Fifth Plague: Livestock Diseased

Exodus 9: Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. ² For if you refuse to let them go, and still hold them, ³ behold, the hand of the Lord will be on your cattle in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the oxen, and on the sheep—a very severe pestilence. ⁴ And the Lord will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.” ’ ” ⁵ Then the Lord appointed a set time, saying, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this thing in the land.”

WAR between Pharaoh and GOD continued. This was a one-sided fight as GOD continued HIS Warning, Action Response (WAR) structure. This time GOD makes a distinction and says HE is the GOD of the Hebrews.

 

My Observations:

• GOD gave Pharaoh twenty-four hours to let HIS people go.
• GOD told Moses to tell Pharaoh that HE would kill all livestock of the Egyptians and leave the Hebrews livestock alone.
• GOD set a specific time that HE would perform the plague.

 

Having the illusion of control versus really having control are two very different things. Pharaoh had the title and humans followed him will all their hearts, BUT GOD was truly in control. HE said what HE would do to the livestock of the Egyptians and what time HE was going to do it.

 

GOD also made sure that Pharaoh knew HE was making a distinction between Egyptian livestock and those of the Israelites. This way they could not chalk it up to something that happened to everyone. GOD was specifically doing this plague to the Egyptians. They had to choose to follow GOD or gat a plague. GOD was tearing down a mindset of following Pharaoh.

 

Challenge

• Why does GOD remind Moses about the warning HE gave to Pharaoh?
• Has there ever been a time in your life where you refused to follow GOD’s way?
• When GOD has a plan for you that opposes your plan, do you surrender or keep going on your own plan?

Genesis 50: ⁴ Now when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the hearing of Pharaoh, saying, ⁵ ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come back.’ ”

 

⁶ And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

 

⁷ So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, ⁸ as well as all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds they left in the land of Goshen. ⁹ And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen, and it was a very great gathering.

After one hundred ten days, Joseph asked Pharaoh for some time off so that he could bury his father. Pharaoh agreed and Joseph got the funeral processional together.

 

My Observations:

• Israel’s funeral was the largest mentioned in Genesis.
• Egyptians mingled with Hebrews in this strange brief period of unity around mourning.
• GOD cleared the way for Joseph to bury Jacob.

 

The only people left at home were the little kids and the people who would watch over them and the animals. Everyone else went to the funeral. Sarah, Abraham, Rebekah, Isaac and Leah had small unannounced funerals. Rachel was buried in a place that her death happened and her funeral was small.

 

But Jacob’s funeral was pronounced throughout Egypt. People had to know ahy Joseph was going to be away, so they were told. Egyptians and Hebrews joined together to mourn Jacob, who GOD made great despite how he lived. GOD brought unity in a strange way.

 

Challenge

• Why do you think GOD told Moses about Joseph’s permission to bury his father?
• Is your life part of a story that GOD is not finished with?
• Will your story be ended with giving up because it seemed hard or that you pressed on for GOD’s purpose?

Mourned as a Leader

Genesis 50: Then Joseph fell on his father’s face and wept over him, and kissed him. ² And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. ³ Forty days were required for him, for such are the days required for those who are embalmed; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

When Jacob died, Joseph wept and kissed him. He told the Egyptian physicians, who were “his” servants, to embalm his father. This would take forty days. After that, all of Egypt mourned for seventy days.

 

My Observations:

• Egyptians were known for mumification, whereas Jacob simply buried Rachel and Leah.
• Embalming took forty days because it was extremely important to the Egyptians who believed in gods.
• Mourning was ceremonious to the Egyptians, similar to a coronation.

 

Jacob, known as Israel was celebrated as an Egyptian leader because of his relationship with Joseph. Neither Joseph or Jacob were Egyptians, yet they celebrated him as one of their own. GOD put Joseph in a position of power and he was seen as Pharaoh.

 

Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years. My guess is that the Egyptians heard of the stories of Abraham and Isaac during his stay. He was not one to remain silent. He may have had some affect on their beliefs. GOD made Jacob a leader in the middle of a culture who would, otherwise, not accept him.

 

Challenge

• Why does GOD tell Moses about the Egyptian’s mourning of Jacob?
• Is your faith strong enough to affect the culture around you?
• Can you be the salt GOD has called you to be so you can transform the people around you?

Genesis 43: ³² So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. ³³ And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked in astonishment at one another. ³⁴ Then he took servings to them from before him, but Benjamin’s serving was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.

Even though Joseph was appointed governor of al of Egypt, he was still an outsider according to the Egyptians. They set a place for him to eat by himself and they made a spot for themselves. They set Joseph’s brothers in another place and arranged them from oldest to youngest.

 

My Observations:

• Egyptians revered themselves as smarter, stronger and more supreme than any other race.
• Most Hebrews were people who follow GOD and were probably viewed as strange, but dangerous.
• Joseph must have informed the Egyptians about his brothers ages and had them seated accordingly.

 

This seating arrangement spoke volumes about the relationship between Egyptians and the Hebrews. Eating was a special time that could not be shared with Hebrews, according to Egyptian culture. More than likely, a person who interacted too much with Hebrews, would be shunned and lose their place in society.

 

But Joseph was a strange anomaly. He was a slave who was placed over all of Egypt. They had to accept his commands, according to Pharaoh who was seen as a god. They obeyed Joseph and seated his brothers according to their age. He also gave Benjamin five times as much as any of theirs. The brothers celebrated with Benjamin.
