Effective Forever

Effective Forever

Hebrews 10: 11 Every Jewish priest performs his services every day and offers the same sacrifices many times; but these sacrifices can never take away sins. 12 Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins, an offering that is effective forever, and then he sat down at the right side of God. 13 There he now waits until God puts his enemies as a footstool under his feet. 14 With one sacrifice, then, he has made perfect forever those who are purified from sin.

============

Rummaging through my parents garage, I found the perfect piece of wood to “repair” the seat of my car that would no longer stay upright. I figured I could shove this piece of wood in-between the upper and lower parts of the seat to keep the passenger from falling backwards. It worked! That is, until I hit a bump.

  • My solution was temporary.
  • My solution worked under certain conditions.
  • My solution was not really a solution.

Paul, the assumed writer, spoke about the futility of the services of the priests. They would perform sacrifices that were symbolic and could never truly remove sins. People depended on this ritual with their lives, but it was ineffective.

My Observations:

  • What JESUS did was effective forever.
  • JESUS repaired the relationship between humans and GOD forever.
  • GOD will one day put the enemy of sin under JESUS feet where it will do me no harm forever.

Satan’s pride of trying to be GOD caused major problems. I mean, he tried to tempt the first humans, Adam and Eve, into sinning. He enraged the Living GOD to the point where the earth was cursed and humans would struggle through life. BUT JESUS volunteered to do something about it.

HE sacrificed HIMSELF as the permanent solution. Sin no longer has the same effect of ripping me away from GOD forever. JESUS made it so I could be forgiven for my sins and to have a perfect loving relationship with HIM forever. I am glad JESUS’ solution was powerful enough to save me forever.

Challenge

  • Can you sense the futility from the writer?
  • Have you tried to please GOD by following the rules harder?
  • Do you think GOD is harsh, mean and stubborn?
  • Will you ask GOD to renew your mind and look at HIM in a different, caring and loving way today?

Trying Too Hard

Trying Too Hard

Hebrews 8:If there had been nothing wrong with the first covenant, there would have been no need for a second one. But God finds fault with his people when he says,

“The days are coming, says the Lord,
when I will draw up a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors

on the day I took them by the hand and led them out of Egypt.
They were not faithful to the covenant I made with them,
and so I paid no attention to them.
10 Now, this is the covenant that I will make with the people of Israel

in the days to come, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
11 None of them will have to teach their friends

    or tell their neighbors,
    ‘Know the Lord.’
For they will all know me,
from the least to the greatest.
12 I will forgive their sins

and will no longer remember their wrongs.”

13 By speaking of a new covenant, God has made the first one old; and anything that becomes old and worn out will soon disappear.

============

“Don’t set your alarm, but ask GOD to wake you up” were the instructions of someone who was well meaning. I tried it and overslept. After this exercise I questioned GOD. “Why didn’t you wake me up?”

  • I wanted to see if this GOD thing would work.
  • I wanted to test whether or not GOD would do “as I say?”
  • I wanted to have special powers that I didn’t possess.

Paul, the assumed writer, says some remarkable things about what GOD did for humanity. He mentions that GOD took care of the relationship that was broken and lost by a permanent repair through a second covenant.

My Observations:

  • GOD did not leave anything up to chance when it came to having a relationship with me.
  • GOD placed HIS laws in my mind and wrote them on my heart.
  • GOD made me “know the LORD” and has forgiven me of my sins and does not remember any wrong I did.

It was all GOD! I mean, HE knew that I would not choose HIM, yet HE chose me. HE took it one step further. HE wrote HIS laws in my mind and in my heart. I do not have the responsibility to try to convince someone to “know the LORD.” But this seems confusing. What about the great commission?

You and I are part of the “I will.” HE never says how HE will put the laws in the minds of people or how HE will be their GOD. I am glad HE uses people to tell the Good News!

Challenge

  • What words from the writer are shocking to you?
  • Do you feel relieved that you do not have the responsibility of forcing people to accept JESUS?
  • Will you simply “be” a follower of JESUS and be ready to explain your relationship with HIM to anyone HE places in front of you today?

Raised From Exhaustion

Raised From Exhaustion

Philippians 3: Not only those things; I reckon everything as complete loss for the sake of what is so much more valuable, the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have thrown everything away; I consider it all as mere garbage, so that I may gain Christ and be completely united with him. I no longer have a righteousness of my own, the kind that is gained by obeying the Law. I now have the righteousness that is given through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith. 10 All I want is to know Christ and to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings and become like him in his death, 11 in the hope that I myself will be raised from death to life.

============

After running out of gas again, I vowed to keep a couple of gallons in the tank. Being on the side of the road without gas was frustrating! I woke up, needing to be someplace; jumped in the jalopy of a car and it would not start. The battery was dead. “Ugh! I just got gas!”

  • Just when I thought I did everything right, something else went wrong.
  • “When will it all come together for me?” was my cry in disappointment.
  • I had lost hope and was exhausted because there were too many things “I” needed to fix.

“Achievement” and “Self-Righteousness” were attitudes Paul addressed. Following the Law to the letter was something he no longer wished to “achieve.” GOD had opened his eyes to the fact that he had become “self-righteous” and was persecuting those who sought JESUS. He looked at his actions as a loss.

My Observations

  • JESUS is my only true salvation.
  • Believing that I can change GOD’s mind by acting good for a short period of time, causes me to be exhausted.
  • Connecting my “dead battery” of trying too hard to the power of JESUS’ resurrection gives me endless hope that cannot be exhausted.

Running on empty could mean I was trying too hard to please GOD. I mean, JESUS died for me, was raised from the dead and sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me. I had nothing to do with that. I should praise HIM continually, but I find a way to attempt to control GOD so everything will go “my” way.

When “bad” things happen, I try to do the Law “better.” BUT GOD sees through this filthy righteousness. All HE wants me to do is to place my faith in JESUS. I am glad I can place my hope in HIS resurrection and look forward to being with HIM eternally.

Challenge

  • What does the writer consider a complete loss?
  • Have you ever thought you were doing things perfectly and still not pleasing GOD?
  • Have you ever tried to convince GOD that you deserve better because you sinned less last week?
  • Will you place your full hope in JESUS and allow HIM to guide you through life without needing to achieve HIS love that HE already has for you?

What Matters

What Matters

Galatians 5: Listen! I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, it means that Christ is of no use to you at all. Once more I warn any man who allows himself to be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the whole Law. Those of you who try to be put right with God by obeying the Law have cut yourselves off from Christ. You are outside God's grace. As for us, our hope is that God will put us right with him; and this is what we wait for by the power of God's Spirit working through our faith. For when we are in union with Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor the lack of it makes any difference at all; what matters is faith that works through love.

============

One more thing went wrong that day. “LORD, what!?” was my frustrated cry. “Aren’t I doing enough? I’m trying to live right and it seems like those who easily do wrong are getting ahead in life!”  When I calmed down, the situation remained the same but I could quiet down to listen to GOD.

  • I thought I could live right to make everything go “”my” way.
  • I was doing “good” for me versus serving GOD.
  • I wanted something from the “deal” with GOD instead of simply living as HE wants.

Paul urges the Gentiles not to half-follow the Law by picking and choosing certain parts in efforts to feel closer to GOD. He warns everyone that by trying to depend on the Law to measure how “good” one can be brings judgment of the whole Law rather than freedom.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to see that HIS grace is what saved me.
  • GOD wants me to recognize that there is nothing in me that is worthy of HIS grace.
  • GOD wants me to accept HIS wonderful gift, which is HIS only SON.

When things go wrong, the HOLY SPIRIT is there to pick me up. I mean, because I believe that JESUS died to save me eternally, HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me and anyone else who believes. Comfort, guidance, discernment and peace is what is given to all who believe.

Unfortunately there is a war inside me that tries to take over the situation, causing me to doubt GOD’s true love. I think “I” have to do something rather than simply having faith in HIS ways. I am glad JESUS forgives me for those weak moments and restores my faith in HIM.

Challenge

  • What do you think was going on with this group of people?
  • What does it mean to be “put right” with GOD?
  • Will you seek unity with CHRIST through faith versus trying to be “good” enough to please GOD who is already pleased with you?

Worn Out

Worn Out

Romans 9: 30 So we say that the Gentiles, who were not trying to put themselves right with God, were put right with him through faith; 31 while God's people, who were seeking a law that would put them right with God, did not find it. 32 And why not? Because they did not depend on faith but on what they did. And so they stumbled over the “stumbling stone” 33 that the scripture speaks of:

“Look, I place in Zion a stone
    that will make people stumble,
a rock that will make them fall.
But whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”

============

Desiring to move up, I applied for position after position. I did not get each them. I decided that my problem was possibly my work ethic. One day, I stayed at work overnight. I worked for 36 straight hours trying to help the company keep a contract that was slipping away. The company did not get the contract and I still did not get promoted.

  • There have been times when I worked very hard and got nothing.
  • There have been times when I depended on my strength and could not make it happen.
  • There have been times when I tried to do everything right, but it was not enough.

Paul writes about something very peculiar. He mentions that the Gentiles, who were not even trying, were put right with GOD though faith. Meanwhile, the people GOD chose to be born through decided JESUS was not enough and they wanted people to focus on the law, wearing themselves out. They stumbled over the ROCK.

  • GOD wants me to have total faith in HIM.
  • GOD wants me to watch HIM work things out.
  • GOD wants me to believe in JESUS who is the cornerstone that makes people stumble.

Belief in JESUS is all that is needed. It seems so simple. In fact, it seems too simple. “What’s the catch?” I ask. I mean, don’t I have to try hard to win GOD’s love? No! GOD loved me so much that HE gave HIS one and only SON to die in my place and when I believed in HIS resurrection, I will no longer perish but have everlasting life.

Trying to win GOD over by showing up to weekly gatherings and giving some money and following the rules diminishes what GOD did. HE saved the world! HE said, “It is finished” meaning, there is nothing more to do.

The harder I try, the more I don’t rely. HE simply wants me to believe and be so excited that I will tell others and they will believe. HE is the one who controls all circumstances. I place my trust in JESUS and I have never been disappointed.

  • Are you worn out?
  • Do you feel you need to try harder to win GOD’s love?
  • Are you looking at your circumstance, thinking GOD must not love you?
  • Will you place your faith in JESUS and keep trusting that HE is the one who loves you will not disappoint you.

Trying Too Hard

Trying Too Hard

Romans 3: 27 What, then, can we boast about? Nothing! And what is the reason for this? Is it that we obey the Law? No, but that we believe. 28 For we conclude that a person is put right with God only through faith, and not by doing what the Law commands. 29 Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles also? Of course he is. 30 God is one, and he will put the Jews right with himself on the basis of their faith, and will put the Gentiles right through their faith. 31 Does this mean that by this faith we do away with the Law? No, not at all; instead, we uphold the Law.

============

When they announced I got the position, I could not believe it. Many disappointments had happened before, so I decided to keep doing my old job. I showed up at a meeting and the attendees were puzzled but cordial. I was doing two jobs at once, my old job and the new. I had to be sure.

There were times when I was insecure so I held onto things I should have let go of.

There were times when I did not believe so I worked a little harder to “see” results.

There were times when I was given something and had been hurt once too often so I accepted the gift with caution.

Paul concludes his discussion about how we are “put right” with GOD. He refutes those who try hard to follow the letter of the Law but fail to see the heart of the Law. He states that every human, Jew or Gentile, has the same requirement, namely to believe.

GOD wants me to have faith that HE took care of all my sins.

GOD wants me to have faith versus trying harder to please HIM.

GOD wants me to have faith in JESUS so HE will give me the HOLY SPIRIT who will guide me to joyfully follow the Law.

Doing right does not save me eternally. Only belief in JESUS does that. But there are times when things go wrong that scare me straight. I then try hard to “please” GOD by quitting certain sins temporarily. GOD sees through the ploy and forgives me for trying to manipulate HIM.

GOD wants my whole heart, not just the scared one. HE wants me to praise HIM when things are going well and when they are not. HE desires that I choose to follow HIM versus being coerced. “MY yoke is easy and MY burden is light” HE says to me. I am grateful GOD has taken care of everything so I can rest in HIM.

Are you scared?

Are you trying hard to make GOD do something and missing out on praising HIM for what HE is doing?

Will you praise GOD for what HE has done and is doing in your life and turn away from your complaining spirit today?

One Sided Relationship

John 6: 28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

============

When I heard the complaint, I started doing an assessment. “Wait a minute” I said to myself. “Didn’t I do all the work?” I mean I looked at all the planning, hard work and late nights I had put into the effort. I even counted every dollar that came out of “my” pocket.

  • One sided relationships make me count what “I” am doing.
  • One sided relationships make me feel like “I” am being used.
  • One sided relationships make me raise “my” expectation that the other person or people should be doing the same.

“What works should we be doing to please GOD?” was the gist of the question the people asked. They had been miraculously fed by JESUS but told not to seek food alone. Immediately their enterprising minds went towards something tangible. They could see and measure “work” so they wanted to be told what to “do” so they could just do it. But GOD had something else in mind.

  • GOD wants me to believe that HE took care of all my sins.
  • GOD wants me to believe that HE takes care of all my situations.
  • GOD wants me to believe that HE is with me every day, especially during the more difficult ones.

Air, water, food, shelter, and clothing all come from GOD. HE gives me talents and creates scenarios for me to use them to bring people to HIM. HE plans, does all the work and spends all that HE has on me. HE loved me so much that HE gave HIS only begotten SON.

Never once does HE say “Wait a minute, I gave you that meal you ate, the car you drove and clothes you are wearing.” HE does say “Love and believe in MY SON.” That’s it. This one sided relationship is totally in my benefit. All I have to do is believe and trust in JESUS. I place my faith in HIM.

  • Are you questioning GOD’s love?
  • Do you think you need to sin less or do more so you can be closer to GOD?
  • Will you stop trying to control GOD and allow HIM to work through you simply by trusting JESUS today?

Driven Achievement

Luke 18: 18 A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’

19 ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good – except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.”

21 ‘All these I have kept since I was a boy,’ he said.

============

“How do I become successful?” I asked a mentor, thinking he would impart some great words of wisdom. “Be early to every meeting” were the only words given to me. “What? This is a lesson on punctuality!?” I skeptically tried the suggestion and I found out he was right.

  • There were times when I wanted to succeed.
  • There were times when I wanted to get ahead.
  • There were times when I desired to climb to the top.

JESUS is met by a rich man who may have been driven by achievements. The rich man used flattering words to put people at ease and called JESUS “good.” JESUS quickly sees through the flattery and says “Good is reserved only for GOD.” This confuses the achievement driven person.

  • GOD says to me “I AM GOD alone.”
  • GOD says to me “Your righteousness is like soiled diapers.”
  • GOD says to me “Humble yourself. The first will be last and the last shall be first.”

GOD is a relationship, not an achievement. HE wants me to want to do the things HE says, not muscle through a set of rules that are sometime quite impossible to keep. GOD knows I need HIM and HE has given me grace beyond measure.

HE also knows that if I base our relationship on how “good” I think I am, I will set HIM up for failure. I can never be good enough to demand GOD to bow down to my desires. HE simply wants to know me and have me seek HIM as my GOD. I am glad I do not have to achieve HIM. HE is always with me.

  • Do you look at GOD like HE wants you to “achieve” HIM?
  • Are you exhausted thinking HE doesn’t love you because of some sin you recently did?
  • Can you stop thinking of GOD negatively and simply have a loving relationship with HIM?

Easy to Believe

Luke 11: 45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”

46 And He said, “Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

52 “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”

53 And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.

============

“All you need to do is believe that JESUS died for your sins and is raised from the dead” someone told me. It was very exciting to hear. I was so excited that I wanted to do more. I read about GOD, sang about HIM and attended gatherings about HIM regularly.

But when it was my turn to tell someone about HIM I gave them my list. “Go to church, give when it hurts, stop sinning and study only the Bible.”

  • There were times when I added hurdles to getting to GOD.
  • There were times when I added steps to getting to GOD.
  • There were times when I had people do things I could not even accomplish.

JESUS blasts the lawyers of the church for holding people to a standard they could not keep. HE saw through their controlling methods that forced people to look at GOD as impossible to please. HE said the blood of the prophets will fall on those who hinder the kingdom.

  • GOD wants me to know that a relationship with GOD is “free” in spite of what blind greedy people will say.
  • GOD wants me to know HE took care of everything in spite of the messages that make people “try harder.”
  • GOD wants me to know that HIS power is permanent in spite of my thoughts that my sin is greater than HIS grace.

Adding burdens to JESUS’s salvation is probably one of the largest crimes GOD will remember. HE wants me to give a simple message that HE loves HIS creation and the worthiness of the relationship comes from HIM. Since HE said “MY grace is sufficient” then is all I need.

  • What burdens are you putting on others in order for them to “believe” in GOD?
  • Do you think your rigor is a standard for which others should meet?
  • Can you stop adding “your” burdens on others and give them a simple message of HIS love today?

Nothing to Give

Luke 7: 40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

============

“Would you like a dining room set?” one family said to me. “Um, sure” I said to them. I went to their luxurious home and they had an extra dining room set with all the furniture I could imagine. “I don’t have anything to repay you” were the first words out of my mouth. “Just take it” they said.

  • There were times when I felt bad because I had nothing to give.
  • There were times when I had more needs than resources.
  • There were times when I wanted to be a blessing to people but needed to be the recipient of blessing.

JESUS points out the flaw in humans thinking they have it all together. The Pharisee invited JESUS to his house and overlooked the need for hospitality. He did not give JESUS anything. The woman had nothing to give JESUS in return for her forgiveness. She could only offer tears and some expensive oil. She tried to give JESUS something and HE loved it.

  • JESUS wants me to know I cannot repay HIM.
  • JESUS wants me to know I owe HIM everything.
  • JESUS wants me to know that if I serve the poor and hurt, I have served HIM.

I can never repay JESUS for forgiving me of my overt sins. HE sits right there and watches me do exactly what HE tells me not to do and then turns right around and forgives me.. All I can give HIM is my praise and desire to be like HIM. HE accepts my offering and loves me for trying.

  • Do you feel you have to try harder to please GOD?
  • Are you burnt out, thinking GOD is demanding more from you?
  • Can you stop thinking GOD provides blessings based on your actions and simply believe HE loves you?

Truth of Being Good

Mark 14: 27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:
‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’

28 “But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”

29 Peter said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be.

30 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”

31 But he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
And they all said likewise.

============

Giving up the clubbing lifestyle was pretty drastic for me. With my renewed faith, I vowed to leave the “hanging out” scene alone. Weeks passed and I was doing pretty good then one person asked, “Do you want to come out with us?” I was single and there were going to be a bunch of women and booze there. “Yes!” I answered, knowing the crowd.

  • There have been times I have tried to be good and failed.
  • There have been times when I told GOD, “I am not going to ever do ‘that’ again” and did “that” hours later.
  • There have been times when I hid my relationship with CHRIST.

JESUS points out the main reason HE became a human, namely to die for our sins. HE tells the disciples that they would deny HIM just like everyone in the world. HE knew the poison racing through their veins causes every human to sin and there was no exception.

  • GOD says to me “I know your ways and I forgive you.”
  • GOD says to me “I understand how you were made and I love you.”
  • GOD says to me “I know the struggles you go through and I have a wonderful plan for you, plans to grow you for the good of the kingdom.”

In the middle of my sin CHRIST died for me. HE doesn’t stop me from sinning rather HE allows me to go right ahead and sin my brains out and turns right around and says “you are forgiven.” HE then draws me to HIM rather than pushing me away. HE comforts me when I do not deserve comforting and heals me when I make the wounds. My good can never match HIS love for me.

  • Do you think you are good?
  • Do you beat yourself up for your good being faulty?
  • Can you stop thinking you goodness can save you and look to CHRIST who has truly taken care of it all for you?

Simple Things

Matthew 25: 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

============

After minutes of belief in CHRIST, I ran into a snag. “LORD what do YOU want me to do?” was my question. Years later, after walking away and returning to serving, I thought things would be easier, but they weren’t. “LORD what do YOU want me to do?” was my cry again.

After serving the rich, powerful and aloof, I decided to follow GOD a little more and was let go. “For real LORD, what do YOU want me to do?”

  • Sometimes I question GOD because I am not getting my way.
  • Sometimes I question GOD because I thought things would be easier when I chose HIM.
  • Sometimes I question GOD because I expect good things to happen and then something bad hits me in the face.

“What do YOU want me to do?” was more of a complaint versus a question. I could have really said “What do YOU want me to do NOW?” as if to say, I am tired of not getting my way. Sometimes I work really hard to please GOD when HE wants the simple things.

  • I feed JESUS when I feed those who are hungry and outcast.
  • I quench JESUS’s thirst when I give those who are thirsty a nice drink.
  • I provide JESUS shelter when I invite people into my home and give them clothes.

JESUS gives me instructions for how to live. It is the simple things that please HIM. I don’t have to be wealthy or smart or accepted by those in power to serve JESUS. I don’t have to coerce or trick people, I just simply have to serve people because JESUS wants me to. It is the simple things that please GOD.

  • Do you think you have to work hard to please GOD?
  • Are you tired of not getting your way?
  • Can you stop trying so hard to get your way and do something simple by serving someone today?

Nothing Else Needed

Matthew 17: When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

“Salvation is free, all you need to do is believe” I was told, so I did. I believed that I was saved from an eternal state of hell. “What a relief!” I thought to myself. But as time went on, problems arose. Maybe my salvation came a little too easy. “I better try to be saved a little harder by not sinning as much” I thought to myself.

  • Sometimes I try to supplement what JESUS has already done.
  • Sometimes I put up rules to make me feel saved by accomplishments.
  • Sometimes I tell GOD “Look at what I have done” as if to say “I deserve salvation.”

GOD made salvation so easy that all I need to do is believe in HIS position, power and my problem of sin. It is that simple. But over time I thought salvation meant doing a whole bunch of stuff that seemed righteous in order to “remain” saved. I became exhausted!

  • GOD’s salvation of me is permanent.
  • GOD’s declaration that I am saved is final.
  • GOD’s decree of my salvation is everlastingly written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

“No one can pluck you from MY hand” is what GOD says to me, not even myself. GOD’s declarations are eternal. I do not have to wait on anything else to happen. JESUS has already been raised from the dead. My belief in HIM through the measure of faith HE has provided me is all I need.

  • Do you feel that following GOD is difficult?
  • Do you try really hard to please GOD but feel like a failure?
  • Can you stop thinking so lowly of GOD and allow HIM to love you and protect you the way HE wants to?

Exhausted Trying to Please

Micah 6: He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.

============

Figuring out what the boss wanted was a puzzle and I was losing sleep. I would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about work so I would jump out of bed, labor for a couple of hours then fall asleep for the remaining fifteen or twenty minutes before the alarm. I would then try to present my work only to be brushed off to do more laborious tasks. “What does he want?” I would exclaim!

  • Sometimes I get exhausted trying to please others.
  • Sometimes I get weary trying to guess at what others want from me.
  • Sometimes I get fatigued trying so hard to get things right that I lose sleep and feel even more tired!

“What do YOU want from me?” is an expression I have also used on GOD. I mean when I wasn’t getting my way I would try to do what GOD wanted me to do in a measured way. I would pray more, give more and show up to church more. I would even reduce my sins for good measure.

Then when I did not get my way, I would tell the LORD the list of things I had done so HE could eventually relent on holding back from my long past due rewards. I would then ask again “What do YOU want from me?”

  • GOD says to me “I want you to act justly to MY people.”
  • GOD says to me “I want you to love the mercy I have shown you.”
  • GOD says to me “I want you to walk humbly with ME, your GOD.”

CHRIST walked the earth showing me how life really should be done. HE set the example by showing even HIS enemy’s compassion. HE expressed HIS unfailing love in an extreme gentle way. The problem is sometimes the things I want may not be part of HIS plans. In fact they may conflict with HIM.

Any time I am anxious, nervous and afraid I must ask myself “Am I fighting GOD or serving HIM? GOD is not hard to please. HE was so pleased that HE became a human to die in my place. HE simply wants me to look at HIS example and follow them daily. That’s all.

  • Are you exhausted trying to please others?
  • Are you exhausted trying to please GOD?
  • Can you stop “trying” so hard and just “be” the person GOD wants you to be?
  • Will you stop downing yourself and others around you so you can add praise back into your life?

There is Life Where the River Flows

Ezekiel 47: Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.

============

“Pop” was the sound my laptop made as I opened it up to my dismay. The left side of the casing was broken and the hinge seemed strained. I thought to myself “I better get this fixed.” I mean this machine was too important to me. After the repair I noticed sparks coming from the shoddy workmanship. I took apart the repair and noticed the laptop was working fine anyway. I was actually causing more problems with the repair.

  • Sometimes I try to fix stuff that “I” think is broken.
  • Sometimes I try to fix stuff under “my” own power.
  • Sometimes I try to fix stuff that should not be “fixed” rather it was alright in the first place.

It seems like the more I try to fix stuff the messier they become, especially when the stuff is people. I may think something is wrong with “that” person when the truth is GOD is using them for a special mission that only HE knows about, but what about situations? Shouldn’t I try to fix broken circumstances?

  • GOD says to me “Let ME flow like a river and you will see MY power.”
  • GOD says to me “Allow ME to handle your situations while you receive rest.”
  • GOD says to me “Be not troubled for I AM with you,”

Before I rush out and “fix” the situation I must trust in the LORD to guide me to where HE wants me involved. Sometimes GOD wants me to do something so HE can build my faith, other times HE wants me to stand back otherwise HIS river would become too deep and I would drown in the torrent. Letting GOD flow is the best way to receive peace.

  • Are you waiting on something?
  • Do you feel stuck because you have tried and tried over and over?
  • Can you stop worrying and allow GOD’s power to flow like a river through your circumstance?
  • Will you trust in GOD today?

Bargaining for the Right Terms

Jeremiah 11: Tell them that this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Cursed is the one who does not obey the terms of this covenant— the terms I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the iron-smelting furnace.’ I said, ‘Obey me and do everything I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God. Then I will fulfill the oath I swore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey’—the land you possess today.”
I answered, “Amen, Lord.”

============

Negotiating had become a skill. As a contract was placed in front of me, I could quickly assess where the terms and conditions could change or be removed completely. In a shrewd way I gained popularity. When problems hit, I turned this perceptive methodology on GOD. “Didn’t I serve YOU once ten years ago? Remember?”

  • There have been times when I tried to bargain for my terms with GOD.
  • There have been times that I told GOD how much “I” was doing for HIM.
  • There have been times I tried to negotiate with GOD, impress GOD or flatter HIM into looking over my sinful ways.

“Maybe GOD won’t see the sin I’m doing if I do stuff for HIM” was my attitude that I fooled myself into believing. GOD wasn’t buying it. HE wanted me to be naked in front of HIM and others.

  • GOD wants me to stop bargaining for myself and accept HIS path for me.
  • GOD wants me to stop scheming to get “my” way and learn to settle down and accept HIS way.
  • GOD wants me to stop complaining about where HE has me and praise HIM for what HE “is” doing for me.

Obedience seems like such a harsh word when I am pulling away. I mean why should I “obey” when I am not getting “my” way?  GOD gently tells me that I will get my way when I align it to “HIS way.” When I stop doing the evil in my heart and follow HIM, HE gives me all “the things” I need and desire. HE tells me I am already in the land of milk and honey so I should be a good steward of it while I can. I answered “Amen LORD.”

  • Are you bargaining with GOD?
  • Have you told GOD how “good” you have been?
  • Can you stop trying to manipulate HIM and serve HIM with all your heart?

Removing Obstacles

Isaiah 57: 14 And it will be said:
“Build up, build up, prepare the road!
Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”
15 For this is what the high and exalted One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
“I live in a high and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 I will not accuse them forever,
nor will I always be angry,
for then they would faint away because of me—
the very people I have created.

============

Sleep could not find me; rest hid its face as well. I tossed and turned trying to think of how to solve a problem at work and I just could not think of the answer. Suddenly I got the answer in the middle of the night. I was so excited that I got up and wrote down the answer. The next day I went into work only to find the rules had changed and another obstacle was put in place.

  • Many times I have faced obstacles.
  • Many times the road seemed impossible to travel.
  • Many times it seemed like giving up was the best option.

“Why try if ‘they’ are going to make up new rules on the fly?” I thought to myself. I mean sometimes the obstacles seem too large and come too often. Shouldn’t I just run and hide in a cave, never to talk to anyone again? I mean, why try?

  • GOD said to me “I will prepare your road for you.”
  • GOD said to me “I will remove the obstacles out of your way.”
  • GOD said to me “I will revive your spirit for MY sake. I know your sins and I will not accuse your of them forever.”

After the rules changed once too often, the leadership was removed and soon I had a group of people who seemed to be helpful rather than accusatory. I could thrive and the barriers were removed without me lifting a finger. GOD made me realize that I sometimes place barriers in the way of others and I should remove them as much as possible. In spite of being sinful, GOD blesses me anyway.

  • Are you facing obstacles?
  • Do you feel like giving up?
  • Can you stop being angry at GOD for a moment to notice HIS compassion?
  • Will you allow HIM to remove the obstacle in HIS time?
  • Can you be content with where HE has you until HE removes the barrier you are facing?

Bargaining with GOD

2 Chronicles 19:Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery.”

============

“I will NEVER do that again” were my words to GOD as I had just left “that” particular sin. I desired something so I tried to refrain from sinning to obtain my longings. I waited and waited and did not get my way in the time I wanted. I got angry at GOD. I mean, “what good is it to be ‘sinless’ if those who sin seem to get their way?”

  • Sometimes I think I can manipulate GOD by refraining from certain sins for a short period of time.
  • Sometimes I think GOD owes me something for being “good.”
  • Sometimes I think I can be “sinless” for any period of time.

One mistake I have made is thinking “I” can be sinless for a month or a week or even a day. I may give up specific blatant sins and commit others I am not aware of. My motive behind refraining from sin ends up “being” sin because I want my way.

  • GOD wants me to realize HE treats people I don’t like with love.
  • GOD wants me to understand I cannot change HIS mind with my sinfully motivated righteousness.
  • GOD wants me to know HE already loves me to HIS fullest so when I try to manipulate HIM to get my way, it’s saying to HIM. “I don’t trust YOU.”

‘I will do THIS again and again LORD, but only YOU can help me in my path” is a new thought. I will never ever be sinless while I am on this earth. JESUS knew that my birth was flawed with sin so HE took my death and placed it on HIM. HE wants me to open my eyes to show me HIS impartiality.

I have consequences and grace just like every human HE has ever created. That crazy boss or the thief who stole my tapes or the thugs who robbed me are all loved dearly in GOD’s eyes. HE has a plan for me that cannot be tarnished with my bribery. I need to trust that HIS plan for me is great.

  • Are you trying to bribe GOD?
  • Do you think you can manipulate GOD by being “good” for a period of time?
  • Can you trust GOD enough to let HIS great plan unfold in front of you?

Periods of Rest

1 Chronicles 23: 25 For David had said, “Since the Lord, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever, 26 the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service.”

============

With the crowd getting larger, it seemed like this place needed more organization. I implemented some software that would keep track of tithes, offerings and money for the building. Each Sunday I would park myself in the office and half way listen to the sermon on a speaker in the office.

Questions about administration soon led me to take work from the church home. I was the head of the deacons, head of the trustees, head of administration and headed towards going nuts. Is this what GOD had in mind?

  • Sometimes I get overloaded.
  • Sometimes I feel overwhelmed.
  • Sometimes I work to the point of exhaustion.

Volunteering is a wonderful thing but sometimes the volunteer activity needs to be scaled back to have moment of rest. GOD wants me to focus on HIM when HE calls me, but HE loves me so much that HE wants me to have rest.

  • GOD said to me “Come unto me all ye who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
  • GOD said to me “I lead you beside still waters.”
  • GOD said to me “Stand still and watch the power of the LORD.”

When I find myself trying too hard to please GOD it usually stems from fear or worry or doubt that HE is with me. It also means I really, really want something that GOD may have said “No” or “Wait” to. Don’t get me wrong… GOD wants me to be persistent an persevere in the battle of life, BUT HE also wants me to have periods of rest.

GOD cares for me so HE wants me to take a moment for myself so I will not get burnt out!

  • Are you working hard to please GOD?
  • Do you think HE is not pleased with you for some reason?
  • Can you stop thinking HE is a hard task master and allow yourself to take a break once in a while?
  • Can you look at service to the LORD as smaller periods of work AND rest?
