Checked Out to Check In

Checked Out to Check In

Genesis 24: 29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban, and Laban ran out to the man by the well. 30 So it came to pass, when he saw the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, “Thus the man spoke to me,” that he went to the man. And there he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.”

32 Then the man came to the house. And he unloaded the camels, and provided straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told about my errand.”

And he said, “Speak on.”

============

Laban, Rebekah’s brother, came over to check out what was going on by the well. He saw camels and a strange man speaking to his sister. He went to them and heard her story. He then invited the man into their house. He checked out Abraham’s servant.

My Observations:

  • Possibly the HOLY SPIRIT told Laban to prepare a place for a guest to come and he did so without knowing Abraham’s servant would show up.
  • Laban discovered that Abraham’s servant was the one he was waiting for.
  • Laban was excited to see Abraham’s servant because he may have heard from the HOLY SPIRIT and saw it fulfilled.

Abraham said GOD would send HIS angel before the servant. I believe the HOLY SPIRIT prepared the situation so Laban would not drive Abraham’s servant away, rather invite him into their home. Laban verified that he was the one he was looking for and got excited.

Abraham’s servant did not get caught up in the excitement. He insisted that he explain the circumstance that GOD had him in. He would not eat until he explained. Laban may have been led by the HOLY SPIRIT to listen.

Challenge

  • Why does Laban say “Come in, O blessed of the LORD?”
  • Has GOD ever sent you on a journey, not knowing if you had a place?
  • Is the HOLY SPIRIT prompting you to prepare a place for someone?

Stunned

Stunned

Genesis 24: 15 And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher.”

18 So she said, “Drink, my lord.” Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.

============

Abraham’s servant was praying to the LORD, probably because he had seen Abraham do this often. He was not testing GOD or even trying to muster up faith by forcing GOD to do the impossible on his terms. He simply asked GOD to help him not make a mistake in choosing a wife for Isaac. Before he could finish speaking, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulders.

My Observations:

  • The HOLY SPIRIT orchestrated the perfect timing of Abraham’s servant being at the well when Rebekah came out.
  • Rebekah had a servant leader’s heart, able to serve strangers without complaint or personal gain.
  • Abraham’s servant was stunned because the LORD answered his prayer exactly as he asked.

“Is this too good to be true?”, the servant may have asked himself. He asked a very specific prayer and it was answered so quickly and specifically. I believe GOD still does this. HE does not mind a specific prayer that is coupled with the right heart.

Abraham’s servant would gain nothing from this prayer being answered. The wife would be for Isaac, and Abraham would get the promise GOD had for him. Abraham’s servant wanted what was best for everyone else because he was already blessed by running Abraham’s household. He had everything Abraham had so he was as wealthy as Abraham. His prayer was answered.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD mention to Moses that Abraham’s servant remained silent, “wondering at her?”
  • Have you ever asked GOD for something and it came through so quickly that you were stunned?
  • Are you willing to ask GOD for something for someone else without the need for personal gain?

Spiritual Purpose Orchestrated

Spiritual Purpose Orchestrated

Genesis 24: And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?”

But Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there. The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

Abraham’s servant asked for clarification regarding Isaac. He wondered if he should take Isaac with him to live in the land where Abraham grew up. Abraham said “no” and gave an explanation of how things would happen.

My Observations:

  • When GOD created the heaven and the earth, the HOLY SPIRIT hovered over the water.
  • When GOD created humans, HE said Let “US” make man in “OUR” own image.
  • When GOD was about to tear down the Tower of Babel, HE said let “US” go down and confuse their language.

Abraham must have seen the “US” part of GOD in action. I believe when Abraham said that GOD would send “HIS angel” before you, he may have been referring to the HOLY SPIRIT. I believe JESUS walked in the Garden of Eden and spoke with Noah. I also believe that JESUS and the HOLY SPIRIT appeared together somehow.

It makes sense to me that this is the HOLY SPIRIT because the situation needed to be orchestrated, requiring multiple people to be guided. Up to this point, we have only seen angels appear with JESUS and only having information that was given to them. They discovered information as they helped Lot out the city. BUT the HOLY SPIRIT would know exactly what to do to guide the situation into the promise of GOD.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about the conclusion Abraham had regarding sending his servant to find a wife for Isaac?
  • Has GOD told you something would happen and you need the HOLY SPIRIT to orchestrate the situation?
  • Will you seek the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT so HE will guide you to be part of someone else’s growth or salvation today?

Everything Craved

Everything Craved

Revelation 5: 11 Again I looked, and I heard angels, thousands and millions of them! They stood around the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders, 12 and sang in a loud voice:

“The Lamb who was killed is worthy
    to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and strength,
    honor, glory, and praise!”
13 And I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, in the world below, and in the sea—all living beings in the universe—and they were singing:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb,
    be praise and honor, glory and might,
    forever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures answered, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

============

After struggling for years to pay my bills, it felt good to be able to pay for rent and a car payment. After a while, I was able to get a house and another new car because I got a “better” job. This wasn’t enough. I needed to be a decision maker so I climbed the corporate ladder in pursuit of a title.

  • I tied a personal cause to it to justify the enormous amount of hours spent seeking power.
  • I thought I needed a title to “help” other people.
  • I thought “I” was the answer to other people’s problems and I needed to be strong.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, is given another look at the throne area where GOD sat and JESUS was standing. Thousands of millions of powerful angels surrounded the throne, possibly protecting it, but also engaged in worship. Another son was sang, this time with a chorus. The song was about JESUS receiving power, wealth, wisdom, and strength, honor, glory, and praise!”

My Observations:

  • GOD is so powerful and I am so weak and I sometimes want the things JESUS deserves.
  • GOD has everything and since HE is made of pure love, is willing to share it with me.
  • JESUS did what no other could do and that is die for my sins and be raised from the dead.

All the things I want, JESUS has. I mean, I sometimes want power, wealth, wisdom, and strength, honor, glory, and praise!” I may even work a little longer and harder when I get even a couple of these items on the list. BUT JESUS is the only one who deserves these items.

JESUS did what no other being did, namely gave HIS life for HIS creation. HE is placed over everything. No power can come up against JESUS. The throne room scene by John shows the FATHER, the SON and the HOLY SPIRIT with all power, wealth, wisdom, and strength,  honor, glory, and praise!” My crave is to yield my desires to GOD.

Challenge

  • Did the writer present the presence of GOD as a weakling?
  • Have you ever thought GOD was a pushover because HE is showing you grace and mercy?
  • Will you contemplate your view of power, wealth, wisdom, and strength,  honor, glory, and praise so you can give it to JESUS and HE will share it with you?

Expectations Met

Expectations Met

1 John 5: Jesus Christ is the one who came with the water of his baptism and the blood of his death. He came not only with the water, but with both the water and the blood. And the Spirit himself testifies that this is true, because the Spirit is truth. There are three witnesses: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and all three give the same testimony. We believe human testimony; but God's testimony is much stronger, and he has given this testimony about his Son.

============

Sitting in driver’s school, I looked at my watch all day! It seemed like the hours moved as days as the instructor warned all of us speeders about the dangers of driving fast. I had to check in at the beginning of the class and then check out at the end.

  • I was sentenced to serve eight hours for my speeding.
  • I was required to take the driver’s class.
  • I needed an official witness that I took the class in order for the speeding ticket to not count against me.

John addressed something that people are still looking for to this very day, namely a person who can fix the mess humans are in. Poverty, sickness, violence and other problems seemed to grow, removing all hope. John addressed the fact the JESUS is the Messiah, the Savior of the world. Humans witnessed HIS baptism, but only HE experienced death and the SPIRIT testifies that HE met the criteria, GOD was looking for.

My Observations:

  • Satan’s pride caused him to get kicked out of heaven, and he introduced sin into the world by tricking Adam and Eve into performing an seemingly innocent sin.
  • All of humanity became sinners through Adam and Eve and needed a sinless Savior.
  • JESUS became a human, who never once sinned, who was baptized and murdered by HIS creation, but was raised from the dead by the HOLY SPIRIT.

Human witnesses are good, BUT GOD’s witness is the ultimate. I mean, humans can provide a witness to something and still be wrong or possibly have a sinful motive behind his or her witness. BUT GOD’s witness is pure and contains no sin.

The HOLY SPIRIT witnessed JESUS’s death and raised HIM from the dead. This act redeemed all humans who believe in the need of salvation. HIS resurrection was enough to meet GOD’s expectations. I am glad GOD supplied everything I needed to remove my sentence and to become redeemed by HIS SON.

Challenge

  • What does the writer point out about JESUS?
  • Have you ever pondered why did HE have to go through all of the pain and suffering?
  • Will you see GOD’s love in JESUS’s actions by surrendering your life to HIM and by knowing that all expectations of you have been met, simply by believing in what HE has done today?

Able to Hear

Able to Hear

1 John 2: 20 But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ, and so all of you know the truth. 21 I write you, then, not because you do not know the truth; instead, it is because you do know it, and you also know that no lie ever comes from the truth.

============

“You are going to have fun” were the words I got excited over. Fun, at this point was amusement parks and games. But the fun described by this group was getting drunk, having sex and missing many classes.

  • Something inside me said “You shouldn’t go down this path” but I would not listen.
  • Something inside me said “There is another way” but I wanted to go the way “everyone else” went.
  • Something inside me said “What is being told to you is a lie” but I didn’t believe the warning.

John turns from speaking about those who follow the “Enemy of CHRIST” to those who truly follow HIM. He gives his reason for writing to this group, implying that it is because they could “hear the real truth.”  He may have also addressed uncertainty because the believers were being persecuted.

My Observations:

  • Today’s relative truth will get me in trouble, BUT GOD’s truth has always been a foundation I can count on.
  • Today’s strong belief in something outside of JESUS will make me fall, BUT JESUS is the Truth I can believe in without fail.
  • Today’s focus on self can cause me to not even want to listen to GOD, BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT opens the ears to my heart so I can hear.

Ability to hear GOD begins with wanting to hear HIM and knowing I need HIM. I mean, when I do not want to change or want to get my own way, I quickly listen to people who say what “I” want to hear. When I find myself in trouble, I may stay there or seek “true” help from GOD.

Humans think they have the answer, BUT JESUS provided the truth, because HE is the answer. HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to those who believe in HIM and they can hear from GOD and adjust their lives. I am glad GOD is so generous and is willing to continue to pour out HIS SPIRIT on you and me.

Challenge

  • How does the writer address uncertainty?
  • Have you ever done something wrong that you knew you should not be doing?
  • If you have sought after relative truth, will you seek the real truth by asking JESUS to come into your life and to pour out the HOLY SPIRIT on you today?

For Your Benefit

For Your Benefit

1 Peter 1: 10 It was concerning this salvation that the prophets made careful search and investigation, and they prophesied about this gift which God would give you. 11 They tried to find out when the time would be and how it would come. This was the time to which Christ's Spirit in them was pointing, in predicting the sufferings that Christ would have to endure and the glory that would follow. 12 God revealed to these prophets that their work was not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News by the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. These are things which even the angels would like to understand.

============

Collecting information about me and my family, the administrative assistant smiled and went away. Not thinking anything of it, I got back to work. Later I found out that she used the information to provide a special gift for my family.

  • I was excited!
  • I felt great that this was done for us.
  • I never thought I could be thought of in a special way.

Peter spoke about something very special that was given to mankind through the prophets. The announcement that JESUS would come to save humanity was given to prophets. Some may have felt special and others may not. But it wasn’t for their benefit that the message was given, rather it was for us.

My Observations:

  • GOD revealed the solution to all of humanity’s problems when HE gave the prophets the prediction of JESUS.
  • JESUS fulfilled every prophetic message through the suffering HE endured.
  • Even the angels are confounded over the action of JESUS.

Love of humans that is so strong that it made JESUS die for us is confusing. I mean, there is not a single human that would give up everything, be blamed for all problems and become the one and only sacrifice to save the world. BUT JESUS did.

HE did take on your sin and mine. HE knew HE was the only one who could walk sinless as a human, but remain powerful as GOD. Confusing? Yes it is, but it is this powerful love that you and I benefit from. I am grateful that I am loved deeply by GOD.

Challenge

  • What revelation did the writer speak of?
  • Have you ever wondered why JESUS would do what HE did for you?
  • Will you take some time to praise GOD for what HE has done and is doing in your life today?

Presence

Presence

Hebrews 12: 18 You have not come, as the people of Israel came, to what you can feel, to Mount Sinai with its blazing fire, the darkness and the gloom, the storm, 19 the blast of a trumpet, and the sound of a voice. When the people heard the voice, they begged not to hear another word, 20 because they could not bear the order which said, “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.” 21 The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling and afraid!”

============

Music blared with a fast pace. Suddenly fireworks sizzled on stage. Then the speaker came out and delivered a riveting speech. “Wow!” I said to myself. At that point, I wanted to be like the speaker and started thinking of ways to mimic the style.

  • I was impressed by the speaker’s presence.
  • I was enamored by the fanfare.
  • I got caught up in the show.

Paul, the assumed writer, attempted to explain the reaction of the Israelites when they were at mount Sinai.. They experienced the presence of GOD and were terrified! HIS holiness would not allow even a stray animal to touch the mountain.

My Observations:

  • GOD’s presences is awesome and terrifying.
  • GOD is absolutely holy and cannot have sin in HIS presence.
  • JESUS washed away all my sins, which allows me into GOD’s presence.

Being centuries removed from the encounter Moses had with GOD makes me take it lightly. I mean, GOD terrified those who saw what HE did to the mountain, yet I am not terrified to take HIM to my sinful places. HE placed the HOLY SPIRIT, who also cannot stand sin, inside me.

GOD sees all, hears all and knows all I do. I should be terrified!. Fortunately for me, GOD understands and provides sufficient grace. HE withholds HIS wrath and provides for me every day. I am so glad GOD’s presence with me is gentle and forgiving, but I will someday see HIS true glory which is unimaginable.

Challenge

  • What part of the writer’s illustration sticks out to you?
  • Have you ever been impressed by someone with “presence?”
  • Will you reflect on the power of GOD and imagine HIS presence, and make changes to how you approach today?

More Than Enough

More Than Enough

Titus 3: God poured out the Holy Spirit abundantly on us through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that by his grace we might be put right with God and come into possession of the eternal life we hope for. This is a true saying.

============

Pouring a little water on the burning log, I thought the fire was out. The flames went away and it sizzled a little, so I assumed it was out. I came back a little while later only to see smoke. This made me curious so I watched it for a while. It did not blaze up, but smoke rose up more and more.

  • I thought I used enough water.
  • I thought a little water would do.
  • I saw the fire go out but I did not use enough water to ensure the flames would not return.

Paul mentions how GOD “poured out the HOLY SPIRIT” on us. GOD did this “abundantly”  so that by HIS grace we might be put right with HIM and come into possession of the eternal life we hope for.

My Observations

  • GOD saved me with an abundance of grace.
  • GOD rescued me by HIS own decision.
  • GOD gave me hope when it seems hopeless.

Abundance is something GOD wants me to see HE has plenty of. I mean, GOD does not do something half way. HE doesn’t just love me sometimes or care for me only when I’m good. HE loves me dearly when I make a mess of things and is always willing to receive me with open arms when I return to HIM.

GOD has an overflowing amount of grace. So much so, that HIS grace is sufficient to give me eternal life and hope in this life. I am truly grateful for HIS abundance!

Challenge

  • Why does the writer use “abundantly” when describing GOD’s actions?
  • Have you ever done something that wasn’t quite enough?
  • Will you receive GOD’s abundance by believing in HIS SON JESUS, who saves all who are willing to believe today?

Ambition

Ambition

Colossians 1: For this reason we have always prayed for you, ever since we heard about you. We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will, with all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives. 10 Then you will be able to live as the Lord wants and will always do what pleases him. Your lives will produce all kinds of good deeds, and you will grow in your knowledge of God.

============

After a taste of “success” I wanted more. I figured I could “help” more people if I obtained a certain title. I worked day and night climbing the ladder of “success.” While I was working, I was too busy to help those who I intended to help.

  • I was blinded by ambition.
  • I thought the title was more important than my actions.
  • I believed I knew what could help people.

Paul indirectly addressed the human will. He knew humans could be blinded by the world’s ambitions, justifying selfish actions along the way. There was only one way to please GOD, namely be filled.

My Observations

  • Knowledge of GOD is important for me to seek.
  • Wisdom from GOD helps me with discernment.
  • Understanding from GOD provides me with better actions to help me grow.

Ambition is a very deceptive foe. I mean, on the surface it looks quite innocent and the world loves an ambitious hero. BUT GOD’s will speaks softly and will not compete with the human will. HE, unfortunately, allows us to try to reach our desires, which HE knows can take us off HIS path.

BUT GOD is forgiving and wants us to succeed. When I empty myself and allow HIM to “fill” me up, I can please HIM through HIS wisdom, knowledge and understanding. I am glad GOD enables me to produce HIS fruit.

Challenge

  • What good deeds is the writer speaking of?
  • What does “growth in GOD” look like?
  • Will you seek GOD’s will so HE can give you wisdom, knowledge and understanding to do “good deeds” that are pleasing to HIM today?

Protected

Protected

Ephesians 6: 16 At all times carry faith as a shield; for with it you will be able to put out all the burning arrows shot by the Evil One. 17 And accept salvation as a helmet, and the word of God as the sword which the Spirit gives you.

============

“Why is this happening?” has been the question I raised up to GOD many times. During several points in my life, it seemed like wave after wave after wave of calamity was happening. Peace could not be found.

  • I was down.
  • I felt like things were hopeless.
  • I did not see any relief any time soon.

“Carry faith” was Paul’s analogy in the armor of GOD. He warns that the Evil One will try to attack everyone and a way to thwart the attack is through faith. He also gives us protection of the mind by belief in JESUS for salvation. He lastly provides the only weapon used in the armor of GOD, namely GOD’s word.

My Observations

  • Despair, doubt and disappointments can be fought against with faith in the LORD.
  • Fear, insecurity and uncertainty can be erased from my mind with salvation in JESUS.
  • Lies, twisted words and manipulation can be destroyed with the Word of GOD.

Protection against the Evil One is highly important to GOD. HE knows we are simply sheep amongst wolves, so HE gives us a way to protect ourselves against a foe that seems relentless. Our fight is not against humans, rather against “wicked spiritual forces” according to the scripture.

Salvation keeps our minds clear and focused on the LORD. The world will keep coming up with things that can pollute our mind to turn away from GOD. Since our sin nature wants what it wants, GOD provided HIS word to guide our desires back in alignment with HIM. I am glad GOD gave me the whole armor to protect me daily.

Challenge

  • When does the writer feel you should use faith as protection?
  • Have you ever felt helpless, worried or overwhelmed?
  • Will you seek GOD’s protection through faith in HIS power, belief in HIS SON and understanding of HIS word today?

Start With It, Stay With It

Start With It, Stay With It

Galatians 3: You foolish Galatians! Who put a spell on you? Before your very eyes you had a clear description of the death of Jesus Christ on the cross! Tell me this one thing: did you receive God's Spirit by doing what the Law requires or by hearing the gospel and believing it? How can you be so foolish! You began by God's Spirit; do you now want to finish by your own power? Did all your experience mean nothing at all? Surely it meant something! Does God give you the Spirit and work miracles among you because you do what the Law requires or because you hear the gospel and believe it?

============

With tears flowing down my face I accepted the invitation to believe in JESUS as my Savior and be baptized. While I was young, I could tell the difference between right and wrong. It was a relief that I was forgiven “forever.” But somewhere along the way, I doubted being eternally forgiven.

  • I started thinking GOD was ready to punish me at the slightest mistake.
  • I started believing that the “good” I did came from “me” and GOD would leave me for sinning.
  • I started complaining about how GOD would allow “sinners” to get ahead in life, meanwhile those who were trying to follow HIM were getting pummeled.

Paul addresses an issue that remains today. He spoke about “belief” versus “works.” He noticed the people were favoring following the Law for redemption to GOD. He called them foolish for giving up on their “belief” in JESUS.

My Observations

  • When GOD chose me, HE did it before HE created me.
  • GOD is not the author of confusion and HE warns me that I have an adversary who spreads lies about HIM.
  • Belief is the beginning of the relationship with JESUS and I need to also believe HE will never, ever leave me for making mistakes.

Getting to know JESUS can be confusing at times. I mean, one writer says “Faith without works is dead” another writer says “You began by GOD’s SPIRIT; do you now want to finish by your own power?” Both are correct, but how?

Faith leads me to want to serve others so they too can believe in JESUS. But is it the HOLY SPIRIT who sustains me, comforts me and begs for me before the FATHER in words I don’t understand. Belief needs to be total. JESUS saved me in the middle of my sins, not after I stopped sinning as Satan would have me believe. I am glad this is the Good News JESUS wants me to spread.

Challenge

  • What is the trap the writer is trying to get the readers out of?
  • Have you ever questioned GOD’s love or plan for you?
  • Will you go all the way back to when you first believed in JESUS and celebrate the fact that HE took care of it all, especially the sins you are concerned about today?

Amazing Interior

Amazing Interior

2 Corinthians 4: Yet we who have this spiritual treasure are like common clay pots, in order to show that the supreme power belongs to God, not to us. We are often troubled, but not crushed; sometimes in doubt, but never in despair; there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend; and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed. 10 At all times we carry in our mortal bodies the death of Jesus, so that his life also may be seen in our bodies. 11 Throughout our lives we are always in danger of death for Jesus' sake, in order that his life may be seen in this mortal body of ours. 12 This means that death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

============

There is a show that displays a normal looking house on the outside, but on the inside, the owner has transformed it into something wildly amazing! This reminded me of people I met along the way who, at first glance, seemed common. They had no distinguishing features nor did they wield a title. It was their inside that amazed me. They could not be shaken no matter the circumstance.

  • I met people who could face life’s doubts but never losing their stride.
  • I met people who have been troubled but kept going.
  • I met people who have been fired, hurt by people or hurt physically, yet they kept a song of praise on their lips.

Paul describes the body people spend so much time adorning as a common clay pot. Nothing special. The real beauty comes from the inside is what he eluded to. He mentions that we “carry in our mortal bodies the death of JESUS.” This hope is an amazing interior!

My Observations

  • Hope is a spiritual treasure GOD has gladly given me.
  • Perseverance is a spiritual treasure GOD provides me to keep going when I feel like giving up.
  • Purpose is a spiritual treasure GOD bestows on me to face life’s difficulties so others can receive JESUS.

Troubles, doubts, enemies and pain seem to be more of the norm than I would wish in life. I mean, when I accepted JESUS as my Savior, I really wanted an easier life. Instead, when I chose HIS side, it sometimes felt life got worse. The greedy got greedier and the selfish got more selfish, deliberately causing pain for their own power and pleasure.

BUT GOD saw it all and placed HIS HOLY SPIRIT in me to show others HE is in charge. HE does not mind when I doubt, but wants me to get back up. HE knows people will deliberately try to hurt me, but wants me to seek friends for prayer. HE knows I will feel pain, but not the pain JESUS felt while dying for me and me blaming HIM for my sins. I am glad HE lives in me!

Challenge

  • Have you ever beat yourself up because you doubted?
  • Are there people you admire who are not celebrities yet carry themselves with great character?
  • Will you allow GOD to live in you and be seen through your life so HE can bring everlasting life to all you speak to?

The Grace Effect

The Grace Effect

1 Corinthians 15: Last of all he appeared also to me—even though I am like someone whose birth was abnormal. For I am the least of all the apostles—I do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God's church. 10 But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me was not without effect. On the contrary, I have worked harder than any of the other apostles, although it was not really my own doing, but God's grace working with me. 11 So then, whether it came from me or from them, this is what we all preach, and this is what you believe.

============

“I’m saved for eternity!” is the Good News I accepted at an early age. This came with a calling to tell other people about JESUS. But that did not stop me from wanting to sin. I wanted to fit in with everyone else, so I stopped being the “goody, goody” person and tried what “everyone else” was doing. It seemed like my sin would be caught and theirs wouldn’t. In fact, it seemed like I would get singled out and they would go free.

  • I had a misconception of grace.
  • I thought grace meant I was forgiven for my sins and I did not have to have consequence.
  • I was alright with just getting into heaven, so I figured I would live it up here and then I would be in heaven and I could live it up there.

JESUS met Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul was headed to murder more followers of JESUS. HE called Paul into ministry by blinding him. Paul had to suffer to tell people about JESUS. He was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, bitten by a snake and left to die. But GOD’s grace kept him working harder than the other Apostles.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to take my sin seriously.
  • GOD wants a real relationship with me and HE does not like sin.
  • GOD wants me to surrender my life to HIM and to confess my sin to HIM and accept the consequence of my sin.

Being a child of GOD is wonderful, but it ain’t easy. Yes I said “ain’t.” I mean, it seems like other people can act like scoundrels and do as they please while I try to do the right thing and face more suffering. To top it off, when I sin, it seems like GOD comes after me with a stick. Well, at least sometimes.

GOD’s grace extends into this life. The effect of HIS grace wipes away my eternal consequence, but let’s face it… If I did something harmful to another person, GOD will allow the consequence to sprout up from the seeds of sin I planted. Grace is still there, I just have to understand I am at GOD’s mercy which diminishes getting “my” way.

Challenge

  • What new observation about grace do you see in what is written?
  • What do you notice about being humble in this apostle’s words?
  • What misconceptions, if any, do you have about GOD’s grace?
  • Do you think sin can keep you blinded so you will not grow to have a true relationship with JESUS?

Three Choices

Three Choices

1 Corinthians 2: 10 But it was to us that God made known his secret by means of his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, even the hidden depths of God's purposes. 11 It is only our own spirit within us that knows all about us; in the same way, only God's Spirit knows all about God. 12 We have not received this world's spirit; instead, we have received the Spirit sent by God, so that we may know all that God has given us.

============

Worried, I sat awake in the middle of the night. After a string of good bosses, I ran into yet another poor leader. I ran through my options. Make an adjustment to “my” style was my first thought. Second, I could seek advice from some “successful” people. I wonder if there was a third option.

  • There have been many times when I tried to do things under “my” own power.
  • There have been many times when I tried to do things using advice from “successful” people of the world.
  • There have been many times when I tried to do things that have not been given to me, and I pouted over what was not mine.

Three beings are spoken about in Paul’s description. He starts off speaking about the HOLY SPIRIT, which GOD revealed HIS secret. He then spoke about the human spirit that knows our successes and failures. The last being is the spirit of the world that looks great to many but leads to a destructive path.

  • GOD wants me to be led by HIS SPIRIT.
  • GOD wants me to make my choices by using HIS SPIRIT.
  • GOD wants me to make HIS secret known, namely that JESUS is the only Savior of the world.

Though the world may scoff at GOD’s SPIRIT, HE is not to be mocked. Every choice I make should be based on the purpose of GOD. “What about me?” the world will place on my mind. I mean, don’t I have to live in the world too? Yes, but HE wants me to live with the purpose HE has given me. I surrender my choice to the power of the HOLY SPIRIT.

  • Are you trying to do things under your own power?
  • Are you seeking the tactics of the world to be “successful” to those around you?
  • Will you allow the HOLY SPIRIT to guide you and be a good steward over what HE has given you today?

From Praise to Hope

 From Praise to Hope

Romans 15: Accept one another, then, for the glory of God, as Christ has accepted you. For I tell you that Christ's life of service was on behalf of the Jews, to show that God is faithful, to make his promises to their ancestors come true, and to enable even the Gentiles to praise God for his mercy. As the scripture says,

“And so I will praise you among the Gentiles;
    I will sing praises to you.”
10 Again it says,
“Rejoice, Gentiles, with God's people!”
11 And again,
“Praise the Lord, all Gentiles;
    praise him, all peoples!”
12 And again, Isaiah says,
“A descendant of Jesse will appear;
    he will come to rule the Gentiles,
    and they will put their hope in him.”

13 May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in him, so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit.

============

“Let’s go on a bike hike” someone older said to us. Having only been out of the neighborhood a few times, I was excited to go on this adventure. We rode further than I had ever ridden in my life. We crossed the railroad tracks and the neighborhood looked different.

When we arrived at a park, the people called us by names of racial hatred. We were chased. I didn’t know much about prayer, but I started saying “Our FATHER…”

  • There have been times when I just wanted to live together.
  • There have been times when I just wanted to enjoy life together.
  • There have been times when I just wanted to have peace, but could not find it because I was not accepted.

Paul’s plea was primarily to the Jews, but was universal in nature. He expressed something that is hard for humans, namely “accept one another.” But how? He then explains why do it. “For the glory of GOD, as CHRIST has accepted you.”

  • GOD wants to show me that HE is faithful to make HIS promises come true.
  • GOD wants to enable me to praise HIM for HIS mercy.
  • GOD wants to be the source of my hope.

Praising GOD for HIS mercy is only the beginning of the relationship. I mean, when I confess I am in need of a Savior, JESUS accepts me, because HIS resurrection to life gave HIM all authority. Now that HE has accepted me, HE wants me to accept others, even those who do not look or act like me.

GOD then wants me to grow beyond confession. HE wants to fill me with joy and peace. But there is one caveat. I must place my faith in HIM. But what if my faith is small and wavering? HE has that covered by placing the HOLY SPIRIT in me. Now my “hope” will continue to grow and I can accept others as CHRIST accepted me.

  • Is your hope small because you feel oppressed?
  • Do you think there is no way out because of another group?
  • Will you add “acceptance” to your heart and believe in JESUS so HE will provide the HOLY SPIRIT, who will grow you with HIS power today?

Exercise Worth Doing

 Exercise Worth Doing

Romans 5: Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. He has brought us by faith into this experience of God's grace, in which we now live. And so we boast of the hope we have of sharing God's glory! We also boast of our troubles, because we know that trouble produces endurance, endurance brings God's approval, and his approval creates hope. This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to us.

============

Malnourishment set in because I did not like most food. In gym class I could not do most of the exercises because I was too weak. I tried climbing the rope, but did not make it far. “Why are we climbing ropes anyway?” I thought to myself. This exercise was not worth doing.

  • There were some circumstances I avoided because I felt it was not worth it.
  • There were some situations I did not want to face because I was too embarrassed or proud.
  • There were some troubles I faced and did not want many people to know about it.

Paul switches from explaining the Law of Moses to talking about how JESUS has brought us by faith into the experience of GOD’s grace. He emphasizes that since we have peace with GOD we can excitedly share hope to many people. We can also see our trouble differently. Trouble is our new exercise that brings on GOD’s approval when we excitedly share it with the same hope.

  • GOD knows I will face difficult times.
  • GOD knows the way out of difficulty is through the prayers of many.
  • GOD wants me to share my trouble with those who will pray with me and for me.

Sharing trouble is not fun, especially if there are a lot of them for a long, long, long time. BUT GOD knows this exercise of sharing brings on endurance. HE needs people who can endure long enough to bring others to HIM. The world is busy trying to emphasize trouble and keep people focused on “their” cure.

GOD wants the focus. HE knows that when I see my trouble as exercise, HE approves my faith as righteousness and fills me with the HOLY SPIRIT. This is exciting enough to share with the world. Yes, I face many troubles, but I am glad GOD approves of me, even if I am afraid, ashamed or worried.

  • Are you in trouble and afraid to share your troubles with a group you feel will judge you?
  • Are you tired of facing, yet another, trouble?
  • Will you take a fresh look at your trouble to see if GOD is giving you an exercise in an area of your life HE wants to strengthen so you can joyously share HIM no matter what storm comes?

Serve and Protect

Acts 20: 25 “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again. 26 Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you. 27 For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. 28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

============

After attending the leadership class, I thought I was ready to lead the department. I mean, I learned skills on how to work with other’s nicely and how to value the opinions of one another.

When the budget meeting came up, the other department leaders acted like voracious wolves, stopping at nothing to get more money and people. “Wait, I thought we were supposed to be nice. Maybe I should be tough like them”

  • There were times when I misinterpreted what a leader should be.
  • There were times when I thought a leader was supposed to build “a” truth for themselves.
  • There were times when I considered lying to others, sabotaging others or protecting “my” ideas so “I” could get credit or noticed.

Paul was making a final plea to the leaders he summoned to meet with. He knew he was called to a place where he might be jailed or killed for speaking about JESUS as LORD and Savior. He gave explicit directions and warnings to the leaders on how to truly lead.

  • GOD wants me to serve others by guarding my own heart with HIS word.
  • GOD wants me to protect HIS flock by explaining JESUS died for all, and those who believe in the need for salvation will be saved through HIM.
  • GOD wants me to watch out for those who will claim to be leaders of the flock, but are really out to protect their status or wallet.

Leading GOD’s people can only be done in Spirit and truth. Unfortunately, there will be many who distort the truth for their convenience. BUT GOD has a remedy. HE revealed just enough of HIS Word for anyone who desires to get to know HIM, to follow.

HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to open my heart and the hearts of those who truly want to follow HIM, to follow the examples of JESUS, knowing HE is the only one who gave HIS “hands” and “feet” on the cross. I am grateful JESUS was and is willing to be the leader of my life.

  • Are you a leader?
  • Do you blame leaders?
  • Will you listen to GOD and become a leader who serves others and protects them with HIS word and the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT today?
