Given a Peek into the Plan

Given a Peek into the Plan

Genesis 18: 16 Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. 17 And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, 18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” 20 And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”

============

JESUS and the angels had another reason for showing up. While they told Abraham and Sarah, they would miraculously have a child, they also came to judge Sodom and Gomorrah.

My Observations:

  • GOD did not have to tell Abraham about the plan, but informed him, possibly as a warning to everyone.
  • GOD gave Abraham directions on how to act by telling him to “keep the way of the LORD.”
  • GOD made sure the future of Abraham’s children would continue if they did “righteousness and justice.”

GOD allowed people to freely sin, possibly showing grace that humans would question. HE does not mention the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in these words, but later Abraham knew that’s what was going to happen. GOD’s grace for sin seems strange to those who want to see HIM apply HIS judgement, but what’s missing in this blind view is maybe GOD is showing you, the reader, grace to give you time to turn to HIM.

The people in Sodom and Gomorrah had sinned enough. GOD’s ways are not our ways, so HE allowed the sin to reach a certain point, then HE said to Abraham, HE was going to put an end to it. This group of people were intelligent enough to create the human’s version of the Garden of Eden. Wells watered the plants so there was plenty.

But where there was plenty, there was sin. They had done everything without following GOD or listening to HIM. Eventually they had reached a level of depravity that was so great, GOD had to put an end to it. GOD intervened and included Abraham in on the plan.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD waits to intervene when we sin?
  • Are you busy questioning why GOD does things the way HE does without seeing if HE is giving you grace?
  • Are you willing to surrender your thoughts, ways and actions to GOD, so JESUS can be LORD of your life today?

Never Again!

Never Again!

Revelation 18: 21 Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “This is how the great city Babylon will be violently thrown down and will never be seen again. 22 The music of harps and of human voices, of players of the flute and the trumpet, will never be heard in you again! No workman in any trade will ever be found in you again; and the sound of the millstone will be heard no more! 23 Never again will the light of a lamp be seen in you; no more will the voices of brides and grooms be heard in you. Your merchants were the most powerful in all the world, and with your false magic you deceived all the peoples of the world!”

24 Babylon was punished because the blood of prophets and of God's people was found in the city; yes, the blood of all those who have been killed on earth.

When the police arrived at the bowling alley, they asked me to identify one of the thugs who chased me. “Is this one of the people who were after you?” was the ludicrous question asked of me.

  • I had just freshly ran away from danger and the police brought it back in my face!
  • I worried that any jail time the thug would face would be short and I would have a problem later on.
  • I did not believe the thug would permanently leave me alone.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, was shown a mighty angel pick up a stone, throwing it into the sea, and said many declarations about how the great city would “never again” do the harm on humanity it once did.

My Observations:

  • GOD’s judgment is permanent and cannot be reversed.
  • GOD will put an end to any torment HIS people faced throughout all of history.
  • GOD sees any injustice done to anyone who believes in JESUS.

When GOD does away with evil, it will be permanent. I mean, there will be no retaliation, no pop up problems and no embarrassing confrontations with evil people who could cause future problems.

JESUS has been raised from the dead and that is not the end! HE went to build a new heaven and a new earth. HE sent the HOLY SPIRIT to live inside those who believe, to protect and give purpose to tell others about our risen Savior. I am glad I will, one day, never face problems again!

Challenge

  • What reason does the writer give for the punishment of the great city?
  • Have you ever feared to tell on someone who harmed you or lied on you or stole from you?
  • Have you considered believing in JESUS as your Savior and life support today?

I Got This

I Got This

Revelation 1: 16 He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came out of his mouth. His face was as bright as the midday sun. 17 When I saw him, I fell down at his feet like a dead man. He placed his right hand on me and said, “Don't be afraid! I am the first and the last. 18 I am the living one! I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I have authority over death and the world of the dead. 19 Write, then, the things you see, both the things that are now and the things that will happen afterward. 20 Here is the secret meaning of the seven stars that you see in my right hand, and of the seven gold lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

Nervous to say anything, I approached a teacher about a bully. She said, “Don’t worry I will take care of it.”  To my discomfort, she brought the bully in and talked with both of us. His bullying did stop for a while.

  • I thought she was going to turn my problem into a larger problem.
  • I thought she did not understand the urgency of the situation.
  • I thought she had the authority, but was using it wrong and was supposed to punish bullies.

John, the disciple who JESUS loved, saw HIM in HIS glorious state. No picture or painting could depict what John saw. John fainted at the sight of JESUS because it was overwhelming. JESUS comforted John by explaining that HE has overcome death and holds the world in HIS hand.

My Observations:

  • JESUS is not worried about the sinful attacks on you and me because HE has overcome sin.
  • The world may come up with a hypothesis, BUT GOD has the world under HIS control.
  • No word, no situation or circumstance is unseen by JESUS, so I can place my trust in HIS solution.

“I got this” is a term used by someone in authority. JESUS said “Do not be afraid” because HE is the first and the last. HE explained HIS credentials by saying “I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever.” HE then said “I have authority over death and the world.”  In other words, “I got this!”

When I turn my eyes to situations where humans feel they are in control, all I need to do is step back and give them over to GOD. JESUS, who is the Word, has a two edged sword that comes out of HIS mouth that will judge the inhabitants of the seven continents. HE has angels over your situation and mine so do not be afraid.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer fainted?
  • Have you ever been overwhelmed, thinking about how messed up the world is today?
  • Will you place your trust in JESUS, who has all authority and sees those who attempt to get their way, without placing HIM in their hearts, so HE can protect you from their evil plans, forever?

Seeking Good Times

Seeking Good Times

1 Peter 3:To conclude: you must all have the same attitude and the same feelings; love one another, and be kind and humble with one another. Do not pay back evil with evil or cursing with cursing; instead, pay back with a blessing, because a blessing is what God promised to give you when he called you. 10 As the scripture says,

“If you want to enjoy life
and wish to see good times,
you must keep from speaking evil
    and stop telling lies.
11 You must turn away from evil and do good;

you must strive for peace with all your heart.
12 For the Lord watches over the righteous

    and listens to their prayers;
but he opposes those who do evil.”

============

Wanting a better assignment, I lied about my age. I said I was two years older than I was so that maybe my years of experience would seem like more than they were. I was still considered a rookie and I wanted to shake that perception.

  • I lied to get ahead.
  • I didn’t consider my lie as harmful.
  • I showed my immaturity when I argued, fussed and fought instead of being above negative conversations.

Peter continues to provide some difficult lessons. He knew there would be some who would do evil to those who did good. His advice was to be above evil by paying back with good. He also used a Psalm from David to change the mindset. “Keep from speaking evil.”

My Observations

  • Striving for “good times” must include me telling the truth.
  • For me to “enjoy life” I must be able to rest, which means telling the truth.
  • Doing “good” and striving for “peace” gives me the makings for a life filled with good times.

Evil, brings on more evil. I mean, when someone does or says something bad to me or about me, I want to retaliate. I get my argument ready and maybe even think of ways to tear “that” person down. BUT GOD wants me to act different.

HE wants me above petty arguments to focus on HIM. HE wants “good” and “peace” to flow from me. This means I have to make a decision. I have to slow down, step away from the evil and speak the truth in live when the time is right. I am glad GOD gives me courage to speak truth.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention “pay back?”
  • Have you ever been provoked by an evil attack and wanted to retaliate?
  • Will you take the high road next time and seek “good times” by doing good in GOD’s sight today?

Community

Community

Romans 12: Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. 10 Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another. 11 Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. 12 Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times. 13 Share your belongings with your needy fellow Christians, and open your homes to strangers.

============

“Leave him alone!” someone shouted at the bully who was about to attack me. I had taken a shortcut through an unfamiliar neighborhood and was just about to enter familiar territory when I ran into this guy. I did not know the person who came to my rescue, but it was welcome. I breathed a sigh of relief as I walked through my community.

  • There were places I lived where I felt at home.
  • There were places I lived where I felt safe and secure.
  • There were places I lived where I felt I was being watched over versus picked over.

Paul provides an overlooked definition of love, namely community. This act of love is quite different because it requires an explosion of energy towards a group of people. The act of love must be completely sincere.

  • GOD wants me to hate what is evil and hold onto what is good so I can protect others.
  • GOD wants me to be eager to show respect to others to help them grow.
  • GOD wants me to work hard in my community, serving HIM with full devotion, remaining patient in troubled times, praying, sharing and opening my home to strangers.

Community can start where I live. I mean, I can serve those who live in my apartment, dorm or block. If anyone wants to do evil to those around me, I can stand in the gap for the injustice. GOD is very serious about how HIS creations is treated. HE sees when each person has been wronged.

HE wants me to bring community to people who may not have experienced HIS love. I can take community to work, social gatherings and relatives. GOD wants my community to grow and I can do it with love.

  • Are you around a group pf people yet you feel lonely?
  • Do you expect people to show you love first?
  • Will you start small by showing people respect and serving those in need with your talents and treasures today?

Dirty But Functional

Dirty But Functional

Romans 7: So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

============

Snow was coming down in the frigid temperatures. Salt was used to melt the snow on the roads in this region. Blowing winds and a sloppy mess caused my windshield to become so dirty, I used up all of the windshield washer fluid.

With a long way to drive, I had to pull over to wipe off the windshield. I opened the trunk and all I had was a dirty grimy towel that I sometimes used to wipe off oily stuff. I found one small corner of the towel that was clean enough to wipe away enough dirt to keep going.

  • That dirty towel reminds me of the dirty stuff I do.
  • That dirty towel was stained so much, that it seemed like it could never be used to clean anything.
  • That dirty towel was resurrected from the trunk and was now made useful to make something clean.

Paul explains what JESUS did for humanity. He states that those who believe in JESUS have also died to the Law. In other words, the Law shows all humans are guilty and deserve death. All humans sin, which causes other humans to sin. BUT GOD took the dirt away.

  • GOD saw my sins and cleaned my heart so HE could use me.
  • GOD knows my righteousness is like a filthy rag, yet HE placed HIS HOLY SPIRIT in me anyway.
  • GOD allowed JESUS to become the filthy, dirty, blamed thing to die just for me and HE raised HIM from the dead, clean, to have all authority.

When JESUS was raised from the dead, HE was given all power to clean those who believe in HIM. I mean, the Law no longer holds the sentence of death for me because JESUS freed me from my sins.

HE knows I still sin so HE takes the tiny corner of faith I have to wipe off some of the dirt from someone else’s eyes. HE then takes it one step further. HE opens my eyes and that persons’ eyes to see it was HIM that did all the cleaning. I am grateful JESUS can still use a dirty, but functional person like me.

  • Do you think your sins are too big to be used by GOD?
  • Are you being convicted for the sins you did last night or are planning to do today?
  • Will you stop thinking you can clean yourself up and allow JESUS to clean your heart so HE can use your dirty story to help someone believe in HIM today?

Out of Sight Out of Mind

Out of Sight Out of Mind

Romans 6: 20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. 21 And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. 22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

============

Dirty underwear, toys and stuff I found outside were shoved under my bed. The directive was to “clean my room.” I cleaned the room in record time. I knocked everything onto the floor, pushed it under the bed and sat down with a grin. As long as no one looked under the bed, I would never be suspected of being a slob.

  • Many times I have hidden things I was ashamed of.
  • Many times I shoved what I was ashamed of, into hidden places.
  • Many times I hid the garbage to have the appearance of looking clean.

Paul explains that we are no longer slaves to sin. He tries to reason with everyone about the temporary nature of sin. It brings on pleasure for a moment, but causes people to do things that remain hidden. If the thing was so “good” then why not say it to everyone? Paul then provides the right way, namely to do those things that lead to holiness.

  • GOD wants me to step out of the dark, hidden places and show HIS light.
  • GOD wants me to do things that I am not ashamed of.
  • GOD wants me to be bold enough to accept HIS free gift of love which is eternal life through CHRIST JESUS our LORD.

Shame causes me to seek more shame. I may even find a group of people who accept the shameful things I do so I can feel “good” about myself. BUT GOD wants something different.

Instead of seeking destruction, covering it up and pretending everything is fine, GOD wants me to seek HIS path which leads to HIS holiness and HIS eternal life. Giving up sin is sometimes hard, especially when I practice hiding it. BUT GOD helps me by providing courage to express my sin, little by little. I am grateful for JESUS who freed me from my path to death.

  • What are you shoving under your bed?
  • Do you pretend to be “good” or do you seek a crowd that will accept what you do?
  • Will you seek what GOD wants for you so HE can guide you to an abundant everlasting life?

No Longer Rules

No Longer Rules

Romans 6: For since we have become one with him in dying as he did, in the same way we shall be one with him by being raised to life as he was. And we know that our old being has been put to death with Christ on his cross, in order that the power of the sinful self might be destroyed, so that we should no longer be the slaves of sin. For when we die, we are set free from the power of sin. Since we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that Christ has been raised from death and will never die again—death will no longer rule over him. 10 And so, because he died, sin has no power over him; and now he lives his life in fellowship with God. 11 In the same way you are to think of yourselves as dead, so far as sin is concerned, but living in fellowship with God through Christ Jesus.

============

Fearing embarrassment, I did not want to bowl. But when I learned, it was fun. After years of enjoyment, my score got better and better. I entered a tournament and feared the outcome. What if I do poorly? I said to myself. I did better than I expected. While I did not win, I no longer had fear of being in tournaments.

  • There have been many times when I feared something and it prevented me from trying.
  • There have been many times when I failed at something and I feared messing up again.
  • There have been many times when I did not want to go through the trouble of trying because I feared I would be criticized, or even ostracized.

Paul writes about the gripping hold sin has on people. He refers to sin as a slave owner that provides no freedom. The sin dictates what to do and how to do it. Death was always the prize when the person is owned by sin. BUT JESUS freed humanity by overcoming death.

  • JESUS died for me so I am no longer owned by my sins.
  • JESUS is alive so HIS power over my sins is infinite.
  • JESUS enabled me to have fellowship with HIM by facing death for me.

Sin makes me make regretful decisions that usually lead to nowhere. I mean, when I make fearful decisions, thinking I am protecting myself, the situation has always turned out bad anyway. To make it worse, I try to be good for a minute, and that effort seems to fail.

GOD has already shown me extreme grace, patience and love. HE simply wants me to realize this so I do not have to rely on sin to make my decisions. I can put sin to death and rely on JESUS, who is my Savior.  I am glad HE overcame my sin so I can live in freedom.

  • Is something holding you back?
  • Are you letting fear, doubt and worry lead you?
  • Will you allow JESUS to guide you so you can lead a victorious and abundant life, filled with HIS love today?

Being Known

Acts 19: 11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

Traveling with the top executive of the company had its perks. We had a long layover at an airport so we went to an exclusive area where we could wait and eat. When I got to the door they asked me my name. I told her and she replied “I’m sorry, we don’t have your name on our list.” “Oh, he’s with me” the executive said. They let me in. “One day…” I said to myself.

  • There were times when I wanted to be known.
  • There were times when I wanted to be in the club.
  • There were times when I wanted to have a name for myself, not just ride on someone else’s name.

GOD did extraordinary miracles through Paul. Seven sons of Sceva saw Paul’s popularity and tried to fight demons using JESUS’ and Paul’s names. One demon replied, “JESUS I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Their desire to be known backfired.

  • GOD is pleased with me because I gave my life to HIM.
  • GOD knows me through my relationship with JESUS.
  • GOD has written my name in HIS hand so no one can rip me away from HIS saving grace.

Being known by GOD is the single most important relationship to crave. Celebrities rise and fall, BUT GOD remains forever. Exclusive clubs where humans gather will be torn down as JESUS steps into the picture upon HIS return. Until then, GOD wants me to make HIS name known even if people do not know my name. I am glad JESUS knows me and I know HIM.

  • Are you seeking to make a name for yourself?
  • Do you want to be known by associating your name with a celebrity?
  • Will you stop seeking the spotlight for a moment and allow JESUS to be known through you?

True Power

Luke 13: 31 On that very day some Pharisees came, saying to Him, “Get out and depart from here, for Herod wants to kill You.”

32 And He said to them, “Go, tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.’ 33 Nevertheless I must journey today, tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem.

============

Threats from a bully ruined yet another day, only this time is frightened the entire school. Somehow, the rumor of another school coming to ours to start fights, was taken seriously. “How am I going to get home?” I thought to myself.

  • There have been many humans who threaten other humans.
  • There have been times when the powerful try to force their power on other humans.
  • There have been situations that seem wildly out of hand.

There were church leaders who believed in JESUS, but feared for HIS life, for they did not truly know who HE was and is. They said “Flee, for Herod wants to kill YOU.” JESUS called Herod a fox and expressed HIS power as GOD. Why didn’t JESUS fear for HIS life?

  • JESUS knew when HE was going to lay HIS life down for me.
  • JESUS knew the date, time and location of HIS death, and still faced it for me.
  • JESUS knew HE had all power, yet HE chose to lay it down for me.

Fire from heaven sounded like a great idea as a quick judgment on Herod’s threat. That’s probably what I would have done. BUT JESUS showed restraint, which is the true power. HE allowed HIS own creation to murder HIM even though HE committed no crime or sin. But what about the bullies I face.

On my walk home, I was scared but I believed I would be protected. The school let us out a few minutes early and I could feel a weight lifted from my fear. Daily it seems like there is a threat on my peace, BUT GOD is there to protect my soul with HIS true power.

  • Are you down?
  • Did humans threaten your plans and now you don’t know what to do?
  • Can you give GOD more credit for loving you and believe HE is protecting you today?
