Live In

Live In

3 John 1:From the Elder—

To my dear Gaius, whom I truly love.

My dear friend, I pray that everything may go well with you and that you may be in good health—as I know you are well in spirit. I was so happy when some Christians arrived and told me how faithful you are to the truth—just as you always live in the truth. Nothing makes me happier than to hear that my children live in the truth.

============

“You have to eat specific foods” said the personal trainer at the gym. I wanted to get into heavy weightlifting and found myself unable to get beyond where I was at. People surrounded me and had me start over with technique, food and rest advice.

  • I knew what to do, but it was up to me to actually do something about it.
  • I had to change my lifestyle to be part of this new world to me.
  • I had to be presented with what to do so I could make the change.

John starts off his third letter with a greeting to Gaius. He had heard about the faith Gaius was showing. Gaius was living in “the truth.” John may have talked to him about CHRIST and heard word that Gaius was “living in the truth.”

My Observations:

  • JESUS is the Way “the Truth” and the Life, in which I can receive eternal life.
  • GOD wants me to love my neighbors versus complaining about them and HE wants me to love HIM more than anything I have.
  • Living in CHRIST provides me with all the protection that I need.

Knowing versus doing is a quandary we all face. I mean, GOD placed right from wrong inside all of us by writing HIS law on every heart, yet we choose not to follow HIS ways. BUT HE made a way back to HIM through JESUS.

By accepting CHRIST as my personal Savior, I can follow HIS ways without questioning them or fighting them. HE provides the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside my heart and to guide me  HE provides boundaries for me to live in and I am freed from the pressures of the world and can simply “be.” I gladly abide in what GOD has for me.

Challenge

  • Do you sense the love from the writer?
  • Have you ever known what was right to do, yet you did not or could not bring yourself to do it?
  • Will you seek JESUS by asking HIM, “How do YOU want me to live? And let the HOLY SPIRIT guide you to “live in” HIS ways today?

Permanent Experience

Permanent Experience

2 Peter 1: 10 So then, my friends, try even harder to make God's call and his choice of you a permanent experience; if you do so, you will never abandon your faith. 11 In this way you will be given the full right to enter the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

============

Not sure that I wanted to be part of the organization, I went to the first meeting with skepticism. I sat through the presentation and they said I would need to meet twice a month, at night and sometimes on weekends. I could not commit the time.

  • I wanted to simply be part of the organization without committing to it.
  • I wanted to use the name of the organization but did not want to do all the work they wanted me to do.
  • I wanted the temporary prestige of the organization without a permanent mindset.

Peter discussed something he failed at. He may have saw people wavering in their faith, so he provided a choice to follow GOD permanently or to stop faking it by being willing to abandon the faith. He denied JESUS and felt embarrassed. After JESUS restored Peter, he was able to preach about JESUS without abandoning his faith.

My Observations:

  • When GOD chose to save me, it was eternal.
  • GOD wants me to value my relationship with HIM and not be willing to leave HIM easily.
  • Roadblocks, obstacles and hurdles will appear in life, BUT GOD wants me to keep my faith focused on HIM.

Many times I felt like giving up. I mean, it seems like trouble comes at inconvenient times when I am not ready. People get sick and hurt, stuff breaks and bank accounts dry up seemingly all at the same time. The first thought is to sin my way out of the trouble, but then I would end up in a worse situation. GOD has another way.

HE wants me to follow the example JESUS set. JESUS did not waver in HIS faith. HE stayed focus on HIS mission to die for the sins of mankind. HE wants me to live my life the same way as HE did. I have a choice to remain faithful to GOD or abandon HIM and follow my own path. I gladly choose GOD over my own choices.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer tell everyone to “try harder?”
  • Have you ever felt like giving up because something did not happen in the time you expected?
  • Have you considered abandoning your faith in GOD because things aren’t going as you expected?
  • Will you consider making your relationship a “permanent experience” by letting go of this particular worry so you can praise GOD today?

Alive and Well

Alive and Well

James 2: 25 It was the same with the prostitute Rahab. She was put right with God through her actions, by welcoming the Israelite spies and helping them to escape by a different road.

26 So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead.

============

Feeling shamed from the weekend of drinking and carousing, I did not want to be around church people. I felt they would be judgmental and try to tell me more about what I was doing than the hidden things they were doing.

  • I did not want to be a hypocrite.
  • I was ashamed of my sins and simply wanted peace.
  • I tried to stay away from “perfect” people because I felt there was no help for me.

James used a shocking example of faith. He mentioned the prostitute Rahab was put right with GOD through her actions. He did not focus on her sin, rather on her faith in risking everything to hide the spies of Israel to help them escape. He concludes his warning by stating faith requires actions.

My Observations:

  • Sin may make me want to stay away from GOD, BUT JESUS forgave me of all of my sins.
  • Shame may try to stop me from doing what GOD wants me to do, BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT brings me comfort that I am redeemed.
  • Doubt may place uncertainty in my path, BUT THE FATHER gives me a firm foundation that keeps me sure that HE loves me.

Let’s face it, sin can be a barrier to doing what GOD wants me to do. I mean, when I get caught up in sin, I feel ashamed and start making up excuses for not serving GOD’s people. Blame arises and false statements about GOD’s love pop in my mind. BUT GOD brings me comfort.

In the middle of my sin, CHRIST died for me. Not after I stopped sinning, in the “middle.” JESUS was watching me and you sin and died for us anyway. HE didn’t wait for us to try to clean ourselves up or to become perfect. HE saw my imperfections and said “I love you.” HE then said “Go” I am glad GOD is the ultimate forgiver.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer used the label “prostitute” instead of simply mentioning her name?
  • Have you ever went through periods of trying not to sin and thought more highly of yourself?
  • Have you ever wanted to run away from GOD because of a certain sin?
  • Will you seek GOD’s kingdom, knowing HE loves you no matter what today?

Seeing Beyond

Seeing Beyond

Hebrews 11: 23 It was faith that made the parents of Moses hide him for three months after he was born. They saw that he was a beautiful child, and they were not afraid to disobey the king's order.

============

Opening the mailbox, I pulled out a stack of bills. “When will this ever end?” I said with a sigh. I had just enough to pay all of them, but I decided to go in with a few “friends” and throw  a party. After the party was over, everyone left and I still had the bills.

  • I had a moment of fun but now I was worried.
  • I had a time of pleasure but now I had to face my problem.
  • I had obligations but could not see beyond a moment of pleasure.

Paul, the assumed writer, gives another example of faith. He mentions the parents of Moses disobeying the king’s order to murder all children under a certain age. They hid Moses instead of following the decree and risked death in doing so. They did not get caught up in the moment.

My Observations:

  • Worries may cause me to make snap decisions, BUT GOD wants me to calm down to hear HIS voice.
  • Problems may cause me to want immediate ways to get relief, BUT GOD desires that I seek HIS solution.
  • Human situations may cause me to have pain, BUT GOD wants me to see beyond the pain and to know HE is in control.

Seeing beyond the pain is hard. I mean, who wants pain? Noone! But there is an enemy that wants me and you to experience enough pain to question GOD or even turn from HIS solution, namely JESUS as the Savior. Circumstance after circumstance, the devil wages war to make me discouraged. BUT GOD sees his attacks and steps in.

GOD whispers “Think beyond this circumstance” by telling me “Keep your eyes on ME.” When I look at GOD and take my eyes off of the circumstance, I can see hope, and love that I could not see when I looked at the problem. HE then resolves problems in HIS way and time. I am glad HE cares deeply for me and you.

Challenge

  • According to the writer, what act of faith was performed?
  • Have you ever had to stand on faith even when, seemingly, everyone around you was going in a different direction?
  • Will you ask GOD to fortify your faith in HIM so you can stand firm for HIM today?

Stick-to-itiveness

Stick-to-itiveness

Hebrews 11: It was faith that kept Enoch from dying. Instead, he was taken up to God, and nobody could find him, because God had taken him up. The scripture says that before Enoch was taken up, he had pleased God. No one can please God without faith, for whoever comes to God must have faith that God exists and rewards those who seek him.

============

Looking at the science book the night before the science fair, I chose something easy to do and three pages in. I had given up, but wanted to win the fair. I did not win. Later I joined a team. I practiced, but not to the fullest. I wanted to win but didn’t. I gave up.

  • I gave up many times.
  • I convinced myself, that I would not amount to anything.
  • I finally got tired of giving up and eventually stayed the course.

Paul, the assumed writer, gives another example of faith. He chose a strange, extraordinary example named Enoch, father of Methuselah. Twice it said “Enoch walked faithfully with GOD.” He never gave up.

My Observations:

  • Choosing to stay with GOD versus leaving HIM is the better way for me to go.
  • Making choices that align with HIS desire helps me navigate life when it gets difficult.
  • Staying with GOD makes me realize there is no other place to go.

Thinking that humans can develop a plan without GOD is the problem. I mean, HE should be involved with every aspect of our lives, yet there are many times when I want to try to do things without HIM. I then find myself in a world of trouble. If I get into too much trouble, I blame HIM, doubt HIM and leave HIM. BUT GOD provides faith.

HE solves issues and breathes life into our relationship. HE stays with me through tough times and never gives up on me. I had to finally decide if I was going to stay with HIM. I am glad HE increases my faith to stick to HIS plan for me.

Challenge

  • What was the reward mentioned by the writer, that Enoch received?
  • Have you ever felt like giving up on GOD?
  • Will you ask GOD for stronger faith so you will not try to leave HIM when times get difficult?

Obtaining the Invisible

Obtaining the Invisible

Hebrews 11: Now faith is the ]substance of things hoped for, the  evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

By faith we understand that the  worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

============

Driving uphill, I came to an intersection. I could not see the road in front of me because the incline was too steep. Thoughts ran through my mind. “What if there is no road in front of me?” A little fear set in and I hesitated for a while. I was a new driver.  A car came behind me, blew the horn and I was forced to make a decision to go. I went and was relieved there was a road.

  • Fear made me create a picture of something bad.
  • Doubt made me think something was wrong.
  • Uncertainty made me hesitate when I could have easily gone forward.

Paul, the assumed writer, had just told everyone to keep moving forward by saying “no turning back.” He then explains why… because you have to have faith. Now he gives the definition of what faith is.

My Observations:

  • GOD knows I cannot handle life’s decisions all at once, so HE shows me a little at a time.
  • GOD does not show me everything I will face, probably to protect me from fearing moving forward.
  • GOD knows the outcome of where HE is taking me and asks me to have faith.

Trusting GOD is hard sometimes. I mean, when it is hard to see how in the world is “this” going to come together or “this” be resolved, I start to get scared and look for ways to “see” my path forward. In may instances, GOD does not show me the path but says “Trust ME.”

I take a deep breath and step out into the unknown. The first step is the most scary one. The second is a relief because I am now on a path GOD has chosen. I am grateful, GOD wants to grow me up and does not show me everything so my faith will grow.

Challenge

  • What parts of the writer’s definition stick out to you?
  • When did you use faith and what was the outcome?
  • Will you place your faith in GOD so HIS plan can be made known through your life today?

Healthy Faith

Healthy Faith

Titus 1: 10 For there are many, especially the converts from Judaism, who rebel and deceive others with their nonsense. 11 It is necessary to stop their talk, because they are upsetting whole families by teaching what they should not, and all for the shameful purpose of making money. 12-13 It was a Cretan himself, one of their own prophets, who spoke the truth when he said, “Cretans are always liars, wicked beasts, and lazy gluttons.” For this reason you must rebuke them sharply, so that they may have a healthy faith 14 and no longer hold on to Jewish legends and to human commandments which come from people who have rejected the truth.

============

“Wear a suit because you want to give GOD your best” was a statement told to me so I wore suits to church. But when I went into the neighborhood to invite people to come to church, a person said “I don’t have anything to wear” meaning I can’t dress up like that.

  • This made me question what rules I was following that were barriers to CHRIST.
  • This made me examine the manmade rules for church versus following what GOD says.
  • This made me wonder what other lies have I been following that are mixed in with the truth.

Paul warns Titus about those who were converting from traditional Judaism to following CHRIST. This was a tumultuous time when followers of JESUS were getting thrown out of communities and, even worse, killed for their belief. Unfortunately there were some who saw an opportunity to make up their own groups to bilk people out of money.

My Observations

  • JESUS died and was raised from the dead and is now alive reigning over everything.
  • My belief in JESUS gives me eternal life and abundant life in the present.
  • Following JESUS means loving people versus following rules.

“Love one another” was the greatest command given by JESUS. This command broke rules, traditions and reasons to keep people out of the club. This command makes me examine myself versus blaming someone else for what he or she is doing or not doing.

Love sets me free from having to follow the rules and gives me thankfulness for being set free from my well-deserved eternal death. I am glad there is a path to healthy faith and that is through JESUS, who sends the HOLY SPIRIT as my guide.

Challenge

  • What is the warning of the writer?
  • What rules are you following or have made for yourself that do not come from GOD?
  • Will you examine yourself to see why you sometimes feel far from GOD and determine if you are being too hard on yourself and others today?

Not Like Everyone Else

Not Like Everyone Else

2 Timothy 3: 14 But as for you, continue in the truths that you were taught and firmly believe. You know who your teachers were, 15 and you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, 17 so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.

============

Hearing the lie said in the smooth delivery made me mad. I watched people fall for the lie and was amazed! I got up and told the truth and was met with criticism. “You are just jealous” is what someone, who was brave enough, said to me. “I wonder if I should start lying” was my thought.

  • I was tired of bad people getting ahead.
  • I was tired of being nice and finishing “last.”
  • I was tired of being ignored because I was trying to be “good.”

Paul finishes his warning to Timothy regarding conduct. He had mentioned that there would be some people who would persecute, derive evil and be deceitful. “But as for you” he says to Timothy. He tells Timothy there is another path.

My Observations

  • When other people are acting deceitful or imposing persecution or manipulative, GOD wants me to “continue in the truth.”
  • When it seems like everyone else is going one way that does not include JESUS as GOD and LORD of all, HE wants me to stand firm in the scriptures that HE inspired.
  • When I need to make a decision to be popular with a lie or be unpopular with the truth in scripture, GOD wants me to choose the unpopular route.

Believing in JESUS does not make people popular. In fact it seems quite the opposite. People run in the other direction at the mention of scripture or JESUS. BUT GOD wants everyone to understand HIS love and HE inspires many writers to speak about JESUS.

GOD’s revelation of HIS SON equips me for life’s traps and trials. When times were difficult, I can look back and see that HE was with me and that following the scriptures was all I had during times of deep trouble. I am so glad GOD has given us the scripture to help me live a life pleasing to HIM.

Challenge

  • What truths is the writer talking about?
  • Does “relative truth” scare you?
  • Will you continue in the truth of JESUS, our LORD and Savior, by studying HIS word and gaining useful wisdom that leads you to salvation and becoming fully qualified and equipped today?

Strong Roots

Strong Roots

Colossians 2: Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him. Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving.

============

Shaken at the experience of being robbed, I could not sleep. What if the bad guys are still out there? I started thinking of ways to “protect” myself, but came to the same conclusion each time. I was helpless.

  • I felt unsafe.
  • I wondered why things like this happened to me.
  • I felt weak and alone.

Paul gives some advice from the LORD. “Since you have accepted CHRIST JESUS as LORD, live in union with HIM.” This message was for preparation versus encouragement. He tells everyone to have deep roots in HIM to face difficult times.

My Observations

Unity in CHRIST enables me to go through difficulties with a clear head.

Deep roots in CHRIST brings HIS Word to mind when I need it most.

Building my life on CHRIST gives me a firm foundation that never changes, is always there and does not falter.

There are a lot of scary things out there these days. I mean, the fear of the day has humans shifting from one solution to the next. Some problems seem impossible for me to fix. BUT GOD says “I got this!”

When I place my total faith in CHRIST, then even the most difficult of circumstances tend to clear up in ways I did not imagine. HE gives me the weapon of “thanksgiving” which slays the enemy of fear, doubt and worry. I am grateful for CHRIST and HIS sacrifice for me.

Challenge

  • What does it mean to live in union with CHRIST?
  • What do you think the writer means by “keep your roots deep in HIM?”
  • Will you relook at your circumstance with the foundation of CHRIST so HE will make your faith stronger today?

Known For

Known For

Colossians 1: We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you. For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all God's people.

============

Being “skinny”, I was not popular like the jocks, so I used humor as my strength. When I went to college, I studied various ways to make people laugh. Some of the popular people on campus labeled me as the “class clown.” I was a sophomore. How did I make anyone’s list?

  • I was embarrassed.
  • I had a reputation that I did not anticipate.
  • I worried about being taken seriously.

Hearing about the reputation of the Colossians, Paul wrote to them with thankfulness. This faithful group of people served JESUS with vim. Paul was so excited that he prayed for them with thanksgiving, knowing there were others who were excited about CHRIST.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to give my reputation to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to be “known for “ speaking about HIS SON.
  • GOD wants me to have faith in CHRIST and love for all HIS people.

Being “known for” something is a quest humans struggle with. I mean, famous people rob and steal to obtain and keep a reputation for something. Others train all their lives to set records or have their names on a best seller. BUT GOD simply wants HIS SON known.

HE knows our reputations are not good for no human seek HIS ways. JESUS is known for being sinless and for letting HIS creation murder HIM after being slandered. HE is also known for being raised from the dead and for forgiving us for our sins if we believe HE did all of this for us. I gladly give my life to HIM and I don’t mind being “known for” speaking about HIM even though I am flawed.

Challenge

  • Can you feel tie excitement of the writer?
  • What would you like to be known for?
  • Will you seek being known for CHRIST so others may get to know HIM through your prayers, faithfulness and love for HIM today?

Raised From Exhaustion

Raised From Exhaustion

Philippians 3: Not only those things; I reckon everything as complete loss for the sake of what is so much more valuable, the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have thrown everything away; I consider it all as mere garbage, so that I may gain Christ and be completely united with him. I no longer have a righteousness of my own, the kind that is gained by obeying the Law. I now have the righteousness that is given through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith. 10 All I want is to know Christ and to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings and become like him in his death, 11 in the hope that I myself will be raised from death to life.

============

After running out of gas again, I vowed to keep a couple of gallons in the tank. Being on the side of the road without gas was frustrating! I woke up, needing to be someplace; jumped in the jalopy of a car and it would not start. The battery was dead. “Ugh! I just got gas!”

  • Just when I thought I did everything right, something else went wrong.
  • “When will it all come together for me?” was my cry in disappointment.
  • I had lost hope and was exhausted because there were too many things “I” needed to fix.

“Achievement” and “Self-Righteousness” were attitudes Paul addressed. Following the Law to the letter was something he no longer wished to “achieve.” GOD had opened his eyes to the fact that he had become “self-righteous” and was persecuting those who sought JESUS. He looked at his actions as a loss.

My Observations

  • JESUS is my only true salvation.
  • Believing that I can change GOD’s mind by acting good for a short period of time, causes me to be exhausted.
  • Connecting my “dead battery” of trying too hard to the power of JESUS’ resurrection gives me endless hope that cannot be exhausted.

Running on empty could mean I was trying too hard to please GOD. I mean, JESUS died for me, was raised from the dead and sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me. I had nothing to do with that. I should praise HIM continually, but I find a way to attempt to control GOD so everything will go “my” way.

When “bad” things happen, I try to do the Law “better.” BUT GOD sees through this filthy righteousness. All HE wants me to do is to place my faith in JESUS. I am glad I can place my hope in HIS resurrection and look forward to being with HIM eternally.

Challenge

  • What does the writer consider a complete loss?
  • Have you ever thought you were doing things perfectly and still not pleasing GOD?
  • Have you ever tried to convince GOD that you deserve better because you sinned less last week?
  • Will you place your full hope in JESUS and allow HIM to guide you through life without needing to achieve HIS love that HE already has for you?

Dropping the Safety Net

Dropping the Safety Net

Galatians 5: 11 But as for me, my friends, if I continue to preach that circumcision is necessary, why am I still being persecuted? If that were true, then my preaching about the cross of Christ would cause no trouble. 12 I wish that the people who are upsetting you would go all the way; let them go on and castrate themselves!

============

Comparing how well the food was prepared from one household to the next was easy. At one household, I critiqued the flavors, at the other I judged presentation. I had a lot to say until I had to do the cooking for a large group. It was a lot of pressure!

  • I felt safe to critique, but not to receive feedback.
  • I felt opinionated when I was not driving or leading the effort.
  • I felt I could complain when I had only a small part or no part at all in the success of someone else’s effort.

Paul implies that it is harder than it looks to speak about JESUS. Some people who were upsetting many, were placing unnecessary barriers in the way of those who desired to believe in CHRIST. Church leaders were giving lists of rules to follow, without giving themselves to the only Savior, namely JESUS. Paul expresses his anger towards those who attempt to take people off the path of following CHRIST.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to continue following JESUS through persecution.
  • GOD knows I will be persecuted and gives me joy and perseverance to keep going.
  • GOD desires that I continue to speak about the “cross of CHRIST” without worrying about being safe.

Dropping the safety net is a term used by circus acts. A tightrope walker would practice with a safety net without fear of falling. But when the safety net was removed, they could plummet to their death.

Same goes with following JESUS. It is easy to post a couple of scripture and anonymously attend a church, but when I had to speak about JESUS to someone, it was a different feeling. I was questioned, my character was doubted and my motives attacked.

Anger ensued where I thought love should have sprouted. I then learned, the adversary wanted me to be safe and not speak boldly about JESUS. I am glad JESUS grows us to follow HIM with fervor.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the writer’s persecution?
  • Do you think following JESUS should be easy?
  • Will you drop the safety net and prepare yourself to be persecuted by those who have not accepted JESUS because you joined HIM in HIS spiritual battle that HE has already won?

What Matters

What Matters

Galatians 5: Listen! I, Paul, tell you that if you allow yourselves to be circumcised, it means that Christ is of no use to you at all. Once more I warn any man who allows himself to be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the whole Law. Those of you who try to be put right with God by obeying the Law have cut yourselves off from Christ. You are outside God's grace. As for us, our hope is that God will put us right with him; and this is what we wait for by the power of God's Spirit working through our faith. For when we are in union with Christ Jesus, neither circumcision nor the lack of it makes any difference at all; what matters is faith that works through love.

============

One more thing went wrong that day. “LORD, what!?” was my frustrated cry. “Aren’t I doing enough? I’m trying to live right and it seems like those who easily do wrong are getting ahead in life!”  When I calmed down, the situation remained the same but I could quiet down to listen to GOD.

  • I thought I could live right to make everything go “”my” way.
  • I was doing “good” for me versus serving GOD.
  • I wanted something from the “deal” with GOD instead of simply living as HE wants.

Paul urges the Gentiles not to half-follow the Law by picking and choosing certain parts in efforts to feel closer to GOD. He warns everyone that by trying to depend on the Law to measure how “good” one can be brings judgment of the whole Law rather than freedom.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to see that HIS grace is what saved me.
  • GOD wants me to recognize that there is nothing in me that is worthy of HIS grace.
  • GOD wants me to accept HIS wonderful gift, which is HIS only SON.

When things go wrong, the HOLY SPIRIT is there to pick me up. I mean, because I believe that JESUS died to save me eternally, HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside me and anyone else who believes. Comfort, guidance, discernment and peace is what is given to all who believe.

Unfortunately there is a war inside me that tries to take over the situation, causing me to doubt GOD’s true love. I think “I” have to do something rather than simply having faith in HIS ways. I am glad JESUS forgives me for those weak moments and restores my faith in HIM.

Challenge

  • What do you think was going on with this group of people?
  • What does it mean to be “put right” with GOD?
  • Will you seek unity with CHRIST through faith versus trying to be “good” enough to please GOD who is already pleased with you?

New Clothes

New Clothes

Galatians 3: 26 It is through faith that all of you are God's children in union with Christ Jesus. 27 You were baptized into union with Christ, and now you are clothed, so to speak, with the life of Christ himself. 28 So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves and free people, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are the descendants of Abraham and will receive what God has promised.

============

Tattered clothes made me feel ashamed  to be in public. Ridicule from other children made me self-conscious about my garments and I began to second guess my abilities. “What do I have to offer if I don’t fit in?” I thought from my insecurities.

  • I was insecure.
  • I was self-conscious about my outward appearance.
  • I was busy looking on the outside of me and I did not like what I saw.

Paul concludes his explanation of the temporary use of “The Law.” He mentions that “It is through faith” that we are GOD’s children. Baptism by the HOLY SPIRIT brought all who believed in JESUS as the Savior, into union with CHRIST. Now the promise of being a descendant of Abraham is available to those who believe.

My Observations

  • I can be secure in this life when I put my trust in JESUS.
  • Sin soiled and tore my godly clothes.
  • GOD gave me new clothes that are not made with human hands, rather of the SPIRIT.

Being adopted into the family of GOD has its benefits. I mean, now I am in union with CHRIST and I can be confident that the Creator wants me to have everything in HIS kingdom. Unfortunately my insecurities blind me to focus on the world and I overlook GOD’s kingdom.

I fall into the trap of trying to wear clothes made from humans and I adorn myself in businesses, jobs, titles, political affiliations, social groups and social pressures. These clothes get old quickly, BUT GOD’s clothes never stain or tear. I gladly wear the life of JESUS as a garment I am not ashamed to wear.

Challenge

  • What does the passage say about equality?
  • How does this passage address insecurity?
  • Will you accept the security of GOD for this life and the next by believing in JESUS as your Savior so you can put on HIS new clothes of purpose and freedom today?

Time for Faith

Time for Faith

Galatians 3: 23 But before the time for faith came, the Law kept us all locked up as prisoners until this coming faith should be revealed. 24 And so the Law was in charge of us until Christ came, in order that we might then be put right with God through faith. 25 Now that the time for faith is here, the Law is no longer in charge of us.

============

Tired of things going wrong in my life, I felt like giving up, but where was I to turn? Bars and hanging out had lost its luster. “There has got to be something more to life than this!” I said to myself. As I walked into my apartment building, a neighbor said “What church do you go to?” “Here we go again with that question” I thought. But I could not stop thinking about it.

  • I had no place to put my hope.
  • I had turned away from GOD and labeled everyone a hypocrite.
  • I had tried to do things under my own power and sometimes it worked, but I still had troubles.

Paul gives everyone a short history lesson. Before JESUS was born as a human to die for our sins, the Law was given to govern the relationship with GOD. The Law was like giving a toddler a lit match with a choice to light an explosive or a candle. Rules made out of explosives were used to guide everyone to the candle. People failed at following the Law.

My Observations

  • When I see myself falling into the trap of hopelessness, GOD wants me to have faith.
  • When I am in a situation that seems like there is no way out, GOD wants me to see HIM as the answer.
  • When I fail, fall down, or fall apart, GOD wants me to believe in JESUS as my Savior in this life and the next.

Seasons come and go. Sometimes high, sometimes low. BUT GOD wants me to be stable so I can face the highs and lows with confidence that I am not alone. JESUS changed everything. HE put all of humanity right with GOD as long as faith in HIM is placed above everything.

JESUS wants me to know it is time for me to place my faith in HIS way and let go of trying to be perfect as the Law says I should be. I am glad I am released from the Law so I can have hope in the middle of my failures.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer speak about different periods of time?
  • Have you ever become exhausted by trying hard to “please” GOD?
  • Will you accept HIS perfect gift for you and believe JESUS cares about your life on earth and eternity?

Promise Kept

Promise Kept

Galatians 3: 13 But by becoming a curse for us Christ has redeemed us from the curse that the Law brings; for the scripture says, “Anyone who is hanged on a tree is under God's curse.” 14 Christ did this in order that the blessing which God promised to Abraham might be given to the Gentiles by means of Christ Jesus, so that through faith we might receive the Spirit promised by God.

Nervousness made me think of wild outcomes. “My life is ruined” I said out loud when I failed a test or when the dean told me my grades were not up to par or when I lost a loved one. I took past wounds and used them to guide my thinking. I wanted to “see evidence” that a mistake would not catch me off guard so that I could “live.”

  • Life made me place faith in what I could see.
  • I thought I needed large bank accounts, great insurance and various comforts or pleasures to be categorized as “blessed.”
  • I was blinded by what people called “blessed” and felt GOD did not keep HIS promises.

CHRIST gave up everything to save humanity. Paul explains this from the perspective of the Law and from the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT. He explained that GOD made a promise to Abraham to “bless” him because of his faith. This blessing includes a “promise” that all who believe will receive the “SPIRIT.”

My Observations

  • Humanity will scoff at the HOLY SPIRIT as my prize.
  • GOD wants me to see beyond this life to understand being with HIM for eternity is the true goal.
  • JESUS died for me and was raised to life, so my faith in HIM gives me purpose which stores up treasure in heaven.

Whatever is in the heart will come out in words and actions. I mean, if hatred, rage, jealousy, fear, lust, or pride is in my heart, it will come out of my mouth or I will act on it. While GOD may forgive me, it does not produce fruit for HIM.

GOD wants me to seek HIS kingdom daily and to turn away from the usual thinking I fall prey to. HE wants me to praise JESUS daily for saving me! When HE gave me the HOLY SPIRIT to live in me, HE wants me to feed HIM with acts of faith daily. I am glad JESUS kept HIS promise so I can received the “promised blessing.”

Challenge

  • What is the blessing promised to Abraham?
  • Have you ever doubted GOD because of the definition of “blessing” humans have tried to present?
  • Will you seek GOD’s true blessing and allow HIM to lead you to grow HIS kingdom today?

Rest From Perfection

Rest From Perfection

Galatians 3: 10 Those who depend on obeying the Law live under a curse. For the scripture says, “Whoever does not always obey everything that is written in the book of the Law is under God's curse!” 11 Now, it is clear that no one is put right with God by means of the Law, because the scripture says, “Only the person who is put right with God through faith shall live.” 12 But the Law has nothing to do with faith. Instead, as the scripture says, “Whoever does everything the Law requires will live.”

Holding it together was becoming a task. My junk car had seen better days. I had to drive it perfectly for it to work. It wouldn’t always start, so I kept tools in the car, just in case. I also kept jumper cables in case the battery died. I had extra engine coolant because the radiator leaked and cans of oil and transmission fluid for the same reason. If one thing went wrong, the car would not work.

  • I spent most of my time trying to be perfect when it was a losing battle.
  • I felt hopeless because I could not afford to get out of my precarious situation.
  • I needed something new that was dependable and reliable.

Obeying “The Law” was not the problem rather depending on it for salvation. Paul clarifies this by using “The Law” to prove how impossible it was to be saved. If one law was broken, then all laws were broken. Picking and choosing favorite scriptures was not an option.

My Observations

  • When I am exhausted I need to examine if I am trying to live perfect instead of believing I am forgiven.
  • GOD took care of all my sins, needs and desires, all I have to do is have faith in HIS plan for me.
  • Thinking I, or others, can be perfect is the problem GOD wants me to let go of so I can have rest.

Sin is a nasty, sticky opponent that is relentless. I mean, when I think I have one area of my life under control, another situation I never would have expected pops up. I find myself in new sins I never would have dreamed of. When I focus on the situation, it seems hopeless. BUT GOD says different.

HE has me focus on the true and mighty solution, namely JESUS. When the world spits out new hatred and fights one another, JESUS says to us “Have faith, I have overcome the world.” Placing my faith in JESUS does not mean I am out of touch, it simply means I have hope. I am glad JESUS gave me the COMFORTER so I can rest.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about “depending on the Law?”
  • Have you ever self-examined what you place your dependence on?
  • Will you reduce your control, fears and doubts enough so you can add trust, faith and belief in JESUS today so you can rest from trying to be “perfect?”

Comfort of Belief

Comfort of Belief

Galatians 3: Consider the experience of Abraham; as the scripture says, “He believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous.” You should realize, then, that the real descendants of Abraham are the people who have faith. The scripture predicted that God would put the Gentiles right with himself through faith. And so the scripture announced the Good News to Abraham: “Through you God will bless all people.” Abraham believed and was blessed; so all who believe are blessed as he was.

============

“Would you like to have a position leading a small team?” was the question that seemed too good to be true and I could not believe. In fact, I wanted to know the catch. Was I being set up for failure? “It’s not a hoax. Take the position” were the words of a boss that I, and many, did not like. I was suspicious, but took the position and it worked out well.

  • Sometimes I want to protect myself so I withhold my belief.
  • Sometimes I want evidence so I research until I feel comfortable.
  • Sometimes I want a crowd or logical thinkers who have proven themselves time and time again, to provide answers so I will not make a mistake.

Abraham is known as the Father of faith. When GOD told him, he would be blessed because of his faith, he believed. This belief was simple. Abraham did not have to do anything but believe and GOD would do the rest. Abraham acted on this belief in ways that baffled many, but it worked out well.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to obey HIM, even when many doubt HIS path for me.
  • GOD wants me to believe in HIS SON as the answer, even when the crowd has agreed on another way.
  • GOD wants me to know HE has the entire situation, all I have to do is believe.

Feeling blessed and being blessed seem to be two very different things. The world would have a definition of “blessed” that is vastly different than the way GOD sees it. HE is seeking the lot and wants HIS kingdom to flourish. The world wants humans to focus on self-indulgence, self—preservation and selfish behaviors.

Belief in JESUS breaks the chain of “self.” When I believed in JESUS, my life became HIS. It may not look successful to the world, but all of heaven rejoiced when I said “JESUS is my Savior.” I am glad GOD’s blessings for me can never be stolen.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about Abraham’s belief?
  • Have you ever believed in something that is counterintuitive and it worked out?
  • Will you be comforted that GOD sees your belief and will reward you greatly?
