Commitment Level Set

Commitment Level Set

Genesis 22:Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”

So he said, “Here I am.”

12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

============

GOD knows all. HE is omniscient.  HE did not discover Abraham’s commitment level when Abraham raised the knife to slay his son Isaac, rather GOD may have set the commitment level within him.

My Observations:

  • Abraham was committed to GOD from his youth.
  • Abraham heard and believed many passed down stories from his father and from his ancestors, Enoch and Shem.
  • Abraham had no doubt that GOD would do as HE said HE would do, so he almost went through with the strange sacrifice.

This example of commitment was shown by Abraham for you and me. GOD did not have anything different for Abraham to do that required more training. GOD shared this commitment level with everyone who seeks to follow HIM, because, I believe, we can sometimes get so enamored with the thing GOD gives us, that we lose sight that the thing is still HIS.

HE may give us a vision, or a gift or earthly wealth and we hold onto it like it is ours. Every human is HIS, every animal and every place we build are HIS. Even our very lives are HIS. We may think we can do what we want to do, but followers of CHRIST are willing to sacrifice things that are precious to us, just because we love GOD. HE is willing to set a higher level of commitment within you and me.

Challenge

  • Why did JESUS call to Abraham from heaven?
  • Do you spend time worrying about something GOD has given you and now you may lose it?
  • Are you willing to sacrifice the thing you love so your level of commitment to GOD can increase?

Closer to the Garden

Closer to the Garden

Genesis 4: 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” 26 And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on the name of the Lord.

============

With paradise lost, grief filled the land. Adam and Eve may have stayed near the garden in hopes that maybe it would be reopened. But the cherubim that GOD placed in front of the entrance would not budge. To top it all off, their son killed their other son. Years passed and Adam and Eve had another son.

My Observations:

  • GOD had another path to HIS salvation.
  • GOD chose sinners to execute HIS plan.
  • Anyone who calls on the name of the LORD will not be put to shame.

Cain’s family left GOD and became extremely resourceful. On the other hand, Adam and Eve’s family acknowledged GOD by saying “GOD has appointed another seed.” Two paths were being defined in humanity. One that would follow human accomplishments, and one who would worship GOD, asking for help at every turn.

No curse was placed on Seth, rather the announcement of his birth was significant. It’s not that his siblings were insignificant, rather Seth’s birth would contain the family from which JESUS would choose to come in the form of a human. Although I believe it was JESUS who walked in the garden, I also believe JESUS was born through a line of humans.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD tells Moses about Adam’s statement?
  • Have you ever been curious about your family tree?
  • Have you considered how special you are to GOD?

Committed

Committed

1 Peter 4: 17 The time has come for judgment to begin, and God's own people are the first to be judged. If it starts with us, how will it end with those who do not believe the Good News from God? 18 As the scripture says,

“It is difficult for good people to be saved;
    what, then, will become of godless sinners?”

19 So then, those who suffer because it is God's will for them, should by their good actions trust themselves completely to their Creator, who always keeps his promise.

============

Noticing that it was brighter than usual at that time of day, I looked outside only to see deep snow. I had to get to school, so I got dressed warm enough to face the cold. I waited on the bus for a while, but noticed it was not anywhere in sight. I walked to the next stop which was one mile away. The next three busses were late and packed. I arrived to school only to find out all schools in the city had been closed.

  • It was very hard to get to school that day.
  • Every part of the trip provided another reason to give up.
  • I felt like saying “You got to be kidding me!” but simply turned around and reversed the tumultuous trip.

Peter discussed GOD’s judgment as it relates to suffering Christians. He seemed to attempt to provide some straight talk to believers by quoting Solomon saying it is difficult for good people to be saved. He then acknowledges the difficulty and suggests that people who suffer because they follow the will of GOD, should be committed to keep going.

My Observations:

  • When GOD makes a promise, HE never, ever stops until HE keeps it.
  • I can place my total trust in GOD because HE keeps HIS promises.
  • My attempts to “do good” should continue, no matter how difficult the trip may be.

Belief in CHRIST is easy, but living for CHRIST can be difficult. I mean, the world presents itself in ways that seem okay. It’s okay to lie a little, get drunk a little, lust a little and be selfish a little, as long as it’s done in moderation. BUT GOD’s standard is compromised by this approach.

The other extreme is to follow the rules so strictly that fruit is not bared. GOD knows I a a sinner saved by HIS grace. Only through belief in perfection, namely JESUS, can I be saved. By siding with JESUS, I pick a fight with Satan, who in turn, wants me to quit talking about JESUS. I am glad GOD has given me and you purpose, even though it can be difficult at times.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention how difficult being a Christian can be?
  • Do you think everything should go your way all the time?
  • Do you believe there is an enemy to JESUS who wants to stop you at all costs?
  • Will you “trust” yourself to GOD by being committed to doing the good deed HE wants you to do today, no matter what the obstacle looks like?

Committed

Committed

Galatians 4: In the past you did not know God, and so you were slaves of beings who are not gods. But now that you know God—or, I should say, now that God knows you—how is it that you want to turn back to those weak and pitiful ruling spirits? Why do you want to become their slaves all over again? 10 You pay special attention to certain days, months, seasons, and years. 11 I am worried about you! Can it be that all my work for you has been for nothing?

============

Walking into the tryouts we listened to the orientation. We had run track in high school so we figured that we would try the college level. “You must get up for the 5 AM run, eat breakfast with the team, go to all classes and meet back here for practice followed by study each day.” We looked at each other, laughed and walked away.

  • I was not committed to that much work.
  • I wanted to try a little bit of everything that was supposed to be “good” for me without committing.
  • I complained about anything early because I wanted to party late at night.

Paul expresses concerns over those who have turned back to the ways they had given up. Some people may have tried to follow JESUS for a little while, but saw the “ruling spirits” controlled comfort and false security, so they dropped JESUS and sought the weak and pitiful.

My Observations

  • JESUS says to me “Once I will set you free, you are free indeed.”
  • JESUS says to me “Remain in ME and I will remain in you.”
  • JESUS says to me “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.”

It is so easy to leave JESUS. I mean, the structure of the world pulls us away from thinking of HIM. Whether it is being over-scheduled or ailments or addictions or insecurities that cause us to desire to fit in, we easily trade in what is eternal for something temporary. BUT GOD knows this too.

HE knows my weak moments and forgives me anyway. HE sees through plots of the enemy that will distract me away from HIM and provides me with comfort and joy. I am glad GOD cares enough to seek me and know me.

Challenge

  • What is the writer saying with the words “or, I should say, now that GOD knows you?”
  • What do you think was going on with the people who wanted to turn back to something easier?
  • Will you commit your life to JESUS little by little so you can grow strong enough to not turn away from HIM so you can bear fruit that will last eternally?

Wear the Tee Shirt

Wear the Tee Shirt

1 Corinthians 7: 10 For married people I have a command which is not my own but the Lord's: a wife must not leave her husband; 11 but if she does, she must remain single or else be reconciled to her husband; and a husband must not divorce his wife.

12 To the others I say (I, myself, not the Lord): if a Christian man has a wife who is an unbeliever and she agrees to go on living with him, he must not divorce her. 13 And if a Christian woman is married to a man who is an unbeliever and he agrees to go on living with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made acceptable to God by being united to his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made acceptable to God by being united to her Christian husband. If this were not so, their children would be like pagan children; but as it is, they are acceptable to God. 15 However, if the one who is not a believer wishes to leave the Christian partner, let it be so. In such cases the Christian partner, whether husband or wife, is free to act. God has called you to live in peace. 16 How can you be sure, Christian wife, that you will not save your husband? Or how can you be sure, Christian husband, that you will not save your wife?

============

Traveling with a large group was probably a huge responsibility that I did not have to be aware of. “Put on your tee shirts” was the command I heard several times. The tee shirt had a bright color and a distinct design. Some people complained while others complied. Sure enough, someone got slightly lost in an airport in another country. I am glad we had tee shirts to identify with the group.

  • There have been times when I saw the benefits of being together.
  • There have been times when I could see the need to identify being together.
  • There have been times when I saw the problem of not being together actually cause others to be affected.

Paul speaks a little deeper about marriage. He tries to explain the commitment required to be a witness for JESUS. Even if a believer were married to an unbeliever, he or she would be the example that leads people to salvation in JESUS. Unity is part of that example.

  • GOD wants me to show unity so others can come to know JESUS.
  • GOD wants me to seek unity as part of my service to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to be open to being agreeable so HE can draw people to HIM.

Getting “my” way sometimes means someone else loses. I mean, it is easy to pick a fight and harder to show unity. BUT GOD wants unity wherever I am. HE is the one who provides salvation. I must align my desires with HIS so everyone will see HIM as desirable. I am glad HE cares enough for me to help me seek unity when I want “my” way.

  • Are you part of a couple or group and still trying to get your own way?
  • Do you get tired of being bound by rules and just want to do your own thing?
  • Will you seek unity and surrender your life to CHRIST so HE can guide all who you are associated with, back to HIM today?

When They Arrest You

Matthew 10: 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

============

Wait, what? Is GOD’s expectation that I be arrested for HIM? Does HE expect me to be beaten and flogged for HIM? These were not words of expectation but prophesy. GOD was telling HIS disciples that they would be falsely accused, jailed and beaten as an example to make sure no one else proclaimed JESUS as LORD.

  • There have been times when I have been falsely accused.
  • There have been situations when I have been the butt of slander.
  • There have been circumstances when I did not know what to do or say because I was profiled into a jail.

Extreme examples are what GOD needed then and now. I cannot say it will be necessary to be arrested for HIM, although sometimes HE does use this horrid situation to reach many. GOD told HIS disciples this for a reason.

  • GOD wants me to expect things to go wrong in life so I can proclaim HIS name without faltering.
  • GOD wants me to know I will be opposed in life so I can be prepared for the opposition.
  • GOD wants me to be “Wise as serpents and harmless as doves”, knowing I will face people who do not like me.

Attention by an audience is what GOD wants. HE doesn’t want extremist harmful worship, rather peaceful statements that HE is LORD. Many people are afraid to say this because of money or lust for power. GOD turns to me and asks me to follow HIM in peaceful times and difficult times. I chose to proclaim HIM as LORD!

  • Are you ostracized because of your beliefs in CHRIST?
  • Do you feel you will be held back because of your boldness?
  • Can you ask GOD to fortify your beliefs further so HE will speak through you at the right time?

Which commandment am I ignoring?

Deuteronomy 5: 32 So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you. Don’t turn away from his commands to the right or the left. 33 Live exactly as the Lord your God has commanded you to live. Then you will enjoy life in the land you will soon own. Things will go well with you there. You will live there for a long time.

============

“Where have you been” my parents inquired as I returned late from sneaking off. I thought of a lie, but it didn’t come out quite right. “I thought I told you.” They could see right through it. Another time I noticed what seemed to be more beggars than usual this day.  I planned my route carefully so I could avoid all of them. I mean they got on my nerves and besides I didn’t have enough money for them all.

  • Sometimes I think I’m doing well with GOD by keeping “most” of HIS commandments.
  • Sometimes I compare myself to “those” people who are sinning and say “at least I’m not like them.”
  • Sometimes I downplay my “little” sins because I’m not doing “big” sins.

JESUS said sin is like yeast, it only takes a little to ruin the entire loaf. HE also said “Love one another” which is sometimes very difficult to do. There are many other things HE said that I choose to ignore.

  • JESUS said “go” and make disciples, teaching them about MY love.
  • JESUS said “have faith and do not be afraid.”
  • JESUS said “listen to MY voice.”

I ignore HIS voice when I fear, worry and doubt HIM.  I forget to love others when I am wrapped up in me. I stay where I am when I am mad at GOD for not doing my bidding. GOD wants me to prepare others for HIS kingdom. HE wants me to listen to HIM and truly follow HIS ways.

  • Are you ignoring GOD?
  • Do you have worry, doubt, or blame in your heart?
  • Can you let go of some of these feelings and follow GOD’s commands to “love one another?”
  • Won’t you stop looking at a few scripture and ask GOD for help in following HIS ways?

They just don’t understand

Acts 25: 18 When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected. 19 Instead, they had some points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a dead man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive. 20 I was at a loss how to investigate such matters; so I asked if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.

============

“Shocked” was the look many people gave me when I told them I was going on my first missions trip. “Why now?”, “why you?”, “don’t we have enough problems here?” were only a few of the questions I got as I discussed my plans. Funny, these questions were from people who claimed to follow CHRIST.

  • It seems like there are times GOD has me do some unusual things that benefit the kingdom.
  • It seems like there are times GOD directs me to do things people don’t understand that benefits the kingdom.
  • It seems like there are times GOD leads me to places I would never go but it benefits the kingdom.

GOD desires that no one will perish and HE wants anyone who is willing to go out and spread HIS message of love, grace and mercy. HE wants me to be open to going to my neighbors, my city, other states and even other countries if HE tells me to.  This openness is the beginning of compassion for “all” humans not just the ones I would choose.

Many people will question the timing, method or reason for me serving GOD.  It seems like each time I have gone on a trip, money was an issue or some event was in conflict or some other reason was a better option. Even writing down a daily devotional is questioned as people ask “why do you do that?” or “why make yourself look bad?” There is a harsh reality to relaying HIS message that must be coupled with “love.”

  • GOD’s message will remain strange to those who are not seeking HIM but I must try anyway.
  • GOD’s method will be doubted by those whose faith is small but I must have faith anyway.
  • GOD’s timing will seem inconvenient to people but I must accept HIS timing and HIS plan.

Paul tried to explain JESUS’ resurrection to people who could care less. They treated him like some religious fanatic and he was ostracized. GOD desires HIS simple message of love to be given even though people may not receive it.

  • Are you trying to live for GOD and people do not understand what you are doing?
  • Are people confused by your decision to serve GOD more and more?
  • Can you stay the course while delivering HIS message with love, compassion and grace?

How committed am I?

Acts 14:  19 Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

 21 They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.

============

Being part of “the club” was an aspiration of mine. After a number of golf lessons I was actually accepted but only on the perimeter of “the club.” I overheard a conversation talking about the body parts of specific coworkers. “Should I join in and compromise the values I stood for?” “Sure” I quickly thought to myself. I was finally in “the club” but at what cost?

  • One reason living for GOD is so tough is because I want my sinful way.
  • Another reason living for GOD is so difficult is because I want the things GOD doesn’t want me to have.
  • Yet another reason living for GOD is so hard is because I don’t want to be uncomfortable or mistreated because I am associated with HIM.

“The Club” represented wealth, great food, and incredible vacations at exotic locations. What it did not have in it was faith, purity, and love. These strange things meant I had to actually give up being in “the club” in order to live for GOD.

I actually tried using faith, purity and love in “the club” and noticed I was placed back on the perimeter and finally I was out of “the club.” The more committed to GOD I became the more “the club” opposed me. I wasn’t even trying to convert them or even win them over nor did I judge their actions. After a while “the club” viewed my kindness as weakness and they hurled stones at me.

Thank GOD for rescuing me out of the club because now I can speak about HIM without worrying about what others think of me.

  • Are you trying to be in “the club?”
  • Are you following behind others who are not committed to CHRIST?
  • Are you actively seeking GOD and things are getting harder for you?
  • Won’t you “hang in there” even if life gets more difficult?
