First of Many

First of Many

Revelation 14: Then I looked, and there was the Lamb standing on Mount Zion; with him were 144,000 people who have his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven that sounded like a roaring waterfall, like a loud peal of thunder. It sounded like the music made by musicians playing their harps. The 144,000 people stood before the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders; they were singing a new song, which only they could learn. Of the whole human race they are the only ones who have been redeemed. They are the men who have kept themselves pure by not having sexual relations with women; they are virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been redeemed from the rest of the human race and are the first ones to be offered to God and to the Lamb. They have never been known to tell lies; they are faultless.

Standing on the playground, I waited to be picked. I expected to be picked last because the jocks would win and I was not very coordinated. To my surprise, I was picked early. I had the best game of my kickball career! I not only kicked the ball and got on base, but I caught one during the game!

  • I was one of the first chosen.
  • There was nothing special about me, but I was chosen.
  • Out of the whole playground, I was chosen early, but many followed.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, saw JESUS somewhere else, standing on Mount Zion. He also saw those who had received a special seal when the sixth seal was opened. They were not the only ones saved, rather the first in a point in time, who kept themselves pure and followed CHRIST without following the world.

My Observations:

  • The special woman gave birth to a special child through a chosen people.
  • The chosen people are called the bride of JESUS.
  • Being the first of many required 12,000 from each tribe, chosen by GOD.

Numbers and gender can trip people up after reading this passage. I mean, only 144,000 men being redeemed, can seem like everyone else in the world is useless. BUT GOD is revealing something different.

HE is the one who gave the words to a writer “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Our cursed mind and eyes can question GOD’s sequence of events, missing out on the purity and not lying. I am glad JESUS redeemed all who believe in HIM.

Challenge

  • How does the writer try to show how the group was “with” JESUS?
  • Does any part of this passage trip you up?
  • Will you look at GOD’s salvation of all humans differently and seek a great relationship with HIM today by believing in JESUS as the Savior?

Uncomfortable

Uncomfortable

Revelation 6: Then I saw the Lamb break open the first of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice that sounded like thunder, “Come!” I looked, and there was a white horse. Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown. He rode out as a conqueror to conquer.

Having gotten comfortable in my role, I brought pictures in to decorate my desk. I displayed trophies of accolades and planned times to gather at my desk for enjoyment. But then a new set of leaders came in and caused everyone to feel uncomfortable as to whether they would stay with the company or not.

  • I did not see the takeover happen.
  • I felt uncomfortable at a place I once felt relaxed.
  • I heard the smooth words of the new leaders, but knew it was the beginning of the end.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, heard one of the four living creatures say one word, “come!” The creature then showed John the beginning of the end of Satan’s kingdom. When Satan was thrown out of heaven, his fate was sealed. This first of seven seals brought on a conquering spirit to make people want to take over.

My Observations:

  • Hostile takeovers make the world an uncomfortable place to be.
  • People who try to lie, cheat and steal will desire to conquer the “weak.”
  • GOD will unleash a conqueror  to make the world uncomfortable.

Saying the earth will be destroyed is unpopular. I mean, within each one of us is built in self-preservation. Why would GOD destroy what HE made? Same reason HE cursed the earth and HIS creation, namely sin. BUT GOD has a remedy!

JESUS saved those who believe in GOD’s curse on humans when Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge. GOD’s judgement will happen and people focus on that. BUT HE wants us to focus on the cure rather than the ailment. There is a way out, namely to simply believe JESUS made a way.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer mentions the loud voice that sounded like thunder?
  • Are you trying to become comfortable here on earth?
  • Will you help seek GOD’s Kingdom which is people who need to be saved versus relying on false comfort of Satan’s kingdom which seems okay, but will take you away from CHRIST?

Preparation

Preparation

1 Thessalonians 1: All those people speak about how you received us when we visited you, and how you turned away from idols to God, to serve the true and living God 10 and to wait for his Son to come from heaven—his Son Jesus, whom he raised from death and who rescues us from God's anger that is coming.

Seeing the leaves change color, I could tell the season was fall. I could feel a crispness in the air that let me know winter was on its way. In the region where I live, winter meant snow and very cold temperatures I had to get prepared for.

  • I had to be prepared for snow, ice and cold.
  • I had to change my mindset from wearing shorts to wearing something that would protect me from the elements.
  • I had to accept the change and get prepared because I knew it was coming.

Paul, Silas and Timothy were excited about how the Thessalonians stopped worshipping idols to become dedicated followers of JESUS. They had stopped placing their hope in material things that were lifeless. When they heard the Good News, they “received” it and dedicated their lives to CHRIST.

My Observations

  • GOD knows what is in my heart and is please when I choose HIM.
  • People, food, clothes, jobs, addictions and other things can become idols that take my mind off of GOD.
  • GOD wants to prepare me for JESUS’ return.

Wrath of GOD is a difficult but necessary topic. I mean, I try to make HIM a pushover, only forgiving my sins and giving me what I want. When I place GOD in the “Just give me my wish” bucket, I can get disappointed with HIS performance.

GOD is sovereign and sinless. HIS wrath can be poured out when I think and act like Satan who chose to try to “be GOD.” Satan was thrown from heaven and his fate was sealed. Sinless resurrected JESUS opened his fate and poured out HIS wrath on him and those who act like him. Confusing? It will happen. That’s what GOD is preparing us for. I am glad JESUS saved us from “GOD’s anger that is coming.”

Challenge

  • What do you think the people of Thessalonica were searching for?
  • Have you ever elevated a person or job or thing above your relationship with CHRIST?
  • Will you allow GOD to prepare you for HIS purpose so HE can protect you from any wrath HE may have?

Are you ready for the ceremony?

Revelation 11: 15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:
“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,
and he will reign for ever and ever.”

============

Billions of people are predicted to watch the ceremony of royalty getting married this weekend. Months and months of planning went into this effort, yet it pales in comparison to the ceremony shown to John in this passage.

The seventh and final angel has blown his trumpet during this grand coronation of our risen LORD and savior JESUS who is the Messiah. This marks the finality of GOD’s judgment on sin and begins a sequence of events that leads to eternal life for some and death for others.
  • My sin on this earth has a limited time.
  • My sin on this earth can and will be held against me.
  • My sin on this earth amounts to nothing but pain and frustration.
JESUS has overcome sin through HIS death and resurrection. The FATHER has placed HIM over all of creation once again. JESUS took on the punishment for my sin but I still have to stand before HIM to give an account of my life.

During this incredibly supreme ceremony JESUS is declared LORD and “HE will reign for ever and ever.”

  • Are you so focused on your current situation that you cannot praise GOD for loving you?
  • Can you take a moment to praise HIM for all HE has done for you?
  • Will you take a moment to tell someone about HIS SON and how HE saved you?
