Genesis 37: ¹² Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. ¹³ And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.”

So he said to him, “Here I am.”

¹⁴ Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.

¹⁵ Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”

¹⁶ So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.”

¹⁷ And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.

After telling his father and brothers his dream, Joseph was left alone with Israel. He spoke to Joseph, telling him to go see what his brothers were doing in Shechem. A “certain” man found Joseph wandering and told him where his brothers were. Joseph went to Dothan to find his brothers.

 

My Observations:

• Israel seemed to only trust Joseph.
• Joseph’s brothers left Shechem to go to Dothan, probably because they wanted to go to a place where they were less known.
• GOD knew Joseph was about to be put in danger.

 

Shechem was the place where Simeon and Levi massacred all the townsmen. It must have been several years later that Joseph was sent to Shechem by Israel. A “certain” man saw Joseph. Was this man sent by GOD? It does not say. But GOD knew Joseph would fall prey to his brothers.

 

Joseph sought his brothers and was walking into a trap. His brothers may have left Shechem on purpose, so they could carry out their evil plan. Joseph was looking to report on his brothers, but would walk directly into their trap.

 

Challenge

• Why did GOD tell Moses about the conversation between Israel and Joseph?
• Have you ever walked into a trap?
• Was the trap you fell into, the beginning of a great testimony for GOD’s rescue and protection of you?

Genesis 34: ²⁵ Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males. ²⁶ And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out. ²⁷ The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. ²⁸ They took their sheep, their oxen, and their donkeys, what was in the city and what was in the field, ²⁹ and all their wealth. All their little ones and their wives they took captive; and they plundered even all that was in the houses.

Waiting for the pain to reach its peak, Simeon and Levi went out to kill all the men of Shechem, including Hamor and Shechem. They took all the women and children and possessions for themselves. The plan for revenge had worked. Or so they thought.

 

My Observations:

• Not all of the sons of Jacob agreed to kill the men of Shechem.
• Simeon and Levi were the most offended by the violation of Dinah.
• Jacob was renamed to Israel by GOD, and this act of violence was the beginning of trouble for Israel.

 

Up until this point, the family chosen by GOD had no enemies. Even Laban was told by GOD to leave Jacob alone. But now Simeon and Levi caused a huge mess. They killed out of revenge. You and I may feel the same way as Simeon and Levi, wanting revenge. But unfortunately, the long-term relationships with surrounding people would prove to be extremely difficult.

 

Simeon and Levi could not leave it alone. This act of violation was extremely difficult, but their form of justice would bring on problems for Israel that may be going on to this very day. GOD saw the revenge that HE should have owned.

• Why did GOD tell Moses about the revenge of Simeon and Levi?
• Have you ever wanted revenge?
• Can you allow GOD to own revenge so HE will take care of the situation HIS way and in HIS time?

Opportunity Blindness

Genesis 34: ²⁰ And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying: ²¹ “These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them dwell in the land and trade in it. For indeed the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us as wives, and let us give them our daughters. ²² Only on this condition will the men consent to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. ²³ Will not their livestock, their property, and every animal of theirs be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.” ²⁴ And all who went out of the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

Hamor and Shechem got so excited about the possibility of becoming even more wealthy than they were, that they told all the men about it. They persuaded the men to become circumcised as part of the peace treaty.

 

My Observations:

• Hamor and Shechem were fooled by the sons of Jacob into thinking they were at peace with what was done to Dinah.
• Hamor and Shechem seemed to dream of getting even more wealthy and powerful.
• Hamor and Shechem were plotting to take all of Jacob’s wealth, but they had to consent to being circumcised.

 

Blinded by the possibility of becoming wealthier, the men of Shechem started to drop their guards regarding Jacob and his vast group. Their worries turned into dreams of marrying his daughters and acquiring his wealth. They voluntarily became circumcised, probably thinking this would make them one of Jacob’s groups.

 

Little did they know, the sons of Jacob had deceived them. The sons of Jacob were planning revenge and put on a great act. Sometimes we too can fall into blindness over becoming wealthy. Like Shechem, blindness of wealth and fame can give false security to us. BUT GOD saw the plot Hamor and Shechem were planning.

• Why do you think GOD told Moses about Hamor and Shechem’s plot?
• Have you ever wanted wealth so badly, that you lowered your standards to get it?
• Will you ask GOD to open your eyes to any blindness so HE can guide you to HIS better path?

Genesis 34: ¹³ But the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father, and spoke deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. ¹⁴ And they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us. ¹⁵ But on this condition we will consent to you: If you will become as we are, if every male of you is circumcised, ¹⁶ then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people. ¹⁷ But if you will not heed us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone.”

 

¹⁸ And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son. ¹⁹ So the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was more honorable than all the household of his father.

Hearing about the violation of Dinah, her brothers decided to do something about it. They deceived Shechem and Hamor by telling them they needed to become circumcised. This way the men of Shechem would become like the men of Israel, Jacob’s sons.

 

My Observations:

• Jacob’s sons were furious enough to plan out revenge.
• Jacob’s household followed the covenant given to Abraham, that all males born or servants who worked for the family, would be circumcised.
• Shechem was first in line, probably dreaming of having Dinah as his wife.

 

GOD told Abraham to be circumcised when he was ninety-nine. HE also said that males had to be circumcised on the eighth day, or when the child is eight days old. Jacob and his entire family followed this covenant. Jacob’s son’s knew this process would be painful for adults, so they added it to their plan.

 

Shechem, blinded by getting his way, fell into the trap created by Jacob’s sons. He was so used to getting his way that this plan looked like he had won over Jacob and his family. He thought that the men of Shechem would be excited about being able to marry the daughters of Jacob, so he got first in line. GOD saw the plan for revenge put in place.

• Why does GOD tell Moses about the plan for revenge put in place by Jacob’s sons?
• Have you ever thought about taking revenge on someone?
• Can you let go of any ill will you may have against someone and allow GOD to own vengeance?

Genesis 34: ¹¹ Then Shechem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. ¹² Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you say to me; but give me the young woman as a wife.”

Shechem decided to speak up. He thought it would be a good idea to bribe Jacob and Dinah’s brothers by offering a dowry for his violation.

 

My Observations:

• Shechem was probably used to getting what he wanted because the city was named after him.
• Shechem may have thought money would always be the answer for his problems, even the one’s he caused.
• Shechem had no regard for Dinah, Jacob or her brothers and figured a bribe would smooth over his wrong.

 

Thinking money was the solution, Shechem tried to bribe the family into getting his way. He already took what he wanted without considering the consequences. Being rich and powerful, he may have felt he was above the law. BUT GOD saw what he did.

 

In many ways, we think like Shechem. We recklessly break things in life, hoping money will fix the problem. Shechem seemed arrogant enough to approach the family with such an offer. He was raised in rebellion to GOD, much like the other Canaanites. He seemed to live life like anything goes. Little did he know, GOD saw every action.

 

Challenge

• Why does GOD tell Moses about Shechem’s bribery attempt?
• Have you ever messed up and thought money could buy you out of the problem you made?
• Instead of bribery, will you consider confessing to GOD and allow HIM to correct you so HE can place you back on HIS path?

Missed Opportunities

Genesis 34: 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field; so Jacob held his peace until they came. 6 Then Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. 7 And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done. 8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife. 9 And make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to yourselves. 10 So you shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you. Dwell and trade in it, and acquire possessions for yourselves in it.”

Jacob heard that Dinah had been violated and kept silent. Hamor heard that his son violated Jacob’s daughter and he heard the demand that his son gave him, wanting to marry Dinah after violating her. Hamor presented an option to act like a Hivite and accept their ways and receive their daughters and possessions.

 

My Observations:

• Jacob missed the opportunity to respond to the outrageous act against his daughter.
• Hamor missed the opportunity to have his son apologize and pay for his egregious action.
• Shechem missed the opportunity of having a loving relationship with Dinah by taking what he wanted.

 

Trying to downplay the violation outraged the sons of Jacob. Jacob never opened his mouth out of fear of retribution. Jacob’s fear, was noticed by his sons, so they did not do anything right away.

 

GOD had sent Jacob back to this land and now his daughter was hurt and so were his sons. What a mess! BUT GOD saw it all. This terrible act would not go unnoticed. Jacob, Hamor and Shechem represent times when we miss opportunities to stand in the gap for someone who has been wronged, or we try to smooth over a wrong, or we do the wrong. GOD sees.

• Have you ever needed someone to stand in the gap for you?
• Will you stand in the gap for someone or not try to smooth a wrong over, or confess to a wrong today?

Blind Desire

Blind Desire

Genesis 34: Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. ² And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her. ³ His soul was strongly attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman and spoke kindly to the young woman. ⁴ So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this young woman as a wife.”

Dinah was trying to accept the move, so she went to meet the Hivite women Isaac and Rebekah despised. Shechem the son of the ruler Hamor and who the city was named after, saw how beautiful Dinah was and violated her. He loved Dinah and spoke kindly to her. He demanded that Hamor get Dinah as his wife.

 

My Observations:

• Shechem saw what he wanted and took what he wanted.
• Shechem may have been in love with Dinah, but had no consideration for her feelings.
• Shechem tried to sweet talk Dinah into wanting to be with him, but that may not have been working, so he demanded his father to force her to be his wife.

 

When the desire to have something that does not belong to a person is there, bad decisions are made. Shechem wanted something and felt he could take it instead of allowing the relationship to blossom naturally. Shechem was dangerous because he could run and tell people who supported his every move, that he wanted what he wanted and that’s the way it is. The town was named “Shechem!”

 

It isn’t just about power. We want what we want and see things from a “me” perspective like Shechem. His desire would cause a lot of people to be hurt because he took what he wanted without a drop of humility. Another mess happened. GOD saw the mess.

• Why did GOD tell Moses about what Shechem did to Dinah and how he reacted?
• Have you ever wanted something so badly, that all decisions are made from getting that thing?
• Are you willing to ask GOD to change your desire into HIS desire instead of steering HIM into getting your way?

Genesis 33: ¹⁸ Then Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city. ¹⁹ And he bought the parcel of land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money. ²⁰ Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.

Jacob wanted to settle down peacefully in the land GOD told him to return to. He paid one hundred pieces of money, or silver to the children of Hamor. Hamor was the founder of Shechem.

 

My Observations:

• GOD allowed humans to own discipline when HE promised that HE would never flood the earth.
• Noah cursed Canaan, causing him to try to become powerful to avoid the curse.
• Many followers of Canaan settled in areas where Jacob bought his land.

 

After the flood, people were looking for pieces of the Garden of Eden. Gold was highly sought after and so was sliver, a lesser metal. Jacob used one hundred pieces of money to procure the land in Canaan. While it looked like Canaan avoided Noah’s curse, this purchase would become pivotal in history.

 

Canaan was told that his descendants would serve the descendants of Shem, who is in the lineage of JESUS. Canaan had no idea what Noah’s curse was about. Those who would cause havoc on humans because of their rebellion against GOD would eventually serve those who believe in CHRIST as their Savior. This prophecy does not seem to mean, CHRIST followers would be slave owners, rather, all evil will fall subject to GOD’s judgment.

• Have you ever thought one place was less cursed than another, even though GOD cursed all of creation?
• Can you remember GOD’s promise to be with you always, even to the end of the age?
