No Pain

No Pain

Revelation 16: Then I heard a loud voice speaking from the temple to the seven angels: “Go and pour out the seven bowls of God's anger on the earth!”

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth. Terrible and painful sores appeared on those who had the mark of the beast and on those who had worshiped its image.

============

During the bowling tournament, my bowling partner looked at my face and asked me if I was alright. I said I felt fine, but she said she watched a bump appear on my face right in front of her. After the tournament, I went back and took a very hot shower, thinking “maybe I had come in contact with something.”

  • I had chicken pox for the second time.
  • I had rashes and bumps appear all over my body.
  • I itched from head to toe!

John, the disciple JESUS loved, heard a loud voice, perhaps JESUS, speak. The seven angels who were given bowls of GOD’s anger began to pour them out on the earth. Anyone who had believed in the beast, who cursed GOD, would receive painful sores.

My Observations:

  • GOD’s anger will cause those who oppose HIM, to experience terrible pain.
  • Fear that will cause people to follow the beast, will also cause terrible pain.
  • Trying to save my own life will cause me to lose it instead.

Giving up on GOD to try other methods of becoming whole is a terrible mistake. I mean, GOD reveals that life is HIS and so is death. HE alone knows the day and time HE has appointed for people to die or be caught up in the rapture.

Unfortunately there will be some who reject the living GOD to follow a human who curses HIM. They will focus on a leader who will seemingly unite the world and control commerce. Following this person will bring on GOD’s wrath that will not be able to be explained away. I am glad people who believe in JESUS will not experience the pain of HIS wrath.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention the volume of the voice?
  • Have you ever experienced pain or sores?
  • Will you consider your relationship with JESUS to avoid the end time wrath, even if you are experiencing pain right now?

Underserved Suffering

Underserved Suffering

1 Peter 2: 18 You servants must submit yourselves to your masters and show them complete respect, not only to those who are kind and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19 God will bless you for this, if you endure the pain of undeserved suffering because you are conscious of his will. 20 For what credit is there if you endure the beatings you deserve for having done wrong? But if you endure suffering even when you have done right, God will bless you for it.

============

After working hard for years, I ran into that boss. He said and did all the wrong things and was slippery enough to make his employees scapegoats. I was warned about working for him, but I thought I could win him over by being “nice.” I was wrong.

  • I ended up suffering while working under him.
  • I questioned GOD for having me go through suffering.
  • I wondered if there would be any relief from suffering.

Peter turns to some more difficult words to hear. He suggests that believers understand that they would suffer, just like CHRIST, who had to endure  shame, blame and being murdered. Peter suggests that believers endure so GOD will see the endurance and bless the believer.

My Observations:

  • Abuse is not acceptable, BUT GOD sees your suffering and will bless you and I for it.
  • Harsh environments are never welcome, BUT GOD sees the environment you and I have endured and will reward our endurance.
  • Difficult situation are never wanted, BUT GOD allows you and I to go through them to understand a tiny glimpse of what JESUS went through.

I don’t know why we have to suffer. I mean, can’t GOD just snap HIS fingers and make everything easy? Yes, but HIS decrees allowed Satan to try to oppose HIM. The enemy wants to cause pain and suffering to steal people away from GOD. He uses temptation to make people want power, riches and fame. They will stop at nothing to gain it. They will even make people suffer.

GOD wants me to value HIS way and turn away from the world’s way. When I do, I will be labeled as weird. I may be mocked, lied upon and suffer undeserved hardships. GOD sees the pain and keeps track of how much I showed respect to those who are harsh. I am glad GOD sees the heart and has  a better plan for my suffering.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention suffering?
  • Have you ever come out of suffering and become stronger?
  • Will you rethink the suffering you are going through at work and know GOD sees your suffering and has great rewards for your endurance?

Headed to Something New

Headed to Something New

James 1:1  From James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ:

Greetings to all God's people scattered over the whole world.

============

Being “let go” did not feel good at all. No matter how it was phrased, I could not wrap my mind around “Why did this happen to me?” “The position was eliminated” were the only words of comfort.

  • I felt lost and directionless.
  • I was not prepared to be out in the world.
  • I did not know GOD had something much better in store for me.

James, human brother of JESUS, writes a letter to “GOD’s people scattered over the world.” The scattering did not come easy. In fact, because of belief in JESUS, many people were persecuted. They had to leave their homes, ill prepared, not knowing the future.

My Observations:

  • GOD scatters HIS people for HIS purpose.
  • Change is usually difficult for me, BUT GOD has a reason for it.
  • Humans may not provide the right words to comfort me, BUT THE COMFORTER makes it clear that being scattered is not a bad thing.

Sometimes it feels like GOD is just not there. I mean, why in the world would HE push me out into the world with no plan? HE replies, “This is MY plan.” When I see HIS plan unfolding, I usually don’t like it. BUT GOD is doing something amazing that I don’t know.

GOD addresses my deepest fears by putting me in situations I need.  Ugh! Another problem? Yes. HE keeps allowing me to be scattered so I can be sent somewhere that I would not have otherwise gone. HE then tells me to stand firm for HIM in other places. I am glad GOD has a great and wonderful plan for me that includes “this” situation.

Challenge

  • How does the writer write a letter to people scattered all over the world?
  • Why do you think James refers to himself as a servant of his brother JESUS?
  • Have you ever been in a difficult situation and wondered where is GOD?
  • Will you look at your current situation as an area that GOD is trying to address so you can look forward to HIS plan for you today?

Purpose for Pain

Purpose for Pain

Colossians 1: 24 And now I am happy about my sufferings for you, for by means of my physical sufferings I am helping to complete what still remains of Christ's sufferings on behalf of his body, the church.

============

Stepping down off the porch, my foot landed in a peculiar way. I immediately looked at it and nothing seemed wrong. I walked around as normal the rest of that day. When I wanted to go to bed, I noticed pain. I looked at my foot again, this time it was swollen. I writhed in pain.

  • I wanted the pain to be over!
  • I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
  • I questioned the purpose of pain.

Paul definitely suffered for JESUS. When he gave up his luxurious, status filled position as a Pharisee of Pharisees, followers of JESUS did not believe him, and he was outcast from the leaders. The Pharisees imparted great suffering on Paul, but life did not add any comfort as he was bit by a venomous snake and shipwrecked. One thing kept him going, namely JESUS.

My Observations

  • CHRIST suffered in anguish over my sins.
  • CHRIST suffered for me and HE is GOD.
  • CHRIST was slandered, blamed, chased, beaten and murdered for me.

Pain has purpose. I mean, when I feel pain in my body it could be alerting me that something is wrong or something is on its way to healing. Many people who question GOD ask “Why does GOD allow pain?” That’s a question I have hit HIM with. But as I see what JESUS did I ask a new question. “Why did YOU love me so much that YOU took my punishment?”

Avoiding pain is impossible in this life. Suffering seems to surface daily. BUT GOD is fighting battles we can’t imagine. The enemy places painful traps we fall in. I am glad GOD’s purpose of spreading JESUS to all supersedes the pain I go through.

Challenge

  • What is the writer “happy” about?
  • Have you ever sacrificed your time, talent or treasure for someone who was really in need so him or her could hear the message of JESUS clearly?
  • It may not be easy, but will you look beyond your pain for a moment and know you are important to GOD and your suffering is there to help others see HIM today?

Participate Anyway

Participate Anyway

Galatians 4:17 Those other people show a deep interest in you, but their intentions are not good. All they want is to separate you from me, so that you will have the same interest in them as they have in you. 18 Now, it is good to have such a deep interest if the purpose is good—this is true always, and not merely when I am with you. 19 My dear children! Once again, just like a mother in childbirth, I feel the same kind of pain for you until Christ's nature is formed in you. 20 How I wish I were with you now, so that I could take a different attitude toward you. I am so worried about you!

============

After a long day I sat on the bus headed home. Traffic was thick so we creeped down the street. I looked out the window and saw people from my school taking an alternate route since the main one was filled. I could also see thugs waiting to rob them.

  • I felt there was nothing I could do.
  • I felt bad for the those who were about to be victimized.
  • I felt angry at those who were trying to take advantage of others for their own gain.

Paul expresses his deep concern for those who have turned away from the saving message of JESUS to follow other messages that provided temporary hope. Thieves desiring attention were busy trying to steal love versus living it. All Paul could do is be concerned from a distance. It seemed hopeless.

My Observations

  • When I see someone being wronged, I can ask GOD to intercede.
  • GOD lets me know that prayer is more powerful than thieves, even though it doesn’t feel that way in the moment.
  • Vengeance is for the LORD so my participation is for all people involved to receive HIS mercy.

It is painful to watch someone try to steal people’s hearts. I mean, those who are hurt try their best to keep other people hurt because misery loves company. BUT GOD holds the key to that situation.

It takes faith to let go of the obvious trap you can see someone walking into. GOD sees the heart of those who are being victimized and those who are being predators. HE hears your prayers even though you may have to participate from a distance. I am glad GOD intervenes and intercedes for those HE is bringing back to HIM.

Challenge

  • What “other people” is the writer speaking about?
  • Can you feel the writers pain and passion for everyone he spoke the gospel to?
  • If you see someone intentionally trying to hurt someone and you are not able to directly intervene, will you participate anyway by asking GOD for HIS protection and mercy?

The Grace Effect

The Grace Effect

1 Corinthians 15: Last of all he appeared also to me—even though I am like someone whose birth was abnormal. For I am the least of all the apostles—I do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God's church. 10 But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me was not without effect. On the contrary, I have worked harder than any of the other apostles, although it was not really my own doing, but God's grace working with me. 11 So then, whether it came from me or from them, this is what we all preach, and this is what you believe.

============

“I’m saved for eternity!” is the Good News I accepted at an early age. This came with a calling to tell other people about JESUS. But that did not stop me from wanting to sin. I wanted to fit in with everyone else, so I stopped being the “goody, goody” person and tried what “everyone else” was doing. It seemed like my sin would be caught and theirs wouldn’t. In fact, it seemed like I would get singled out and they would go free.

  • I had a misconception of grace.
  • I thought grace meant I was forgiven for my sins and I did not have to have consequence.
  • I was alright with just getting into heaven, so I figured I would live it up here and then I would be in heaven and I could live it up there.

JESUS met Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul was headed to murder more followers of JESUS. HE called Paul into ministry by blinding him. Paul had to suffer to tell people about JESUS. He was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, bitten by a snake and left to die. But GOD’s grace kept him working harder than the other Apostles.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to take my sin seriously.
  • GOD wants a real relationship with me and HE does not like sin.
  • GOD wants me to surrender my life to HIM and to confess my sin to HIM and accept the consequence of my sin.

Being a child of GOD is wonderful, but it ain’t easy. Yes I said “ain’t.” I mean, it seems like other people can act like scoundrels and do as they please while I try to do the right thing and face more suffering. To top it off, when I sin, it seems like GOD comes after me with a stick. Well, at least sometimes.

GOD’s grace extends into this life. The effect of HIS grace wipes away my eternal consequence, but let’s face it… If I did something harmful to another person, GOD will allow the consequence to sprout up from the seeds of sin I planted. Grace is still there, I just have to understand I am at GOD’s mercy which diminishes getting “my” way.

Challenge

  • What new observation about grace do you see in what is written?
  • What do you notice about being humble in this apostle’s words?
  • What misconceptions, if any, do you have about GOD’s grace?
  • Do you think sin can keep you blinded so you will not grow to have a true relationship with JESUS?

Okay, do your thing

Okay, do your thing

Romans 1: 26 Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. 27 In the same way the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other. Men do shameful things with each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing.

============

Thinking of another response I argued my point. The person, who was simply trying to give me advice said, “Okay, do your thing.” I kept on my path and ran into the problems he was trying to warn me about.

  • There were times when I did not listen.
  • There were times when I did what I wanted to do.
  • There were times when I followed my heart, but inside was something bad.

Paul explains there would be some people who explain away GOD so they can do what they want to do. By doing this, some people would accept a path that was not defined by GOD. Some women would choose unnatural sex acts and men would choose men for sex.

  • GOD wants me to ask “What do YOU want?”
  • GOD wants me to follow HIS way, especially when I don’t want to.
  • GOD wants me to understand that HE is the creator and knows the best way.

“Okay, do your thing” is a difficult sentence from GOD. I mean, HE has so much grace that HE allows me to sin as much as I want. The problem is, I can become so accustomed to the sin that I question HIS laws and HIS existence, simply because I do not like the rule. BUT GOD still has compassion.

HE allows anyone who believes in JESUS to be saved, no matter how deep in sin the person is. HE looks at any sin as the same. Lies, racism and sex outside of HIS definition are equally abysmal to HIM. That’s why HE chose to die for me instead of punishing me. Anyone who believes in JESUS surrenders sin little by little. I am glad HE gives me chance after chance.

  • Are you arguing the existence of GOD because you do not like HIS rule?
  • Do you push HIS love away to do sex your way?
  • Will you believe in the truth, which is JESUS, and allow HIM to guide you to a life filled with purpose and abundance today?

Reasoning

Acts 17: When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said. Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

============

“This doesn’t make sense” I said. I was struggling to understand the concept and was stuck on a couple of minor details. When someone explained the concepts, without using technical terms, I understood what was being taught. I understood the reason we were doing what we were doing.

  • There are times when I don’t understand.
  • There are times when I get stuck on minor concepts.
  • There are times when I need someone to explain some things I get stuck on.

Paul reasoned with the people about JESUS for three weeks. He pointed out that the Messiah is JESUS, who had to suffer and rise from the dead. After appealing to their logic, many people believed. Paul was able to explain JESUS well enough that people sought HIM.

  • GOD wants me to logically believe in HIM.
  • GOD wants me to understand HIS love for me.
  • GOD wants me to be able to explain who JESUS is.

Talking about JESUS can be an emotional subject. I mean HE is pure love and showed me compassion. But there is a logical side to GOD. HE created humans with free will to choose HIM or not. It took me a while to grasp the logic behind HIS creation.

While I don’t fully understand everything GOD does, HE supplies me with faith to hop over the gaps in knowledge. Faith is logical and I reason to believe in JESUS.

  • Are you reasoning GOD out of your life?
  • Do you look at things logically without seeing GOD in everything?
  • Will you use your reasoning to understand GOD’s love for you as you seek a better understanding by reading about JESUS in HIS word?

Use Good Examples

Acts 13: 16 Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He brought them out of it. 18 Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness. 19 And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them by allotment.

============

After studying the material over and over, I felt prepared. I was ready for any question they could ask about the material. Since this was the first class I had ever taught of this nature, I was paired up with a seasoned instructor.

About an hour into the lesson, of the five day course, someone said “Can you give us examples?” I could not because I had not experienced what I was teaching. It was a long week.

  • When I go through problems I usually want them to be done.
  • When I go through problems I pray extra hard, hoping the problem will end soon.
  • When I go through problems I cannot see the lesson I am learning because the solution has not arrived yet.

Paul used his hands to demonstrate how GOD worked through Moses to bring hurt people out from under those who had enslaved them. He then summarized a large portion of history to set up the example that was created specifically for a group who could understand it.

  • GOD wants me to use the problems He delivered me from as examples of HIS power.
  • GOD wants me to speak about what HE has done in my life so others can believe.
  • GOD wants me to see problems as opportunities to be used by GOD in a greater way than I had ever thought.

When I hear the words “In all your ways acknowledge HIM” I hear that it doesn’t always mean the good stuff. I have to acknowledge, problems do happen and while I don’t like them, they are necessary. When GOD delivers me, I can use the problem to encourage someone.

But what about problems that do not seem to go away or keep popping up? GOD helps me with those too. HE uses my praise when I am hurting to bless others around me. I may not be lifted up during a problem, but I can have peace knowing others will. I am glad GOD has given me examples to give to others.

  • Are you going through something?
  • Do you feel like the problem is lasting forever?
  • Will you tell the person who is depending on you that “GOD is great and HE loves you” in spite of what is going on?

Adversity Cheer

Acts 5: 40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

============

“You” the chooser said as they pointed at me. I could not believe it. I was chosen early to participate by the star. The game required a lot of running and catching people and I was scrawny. “Go” someone shouted to start the festivities.

I caught someone immediately but this person was pretty strong and flung me to the asphalt. I hit my head and started bleeding, a little. I got up and my teammates cheered. Wanting to cry, I grimaced and then smiled. What a delightful game.

  • Some pain doesn’t feel as painful when I am on the right side.
  • Some pain feels worth it when I am on the winning side.
  • Some pain seems like it will not go away, but bearable because I’m on the side that has the glory.

The church leaders had the apostles beaten thinking this would discourage them. But something very different happened. The apostles cheered, rejoicing they were associated with CHRIST and worthy of suffering because of HIM. They knew everything JESUS said would come true.

  • GOD wants me to know HE loves me dearly.
  • GOD wants me to understand that adversity comes from the enemy, who tries to make me blame GOD.
  • GOD wants me to use wisdom and face adversity with cheer, knowing JESUS has already won.

Being beaten feels horrible. In fact, all pain is not welcome. BUT GOD shows me a different way to look at some pain. When the pain is caused because I am standing firm for JESUS, it feels more like honor. It almost feels like GOD is cheering when I get back up and not blame HIM but rejoice that I went through a little of what JESUS went through.

GOD wants my comfort. HE sent the COMFORTER to live inside of me. HE also knows there is a real and active spiritual battle that happens daily. JESUS has already won the war. I am grateful to be in the battles that are HIS.

  • Are you going through something?
  • Do you feel like you have been beat up because of your belief in JESUS?
  • It may be hard, but will you rejoice, knowing GOD sees you and hears you and is cheering because you got back up and stood firm for HIM?

Part of something bigger

John 11: Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”

When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

============

“Five A.M.?” I questioned. I failed to see the purpose of getting up that early to run, so I did not join the college track team. “Weekly meetings?” I questioned. I wanted a bit more relaxation in my life so I did not join a group to accelerate promotions in the company. I mean, I was already driving over an hour just to get to entry level position.

  • Many times I question something that seems painful to me.
  • Many times I weigh the pain against the benefits to determine if “this” is useful.
  • Many times I use my limited experiences to question what is going on around me.

Lazarus was extremely sick. Mary and Martha sent for JESUS, knowing HE could heal him. Lazarus was a close friend of JESUS so why did he have to become sick in the first place? The entire family “believed” HE was and is GOD, so why the calamity?

  • JESUS says to me “You are part of something bigger when you believe in ME.”
  • JESUS says to me “These things have to happen so I may be glorified through it.”
  • JESUS says to me “Do not grow weary, for your suffering leads to perseverance.”

Questioning GOD’s motive and reason for pain is quite natural. Unfortunately, sometimes I think GOD is a sadistic scientist, using humans as lab rats to see the outcome. BUT GOD forgives my loathsome thinking. HE opens my eyes to HIS love, generosity and mercy towards me.

HE knows HIS fight is not against me, but against the deceiver. HE threw Satan to this earth and cursed the planet, and everything on it, and around it. This was a policy that could not be taken back. HE then died for my sins, just to redeem me. I am now part of the redemption story.

  • How do you view GOD?
  • Do you feel you cannot trust HIM because you do not see how HE can handle your situation?
  • Will you stop looking through human lenses and let GOD handle your situation so HE may be glorified?

What is the purpose?

John 9:When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?”

Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.”

He said, “I am he.

10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11 He answered and said, “A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.”

12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?”

He said, “I do not know.”

============

“That’s it! I’ve had enough!” I exclaimed. Problems had multiplied and I was alone. Having nowhere to turn, I decided to get on my knees and pray. It had been a while, but I did not know what to do. Before I prayed, I recalled my own words. “What’s the purpose of going to church?” Then I remembered incriminating the hypocrites who taught and preached. I wasn’t worshiping GOD.

  • There was a time when I questioned the power of GOD.
  • There was a time when I dared GOD to do HIS worst to me.
  • There was a time when I doubted GOD’s love for me and power over my life.

JESUS spat on the ground and made clay to put over the blind man’s eyes. HE then “sent” him to the pool named “Sent” to wash off the clay. The blind man did so and was healed. But why the theatrics? Couldn’t JESUS just touch him and heal him? Yes, but there was a purpose.

  • JESUS wants me to know there is a purpose for everything that I go through.
  • JESUS wants me to understand that there is a reason I go through problems.
  • JESUS wants me to acknowledge HIS power and seek HIM for the rest of my life.

Nowadays we label things as “birth defects.” BUT GOD may label it as a showing of HIS power. HE healed one person and thousands, if not millions, believed in HIS power. We still read this story today and get hope.

JESUS had a purpose for this person being healed after decades of living with the problem. HE could show everyone that HE is in control of physical ailments and long lasting problems. HE gave the town hope. I place my hope in JESUS.

  • Are you questioning GOD?
  • Do you question the “purpose” of HIS decisions?
  • Will you stop doubting GOD based on your little knowledge of HIM and ask HIM to grow your faith so you can trust HIM more and more?
