Lampstand of the Tabernacle

Lampstand of the Tabernacle

Exodus 27: 20 “And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually. 21 In the tabernacle of meeting, outside the veil which is before the Testimony, Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening until morning before the Lord. It shall be a statute forever to their generations on behalf of the children of Israel.

============

GOD gave Moses instructions on how to keep the fire of the lampstand burning at each stop.

My Observations:

  • GOD the FATHER, SON and HOLY SPIRIT showed HIMSELF as fire in a bush to Moses and in a pillar of fire to the children of Israel.
  • GOD told Moses that Aaron and his sons, representing the Levitical priests, will tend to the fire.
  • GOD wanted a symbolic gesture of showing the people that HE would never leave them and HE could be counted on.

When the children of Israel would stop where GOD told them to stop, they would have to erect the tabernacle based on the instructions GOD gave them. The lampstand would be put up and lit until they were told to leave. This meant the priests had to keep olives ready to be pressed into oil. GOD would provide the olives in abundance.

GOD wanted you and me to know HE is with us, no matter how things seem. JESUS is the “light” of the world. HE lights up dark paths and eradicates dark thoughts. HE gives HIS light to us to pass on to others. We should never hide the light HE has given us in shame.

This symbolic light was to provide encouragement to all people that JESUS has overcome the world. It began with the priests and ended with JESUS being raised from the dead.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about keeping the fire of the tabernacle lampstand?
  • What light has GOD given you?
  • Is something hindering you from shining GOD’s light on those around you?

Protecting the People

Protecting the People

Exodus 19: 21 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down and warn the people, lest they break through to gaze at the Lord, and many of them perish. 22 Also let the priests who come near the Lord consecrate themselves, lest the Lord break out against them.”

23 But Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying, ‘Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.’ ”

24 Then the Lord said to him, “Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest He break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

GOD led Moses and the children of Israel, a few months into the journey towards the promised land, to Mount Sinai. HE covered the mountain in a cloud and set it on fire. After calling Moses to the top of the mountain, HE told Moses to go back down the mountain and warn the people not to try to peek at HIM, otherwise they would die.

My Observations:

  • GOD seemed to only want to speak to Moses to give the people instructions.
  • GOD knew the people would try to see HIM, so HE added a sense of urgency to HIS warning.
  • GOD called some of the people priests before HE gave the instructions of priesthood.

Protection comes to mind when reading this passage. GOD wanted to protect the people from their own curiosity. HE was about to establish the Levitical Priests who would be responsible for carrying the Law. HE did not want them to die before HE gave instructions of how to reverently handle HIS presence.

GOD would only speak to Moses and Aaron at this point. Moses had to climb a mountain at age eighty, then climb down a few times. This direct contact with GOD seemed to need the barrier of height so no one would accidentally stumble into HIS presence. GOD burned the mountain. There were no animals, insects or people left. GOD protected the people from inadvertently seeing HIM.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about HIS warning to the people to not try to look at HIM?
  • Are you struggling with how you perceive who GOD is by forcing HIM to act a certain way before you do what HE told you to do through other servants, similar to Moses’s people?
  • Have you pondered what level of reverence you treat GOD or other people?

For and Against

For and Against

Exodus 6: 20 Now Amram took for himself Jochebed, his father’s sister, as wife; and she bore him Aaron and Moses. And the years of the life of Amram were one hundred and thirty-seven. 21 The sons of Izhar were Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. 22 And the sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan, and Zithri. 23 Aaron took to himself Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nahshon, as wife; and she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 24 And the sons of Korah were Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph. These are the families of the Korahites. 25 Eleazar, Aaron’s son, took for himself one of the daughters of Putiel as wife; and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites according to their families.

26 These are the same Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said, “Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.”27 These are the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt. These are the same Moses and Aaron.

Continuing with the abrupt genealogy, Moses gets to his parents. We see that Aaron is older, then he states that his father lived to be the same age as Levi. At first it looks like another list of names. But the list has gaps, so the list may be saying something other than history.

My Observations:

  • Hebron, Kohat’s son, is missing from this list.
  • Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s sons, did not have any detail.
  • Korah was mentioned prominently and so was Phinehas.

“Why these two people?” I had to ask. Later we will see that the Korahites rebelled against Moses and Phinehas was trustworthy. The missing names make sense when looking at this list from the root of the problem and the root of the solution, point of view. Moses may have written this book after going through the rebellion written in Numbers.

Phinehas killed an Israelite man, Zimri, and a Midianite woman, Kozbi, who were committing sin in the camp. Korah, on the other hand, eventually challenged Moses and Aaron’s leadership and priesthood. The Korahites were swallowed up by the earth after the rebellion. “Where is Hebron, Miriam and other people that should be on the list? You may ask. I believe this list is not about lineage but about where did the problem begin and who stayed by my side.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD remind Moses about this list of people?
  • Have you been in crowds who were for GOD and crowds that seemed against HIM?
  • Are you looking at GOD’s calling on your life or looking at what is happening with other people?
