Authority

Luke 4: 31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying,  “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

============

“You can’t sign this?” I was told. “Why?” I questioned. “You do not have the authority to sign a request for the amount greater than your budget. Your boss will need to sign for this.” “Then I have to become the boss” I said to myself.

  • There were times when I wanted to have the authority.
  • There were times when I desired to be in charge.
  • There were times when I wanted to be in control of “my” kingdom.

JESUS spoke with authority and the people were amazed. Instead of teaching from surface knowledge, JESUS probably provided the reason things had to be the way they were. HE then told a demon to leave a person. “Wow!” they thought. “HE really does have authority!”

  • GOD wants me to know that JESUS has all authority.
  • GOD wants me to know that JESUS is in control of my circumstance.
  • GOD wants me to know that JESUS knows about every minute of my life and has already taken care of it.

Long before the world was made JESUS created me with free will. HE knew everything I would go through and the choices I would make. HE still accepted me into HIS family even though I would reject HIS ways, time and time again. I needed saving. Only JESUS has the authority to declare me clean so I owe my eternal life to HIM.

  • Are you seeking power?
  • Do you want your way and are pouting over it?
  • Will you allow JESUS to use HIS authority to show you why you are in this circumstance today?

Mad Enough to Kill

Luke 4: 28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

============

“That’s the last straw” I said out loud. Tired of being pushed around, I went to the gym and started lifting weights. I was so mad at bullies who got their way that I spent hours in the gym sculpting my physique. One day I went to a bar with other muscular guys. One guy with us was very volatile and decided to pick a fight with others. “Wait a minute… this looks familiar” I thought to myself.

  • There were times when I was bullied.
  • There were times when I wanted to be the bully.
  • There were times when I was the bully.

Anger about JESUS claiming to be GOD rose quickly throughout the synagogue. The crowd was so filled with wrath that they wanted to throw JESUS off of a cliff, but HE managed to escape. Their anger rose quickly.

  • GOD wants me to keep my eyes open when I get angry.
  • GOD wants me to add grace and mercy to my anger so I can still hear HIM.
  • GOD wants me to grab hold of my wrath and give it to HIM instead of displaying it to others.

Anger, upset and disgust are the seeds to hatred. When I water them they get planted deeply in my heart and soon I am consumed with wrath. BUT GOD has a remedy. HE placed HIS HOLY SPIRIT in me so HE can guide me away from wrath, back to peace.

GOD wants me to examine my anger and if I cannot diffuse it, give it to HIM. HE desires that I not look at “that” person with disgust but add prayer and love towards them. HE gives me the ability to turn my bitterness into HIS sweet grace filled way.

  • Are you mad?
  • Do you get angry easily?
  • Are you ready to get back at someone?
  • Will you allow GOD to diffuse your anger and replace it with HIS love today?

Hearing Quantities

Luke 4: 23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

============

“How many people showed up?” was the question of the church leaders posed to me. “Two” was my answer. I could see the disappointed and disgusted look on their faces and I felt like they thought I should have done more to make the event successful. “Maybe we should serve free hot dogs” were the next words out of their mouths.

  • People have measured my success on their view of the numbers.
  • People have based their opinions of my success by looking at quantities.
  • People have tried to find the root cause of the problem by looking at numbers.

JESUS told the people, who did not believe HE was the Messiah, that prophets are not accepted in their own neighborhoods. HE sighted two examples of the most powerful prophets, Elijah and Elisha, being rejected and the consequences of the rejection was death, famine and lack of healing. Only small quantities were saved.

  • GOD does not want me to focus on quantity rather quality.
  • GOD wants me to seek HIM with faithfulness rather than measuring everything HE does.
  • GOD wants me to preach HIS word no matter how small the crowd.

Faith is the missing ingredient when it comes to numbers. GOD sends me the number of people HE wants me to talk to and HE sends me to the number of those HE wants me to serve. Whether it’s one or one thousand, my focus should be on what HE wants me to say and how HE wants me to act. Quality is more important than quantity with GOD.

  • Are you ashamed of how many people you serve for GOD?
  • Are you not being heard even though you desire your friends and family to believe fully in CHRIST?
  • Can you have enough faith to allow GOD to work in their lives and you stop trying to force the situation to happen?

Underestimated

Luke 4: 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

============

“Where is he?” I said to myself with a touch of anxiousness. I was given the task of picking up a very wealthy man who was supposed to meet me in the lobby of the hotel, ready to go to the meeting. The only other person in the lobby was a guy in overalls.

After several minutes, another wealthy businessman came to the lobby and recognized me. “Let me introduce you” he said. He walked me over to the guy in the overalls. This was the person I was supposed to pick up.

  • There were times when I underestimated people based on looks.
  • There were times when I underestimated people based on their circumstances.
  • There were times when I underestimated people based on their finances, desires or overt sin.

People in the synagogue said “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” as if to say “How can HE claim to be the Messiah written by the prophet Isaiah?” Many people assumed that GOD’s SON would pop out of thin air and slay those who “they” hated. BUT GOD had other plans.

  • GOD wants me to know HE is not limited by my limited thinking.
  • GOD wants me to know HE is all knowing, all seeing, all powerful and is everywhere.
  • GOD wants me to know HE cares in spite of my misconceptions of HIM.

When GOD cursed the heavens and the earth, HE set in motion something that HE could not take back. Difficulty with relationships, painful birth and hard labor was HIS decree to all humans through Adam and Eve that still stands to this day.

HIS painful declaration was because HIS SON had to voluntarily die to fulfil an oath that only a sinless human could redeem mankind. JESUS was the sacrifice that I should not underestimate.

  • Do you underestimate GOD’s power in your life?
  • Do you think your sin is more powerful than GOD’s redemption?
  • Can you stop thinking you are in control of your life and allow GOD to fill you with enough faith to overflow grace towards all you encounter?

No Coincidence

Luke 4: 16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

============

 “How in the world am I going to get out of this mess?” I said to myself. This time when the car stopped working, it felt final. I was stuck on the side of the road, in the dark in a place that I suspected was not friendly. After a long time of sitting on my trunk, a couple stopped to give me a ride. I was nervous about them because they did not look or sound like me. “Do you know the LORD?’ was one of their questions. I was relieved.

  • I used to think things just happened by chance.
  • I used to think things happened randomly.
  • I used to think I could make things happen.

JESUS went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day and was handed the scroll written by the prophet Isaiah. The timing could not have been more perfect because the verses HE read was about HIM and they described HIS purpose undeniably. Was this a coincidence? No!

  • GOD says to me “MY encounters with you are no coincidence.”
  • GOD says to me “I knew you before I laid the foundations of the world.”
  • GOD says to me “I chose you because of MY SON.”

I may think there are coincidences, but there really are not. Even a dust speck flying in my eye distracting me for a moment is part of GOD’s incredible plan. HE knows my sin and HE knows when I serve HIM with a filled heart.

HE sends people to me to speak about HIM and sometimes HE sends me to people so I can be filled up by them. Dry seasons and seasons of plenty are not flukes but are carefully placed in my life to enable me to be a better ambassador for GOD.

  • Do you wish things happened differently in your life?
  • Do you think situations happen by chance?
  • Will you stop trying to control your life and believe that GOD’s plan for you is a solid well thought out plan?

Fame News

Luke 4: 14 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

============

“This is my chance” I said to myself. I ran towards the crowd, climbed up steps from outside the bannister and smiled towards the camera. The news was at the house of someone being arrested and I kept trying to stick my head behind the newscaster. “Did you see me on TV?” I asked everyone I knew.

  • There were times when I wanted my moment of fame.
  • There were times when I wanted to be noticed.
  • There were times when I wanted everyone to know my name.

JESUS was now ready to face the world having been tempted in every way a human could. HE was led by the power of the SPIRIT to teach what the FATHER wanted for HIS children. HIS teaching was fresh and new unlike the church leaders of the day. HE taught the truth and became famous.

  • JESUS wants me to speak about HIM.
  • JESUS wants me to point at HIS fame, not mine.
  • JESUS wants me to bring people to HIM so they may glorify HIM.

All attention should go to JESUS. Even the HEAVENLY FATHER said “This is MY SON who I AM very pleased.” The entire bible is written about JESUS, yet somehow the church leaders tried to make it about humans and their lack of trying or giving.

GOD doesn’t want me to speak on the inadequacies of humanity, though there are many. HE wants me to speak on the gift that JESUS gave me freely, namely mercy and forgiveness for my sins. HE loves me dearly and wants me to teach that HE loves others too.

  • Are you seeking the spotlight?
  • Do you think you need to be famous in order to be heard?
  • Can you stop seeking fame and allow GOD to speak through you on JESUS’s behalf today?

Checking the Limit

Luke 4:Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’

11 and,

‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’

13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.

============

“I can make it” I said to myself as I raced to catch a plane. I did not factor in spontaneous excessive traffic and I missed the plane. “I can make it” I said again as the low fuel light glowed for miles. I ran out of gas. “I can make it” I said yet again as I sprinted for the train. When I tripped up the stairs my case opened up and papers flew everywhere. I missed the train.

  • There were times when I cut it too close.
  • There were times when I did not get what I was chasing after because I missed the cut off.
  • There were times when I pushed the limit and wound up in worse shape.

JESUS was tempted to commit suicide by the devil. “Push the limit and have the angels save you IF YOU are GOD’s SON” slyly stated the devil. BUT JESUS knew HIS tricks.

  • JESUS says to me “Follow all of MY ways and you will be safe.”
  • JESUS says to me “True freedom comes from the truth and I AM the truth.”
  • JESUS says to me “You shall not tempt the LORD your GOD.”

Staying away from the boundaries has always been the problem with humanity, especially me. Adam and Eve could not stay away from the tree of knowledge, and I have fallen into known sins. BUT JESUS did not get fooled. HE kept every word of GOD in order to redeem me. HE guides me away from the boundaries of sin to the middle of HIS love.

  • Are you busy pushing GOD’s boundaries, trying to see what you can get away with?
  • Do you think that just because you can do something that goes against what GOD says, you will get away with it?
  • Will you stop pushing the limits of GOD and accept HIS love, grace and mercy for you today?

Fine Print

Luke 4:Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”

And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’

============

“Just hang with me and you will be alright” was the promise from one of the higher ups to me. At dinner, he drank until he could hardly speak and flirted with the wait staff.  As I walked him and others to his suite in the convention hotel and he suggested we do this again tomorrow only this time bring more people so we could really party.

  • There were times when I had to decide between career and virtues.
  • There were times when I had to decide between money and character.
  • There were times when I had to decide between the crowd and the lone trail.

As a human JESUS was relegated to decide between supernatural comforts of life versus an uncomfortable low quality human existence. Greed, power, fame and lust were now possibilities presented to JESUS BUT HE knew that the fine print of the contract would cause all humans to be lost.

  • JESUS wants me to decide to follow HIM versus the very tempting roads presented to me.
  • JESUS wants me to decide to follow HIM versus the blind road the world presents.
  • JESUS wants me to decide to follow HIM versus following the fears of money, the lusts for power, and the desires of constant pleasure.

Some of the temptations sound perfectly fine and logical. I mean who wouldn’t want riches and the ability to satisfy any lust one could imagine? GOD says to me “Control yourself and follow MY lead so you may be protected from the world.”

People may laugh at this choice because it doesn’t look “successful.” BUT GOD loves when I follow HIM and ignore the jeers from those who poke fun at my plain life. Being amazed at GOD daily is more important than people temporarily following me for my five minutes of fame.

  • Are you seeking fame and power?
  • Do you think you would be better off if you were extremely wealthy?
  • Can you stop trying to fix your problems with money and give all your issues to the LORD who knows just what to do with them?

Identity Meal

Luke 4:And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’

============

“Aren’t you in charge?” questioned the salesperson trying to poke at my ego. The decision could cost the company millions so my answer had to be correct. “Being in charge is not what is in question right now” was my reply.

  • Some people have questioned “my” authority and it made me furious.
  • Some people have checked up on me even when I said who I was.
  • Some people have doubted “my” role even when they knew what my role was.

“If YOU are the SON of GOD” were the words the devil used to question JESUS’s validity of being the CHRIST. His next ploy was to tempt JESUS into doing parlor tricks with HIS infinite power.  JESUS showed me extreme constraint.

  • GOD wants me to grow in power to forgive those who are hard to forgive.
  • GOD wants me to grow in strength to have mercy on those who get on my last nerve.
  • GOD wants me to grow in courage to speak about HIM instead of easily conforming to what the world would say.

JESUS had the choice of eating a meal to prove HIS identity to the devil or possibly dying because HE had not eaten in forty days. JESUS chose to put HIS circumstance in the FATHER’s hands implying “I would rather die following what is right than to be comfortable for two seconds.”

GOD wants me to do the same. HE wants me to sometimes say “No” to the plot of the world. When the world says “Why don’t you work hard for moments of pleasure and stuff” GOD wants me to think about HIS kingdom and chose HIS way.

Sometimes I choose pleasure, BUT GOD rewards me when I say “I will not live by bread alone, but by every word of GOD.”

  • Are you caught up in trying to prove who you are to people?
  • Do you think a title or a contract or a job will define you?
  • Can you stop thinking about “what” defines you rather than “WHO” defines you, namely GOD?

Wilderness Training

Luke 3: Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

============

“Do you want to hang out with us?” was code for “Let’s go out drinking, dancing and laughing all night.” Yes was my normal answer, but this time a strange word came out of my mouth. “No” I said. One guy would not take “no” for an answer. “There will be lots of honey’s there” he said trying to change my answer. “Hmm, I don’t have anything to do.” I thought to myself.

  • There was a time when the purpose of my life was focused on maximizing relaxation.
  • There was a time when I pursued as much pleasure as possible.
  • There was a time when I spent an enormous amount of time and money on “fun.”

JESUS was led into the wilderness by the HOLY SPIRIT. For forty days HE did not experience pleasure or comfort. HE did not eat so HIS body was weak. At HIS weakest moments the devil tempted HIM, but HE held strong. Each temptation HE denied only made HIM stronger.

  • JESUS wants me to bypass temptation little by little in order to get stronger.
  • JESUS wants me to purposefully focus on growing in HIM little by little.
  • JESUS wants me to follow HIS example knowing I will fail, but try again and again with HIS help.

JESUS had to remain sinless in order to redeem a sinful world. HE does not require me to be sinless, because I cannot redeem mankind. HE does want me to know that the less I sin the more of HIS power can be shown.

HE somehow rewards me when I turn from temptation, but it takes practice in order to do it. HE sees when I fail, but more importantly HE sees when I succeed in passing up the temptation in order to further HIS kingdom. JESUS knows my every weakness and still has total grace for me.

  • Do you feel like a failure to GOD?
  • Do you feel like you are not being good enough?
  • Will you stop trying so hard to be good and allow GOD to transform you little by little at HIS pace to do HIS will?

Background Check

Luke 3: 23 Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 25 the son of Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, 27 the son of Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 29 the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the sonof Eliakim, 31 the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

============

Fascinated with my ancestry, I asked my parents and grandparents to remember names of relatives as far back as they could go. I was amazed at the fortitude of my family and wondered how we even survived.

  • Family history has strengthened my relationship with GOD.
  • Family history has shown me the good and the bad of humanity.
  • Family history has given me faith in GOD who controls everything.

JESUS’s human lineage was traced back to the first human, Adam. It is a wonder humanity survived. HIS ancestry was spread over years of violence that almost wiped out humans, BUT GOD intervened.

  • GOD’s plan cannot be altered by wars and rumors of wars that affect my family.
  • GOD’s plan cannot be changed by people in my ancestry who may have made huge mistakes.
  • GOD’s plan cannot be modified by the difficulties of life that hurt my family.

Whether it was a depression, slavery or a hostile takeover of a neighboring village, my ancestors made it by the grace of GOD. JESUS shows me that good can come out of hurt and life can spring out of meager beginnings.

  • Are you blaming your family on where you are?
  • Do you think the circumstances of the times altered your family history so you would either fail or succeed?
  • Can you look at the history of your family and be amazed that GOD has your ancestry as part of HIS amazing plan for you?

That’s what it’s all about

Luke 3: 21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

============

One single endorsement was all that was needed. JESUS prayed and the HEAVENLY FATHER opened up heaven and said “YOU are MY beloved SON; in YOU I AM well pleased.” This statement declared JESUS as being the SON of GOD.

  • JESUS became a human to save me.
  • JESUS lived HIS life sinless as an example to me.
  • JESUS was baptized to show me what I should do to others.

Life is all about JESUS. HE guides me and many others through HIS HOLY SPIRIT. HE loves like no other and pursues me daily. JESUS along with the HOLY SPIRIT and the FATHER are always there for me.

  • Have you pondered JESUS?
  • Do you recognize that JESUS is GOD?
  • Can you focus your attention on HIS power today?

Meeting Expectations

Luke 3: 15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18 And with many other exhortations he preached to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him concerning Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 20 also added this, above all, that he shut John up in prison.

============

Nervously I opened my mouth and told a person about my belief in CHRIST. I could not tell if he was joking or not about his thought on GOD’s existence but I was moved to say something at the lunchroom table.

When the words came out, I felt better and did not care as much whether I would be labeled as weird. This was my first time speaking about GOD to someone outside of my comfort zone.

  • There were times when I wanted to just blend into the crowd.
  • There were times when I wanted to simply be like everyone else.
  • There were times when I wanted to meet the crowd’s expectation of me and fit in like the rest.

The people set expectations on John by asking “Who is this guy?” Some said he was The CHRIST, others thought he was a prophet, but all had to listen to him as he spoke candidly about their sins, even royalty. GOD wants me to speak up as well.

  • JESUS says to me “I will baptize people with the HOLY SPIRIT and with fire.”
  • JESUS says to me “I will gather the wheat you plant in the souls of people I send to you or send you to.”
  • JESUS says to me “I will burn up the wasted efforts of those who do not turn to ME.”

Life is short. Everything I do and say will one day be accounted for and it is up to me to listen to the HOLY SPIRIT each day in order to make the best out of life. When I am not selfish and follow what GOD wants me to do, HE counts it as fruit and rewards me generously.

  • What are you spending your time on?
  • Are you squeezing GOD out of your life to the point that you cannot hear HIM?
  • Do you spend enormous amounts of time meeting human’s expectations?
  • Can you stop trying to please people and look to pleasing GOD today?

Driven Career

Luke 3: 14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

============

“Be cool” was the thought that ran through my mind as the negotiations continued. The opposition was trying to play hardball and I had to do the same. In order to get more money, I may need to flex my power to show them who is really in charge.

  • There were times when I thought intimidation was the key to success.
  • There were times when I thought getting “tougher” was best for “my” career.
  • There were times when I thought climbing the ladder meant taking others down so I could make more money.

Soldiers of certain leaders would not only protect their king, but would sometimes hurt people to take their money, falsely accuse people in order to take their homes and grouse about how little they made in wages. John saw through their question with the aid of the HOLY SPIRIT. His message speaks to me.

  • GOD wants me to desire to have peace with people.
  • GOD wants me to use my power for grace and mercy versus violence and intimidation.
  • GOD wants me to be content with my wages knowing HE is the one who sustains me.

Wow! Everything in this passage seemed to go against what the “successful” people would tell me. I mean those who would tell me to “get tough” are the same people who would tell me I would never have “enough” money. BUT GOD says something different.

GOD wants me to be tough enough to stand up for those who are wronged. HE desires that I trade in my intimidation for compassion. When I get paid for my services, HE wants me to be excited rather than in a constant state of complaint. HE wants me in a state of grace and peace.

  • Are you discontent?
  • Do you have a complaint about where GOD has you?
  • Can you ask GOD for peace with people and contentment for where HE has you?

Desire to Win

Luke 3: 12 Then tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?”
13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than what is appointed for you.”

============

“How did you beat him?” I asked. “It’s my secret” was the reply. I watched him play the game again and noticed he was taking money out of the bank as his opponent wasn’t looking. He was cheating! This seemed like a great idea. “Maybe now I can win” I thought to myself.

  • There were times when I would do whatever it would take to win.
  • There were times when I would stretch the truth in order to win.
  • There were times when I would cut corners, stack the deck and lean things in my favor in order to win.

John said to the tax collectors “Collect no more than what is appointed for you” knowing most of them would skim a lot off the top for themselves. The industry was corrupt and it was widely accepted amongst people so their practices, while sneaky, were accepted. BUT GOD wants me to act differently.

  • GOD says to me “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is HIS delight.”
  • GOD says to me “The LORD wants weights and measures to be honest and every sale to be fair.”
  • GOD says to me “Use honest scales, honest weights, and honest measures. I am the LORD your GOD, and I brought you out of Egypt.”

Honesty should be placed higher than winning every time. The desire to please GOD is in fact “winning” every time I play. Whether it is a game or a business deal, GOD wants me to ask HIM “How do you want me to handle this transaction?” HE can decide the outcome and when HE does, I win every time because I accept GOD’s will.

  • Are you hung up on winning?
  • Do you lie to yourself in order to justify your actions?
  • Can you stop trying to win and start listening to GOD who always has a great plan for you?

Direct Response

Luke 3: 10 So the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?”
11 He answered and said to them, “He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”

============

“Who will help us visit the sick?” was the question. No one raised their hand, especially me. I mean the timing was all wrong. I had car trouble I had to handle and a huge project due and my family had some other needs. Maybe someone else can do it.

  • There were times when I wanted organizations to handle support of people.
  • There were times when I gave money to organizations so they could support other people.
  • There were times when I felt organizations would take care of people when I became too busy.

Some earnest people asked John, “What shall we do then?” in response to his wake up message that attacked their reason for being in the wilderness to get baptized. John wanted them to be genuine in their service and he gave them only a couple of examples that would require a change of heart.

  • GOD wants me to sometimes give directly to people instead of always giving to organizations.
  • GOD wants me to sometimes serve people directly instead of serving a crowd.
  • GOD wants me to sometimes meet an individual’s needs instead of depending on an organization to do it.

Directly responding to a specific person’s needs feels different. The timing is never right nor can I ever do enough. BUT GOD is pleased when I meet the needs of “that” person this day. HE gets excited when I look out for one of HIS children. GOD wants me to have responsibility.

  • What specific person are you serving?
  • Can you take some of you busy time to serve a person?
  • Will you take some of your excess and give it to a specific person GOD leads you to give to?

People Checklist

Luke 3: Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

============

Looking at my calendar I realized I was triple booked with events. I made an appearance at each gathering spending only minutes with the host. I made sure they knew I was there and had the best intentions, but I was busy. In later years, I was triple booked again, only this time it was for funerals.

  • There were times when I went to a lot of events.
  • There were times when I spent more time going to the events than being at the event.
  • There were times when I wanted to be seen at the event than actually “being” at the event.

John was filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and discerned the hearts of those who came out to be baptized. Some people may have come there because everyone else was there or to be seen by the ”right” people. He tried to change their perspective because some of the crowd may have felt they deserved to be there because their families were long time church goers.

  • GOD wants me to serve others with my heart filled with HIS love.
  • GOD wants me to not to think more highly of myself because I attend church.
  • GOD wants me to bear fruit worthy of repentance rather than “looking good” on the outside and being rotten on the inside.

Having people on a checklist is not always the best. I do understand that I cannot save everyone and if I do not set boundaries, I could burn myself out. BUT GOD does want me to spend quality time with people so I can bear HIS fruit.

Only GOD’s fruit is good. HE looks at my heart and can tell when I am bearing fruit for myself rather than for HIM. HE wants me to point to HIM by sitting and crying and laughing and praying with people all while pointing to HIS amazing grace for me. HE want me to be there for people rather than check listing my appearance.

  • Are you treating GOD as a checklist item?
  • Do you sympathize with people?
  • Can you spend some quality time with those who need you today?

In Control

Luke 3: Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.
Every valley shall be filled

And every mountain and hill brought low;
The crooked places shall be made straight
And the rough ways smooth;
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ”

A friend of mine became a crossing guard. Ten minutes before the end of day school bell, he would get up and leave class. When I saw him get up, I started getting my stuff together and got up as well.

The teacher asked, “Where are you going?” “To help him” I replied. “Sit down” she replied. When the bell rang I raced to the corner to “help.” I stood there directing students and traffic.

  • There were times when I wanted to feel important.
  • There were times when I wanted to lead people.
  • There were times when I wanted to be in control of something.

John spoke about JESUS in a mighty way. His compelling words resonate today as he spoke of trading in sin for belief in CHRIST. John taught people of the One who would truly be in control.

  • JESUS wants me to speak about HIS power over the physical earth.
  • JESUS wants me to speak about HIS return will changing the physical properties of the earth as well as the moral attitude of the world.
  • JESUS wants me to prepare the way for HIS imminent return.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah” is what people say when people speak about JESUS’ return. They place people in the crazy category who speak of what seems to be a Hollywood tale of a higher being returning. BUT GOD wants me to speak about JESUS anyway, despite the labels.

HE is and will always be in control of the heavens and the earth. HE has the power over life and death and one day will show HIS face to all. I, like John must prepare as many people as GOD allows, to help people praise HIM the way HE should be praised.

  • Are you ashamed of your calling?
  • Do you fit in and look like everyone around you?
  • Is GOD calling you to speak of HIS return, bringing life and peace to those who believe in HIM?

Earned Favor

Luke 2: 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

============

“Here… take my keys and lock up” were the surprisingly nice words from a very grumpy boss. I mean he never spoke to me and when he did, he barked at me. “Good job” were his next words. I almost fainted on the bowling balls.

  • There were times when I have earned favor.
  • There have been people who have granted me favor.
  • There were times when I received favor from people and had no idea why I received it.

As JESUS got older, HE became wiser, taller and, more importantly, grew in favor with HIS FATHER. But what does favor mean? Was JESUS laughing at crass jokes that were out of character for HIM? Was HE out to please people by compromising HIS beliefs? No!

  • JESUS says to me “Serve people while fearing ME.”
  • JESUS says to me “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”
  • JESUS says to me “Fear GOD and keep HIS commandments.”

Fearing GOD means I don’t want to disappoint HIM. I know I have been saved and HE will not allow me to lose the salvation HE gave me as a gift. I still don’t want to disappoint GOD by being foolish or bending HIS rules to get my way.

GOD has done so much for me that I seek to serve HIM any chance I can. I desire to please GOD more than pleasing humans who, at the drop of a hat, change what pleases them. GOD has already given me full favor but strangely I do not want to take advantage and assume there are no consequences for my actions. I live to please GOD.

  • Are you stuck where you are?
  • Do you find yourself wanting but not getting?
  • Can you give your sins, your desires and your wants to GOD and let HIM do with them as HE pleases?
