • There were many times when I was willing to exhaust myself over pleasing the very wealthy.

Paul was about to reach the conclusion of his plea to the leaders who came to visit him. He committed them to GOD and then told them about his views on serving and money. He let them know he did not desire their money or clothes rather he wanted to serve the weak by hard work.

  • GOD wants me to remember the poor and those who are weak.
  • GOD wants me to seek those who have fallen on hard times.
  • GOD wants me to work hard so I can give to those who are in need.

Remembering those who are in need takes work. I mean, it is easy to work hard for the rich to become rich. BUT GOD wants me to remember why I work hard. HE wants me to remember those who are in need and will remain in need. HE wants me to see people with compassion versus being a problem. I am grateful GOD chose me to be a laborer for HIM.

  • Are you working hard?
  • Do you come home exhausted, never once thinking of someone in need?
  • Will you reserve a small amount of time to think of at least one person who needs something from you today so GOD can be shown through your actions?

Needs of the Many

Luke 2: 33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

============

“Will you be able to fire a third of our department?” was the question in the interview. “No” was my answer. At one point my ruthless heart would do anything for “the company” but I realized something… these were people.

  • One day I woke up and realized there were people around me.
  • One day I woke up and saw many people around me that I could serve.
  • One day I woke up and understood that I have been put here with a much higher purpose.

Simeon’s final declaration was that JESUS would be the cause of many to fall and many to rise. HE would be the ONE who would reveal the true hearts of humans. How cool is that? Not so cool, because the revelation would be through blindness, pain and death. JESUS needed to do something.

  • JESUS has my situation already determined.
  • JESUS has my circumstance already taken care of.
  • JESUS has my life already planned out and HE has declared victory over eternal death for me.

I have a choice to look at JESUS as my savior. By belief in HIS action, I can be part of the “Rise of many.” HIS power, mercy and grace enables me to have life so when my wicked heart is revealed, it will not be as painful because I acknowledge the need for GOD in my life.

  • Are you living your life for “the company?”
  • Do you think your project is more important than those GOD has placed around you?
  • Can you open your eyes and seek HIS face today so HE can show you your purpose?

Servant’s Choice

Matthew 24: 45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Balling up paper was fun. We gathered enough to have about twenty a piece for our game. An empty trash can was our basket. Shot after shot increased our skills. We even adjusted for the wind.

“What are you two doing?” was the question from our boss. “Unloading the truck” we replied. I guess I will not be put in charge of much here.

  • I have goofed off at work.
  • I have fallen asleep at work.
  • I have played games, held phone calls and went out on extended lunches at work.

Dead end job was the label I put on the position and I did not value the position at all. I went from job to job with that same attitude. BUT GOD wanted more.

  • GOD wants me to serve HIM on every job I work.
  • GOD wants me to understand HE sees me and that should be enough to keep me from goofing off.
  • GOD wants me to do in private what I do in public.

The servant who thinks JESUS is never going to return is quite mistaken. HIS return is imminent. In fact, for some, this may be their very last day on this earth. HE suggests that I have a choice, be caught serving or be caught goofing off, mistreating people. JESUS wants me to serve people while I still have the chance.

  • Are you goofing off when you could be serving someone for GOD?
  • Do you think work is more important than serving someone for GOD at work?
  • Can you do your work as if you were doing it for GOD?
  • Will you serve someone or pray for someone today?
