Commitment

Commitment

Exodus 12: 43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the ordinance of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat it. 44 But every man’s servant who is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then he may eat it. 45 A sojourner and a hired servant shall not eat it. 46 In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not carry any of the flesh outside the house, nor shall you break one of its bones. 47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48 And when a stranger dwells with you and wants to keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as a native of the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat it. 49 One law shall be for the native-born and for the stranger who dwells among you.”

50 Thus all the children of Israel did; as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. 51 And it came to pass, on that very same day, that the Lord brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt according to their armies.

============

GOD prophesied that JESUS would become the sacrificial lamb during the Passover. Now HE gives the commitment level for HIS people to follow.

My Observations:

  • GOD first told Abraham to become circumcised.
  • Circumcision was important to GOD, so HE made sure it was clear that HE wanted this for HIS people.
  • GOD was separating HIS people from everyone else.

If anyone challenged GOD’s statement with “But what if” statements, GOD provided an answer that was clear. “But what if a stranger comes?” or “Should I force my employee to eat the Passover?” Many other questions could arise about the Passover feast, BUT GOD gave clear instruction about who should eat the meal.

Just like telling Moses to remove his sandals as he stood on Holy ground, GOD again, mentions circumcision as a sacred act HE desired for HIS people. Before the children of Israel could leave, GOD needed a commitment, namely circumcision of all males who were HIS followers They obeyed.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about the need for circumcision to eat the Passover meal?
  • Have you ever asked GOD for stuff but never considered what commitment HE wants from you?
  • What are you doing to show GOD that you are committed to HIS cause?

Everyone But You

Everyone But You

Exodos 4: 24 And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the Lord met him and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!” 26 So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood!”—because of the circumcision.

============

After leaving Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, they encountered the preincarnate JESUS. HE was about to kill Moses, whom HE called to bring the people out of Egypt. Zipporah performed a circumcision on Eliezer. JESUS let Moses go.

My Observations:

  • GOD would not allow Moses to go to Egypt unless Gershom and Eliezer were circumcised.
  • GOD told Abram, also known as Abraham, to be circumcised and from then on, every male was to be circumcised on the eight day.
  • GOD would not allow Moses to be HIS leader unless he was serious about following what HE specified.

When everyone else could get away with ignoring what GOD said, Moses could not. When Moses said “yes” to GOD’s calling, he also said “Yes” to following GOD the way HE wanted. There were many men who grew up uncircumcised around Moses, but he had to follow what GOD told Abram to promise.

Zipporah may not have been privy to how serious GOD was about the covenant of circumcision. What seemed insignificant to her was extremely important to GOD. You would think that GOD would have simply told Moses to perform the circumcision like HE told Abram.

He must have circumcised Gershom, but for some reason Eliezer was not. This problem had to be rectified by Zipporah, who may have been against the circumcision. She reluctantly performed the delicate operation and protested. GOD did not harm Moses and it shows that HE is serious about HIS leaders. HE also intervenes.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about this circumcision incident?
  • Has GOD said for you to do something that you may have mislabeled as insignificant?
  • Do you say, “Everyone else can do stuff, why can’t I?” when GOD is trying to make you HIS leader?

Opportunity Blindness

Opportunity Blindness

Genesis 34: 20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying: 21 “These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. 23 Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.” 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

============

Hamor and Shechem got so excited about the possibility of becoming even more wealthy than they were, that they told all the men about it. They persuaded the men to become circumcised as part of the peace treaty.

My Observations:

  • Hamor and Shechem were fooled by the sons of Jacob into thinking they were at peace with what was done to Dinah.
  • Hamor and Shechem seemed to dream of getting even more wealthy and powerful.
  • Hamor and Shechem were plotting to take all of Jacob’s wealth, but they had to consent to being circumcised.

Blinded by the possibility of becoming wealthier, the men of Shechem started to drop their guards regarding Jacob and his vast group. Their worries turned into dreams of marrying his daughters and acquiring his wealth. They voluntarily became circumcised, probably thinking this would make them one of Jacob’s groups.

Little did they know, the sons of Jacob had deceived them. The sons of Jacob were planning revenge and put on a great act. Sometimes we too can fall into blindness over becoming wealthy. Like Shechem, blindness of wealth and fame can give false security to us. BUT GOD saw the plot Hamor and Shechem were planning.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD told Moses about Hamor and Shechem’s plot?
  • Have you ever wanted wealth so badly, that you lowered your standards to get it?
  • Will you ask GOD to open your eyes to any blindness so HE can guide you to HIS better path?

Revenge Put in Motion

Revenge Put in Motion

Genesis 34: 13 But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. 14 And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us. 15 But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised, 16 then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. 17 But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”

18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. 19 So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.

============

Hearing about the violation of Dinah, her brothers decided to do something about it. They deceived Shechem and Hamor by telling them they needed to become circumcised. This way the men of Shechem would become like the men of Israel, Jacob’s sons.

My Observations:

  • Jacob’s sons were furious enough to plan out revenge.
  • Jacob’s household followed the covenant given to Abraham, that all males born or servants who worked for the family, would be circumcised.
  • Shechem was first in line, probably dreaming of having Dinah as his wife.

GOD told Abraham to be circumcised when he was ninety-nine. HE also said that males had to be circumcised on the eighth day, or when the child is eight days old. Jacob and his entire family followed this covenant. Jacob’s son’s knew this process would be painful for adults, so they added it to their plan.

Shechem, blinded by getting his way, fell into the trap created by Jacob’s sons. He was so used to getting his way that this plan looked like he had won over Jacob and his family. He thought that the men of Shechem would be excited about being able to marry the daughters of Jacob, so he got first in line. GOD saw the plan for revenge put in place.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about the plan for revenge put in place by Jacob’s sons?
  • Have you ever thought about taking revenge on someone?
  • Can you let go of any ill will you may have against someone and allow GOD to own vengeance?

Delight as Promised

 Delight as Promised

Genesis 21: And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac. Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. And Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me.” She also said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”

============

Abraham and Sarah were reunited. They settled in the land of the Philistines and all was well. Then the LORD removed the supernatural closing of Sarah’s womb, enabling her to have a child. HE did as HE said at the time HE said, one year later.

During this time, GOD wiped out Sodom and Gomorrah, causing Abraham and Sarah to move. HE also performed a miracle of closing and opening the wombs of the women associated with Abimelech.

My Observations:

  • Sarah was delighted to finally become pregnant after decades of waiting on GOD.
  • Sarah laughed out of joy that GOD kept HIS promise and probably that she was chosen.
  • GOD.
  • Sarah referred to Abraham in her statement of delight, perhaps feeling relieved that the prophecy was true and nothing was wrong with her.

After years of thinking “is something wrong with me?”, Sarah finally conceived the child she wanted. It seemed like everyone else was able to get pregnant, but Sarah remained barren. Her plan backfired, when she insisted that Abraham have a child by Hagar.

Now she was full of delight. Abraham circumcised Isaac, just as the LORD commanded him. Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac was born and Sarah was ninety.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD told Moses about Sarah’s reaction?
  • Have you ever waited on GOD’s promise for a long time and thought HE would not keep HIS promise?
  • When GOD makes a promise to you, are you faithful that HE will keep it, even if HIS timing is different than yours?

Sign of the Covenant

Sign of the Covenant

Genesis 17: And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”

============

Abram’s name was changed to Abraham by GOD. The promise was restated that Abraham would have so many descendants that they could not be numbered. But then GOD gives a strange commandment. “Every male child among you must be circumcised.” GOD then went into detail of what circumcision was and who was supposed to have it done to.

My Observations:

  • GOD said to Abraham why HE wanted circumcision, namely it would be a sign of the covenant.
  • GOD began setting apart a group of people who intentionally followed HIM.
  • GOD recognized earth’s commerce and said even those purchased would need to be circumcised.

You, your children, your family, your friends and your employees need to be circumcised, were the words of the covenant that would begin setting apart the descendants of Abraham. A physical, permanent, outpatient operation would serve as a mark to other humans that he belonged to GOD as part of the promise. GOD does not go into detail of the root of the sigh.

GOD does say, “MY covenant shall be in your flesh.” The same flesh that conceived sin, will now bring forth a promise. The curse from GOD that was placed on Adam, caused every human to be born with a sin nature. GOD had in HIS plan a way to save all humans. Through Abraham, a descendant would be born.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD was so clear in HIS covenant to Abraham?
  • Do you have any reminders of GOD’s promise to you?
  • Can you take time today to look back at the promises GOD made between you and HIM?

Circumcised, Baptized, Symbolized

Circumcised, Baptized, Symbolized

Colossians 2: 11 In union with Christ you were circumcised, not with the circumcision that is made by human beings, but with the circumcision made by Christ, which consists of being freed from the power of this sinful self. 12 For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ through your faith in the active power of God, who raised him from death.

============

Joining a group made me feel like I finally fit in. I had gone through all the barriers of joining and received a pin that represented my inclusion in the group. To some, this was a symbol that would shape their life.

  • I felt I was part of a group.
  • I wore my symbols proudly.
  • I thought the group gave me “purpose.”

Paul spoke of the symbolism of circumcision and baptism. He lets everyone know that true circumcision is not from humans rather it is a spiritual cutting of the heart that results  being freed from the enslaving power of sin. He also explains that baptism is a symbolic death and resurrection believers can share to show their faith in JESUS.

My Observations

  • I can celebrate being freed from sin every day by recognizing JESUS.
  • I can show the world I “belong” to the largest family that will live eternally by praising JESUS.
  • I can live as a freed person by placing my trust in JESUS.

Circumcision and baptism are nice symbolic rituals, BUT GOD wants my heart. I mean, the rules have to apply for men and women alike. HE sees the sin in my heart and knows I need surgery that can only come from HIM.

HE cuts away the sin that clings to my soul and replaces it with HIS SPIRIT. HE then washes away all my sins with the blood of JESUS which covers me from head to toe. The blood that JESUS shed for me is still powerful enough to raise me from the dead. I am glad I have already been raised from an eternal death.

Challenge

  • What circumcision is the writer speaking of?
  • Have you ever just wanted to be “free?”
  • Will you accept CHRIST’s freedom by being baptized into HIS vast family so you can belong to HIM today?

Celebration

Celebration

Philippians 3:  In conclusion, my friends, be joyful in your union with the Lord. I don't mind repeating what I have written before, and you will be safer if I do so. Watch out for those who do evil things, those dogs, those who insist on cutting the body. It is we, not they, who have received the true circumcision, for we worship God by means of his Spirit and rejoice in our life in union with Christ Jesus. We do not put any trust in external ceremonies.

============

Preparing for the celebration was hard work. Lists were made, lots of things were prioritized and budgets were blown. Large groups of people were involved in this frenzied experience. Lost sleep, meetings and stress ensued. “It’s tradition” someone said, trying to make sense out of the madness.

  • We had placed high value on ceremonies.
  • We placed a lot of trust in the tradition.
  • We made sure the photo opportunities looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.

Paul repeats himself by saying “Be joyful in your union with the LORD.” He then warns everyone about trusting in “external ceremonies” versus simply trusting in the union with CHRIST JESUS. He knew that looking holy did not make a person holy.

My Observations

  • My external actions may look good to people, BUT GOD rates my righteousness as filthy.
  • GOD saw my sinful actions and saved me anyway.
  • Only my union with CHRIST JESUS can save me.

Celebrating special days or people may have its value, but can sometimes be prioritized over the One who deserves celebration, namely JESUS. I mean, it is alright to recognize leaders or to be circumcised or to celebrate accomplishments, but placing trust in these ceremonies could make us think that we holier than we are.

Being “joyful” in union with the LORD can happen every day. No special day or moment is needed. GOD made it possible for me to celebrate the LORD each and every day. Traditions are nice, but I am glad I can recognize CHRIST without the need for anyone to see it.

Challenge

  • Who is the writer warning everyone about?
  • What is the “true circumcision?”
  • Will you celebrate your relationship with CHRIST as often as you can without the need for a special day or person triggering an event?

What Matters

What Matters

Galatians 5: Listen! I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, it means that Christ is of no use to you at all. Once more I warn any man who allows himself to be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the whole Law. Those of you who try to be put right with God by obeying the Law have cut yourselves off from Christ. You are outside God's grace. As for us, our hope is that God will put us right with him; and this is what we wait for by the power of God's Spirit working through our faith. For when we are in union with Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor the lack of it makes any difference at all; what matters is faith that works through love.

============

One more thing went wrong that day. “LORD, what!?” was my frustrated cry. “Aren’t I doing enough? I’m trying to live right and it seems like those who easily do wrong are getting ahead in life!”  When I calmed down, the situation remained the same but I could quiet down to listen to GOD.

  • I thought I could live right to make everything go “”my” way.
  • I was doing “good” for me versus serving GOD.
  • I wanted something from the “deal” with GOD instead of simply living as HE wants.

Paul urges the Gentiles not to half-follow the Law by picking and choosing certain parts in efforts to feel closer to GOD. He warns everyone that by trying to depend on the Law to measure how “good” one can be brings judgment of the whole Law rather than freedom.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to see that HIS grace is what saved me.
  • GOD wants me to recognize that there is nothing in me that is worthy of HIS grace.
  • GOD wants me to accept HIS wonderful gift, which is HIS only SON.

When things go wrong, the HOLY SPIRIT is there to pick me up. I mean, because I believe that JESUS died to save me eternally, HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me and anyone else who believes. Comfort, guidance, discernment and peace is what is given to all who believe.

Unfortunately there is a war inside me that tries to take over the situation, causing me to doubt GOD’s true love. I think “I” have to do something rather than simply having faith in HIS ways. I am glad JESUS forgives me for those weak moments and restores my faith in HIM.

Challenge

  • What do you think was going on with this group of people?
  • What does it mean to be “put right” with GOD?
  • Will you seek unity with CHRIST through faith versus trying to be “good” enough to please GOD who is already pleased with you?

Loved Before or After

Loved Before or After

Romans 4: Is this blessedness only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness. 10 Under what circumstances was it credited? Was it after he was circumcised, or before? It was not after, but before! 11 And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And he is then also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

============

After being ridiculed about my hair, glasses clothes and body shape, I wondered what was left to love. There were other groups who did not like my skin color either. I felt quite alone. “JESUS loves you” someone said. “How?” I wondered. No one else seems to love me. I thought.

  • There were times when I wondered if I could be loved.
  • There were times when I felt like an outcast.
  • There were times when I believed the ugly labels some people placed on me.

Paul explains circumcision to a group of people who felt privileged for doing so. He explains what David wrote in a Psalm regarding people being blessed because their sin is not counted against them and are forgiven. This forgiveness was for everyone, Paul explains. He was trying to break their habit of trying to exclude people.

  • GOD wants me to welcome anyone HE sends to me or sends me to.
  • GOD wants me to show love to my neighbor regardless of how they look or act.
  • GOD wants me to tell people HE loves them, no matter what sin they have done.

GOD’s love is not prejudiced. HE loves those who hate other people and who hate HIM. HE loved the world so much that HE died for it. JESUS, being GOD, saw all the sins I would commit and died for me anyway. HE loved me before I loved HIM. I did not have to change for JESUS to love me. HE changed me after I knew HIM.

  • Are you around people yet feel alone?
  • Do you feel like an outcast?
  • Will you believe that GOD made you and loved how HE made you and is so pleased with you that HE, through JESUS, died for you and was raised from the dead for you?

Voluntary Heart Surgery

Voluntary Heart Surgery

Romans 2: 25 If you obey the Law, your circumcision is of value; but if you disobey the Law, you might as well never have been circumcised. 26 If the Gentile, who is not circumcised, obeys the commands of the Law, will not God regard him as though he were circumcised? 27 And so you Jews will be condemned by the Gentiles because you break the Law, even though you have it written down and are circumcised; but they obey the Law, even though they are not physically circumcised. 28 After all, who is a real Jew, truly circumcised? It is not the man who is a Jew on the outside, whose circumcision is a physical thing. 29 Rather, the real Jew is the person who is a Jew on the inside, that is, whose heart has been circumcised, and this is the work of God's Spirit, not of the written Law. Such a person receives praise from God, not from human beings.

============

 “Say you are sorry” were words that did not resonate with me. I mean, I would say the words, but I was not sorry for putting the brat in the box and sitting on the lid. He was my age but acting like he never had seen punishment of any kind.

Later in life, I noticed all kinds of brats in school and then in the workplace. I wish I could put “that” person in a box and sit on the lid, I would think to myself.

  • There have been many people I did not like.
  • There have been many people I wanted to show “my” justice to.
  • There have been many people I desired to see their demise, because that was in my heart.

Paul speaks about something complicated. The Laws of Moses required circumcision. When the church leaders did this, it felt like more of a rite of passage than obedience. They figured out loopholes in the Law rather than following it with their hearts. Paul tries to convince those who have gone through the trouble of following the Law, to pay attention to the “heart” of the Law. This required “surrender.”

  • GOD wants me to surrender my hatred for people to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to well pray for my enemies.
  • GOD wants me to love those who hate me.

Since the heart is extremely wicked, there is only one surgeon who can fix it, namely JESUS. HE sends in a specialist who can get into the darkest corners of my heart and eradicate any cancerous hatred that resides.

GOD promised that if I confess my sins to HIM, HE would be faithful and just to forgive me of my sins and cleanse me of all unrighteousness. JESUS places the HOLY SPIRIT inside me to change my heart. It is up to me to accept HIS SPIRIT when HE knocks on my heart. I accept.

  • Is your heart full of hatred masked in the communication of the “news?”
  • Do you feel better when you see someone get what is coming to them?
  • Will you allow GOD to change your heart before you carry hatred, you don’t know you are carrying, into other aspects of your life today?

Deeper Relationship

Jeremiah 4:This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:
“Break up your unplowed ground
    and do not sow among thorns.
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord,
    circumcise your hearts,
    you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,
or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire
    because of the evil you have done—
    burn with no one to quench it.

============

After recovering from my immature tantrum, I asked GOD, “Why didn’t I get into the Junior Executive program during the first job I had out of college?” I went to church and the preacher mumbled stuff about being “sent” places. Sent? What about the places “I” want to go? I pouted.

  • GOD says to me “The heart is desperately wicked, who can know it”
  • GOD says to me “There is a way that seems right to a man.”
  • GOD says to me “Human righteousness is like a dung pile.”

After I settled down I said to GOD “I will stay here” although I despised the town I was in at the time. Months later I received a job back in my home town. I could see the fruit of GOD on so many levels. HE sent me to a tiny church in the middle of the city. Many people professed CHRIST as their LORD. I see now, that was the right path.

  • GOD wants me to “Circumcise my heart” by getting rid of the need to have “my” way.
  • GOD wants me to “Break up my unplowed fertile ground leaving the thorns alone” by seeking HIS plan for a change.
  • GOD wants me to understand that HE does have wrath but HIS love is far greater.

After growing up a bit, I realize that “my” life is not mine at all, it is GOD’s. HE can and should be able to do with my life, whatever pleases HIM. After a while, getting “my” way should line up with getting “GOD’s” way. When I seek the kingdom first, that’s exactly what GOD will give me, in abundance! My way may include fame and riches, GOD’s way will include more and more of HIS kingdom!

  • Have you turned away from GOD?
  • Do you think your plan is going to work without HIM?
  • Will you stop trying to do things on your own and seek GOD’s wisdom?
