Seventh Commandment – No Adultery

Seventh Commandment – No Adultery

Exodus 20:  14 “You shall not commit adultery.

============

GOD provided the seventh commandment to Moses and the children of Israel. This time HIS focus was on relationships.

My Observations:

  • GOD was protecting the lineage of JESUS, keeping it pure and traceable.
  • GOD symbolically wanted a relationship with people who wanted HIM and HIM alone.
  • GOD was addressing their polytheistic mindset through the symbolism of marriage.

To keep the lineage of JESUS pure and traceable, GOD needed the children of Israel to remain married. They had been under the influence of Egypt for hundreds of years. Their mindset was that any god will do. This mindset would spill into their relationships. Any woman or man will do, was not enough for GOD.

In this commandment, GOD shows HIS commitment that HE would keep HIS promise. “I will never leave you or forsake you.” When humans look at this commandment from a human perspective, they fail miserably by boiling the statement down to sex versus choice.

GOD was establishing a lineage that would eventually lead to the birth of CHRIST. Both people needed to follow GOD versus the ways of the people of Canaan. Zipporah had a strange encounter with GOD, who was about to execute Moses if his son was not circumcised.

We are not given the context, but I believe Zipporah had to accept the command of circumcision without fighting it as she may have done. GOD wanted harmony between HIM, Adam and Eve. But due to the fall of humans, pain and rules needed to be put in place.

I believe the commitment to GOD is what HE is speaking about. I carefully paraphrase this passage by saying, “Children of Israel, choose a mate who will follow ME so that JESUS will come through your people and save all humans from their sins.”

It was not about effectiveness. The woman that JESUS spoke to at the well had many “husbands,” yet her testimony saved an entire town. David, the most famous adulterer, was a man after GOD’s heart. Not because of adultery, but because of his relationship with GOD.

JESUS said there is no need for marriage in heaven because HE is the GOD of the living. Humans look at themselves when reading this commandment versus looking at GOD. Their choice of a mate needed to point to the arrival of JESUS.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about HIS commandment to not have adultery?
  • Have you ever considered leaving GOD and HIS ways, to pursue what?
  • GOD said HE would never leave you nor forsake you, so are you willing to stay with GOD no matter what you have done?

True Leaders Forgive

True Leaders Forgive

Genesis 50: 15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.” 16 So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, 17 ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 Then his brothers also went and fell down before his face, and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

19 Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. 21 Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

============

Joseph’s brothers hated him and his relationship with their father. Now that Jacob was dead, they figured Joseph’s wrath would finally come out. They sent a messenger to ask for their forgiveness. Then they went to see him and bowed before him and asked for forgiveness.

My Observations:

  • Joseph’s brothers wanted to harm him, but this evil was seen by GOD and used to raise him up.
  • Joseph’s brothers were erratic, so they sent a messenger to ask for forgiveness, but felt the need to show up in person.
  • Joseph acknowledged their evil and showed mercy, because he could have had them put to death and no one would have blinked by doing so.

True leaders hear from GOD and forgive. I believe this entire slice of history is placed in the Bible by GOD to show us that forgiveness is available for us to use any time. False leaders bully people and hide their evil. BUT GOD sees their evil and will repay.

Vengeance is owned by GOD. HE will repay. But HE also sees the heart of the forgiver. Joseph’s name is forever known as a leader who GOD raised up to be an example of forgiveness.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD told Moses about Joseph’s forgiveness?
  • Are you in need of forgiveness and have not spoken to people in a while, or have you not forgiven someone and are avoiding them?
  • Do you see how important forgiveness is to GOD and is there someone you need to forgive or ask for forgiveness?

A Chance to Reconcile

A Chance to Reconcile

Genesis 27: Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau his older son and said to him, “My son.”

And he answered him, “Here I am.”

Then he said, “Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death. Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me. And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”

============

Years and years after moving back to the place where Abraham bought, Isaac watched Esau grow up. He was getting old and could not see well. He called to Esau and gave him his request.

My Observations:

  • Isaac could have blessed Esau right on the spot, but he gave him something to do.
  • Isaac must have known that Esau gave away his birthright for a meal, so he gave him the opportunity to make it right.
  • Isaac was willing to reinstate the blessing if Esau put in the effort.

Esau saddened Isaac and Rebekah by marrying the Hittite women. These women may have lived in the “care-less” culture, doing and saying as they please. They may not have followed what GOD wanted. Esau had great hunting skills, but may have left the cooking to everyone else.

Isaac requested that “he” make the food this time and was prepared to make everything right again by blessing him. This could be Esau’s chance to fix what he had broken.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD tells Moses about the conversation between Isaac and Esau?
  • Have you ever thought you messed up with GOD and was given the opportunity to reconcile?
  • Can you take a moment and ask GOD to reconcile with you, so HE can forgive and cleanse you to do HIS next assignment for you?

Knowing How to Ask

Knowing How to Ask

1 John 5: 13 I am writing this to you so that you may know that you have eternal life—you that believe in the Son of God. 14 We have courage in God's presence, because we are sure that he hears us if we ask him for anything that is according to his will. 15 He hears us whenever we ask him; and since we know this is true, we know also that he gives us what we ask from him.

============

“Can I go outside?” was my innocent question “No, it’s about to rain” was the decline. “Can I use the car?” “No, you don’t have your driver’s license yet.” “Can I have time off?” was the question I asked my boss later in life. “No, the company is in a state of emergency and we need everyone.” “Why does ‘everybody’ tell me NO!?

  • I was tired of hearing NO for an answer.
  • I was tired of not getting “my” way.
  • I was tired of having to ask for stuff!

John addressed those who had needs. He first provided comfort to those who believe in JESUS as the Savior, by telling them they have eternal life. But what about life on earth? He addressed that to by saying “HE hears us if we ask HIM for anything that is according to HIS will.”

My Observations:

  • GOD is sovereign and has the right to hear all of my requests and can say “Yes”, “No” or “Not Right Now.”
  • GOD wants to help me be part of HIS plan.
  • My requests work best when they align with GOD’s will.

Asking GOD for anything does not mean I will get everything. I mean, if I were to ask for something sinful, HE will say “No.” He will then guide me to grow up and ask HIM “What do YOU want?”

GOD gets excited when I try to align with HIS will. HE sees my efforts to do what pleases HIM, namely seeking the lost and serving my neighbors. HE cam to seek and to serve, so should I. I am glad GOD hears and answers my prayers with a “Yes” when I align to HIS good and perfect will.

Challenge:

  • Why does the writer mention courage?
  • Have you ever wanted something that you knew was not good for you?
  • Will you align your request to GOD’s will and seek what HE wants today?

Who put you in charge?

Who put you in charge?

1 Corinthians 4: You should think of us as Christ's servants, who have been put in charge of God's secret truths. The one thing required of such servants is that they be faithful to their master. Now, I am not at all concerned about being judged by you or by any human standard; I don't even pass judgment on myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not prove that I am really innocent. The Lord is the one who passes judgment on me. So you should not pass judgment on anyone before the right time comes. Final judgment must wait until the Lord comes; he will bring to light the dark secrets and expose the hidden purposes of people's minds. And then all will receive from God the praise they deserve.

============

After I realized I was not living as I should, I started reading the Bible more and learning what it had to say. When I found a truth that I should live, I immediately told others. But one day someone said “Who put you in charge?” My approach was pretty harsh.

  • There have been times when I had the best intentions but my delivery was not the best.
  • There have been times when I wanted to help, but the way I helped seemed harsh.
  • There have been times when I thought I was serving when in reality I was judging.

Paul explains that anyone who speaks about JESUS, needs to be faithful. Judging someone else’s intentions is not the main goal and should be left to JESUS.

  • GOD wants me to be faithful to follow JESUS.
  • GOD wants me to be careful not to judge.
  • GOD wants me to keep my conscience clear, but know I am a sinner who need to be forgiven.

When GOD made me, HE wanted me to speak highly of JESUS. I believe everyone is made to do the same. But some will not. GOD chose to use humans to spread HIS Good News of JESUS being our Savior.

I can say this with a clear conscience, knowing all my actions will be judged. Some will be burned up and some will stay. I am glad GOD enables me to be dependable enough to speak HIS name.

  • Do you feel like falling away from CHRIST?
  • Are you judging someone today?
  • Will you remain faithful to GOD and follow HIS ways and drop any judgement you may have of others today?

From Praise to Hope

 From Praise to Hope

Romans 15: Accept one another, then, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you. For I tell you that Christ's life of service was on behalf of the Jews, to show that God is faithful, to make his promises to their ancestors come true, and to enable even the Gentiles to praise God for his mercy. As the scripture says,

“And so I will praise you among the Gentiles;
    I will sing praises to you.”
10 Again it says,
“Rejoice, Gentiles, with God's people!”
11 And again,
“Praise the Lord, all Gentiles;
    praise him, all peoples!”
12 And again, Isaiah says,
“A descendant of Jesse will appear;
    he will come to rule the Gentiles,
    and they will put their hope in him.”

13 May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit.

============

“Let’s go on a bike hike” someone older said to us. Having only been out of the neighborhood a few times, I was excited to go on this adventure. We rode further than I had ever ridden in my life. We crossed the railroad tracks and the neighborhood looked different.

When we arrived at a park, the people called us by names of racial hatred. We were chased. I didn’t know much about prayer, but I started saying “Our FATHER…”

  • There have been times when I just wanted to live together.
  • There have been times when I just wanted to enjoy life together.
  • There have been times when I just wanted to have peace, but could not find it because I was not accepted.

Paul’s plea was primarily to the Jews, but was universal in nature. He expressed something that is hard for humans, namely “accept one another.” But how? He then explains why do it. “For the glory of GOD, as CHRIST has accepted you.”

  • GOD wants to show me that HE is faithful to make HIS promises come true.
  • GOD wants to enable me to praise HIM for HIS mercy.
  • GOD wants to be the source of my hope.

Praising GOD for HIS mercy is only the beginning of the relationship. I mean, when I confess I am in need of a Savior, JESUS accepts me, because HIS resurrection to life gave HIM all authority. Now that HE has accepted me, HE wants me to accept others, even those who do not look or act like me.

GOD then wants me to grow beyond confession. HE wants to fill me with joy and peace. But there is one caveat. I must place my faith in HIM. But what if my faith is small and wavering? HE has that covered by placing the HOLY SPIRIT in me. Now my “hope” will continue to grow and I can accept others as CHRIST accepted me.

  • Is your hope small because you feel oppressed?
  • Do you think there is no way out because of another group?
  • Will you add “acceptance” to your heart and believe in JESUS so HE will provide the HOLY SPIRIT, who will grow you with HIS power today?

You are Covered

You are Covered

Romans 4: David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those
    whose transgressions are forgiven,
    whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the one
    whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”

============

As I ordered my burger, I could not wait to eat. It was lunchtime and this was a departure from the normal bologna sandwich I would carry around in a paper bag. When the burger was cooked, he asked for payment. To my dismay, I left the money at home I was supposed to put in my wallet. “That’s okay, you are covered.” He graciously said to me. Bring it in tomorrow. I was relieved.

  • Many people have been gracious to me.
  • Many people have done thing for me who I am indebted to.
  • Many people have not counted my debt against me.

Paul reflects on David’s words in one of the Psalms. David mentions that GOD credits righteousness apart from works. Paul mentions that GOD knows the sins of the one who believes in HIS grace, but does not hold that sin against that person.

  • GOD wants me to believe that my sins have been forgiven by JESUS.
  • GOD wants me to be excited that there is nothing more that needs to be done for my salvation.
  • GOD wants me to be secure in my relationship with HIM.

Knowing I am “covered” means I do not owe GOD anything. I do not owe GOD money, time or treasure. With this realization, I owe HIM everything. I mean, it is really exciting to have a relationship with some as generous as GOD. HE looked at my debt and died for it. What more could HE do?

HE wiped away all my debt and nothing more is owed. I am so thankful, that I feel I have to give HIM something. What do I give to the being who owns everything? I give myself, thankfully.

  • Are you so distracted with the world’s debts that you overlook the debt you owe to GOD?
  • Do you think your efforts to stop doing some sins, earns you some righteous points?
  • Will you simply believe that JESUS paid it all and all to HIM you owe today?

Ask for Patience

Ask for Patience

Acts 26: Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.”

So Paul motioned with his hand and began his defense: “King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews, and especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.

============

When the deadline approached, I was nowhere near complete. I had underestimated the school work because I had a job. I had to go to the professor and ask for an extension. It was a humbling experience.

  • There have been many times when I needed grace.
  • There have been many times when I needed mercy.
  • There have been many times when I needed someone to be patient with me.

Paul was speaking before king Agrippa and a huge crowd. He acknowledged the king’s knowledge of Jewish customs and controversies. Paul then asked for the king to have patience because he knew his story would be long.

  • GOD wants me to be humble enough to ask for patience.
  • GOD wants me to recognize when I need help.
  • GOD wants me to understand that I am at the mercy of others, so I need patience.

Asking for patience from someone is humbling. I mean, what if they say no? Asking for patience takes courage. When I need patience from someone, it usually means the person is in a position to enforce consequence on me or not help me when I need help.

GOD wants me to recognize the need for me to ask HIM to have patience with me. Even though HE is slow to anger, I still need to ask HIM to stay with me when I mess up. I am grateful HE will never leave me nor forsake me. GOD is patient with me.

  • Did you mess up with someone?
  • Do you need their mercy?
  • Will you humble yourself by confessing to GOD and ask for patience today?

Tiny Living Space

Acts 7: 44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern that he had seen, 45 which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David, 46 who found favor before God and asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob. 47 But Solomon built Him a house.

48 “However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:

49 ‘Heaven is My throne,
And earth is My footstool.
What house will you build for Me? says the Lord,
Or what is the place of My rest?

50 Has My hand not made all these things?’

============

Moving out of the bunk bed room into the dorm seemed incredible. I mean there was so much space! Two beds and two desks could fit into the room comfortably. And I had my own closet. Years later I returned to the dorm room and thought “How did I ever fit in that tiny room?”

There were some places I lived in that seemed small.
There have been some places I lived in that only a few people could fit.
There were some places I lived in that could only fit me and my stuff.

Stephen continues explaining the Israelite history. He talked about the tents in the wilderness and then spoke of David’s desire to build a house for GOD since GOD had done so much for him. But Solomon was the one who build a temple for GOD, even though GOD could not be confined only to a place made by humans.

JESUS sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live in my heart when I believed in the need for salvation.
JESUS placed the COMFORTER in my heart to help me through difficult times.
JESUS offered the SPIRIT of counsel, truth and wisdom to help me make decisions.

Accepting JESUS as my Savior enabled GOD to live inside of me through the HOLY SPIRIT. HE dwells in me and I in HIM. But when my heart is small and I think only of myself, the living space is really cramped for the HOLY SPIRIT.

GOD wants to stretch HIS living space by having me think of others. Serving others for the sake of GOD stretches my heart, making it bigger and bigger. Soon, many people can fit inside so I can pray for them, even when they wrong me. I am grateful GOD chose to live in me and hope I can give HIM more living space each day.

Do you think about yourself or your entertainment or your health a lot?
Are you concerned about you and a few other people?
Will you allow GOD to stretch your heart so you will desire more people to have a saving relationship with JESUS?

Honorable Mention

John 14: 12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

============

“LORD help me pass this test” I said quickly. “Oh, I forgot, in JESUS name” I added. Days later I received my failing grade. “LORD, please pay this stack of bills” I said frustrated. “Oh, yes, in JESUS name” I grunted. I got final notices that they were going to shut off my utilities if I did not pay. I gave HIM an honorable mention.

  • When I get nervous, I simply want a quick way out of the problem.
  • When I get in trouble, I simply want the fastest way out of the trouble.
  • When I get frustrated, I simply want relief from my frustrations.

JESUS says some very profound words when HE tells the disciples they will do greater works than HE did. HE then goes on to say, “If you ask for anything ‘IN MY NAME’, I will do it. But why doesn’t this always work?

  • JESUS wants me to ask for the things HE stands for.
  • JESUS wants me to desire what HE desires.
  • JESUS wants me to bring HIS lost sheep back to HIM.

Asking a florist to fix my car will yield the same answer, namely “I cannot do that.” No matter how many times I ask, it would be out of character for the florist to do something that is outside of their “name.” GOD will not do something that is out of HIS will.

JESUS wants me to understand HIS desires, so when I ask, HE will give it to me in abundance. If someone is sick, it is not just about healing, it is about people giving their life back to GOD.

HE wants people to see HIS healing power, but only for the purpose of them, or those around them, to be excited enough to go out and tell others about HIM. I ask JESUS for the salvation of those HE has placed around me so they will be HIS disciples to reach others.

  • What do you think you need?
  • Is what you need part of GOD’s desire to bring mankind back to HIM?
  • Will you seek first what GOD desires, so HE will bless your requests abundantly?

Alarm Clock

John 12: 37 But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:
“Lord, who has believed our report?

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:

40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
Lest they should see with their eyes,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”

41 These things Isaiah said [f]when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

============

After placing my child in the baby carrier, I performed my daily ritual. I loaded important papers and other work items in the back seat. I got in the car and started to drive off. When I looked in the back seat, I noticed the baby was not there. I got out of the car and went into the house. There was my child, sitting in the carrier, smiling. Oh, and I noticed my coffee was sitting on top of the car.

  • There have been times when I was distracted.
  • There have been times when I had so much on my mind that all I could do was concentrate on what was causing stress.
  • There have been times when I was awake, but could not remember how so much time had passed.

JESUS had healed blind people, cured people of extreme diseases, and raised people from the dead. This was the beginning of a list that is too long to write. Unfortunately, the longer the list, the more the people would not believe in HIM. They were distracted by their desires and could not “see” or “hear” HIM.

  • GOD wants me to wake up and see what HE made me for.
  • GOD wants me to open my eyes to those around me who need HIM.
  • GOD wants me to understand in my heart what HE wants me to do.

 “HE has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts” are the words that scare me most. I mean, if I want something that GOD does not want me to have, HE may give it to me, in abundance. HE will then blind me to think “I” did this. HE will also harden my heart to think HE does not exist or HE no longer heals.

GOD wants my full attention. HE wants me to believe in HIS healing, saving power. HE can do whatever HE wants, whenever HE wants. Fortunately, HE wants to do things with love in HIS heart. I am glad HE pursues me.

  • Are you distracted away from GOD’s power?
  • Are you just going through the motions, not knowing why so much time has passed?
  • Will you wake up and see GOD in your life so you can understand with your heart how much HE loves you today?

Inconveniently Ready

Luke 11: And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

============

“Can you take me to the emergency?” I asked. It was the middle of the night and I had no one to turn to but a coworker. I explained the problem and he got out of bed and took me.

  • There were times when I inconvenienced people.
  • There were times when I was in need at an inconvenient time.
  • There were times when I was at the mercy of others and I did not want to ask for help, but needed it.

JESUS was actually speaking of persistence in HIS example, but HE did it in a way that also showed the need for persistence and humility. The “friend” in HIS illustration, was not ashamed to ask for help, even at an inconvenient time.

  • GOD wants me to respond to helping others even if it is inconvenient.
  • GOD wants me to swallow my pride and express my needs even when it is “inconvenient.”
  • GOD wants me to seek HIM with persistence.

GOD has the right to say “No” to many things I ask for, but I ask anyway. In fact, GOD does not mind if I ask over and over and over again. HE can handle my request and, in the meantime, I grow spiritually because I have faith that HE will deliver in HIS time.

  • Are you in need and are afraid to ask for help because it is inconvenient?
  • Do you have someone you need to help but it is not at a convenient time?
  • Will you grow your faith by continuing to ask GOD for HIS favor, even if it means asking for the same thing over and over again?

Powerful Mercy

Mark 5: Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”

For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” Then He asked him, “What is your name?”

And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.

============

Driving on a sunny day made me feel great. I was on my way to a friend’s house to enjoy some company. As I drove through the intersection near his house, a car ran a stop sign and hit my old junker. With little apology they threatened me instead of providing their insurance. I wanted them arrested for the rest of their lives!

  • Sometimes I want revenge!
  • Sometimes I want “justice!”
  • Sometimes I want “that” person to get what’s coming to them!

JESUS does something absolutely amazing in this slice of history. A legion of demons, whose job was to torment people, asked for mercy.  JESUS had the power to immediately speak them into being eternally tormented but restrained for it was not the right time.

  • JESUS says to me “Vengeance is MINE.”
  • JESUS says to me “I AM full of mercy and grace.”
  • JESUS says to me “Judge not lest you be judged.”

This conversation between the demons and JESUS shows me that HE can give mercy to anyone who asks. I need to follow HIS example of giving mercy to those who may be against me.

  • Did someone do something to you?
  • Did they deliberately hurt you?
  • Can you accept the power GOD is giving you by showing undeserved mercy on them?

Sorrow Gate

Matthew 26: 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

============

Deeply troubled about many things, I could not rest. I woke up in the middle of the night with my mind racing over all the things that were going on. Maybe if I work, then I can get my mind off of stuff. I could not work because of all the thoughts.

  • Sometimes I get worried.
  • Sometimes I get troubled.
  • Sometimes I am so full of sorrow, I cannot even think.

As JESUS approached HIS death HE was sorrowful and troubled. Only HE and the FATHER knew what it meant to be blamed for every sin of mankind and JESUS was going to do just that. HE faced deep sorrow but did something amazing.

  • JESUS showed me how to pray in the middle of my sorrow.
  • JESUS showed me how to ask for the FATHER’s will and not mine.
  • JESUS showed me how to bring friends along to watch over me in my sorrow so I won’t stay there.

Deity wrapped in humanity was JESUS’s makeup. HE knew HIS plight and HIS humanity felt sorrow. It’s alright to feel this way but not stay that way. GOD wants me to open a gate to HIM and pray. HE wants to take my sorrow, guilt and shame. All I have to do is pray.

  • Are you full of sorrow?
  • Are you troubled?
  • Will you pray to the FATHER about your troubles so HE can give you peace?

In loving memory of cousin Curtis.

What to Ask For

Matthew 7: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

============

New to this “asking” thing, I prayed “Please, please let me win the lottery!” I was sincere and I thought my motives were right because I just wanted to “quickly” help those around me who were in debt, me included. I purchased a ticket and watched zealously. Strangely each number on my ticket was off by exactly one or two. What are the odds?

  • There have been many times I asked for the wrong things.
  • There have been many times I sought after things that were not good for me.
  • There have been many times I knocked on the door that would have led me to my destruction.

Asking, seeking and knocking are powerful, yet dangerous abilities. Sometimes I ask to get into trouble and GOD allows me to do it abundantly, then when I ask to get out of the trial, it seems like HE leaves me there long enough for me to wish I never had asked! What can I ask for?

  • GOD wants me to ask for wisdom, knowledge and understanding in order to grow HIS kingdom.
  • GOD wants me to seek first HIS kingdom so HE can draw all who seek HIM back to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to knock on the hearts of those who have turned their backs on HIM.

Asking for “that” person to be successful or better yet, saved, is what I find being aligned with what GOD wants. If money is required, then I truly have to check my motives to ensure the “ask” is not rooted in all kinds of evil. GOD also wants me to seek out those who are lost. HE then wants me to press on their heart by knocking on the door of their soul.

GOD also knows my needs. HE has granted me stuff, jobs and relationships. HE even showed me the location of my lost keys. HE allows me to ask for anything, but the more I ask for things that align with what HE wants, the more my prayers are answered with “Yes, of course!”

  • Are you asking for something GOD does not want you to have?
  • When is the last time you asked for something that would enable a person to seek GOD?
  • Are you seeking GOD’s kingdom?
  • Will you allow GOD to show you how to knock on someone’s heart to accept JESUS as their Savior?

Ask to come home

Hosea 14: Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.
    Your sins have been your downfall!
Take words with you
    and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
    “Forgive all our sins
and receive us graciously,
    that we may offer the fruit of our lips.

-------

“I will heal their waywardness
    and love them freely,
    for my anger has turned away from them.

============

Demanding that I be set free from the trial did not seem to work. I mean the more I squirmed, the more I seemed to stay right where I was. “Haven’t I been good?” was my weak question. “I mean years ago I served YOU that one time, remember?”

  • GOD is not impressed by my filthy righteousness.
  • GOD is not impressed with service to manipulate HIM to do my bidding.
  • GOD is not impressed by my negotiation tactics.

Proving to GOD that I am deserving of more is like proving to water that it is not wet. HE sees through my attempts to be good and sees a heart of corruption. What can I do when GOD sees through my plan?

  • GOD says to me “Return to ME, I AM the LORD your GOD.”
  • GOD says to me “Take words with you and return to ME.”
  • GOD says to me “Say ‘forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips.’”

After a while I had to take a humble approach to speaking to GOD. Nothing had worked at this point. I had to humble myself and say to HIM “I have sinned” rather than telling HIM how wrong HE was for not fixing the problem of the day. “Please receive us graciously” are more appropriate words that say “I don’t deserve grace but please give it anyway.”

GOD responds by turning away HIS anger, healing me of my waywardness and loving me freely. I humbly approach GOD and HE pours out HIS blessings on me.

  • Have you turned your back on GOD?
  • Do you feel you deserve to be out of the trial?
  • Can you humbly approach GOD and ask HIM to forgive you and to receive you graciously?

Long Return

Hosea 3: For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods. Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.

============

Unprepared was probably the nicest word I heard about my presentation. I tried to “wing it” but the audience saw through my feeble attempt. With a scowl, many in the department turned their backs to me. “How can I recover?” I asked. “Your reputation is in the toilet right now but it can be repaired, as long as you don’t kill anyone” someone said.

  • There are times when I feel I am on the outs with people.
  • There are times when I feel I am worthless to others.
  • There are times when I have actually blown it and have to straighten up and return to where I started.

“How long will it take to rebuild my reputation” I asked, thinking maybe two or three weeks. “One year, more or less” was the deadly answer I had to accept. After working extra hard to be prepared, amongst other things, I was able to rebuild my reputation. It took eighteen months and it did feel long.

  • GOD says to me “Return back to ME and I WILL restore you.”
  • GOD says to me “I WILL raise you up when you turn your ways to ME.”
  • GOD says to me “I AM the way”

I find GOD to be different. When I “blow it” GOD does not treat me the same as humans. GOD allows me to turn back to HIM daily and pours out HIS forgiveness in ways I cannot explain. HE washes me from head to toe and sets me on HIS righteous path. Sometimes the trials go longer than I would like, but I know HE is with me every step.

  • Have you made a huge mistake?
  • Do you think there is no way to return?
  • Can you stop blaming everyone around you and look to GOD for help?
  • Will you turn your face back to GOD and allow HIM to restore you in HIS time and HIS way?

An Extreme Example

Ezekiel 4: 12 Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel.” 13 The Lord said, “In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them.”

14 Then I said, “Not so, Sovereign Lord! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth.”

15 “Very well,” he said, “I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement.”

Hearing bad news is never fun. I mean it seems like I kept hearing things that were so draining, one after another. I had gotten to the point where I only wanted to hear good news so I stopped going to churches that told me I was doing “bad” stuff and only went to places that would motivate me. I mean who needs to hear about all that “sin” stuff anyway?

  • Sometimes I do not want to hear the whole story of GOD.
  • Sometimes I do not want to hear about the wrath filled GOD.
  • Sometimes I do not want to hear about the consequences of “my” sins.

Can’t they just say “GOD forgives” and leave the sin part out? No! GOD spoke through Ezekiel the prophet to show just how far gone HIS people were. HE had them exiled and allowed seven generations to die off. GOD wants sin eradicated, but how can I do this with a built in sin nature?

  • GOD says to me “I AM the way the truth and the life” meaning I have to turn to HIM for the answer to sin.
  • GOD says to me “I stand at the door and knock if anyone opens it I will come in and sup” meaning HE pursues me, all I need to do is answer.
  • GOD says to me “If anyone hears MY voice” meaning I have to listen for HIS voice.

Sin is definitely hated by GOD. HE cannot stand to be around it and HE is not to be ignored. HE DOES mind when I sin, but HE does forgive me for all my sins. HE wants me to know the extent of my need so I will go out and make disciples of HIS everlasting love.

  • Are you pointing your fingers at other people?
  • Do you think your sin is less than theirs?
  • Will you look at your sin as extremely harmful to your relationship with GOD?
  • Will you ask GOD for help since you do not have what it takes to stop sinning?
  • Can you accept HIS grace today and allow HIM to raise you up to the height HE wants you?

Changing GOD’s Mind

Jeremiah 26: 12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard. 13 Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the Lord your God. Then the Lord will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you.

============

After slipping further and further away from following GOD’s ways I noticed I was in a place where nothing I did went right. I mean even the simplest task seem to go wrong. Once I was trying to put my last quarter in the dorm washer and I dropped it, watched it bounce and supernaturally roll across the floor and under an industrial dryer.

  • Many times I have tried to change GOD’s mind to do what I want HIM to do.
  • Many times I have tried to change GOD’s mind to get HIM to work in my favor.
  • Many times I have asked GOD to change the path that I put myself on.

The problem with following my own plan is when something goes wrong I have no one to turn to. I seek to pull myself up and find myself with worse problems than when I started. How can I get GOD to listen to me? I mean HE is supposed to give me stuff right?

  • GOD says to me “Reform your ways and I will not bring disaster on you.”
  • GOD says to me “Change your actions and I will not bring you down to total ruin.”
  • GOD says to me “Obey the LORD your GOD and I will relent and not bring the disaster I have pronounced against you.”

Wow! What a sobering thought. Isn’t GOD a chump? I thought HE was only love and would never harm a hair on my head? Well, sort of. HE does have a very special place for me in HIS heart and wants me to succeed. BUT GOD must have HIS ways followed. HE actually means when HE says “Do not put any other god before ME.” In fact HE was the only one who became a human and executed every law perfectly.

GOD is always willing to change HIS mind. HE does not want wrath to fall on me so HE opens HIS arms wide every day and allows me to return to HIM, no matter what I have done. HE is willing to show me grace when I truly confess to HIM I need it.

  • Are you trying to get your way?
  • Do you think you deserve better from GOD?
  • Can you see that every human, including yourself, deserves death?
  • Will you stop pouting about your circumstance and turn to GOD for all the answers?

Ask for the Good Way

Jeremiah 6: 16 This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look;
    ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and walk in it,
    and you will find rest for your souls.
    But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

============

Hanging out at the club my “friends” and I were discussing body parts. As I laughed at one joke something came over me. “Why is that funny?” the voice said. I had started going back to church at the time and wanted to teach Sunday school. I was at a crossroads. Do I continue down a lust-filled path?

  • There are times when I am placed at the crossroads.
  • There are times when I have to make a choice.
  • There are times when I must choose my way or GOD’s way.

Sunday school seemed like the way to go, but it meant I would have to stop hanging with my “friends.” No more drunkenness, no more lust and no more foul language. “Man, this seems like I’m getting the short end on this one” I thought to myself.

  • GOD says to me “Ask for the ancient paths and you will not be disappointed.”
  • GOD says to me “Ask where the good way is and walk in it.”
  • GOD says to me “I desire to give you rest. Follow MY ways and you will have peace.”

When I reject the Sunday school route, it seemed like things fell apart. Trouble came from all sides and I had to turn to the only place I could, namely GOD. After getting back on HIS path, I noticed a whole new world of people I had never seen before. I could serve and have fun. My blindness was lifted and I could finally see GOD by the people HE delivered to me.

  • Are you fighting GOD?
  • Are your choices for you or for HIM?
  • Can you take a look at the crossroads you are at and choose HIM?
