Steps to Growth

Steps to Growth

1 Peter 2:  Rid yourselves, then, of all evil; no more lying or hypocrisy or jealousy or insulting language. Be like newborn babies, always thirsty for the pure spiritual milk, so that by drinking it you may grow up and be saved. As the scripture says, “You have found out for yourselves how kind the Lord is.”

============

Tired of my scrawny stature, I joined a gym. I didn’t know how to lift weights, but it couldn’t be that hard, right? I watched the brawny people pick up heavy objects and put them back down. I tried it myself and couldn’t. Some people approached me and showed me what I was doing wrong. They had me start over using the correct form and lighter weights.

  • I was too embarrassed to ask for help, so I watched and tried to do things on my own.
  • I knew I needed to do something different, but I did not know what to change.
  • I needed to start off with what I could handle, then progress to something heavier.

Pater identified steps to spiritual growth. First he gave a list of symptoms that would keep a person from growing spiritually. He listed a small list of blockers that included, lying, hypocrisy, jealousy and insulting language. These were probably problems with those who wore masks and pretended to be holy. He then gave the true remedy, namely becoming thirsty for spiritual milk.

My Observations:

  • Embarrassment leads me to seek the wisdom of the world, BUT GOD wants me to seek HIS wisdom as the beginning of knowledge.
  • Insecurity leads me to want to cover up my flaws, BUT GOD wants me to be secure in my faith with HIM so I can address issues versus covering them up.
  • Starting over makes me think I will never arrive, BUT GOD wants me to tear down patterns of thinking that may have existed for decades.

Seeking GOD as a little baby means I can’t think about what I ingest, I should just eat it up. Unfortunately, there have been those who have presented the Gospel in a manipulative way, causing me to have pause. BUT GOD has a remedy.

HE wants me to listen to other people and read the Bible for myself. HE wants me to understand the scriptures for myself and continue to seek HIS face with an insatiable thirst. Life can bring hard lessons. That is why GOD wants me to know HE is there with me at all times. I am grateful GOD has given the scriptures for all to be comforted.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer start the list with what to get rid of?
  • Have you ever tried to hide your flaws behind a goody, goody mask?
  • Will you start over with a better foundation and seek GOD as a little child versus seeing HIM through the world’s hurts today?

It’s All About Love

It’s All About Love

1 Peter 1: 22 Now that by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves and have come to have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with all your heart. 23 For through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal. 24 As the scripture says,

“All human beings are like grass,
    and all their glory is like wild flowers.
The grass withers, and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

This word is the Good News that was proclaimed to you.

============

Sitting around the thugs who threatened to beat me up unless I allowed them to copy off my paper made me want to leave them. So I did. Seeing childish people selfishly try to get their own way made me want to leave them. So I did. Working on a job with extremely poor leadership made me want to leave the company. So I did.

  • I have left people and said “good riddance.”
  • I have felt relieve when I got away from certain people.
  • I realized later, that I had absolutely no compassion for certain people.

Peter gives the great commandment that JESUS gave before HE ascended to heaven. “Love one another.” Peter focused on the sincerity of love. He probably saw that people would love those they could get things from, but would not love people who were harder to love. He then says that GOD’s love is different, because it is not temporary.

My Observations:

  • GOD’s love for me and you is so strange because HE cares for me even when I sin.
  • GOD forgives me enough to correct me and guide me to HIS type of love.
  • Human love is temporary, manipulative and conditional whether we think so or not, BUT GOD’s love is unconditional, above sin and permanent.

Love one another is as simple as it gets, but seems to be nearly impossible. I mean, in the days or relative truth, love can be something nearly impossible to achieve because each person can say “You are not loving ‘me’ the right way.”  BUT GOD sees through this childish ploy.

GOD sees the heart and knows when I am being selfish. HE told me I have to fight the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, to realize I can be blinded by these things. HE then opens my eyes to the example of JESUS who loved people so much that HE died for them. I am so glad JESUS cares for me and wants me to use HIS examples of love.

Challenge

  • What type of love is the writer talking about?
  • Do you have an image of what love looks like to you and are upset that he or she is not providing “love” the way you think you should have it?
  • Will you ask GOD to guide you to what HIS love looks like so HE can fill your heart with HIS type of love for other people today?

Valuable Time

Valuable Time

1 Peter 1: 17 You call him Father, when you pray to God, who judges all people by the same standard, according to what each one has done; so then, spend the rest of your lives here on earth in reverence for him. 18 For you know what was paid to set you free from the worthless manner of life handed down by your ancestors. It was not something that can be destroyed, such as silver or gold; 19 it was the costly sacrifice of Christ, who was like a lamb without defect or flaw. 20 He had been chosen by God before the creation of the world and was revealed in these last days for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from death and gave him glory; and so your faith and hope are fixed on God.

============

Having a lot to do, I began my work. “Come to this event” was a challenge posed to me. I asked who would be there. But he insisted that I attend. I spent time driving to the event only to find out it was not what presented to me.

  • I felt that I had been tricked.
  • I felt upset that I could have been doing something more valuable with my time.
  • I felt I wasted my time going to an event that had nothing to do with what I was working on.

Peter tried to present CHRIST to everyone in terms of “value.” He provides sage advice to consider how precious JESUS is to the living versus only thinking of HIM as a being who prevents us from Hell. He suggests that everyone spend the rest of life in reverence of GOD.

My Observations:

  • Life can bring on challenges that require time, BUT GOD deserves much more of my time.
  • Trying to sustain a place to live, clothes on my back and food to eat can take time, BUT GOD should be thought of before I think of myself.
  • Pleasure can take time, BUT GOD is the one I should seek before I seek pleasure.

Valuing GOD can be difficult in a cynical world. I mean, when other people place value on the acquisition of things or the knowledge of humans, GOD can look like a magical genie who is made up to grant human wishes. This is a false presentation of the MOST HIGH.

GOD is the all powerful, all knowing being who is everywhere. HE is the creator who has no beginning and no end. HIS SON is the only way we can even believe in GOD. I gladly give my time in reverence of HIM.

Challenge

  • What value is the writer trying to portray?
  • What are your pursuits?
  • Are they more valuable to you than your relationship with JESUS?
  • Will you seek GOD’s kingdom through belief in JESUS, who died for your sins and has been raised from the dead to guide you to a better life today?

Ready for Action

Ready for Action

1 Peter 1: 13 So then, have your minds ready for action. Keep alert and set your hope completely on the blessing which will be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 Be obedient to God, and do not allow your lives to be shaped by those desires you had when you were still ignorant. 15 Instead, be holy in all that you do, just as God who called you is holy. 16 The scripture says, “Be holy because I am holy.”

============

Feeling that I needed some “relief” from the pressures of work, I decided to go to the party. After that decision, I decided to do other things that wound up being more distractions from life. When I woke up on Monday, I realized, I had not studied at all for the quiz.

  • I was not ready.
  • I blamed the quiz on not being ready.
  • I felt worse because I was not ready and now I had more pressure that required “relief.”

Peter tried to get everyone off a vicious cycle of not being ready. He provides a path of “readiness” that includes hope, blessing, obedience and holiness. These actions will provide rewards from CHRIST.

My Observations:

  • Sin distracts me away from the peace of GOD, and I start to lose hope
  • Disobedience causes me to challenge GOD which in turn blinds me from HIS blessings.
  • Various desires stay top of mind, causing me to remain ignorant of who GOD really is.

Spiritual blindness and deafness are the result of not listening to GOD. I mean, when I go too long doing things “my” way, I stop listening to GOD, who has a better way. HE allows me to commit as many sins as I would like. HE warns me of the consequences and is just to bring judgment on me if I disobey. BUT GOD has grace that I do not understand.

HE gives me a better path that I can follow. JESUS lived a perfect life. HE is my example. HE lived in “holiness” and suggests that I do the same. The enemy wants me to act contrary to JESUS. I am glad HE gave me many examples of how to live an abundant life.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention the mind?
  • Have you ever thought of a plan to give yourself pleasure or “relief” from the pressures of this world?
  • Have you considered that not every plan you think of is good for you?
  • Will you consider placing all of you plans, thoughts and desires before the LORD and allow HIM to guide you to a better path today?

For Your Benefit

For Your Benefit

1 Peter 1: 10 It was concerning this salvation that the prophets made careful search and investigation, and they prophesied about this gift which God would give you. 11 They tried to find out when the time would be and how it would come. This was the time to which Christ's Spirit in them was pointing, in predicting the sufferings that Christ would have to endure and the glory that would follow. 12 God revealed to these prophets that their work was not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News by the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. These are things which even the angels would like to understand.

============

Collecting information about me and my family, the administrative assistant smiled and went away. Not thinking anything of it, I got back to work. Later I found out that she used the information to provide a special gift for my family.

  • I was excited!
  • I felt great that this was done for us.
  • I never thought I could be thought of in a special way.

Peter spoke about something very special that was given to mankind through the prophets. The announcement that JESUS would come to save humanity was given to prophets. Some may have felt special and others may not. But it wasn’t for their benefit that the message was given, rather it was for us.

My Observations:

  • GOD revealed the solution to all of humanity’s problems when HE gave the prophets the prediction of JESUS.
  • JESUS fulfilled every prophetic message through the suffering HE endured.
  • Even the angels are confounded over the action of JESUS.

Love of humans that is so strong that it made JESUS die for us is confusing. I mean, there is not a single human that would give up everything, be blamed for all problems and become the one and only sacrifice to save the world. BUT JESUS did.

HE did take on your sin and mine. HE knew HE was the only one who could walk sinless as a human, but remain powerful as GOD. Confusing? Yes it is, but it is this powerful love that you and I benefit from. I am grateful that I am loved deeply by GOD.

Challenge

  • What revelation did the writer speak of?
  • Have you ever wondered why JESUS would do what HE did for you?
  • Will you take some time to praise GOD for what HE has done and is doing in your life today?

Great and Glorious Joy

Great and Glorious Joy

1 Peter 1: Be glad about this, even though it may now be necessary for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trials you suffer. Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine. Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith, which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honor on the Day when Jesus Christ is revealed. You love him, although you have not seen him, and you believe in him, although you do not now see him. So you rejoice with a great and glorious joy which words cannot express, because you are receiving the salvation of your souls, which is the purpose of your faith in him.

============

“Why me?” was my cry. It seemed like “everything” was going wrong in my life at the time. I began to explain to GOD what I was doing for HIM as I tried to get my life back on track with HIM. My explanations were met with more pain.

  • I was tired of facing more problems.
  • I was tired of being in pain.
  • I was tired of the situation I was in at the time.

Peter gave some hard to hear advice. He told those who were chosen by GOD to be glad, even though they were facing some difficult times. He then explained the purpose of the difficulty. Each person’s faith would be tested with the fires of trials to make it genuine.

My Observations:

  • Life is far more than what I can see when I am in the middle of a trial.
  • Looking back on the trials in my life, I understand more than I would, had I not gone through the trial.
  • GOD gives me the ability to praise HIM now instead of waiting on the day when JESUS returns.

Let’s be honest, trials are not fun. I mean, when I am in a trial, I want it to be over as quickly as possible. BUT GOD allows me to stay in the trial long enough to strengthen my faith in HIM. I cry out early in the trial, but later I see that HE is in the fire with me. HE protects me and guides me.

I can rejoice during the trial versus waiting for it to be over. This is a sign of “joy” over “happiness.” I can see GOD at work even though the results have not come to fruition. I praise GOD for what HE has done, is doing and will do!

Challenge

  • What purpose is the writer talking about?
  • Have you ever gone through something difficult and came out stronger?
  • Will you praise GOD with “joy”, knowing JESUS has won the victory over all your trials and your salvation is more precious to HIM than you could ever imagine?

Living Hope

Living Hope

1 Peter 1: Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he gave us new life by raising Jesus Christ from death. This fills us with a living hope, and so we look forward to possessing the rich blessings that God keeps for his people. He keeps them for you in heaven, where they cannot decay or spoil or fade away. They are for you, who through faith are kept safe by God's power for the salvation which is ready to be revealed at the end of time.

============

Feeling anxious about my pending job evaluation, I prepared my statement of the year’s accomplishments. When I sat in front of my boss, I could see that the evaluation was already written, signed and provided to me. It did not match what I thought.

  • I put a lot of hard work into the job, only to get an average evaluation.
  • I thought I did the right things to get recognized, but was told that other people performed better.
  • I lost hope in the job, because I could not have worked any harder than 60 to 80 hours per week.

Peter discussed hope that cannot be stolen and will never decay. This hope is in GOD’s rewards in heaven for each of those HE calls HIS own.

My Observations:

  • GOD’s rewards for me are based on HIS love HE has for me.
  • GOD sees what I  do for HIM and loves it so much that HE stores up rewards in heaven.
  • GOD’s rewards are not based on human performance, rather HIS overflowing love for me.

Knowing that being born into sin seemed unfair to me. I mean, because I was born I deserve to go to Hell?! Yes. But the other side to the unfairness is quite amazing. Just by belief in JESUS not only saves me from eternal separation from GOD, but gives me unimaginable rewards that can never fade.

GOD provides me with living hope to look beyond this life. This hope propels me into action for HIM. I am glad GOD cares enough for me to save me and reward me greatly.

Challenge

  • What hope is the writer talking about?
  • Have you ever placed your hope in something or someone, only to be met with disappointment?
  • Will you seek living hope that actively seeks what GOD wants so you can receive rewards in heaven beyond your imagination?

Fully Receiving Hope

Fully Receiving Hope

1 Peter 1: From Peter, apostle of Jesus Christ—

To God's chosen people who live as refugees scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. You were chosen according to the purpose of God the Father and were made a holy people by his Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be purified by his blood.

May grace and peace be yours in full measure.

============

Shopping for groceries in the new town was something I had to get used to. I had to find where this store kept everything. I navigated the aisles and finished up with a lot of groceries, since I was just moving into my apartment. “Would you like help to your car?” was a question I had never heard before. “Sure!” I replied. The bagger loaded my trunk and thanked me for shopping there.

  • I felt that I received great service.
  • I could not believe how friendly people could be.
  • I was thankful I received help when I needed it.

Peter writes to GOD’s chosen people and wishes them grace and peace in full measure. He did not wish for a little grace and peace, but full and perfect grace and peace. This meant GOD would intervene during the troubles each of them were facing.

My Observations:

  • Peace can only come from GOD.
  • Grace can only come from GOD.
  • Grace and peace can happen even when times are difficult.

Grace and peace can be elusive. I mean, circumstances continue to pop up that can rob me of my peace. Then I may fall, causing me to feel distant from GOD. BUT GOD sees what I am going through and provides grace and peace.

HE not only provides grace but says “MY grace is sufficient.” HIS grace is full, everlasting and perfect. There is no flaw in HIS grace. HE then gives me peace in the middle of the storm. This is perfect peace because it cannot be stolen. I am assured by GOD and I am glad for it.

Challenge

  • What grace and peace do you think the writer was trying to convey?
  • Have you ever received a little grace and peace?
  • How did it feel?
  • Can you ask GOD for HIS grace and peace today?

Prayer

Dear LORD please provide this reader with YOUR grace and peace in full measure today? amen

Bringing Back

Bringing Back

James 5: 19 My friends, if any of you wander away from the truth and another one brings you back again, 20 remember this: whoever turns a sinner back from the wrong way will save that sinner's soul from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

============

Furious at hypocrite “Christians”, I decided to stop going to church. I went to parties and “enjoyed” my days as much as I could. A few people tried to reach me with the valuable words of JESUS, but I could not listen until things really started going wrong for me.

  • I was hurt and angry.
  • I was curious about what the world had to offer and found out it had nothing.
  • I had no place to go so I turned back to GOD.

James provides some wise advice regarding those who try to walk away from GOD to fall into sin. He implies that everyone who sees a person walk away should keep trying to bring the person pack into the truth. He then explains the reward of forgiveness.

My Observations:

  • GOD knows the trouble I can get into and is always willing to take me back
  • GOD knows I may go through periods when I do not feel like following HIM, BUT HE is so loving that HE welcomes me back.
  • GOD knows I may choose the wrong way BUT HE wants me to choose HIS way which is the only way to life.

Choosing a destructive path seems foolish yet alluring. I mean, there may be times when I think GOD’s ways are not as important as the ways of the world. But when I fall deeper into trouble, I have nowhere to turn. I find myself without GOD and without help from the world. BUT GOD is gracious.

HE send people to me and sends HIS love through many other people. HE blesses me with HIS grace and wipes away my tears, heals my pain and guides me to the right path. I am glad GOD welcomes me back when I wander from HIM.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer warn people about wandering?
  • Have you ever gotten tired of hearing about GOD, or tired about someone else’s approach to GOD that you felt you should leave HIM and try some things that you know in your heart may be harmful?
  • Will you allow GOD to speak to you through other people if you have turned away from GOD?
  • Will you continue to pursue those who have walked away so he or she may turn back to GOD and be forgiven of many sins?

Available Power

Available Power

James 5: 16 So then, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you will be healed. The prayer of a good person has a powerful effect. 17 Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years. 18 Once again he prayed, and the sky poured out its rain and the earth produced its crops.

============

Thinking I was by myself, I came up with plans to address my problems. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my chest. I couldn’t even breathe deeply. I called a coworker over to my apartment. He asked questions that showed he was nervous about the situation too. I began to pray because I did not know what to do. Suddenly I felt better. I went to the doctor and they could not find out what was wrong.

  • I was scared.
  • I was in pain.
  • I did not know how to “fix” this.

James says some difficult words to hear. “Confess your sins to one another.” He implies that some, not all, ailments could be manifested by sin. He provides a remedy, namely prayer.

My Observations:

  • Confession of my sins relieves me of guilt that could cause me to lose sleep.
  • Turning away from my sins enables me to rest better because my conscience is clear.
  • Asking GOD to intervene when someone tells me about his or her sins, is more powerful than gossip.

Praying seems weak but is extremely powerful. I mean, when I humble myself before GOD, HE is willing to listen. HE knows when I am too proud or too hateful to place things before HIM correctly. HE also knows when I am forcing HIS hand to get “my” way. BUT GOD is merciful.

HE brings to mind the things I need to confess and gives me an opportunity to say, “I need help with this.” HE is willing to help me when I ask for help. HE is delighted when I tell others I need help in an area of my life. HE then surrounds me with the right people to guide me back to HIM. I am glad HE is willing to heal me and put me back on the right path.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer mention confession when he later talks about being healed?
  • Do you believe in the power of prayer?
  • Why don’t you get your way all the time?
  • Wil you tap into the power of prayer by confessing and talking to GOD on someone else’s behalf today?

First Action

First Action

James 5: 13 Are any among you in trouble? They should pray. Are any among you happy? They should sing praises. 14 Are any among you sick? They should send for the church elders, who will pray for them and rub olive oil on them in the name of the Lord. 15 This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; the Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have committed will be forgiven.

============

Nervous about the bad news, I laid awake at night. I could not sleep for a week. We got together and discussed the impending doom. More conversations about what “could” happen were had than that of what good was going on in our lives.

  • My first “reaction” was to start planning.
  • My first “impulse” was to try to make sense out of a situation that was out of my hands.
  • My first “assumption” was that everything bad was “definitely” going to happen.

James gives the answer to all problems, namely “pray.” He gives three ways to do this. He says people who are in trouble should talk to GOD directly about the trouble. He also says, if things are going well, people should “praise” GOD. He then says the sick may need more people to help so ask for other to “petition” to GOD in prayer.

Prayer seems like a last resort kind of thing. I mean, usually I try to “fix” the problem myself and when things get even worse, I panic and possible blame. BUT GOD has a different way.

HE wants me to come to HIM first with any problem, trouble or sickness. Asking GOD for HIS advice, direction and counsel, helps me think clearly and takes the ownership off of me and places it on HIM. This requires a vast amount of faith. Those who like to “control” situations will not like the answer of prayer. BUT GOD lives when I can praise HIM. I am glad GOD is willing to listen to me.,

Challenge

  • What ways does the writer give in developing solutions?
  • Have you ever developed a solution and things did not come out as expected?
  • How did you react?
  • Will you take your first action to GOD so HE can heal, fix and provide for you today?

Filled Words

Filled Words

James 5: 12 Above all, my friends, do not use an oath when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Say only “Yes” when you mean yes, and “No” when you mean no, and then you will not come under God's judgment.

============

“I’ll call you” were my empty words I used when I was moving too fast. I had all the intention of following up, but simply forgot. The same happened when I said I would pray for a person, or pass on the message of hello.

  • I found that I used empty words more than I thought.
  • I had the best intentions, but I did not take into account becoming overwhelmed.
  • I was not malicious in using empty words, but they were still empty, nonetheless.

James attempts to address one aspect of character, namely avoiding making promises that may or may not be kept. He implies that promises go before GOD and each one will be held accountable. He then suggests, to provide an answer without making empty promises.

My Observations:

  • GOD wants me to make promises to HIM, but only the ones I will keep.
  • Promises should be made sparingly, otherwise I will be held accountable for something I may or may not do.
  • Saying “I may not be able to do this” is better than trying to make someone feel good by empty words.

Using empty promises to make a person feel good is a problem. I mean, saying “I will pray” or “I will call” as examples, only raises the recipients hopes up. But when I don’t follow through, the problem then falls on me for not having done so. GOD wants me to change my empty words.

HE wants me to say “Yes” or “No” and let the person who asked for something, know that I will or will not fulfill the request. This part of character is called reliability. I am glad GOD is always reliable in what HE says and does.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about making an oath?
  • Have you ever made a small promise to do something, but simply forgot to do it?
  • Have you ever wanted other people to do something and he or she forgot?
  • Will you fill your words up with a solid “yes” or “no” so people can see your reliability for the purpose of understanding how serious GOD takes promises today?

Patient Endurance

Patient Endurance

James 5: Do not complain against one another, my friends, so that God will not judge you. The Judge is near, ready to appear. 10 My friends, remember the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Take them as examples of patient endurance under suffering. 11 We call them happy because they endured. You have heard of Job's patience, and you know how the Lord provided for him in the end. For the Lord is full of mercy and compassion.

============

Going through difficult times, I just wanted some relief. I went out with people and it felt good for a couple of hours, but then I had to face my problems. After a while, going out was no longer effective.

  • I thought I could “fun” my way out of my problems.
  • I thought I could “enjoy” my way out of my circumstances.
  • I thought I could “entertain” my way out of my situation.

James starts off by providing a solution before giving the problem. He warns everyone about complaining against one another. This was a great solution, but what was the problem? Perhaps the people were going through difficulties and the advice other people were giving was to “complain.” Job’s friends gave this same kind of advice, but Job did not complain, rather he endured with patience.

My Observations:

  • I do not like suffering, BUT GOD helps me endure so HE can grow my faith.
  • I do not like life’s pain, BUT GOD has a plan that includes whatever I will go through.
  • I do not like to be hurt, BUT GOD comforts me when life brings on tremendous amounts of it.

Hurt, pain and suffering are things I want to avoid. I mean who wants to suffer? No one! BUT GOD knows the suffering I must endure because HE gave mankind free will. This gift may cause me to make decisions that can harm me or others. It also allows others to do the same. What can help this difficult set up? GOD.

HE provides the COMFORTER to go through the situations with us. HE feels the pain and knows what anguish I may face. HE then does something better. HE increases my faith in GOD as HE takes me through each circumstance, not around them. I am glad GOD grows me to patiently endure.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer start of by warning people about complaining about one another?
  • Have you ever suffered and got tired?
  • Will you ask GOD to help you through this period of suffering, knowing HIS plan for you is not complete, rather HE has some wonderful things in store for you?

High Hopes

High Hopes

James 5: Be patient, then, my friends, until the Lord comes. See how patient farmers are as they wait for their land to produce precious crops. They wait patiently for the autumn and spring rains. You also must be patient. Keep your hopes high, for the day of the Lord's coming is near.

============

Seeing the results of growing vegetables, I planted more the next year. I waited in anticipation, but noticed “everything” was not growing fast enough. I added water to the ungrown seeds. Nothing. Later, I found out I was adding too much water.

  • I was impatient.
  • My efforts to speed things up ended up killing everything.
  • My high hopes were broken apart because of my impatience.

James gives an analogy, comparing hope to farming. He admires how patient farmers are as they tend to their crops, knowing they can’t make things happen in their time, rather they had to wait until the right time.

My Observations:

  • GOD has extreme patience with me.
  • GOD wants me to learn to have patience with HIS plans HE has for me.
  • GOD has the power to handle all my circumstances as HE advances HIS plan for me.

“Be Patient” are words that are sometimes difficult to hear. I mean, what about “this” trouble or “that” problem? GOD sees everything that can make me scared, worried or doubtful and provides comfort.

HE knows all the things that can run through my mind and HE steps in to intervene. HE knows the plans HE has for me. Plans to prosper and not to harm me. I am so glad GOD is in control of my plans. This keeps my hopes high.

Challenge

  • What is the result of patience mentioned by the writer?
  • Has GOD ever promised something to you and you lost patience waiting?
  • Will you not get weary and remain hopeful because GOD is in control of all your circumstances today?
