Heated Plans

Heated Plans

Genesis 37: 18 Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him. 19 Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming! 20 Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!”

21 But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.

============

Enraged at hearing about Joseph’s dreams, the sons of Israel left Shechem and went to Dothan. There, they could see Joseph approaching without him seeing them. The heat of their conversation led to them wanting to kill Joseph. They developed a plan to kill him and were willing to execute the plan. But Reuben suggested another way.

My Observations:

  • Joseph’s brothers were so angry, that they thought out how to harm him and began executing the plan by going to Dothan.
  • Joseph’s brothers waited for him, possibly knowing Israel would send him out to spy on them.
  • Joseph’s brothers were so jealous that they would do and say anything to get rid of him.

Talking to one another made things worse. Complaint after complaint about them more and more angry until it reached the point where they were willing to commit murder. GOD spared us the details of who the main conspirators were.

Fortunately for Joseph, Reuben stepped in with another plan. He probably knew he could not calm his brothers down, so he gave them an alternative. Dothan was the wilderness and no one would find Joseph if he was thrown in a pit. Reuben would then circle back around ahd get Joseph out of the pit and bring him back to Israel.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about the plans of the sons of Israel?
  • Have you ever been so angry that you planned out harm to someone, even if only using harmful words?
  • Can you think of an alternative to rage by putting your mind on good, pure, and lovely things the LORD has done for you?

Insecure Plan

Insecure Plan

Genesis 16: Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai. Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan. So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.

============

Abram seemed to have a close relationship with Sarai, his wife. He told her everything the LORD said to him. She may have seen his face light up as he talked about having so many descendants, humans could not count them. But they tried and tried and could not have children. Sarai may have felt terrible, so she thought up a plan.

My Observations:

  • Sarai may have acquired Hagar after the LORD caused a drought in the original land, sending them to Egypt.
  • Sarai’s Chaldean beliefs may have differed from Abram.
  • Sarai came up with a plan based on her insecurities.

Hearing the stories about Shem, Abram’s ancestor, may have seemed like a fairytale to Sarai. Possibly raised as a Chaldean, people were also property in Sarai’s eyes. She could simply take the child because Hagar was considered her property. When her plan worked and the child was born, it made her feel worse, knowing she was barren versus Abram being infertile.

Sarai’s insecure plan would prove to be very difficult. Later we will see just how problematic this decision was. Sarai’s plan is not much different than yours or mine when we take matters in our own hands. She may have even sprinkled GOD in her plan, thinking it was HIS fault for causing the drought that sent them to Egypt, almost causing her to be taken by the Egyptians. The plan may have been caused by pain. BUT GOD knew about the plan.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD mention Sarai and Hagar to Moses?
  • Have you ever heard a promise from GOD and tried to steer the outcome with your own plan?
  • Is your relationship with GOD secure enough to allow HIM to do things HIS way and in HIS time?

How To

How To

Colossians 2: See to it, then, that no one enslaves you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from the teachings handed down by human beings and from the ruling spirits of the universe, and not from Christ. For the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity, 10 and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.

============

“Go in and ask for advice” were the words I dreaded. I did not like this particular boss, but somehow he had made it to the level he was. “Read this book” was his advice. I was the leadership book of the day that was useful, but not life changing.

  • I got nothing from that experience.
  • I was open to change my life based on a random philosophy.
  • I was focused on “me”, so anything less than getting help for “me” was disappointing.

Paul gives a stern warning to avoid the “worthless deceit of human wisdom.” This sounds harsh, especially to those who study and receive degrees or fancy letters behind their name. Paul was not downplaying accomplishments, rather the focus of the philosophy. If a human is exalted and JESUS is not, then the philosophy is worthless.

My Observations

  • There have been many times when I wanted to be exalted so I read books, watched videos and attended seminars on “how to” get better, BUT GOD is my only path to true health.
  • I have sought advice on “how to” live better, BUT GOD wants my dependence to be on HIM.
  • I have been in dire straits and would do almost anything to get out of my circumstance, BUT GOD shows me that HE is supreme and is in control of all.

“How To” videos are mesmerizing these days. I mean, anyone with a smart phone can record “how to” do something. Unfortunately, some of these recordings contain content that have an inferior philosophy to that of believing in JESUS.

Each human wants to be GOD and wants to be in control of his or her own life. GOD wants us to surrender our desires to HIM and allow HIS SON to be exalted amongst all humans. JESUS, lived, died and was raised from the dead. I gladly give all authority in my life to HIM and know HE is in control of all my circumstances.

Challenge

  • What do you get from the writer’s warning?
  • Have you ever been so desperate that you would listen to an inferior philosophy from another human?
  • Will you allow GOD to pick you back up so you can clearly hear HIM and follow the HOLY SPIRIT which draws all humans to the FATHER through CHRIST today?

Promises Kept

Promises Kept

2 Corinthians 1: 15 I was so sure of all this that I made plans at first to visit you, in order that you might be blessed twice. 16 For I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and again on my way back, in order to get help from you for my trip to Judea. 17 In planning this, did I appear fickle? When I make my plans, do I make them from selfish motives, ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time? 18 As surely as God speaks the truth, my promise to you was not a “Yes” and a “No.” 19 For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was preached among you by Silas, Timothy, and myself, is not one who is “Yes” and “No.” On the contrary, he is God's “Yes”; 20 for it is he who is the “Yes” to all of God's promises. This is why through Jesus Christ our “Amen” is said to the glory of God.

============

“I will call you” and “I will pray for you” and “I will be there on time” are words I threw around with well-meaning intent. But sometimes, life got in the way of me keeping those words. My reliability was not quite where it needed to be.

  • I was saying “Yes” and “No” at the same time.
  • I was not dependable with something valuable and important.
  • I was fickle.

Paul was so sure that the people he wrote to had an amazing relationship with JESUS, that he planned to visit them twice. Once on his way to Macedonia and again on the way back. He then explains the importance of keeping promises. He explains that JESUS “is” the one and only “Yes” to all of GOD’s promises.

My Observations

  • GOD has already kept HIS promises HE made for me.
  • GOD gave me eternal life and has solidified it with a promise through JESUS CHRIST.
  • GOD said “Yes” to me by giving me HIS SON as a special gift, just for me.

Making plans is only as good as the ability to keep the plan. I mean, I can say “I plan to” all day long, BUY GOD is the only one who can say “I will” and mean it. Nothing can stop GOD’s plan and the promises HE made to all humans has already been kept.

HE promised to save humanity and HE already did this. There is nothing left for HIM to do. We can focus our attention on praising HIM, even when we cannot keep our small promises. I am grateful GOD is faithful and has kept ALL of HIS promises for me.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer appear sensitive about keeping promises?
  • How do you feel when someone does not keep their promise to you?
  • Can you praise GOD for always keeping HIS promises and for HIS relationship with you that is loving and pursuing towards you today?

Secret Plans

Secret Plans

Romans 2: 12 The Gentiles do not have the Law of Moses; they sin and are lost apart from the Law. The Jews have the Law; they sin and are judged by the Law. 13 For it is not by hearing the Law that people are put right with God, but by doing what the Law commands. 14 The Gentiles do not have the Law; but whenever they do by instinct what the Law commands, they are their own law, even though they do not have the Law. 15 Their conduct shows that what the Law commands is written in their hearts. Their consciences also show that this is true, since their thoughts sometimes accuse them and sometimes defend them. 16 And so, according to the Good News I preach, this is how it will be on that Day when God through Jesus Christ will judge the secret thoughts of all.

============

Looking out the window, I wished I could be outside playing. Overhearing how other people slipped away from school at lunch gave me an idea. I would try this myself. I planned my escape carefully and did accomplish my goal. Of course I did this on the very day my parents chose to be at home. Now I had to lie and pretend I was sick. I never made it outside.

  • I have had many wrong thoughts that I wanted to do.
  • I have had many wrong thoughts that I wanted to act on.
  • I have had many wrong thoughts that I turned into plans and the plans turned into actions.

Paul writes about the Gentile’s and the Jew’s connection to the Law of Moses. He states, the Jews have the Law and are judged by it but the Gentiles do not have the Law but still act according to the Law because it is written in their hearts. He then sums up his statement by saying JESUS will judge the secret thoughts of all.

  • GOD wants me to put HIS ways in my heart.
  • GOD wants me to ask HIM to clean my heart because I do not know how evil I can be.
  • GOD wants me to take every thought that pops in my mind and place them through HIS ways to see if I should act on it.

Temptation is not fair. I mean, humans are like sheep who sees another patch of yummy grass when it comes to sin. BUT GOD, being the shepherd, guides me away from the dangers of sin by giving me a way to avoid it.

GOD will judge my deepest secret plans that no one knows about. HE will show everyone what I have hidden in my heart. Any hatred, lust, greed, lie, cheat, anger, doubt, or fear, will be brought to the surface and put on display. I believe, the pain will be lessened by exposing my sin before HE does. I am glad GOD forgives me for the sin I hide in my heart.

  • What are you hiding?
  • Do you think you are getting away with the secret sin you have?
  • Will you grow up and stop justifying your secret plans that lead you to sin and ask GOD to clean your heart so you can be guided by HIM today?

Part of the Plan

Part of the Plan

Acts 27: 39 When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. 40 Cutting loose the anchors, they left them in the sea and at the same time untied the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach. 41 But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.

42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping. 43 But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. 44 The rest were to get there on planks or on other pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land safely

============

When I got in the camper, I was excited to meet the driver, although he drove a bit slow. We finally crossed the border. The next day I expected to leave on time, but we left two and a half hours late and got lost for another hour and a half. Now, four hours late, we could not do the things we planned, to tell people about CHRIST in this neighborhood. GOD brought people out anyway.

  • Sometimes my plan includes impatience.
  • Sometimes my plan only includes what could go right.
  • Sometimes my plan does not include a promise GOD made.

Land was so close, everyone could see it. They devised another plan to get aground safely, probably so they could continue using the ship later. That plan was met with problem after problem. The entire trip seemed like a disaster from the time they left. Eventually, everyone made it to land alive, but the ship was lost. GOD’s plan to deliver Paul to Rome was still in action.

  • GOD wants me to see HIS plan in the middle of things going wrong.
  • GOD wants me to accept HIS plan when problem after problem comes.
  • GOD wants me to know HIS plan cannot be stopped, even when trials arise.

“How could this possibly be for good?” I have asked GOD on many occasion. I mean, it seems pretty bad right now, I would think while the problem was happening. BUT GOD’s plan is never like my plan.

HE knew the problem would occur and uses the trial to bring good I cannot always see. Many hearts turn to GOD when trouble occurs, mine included. HE then strengthens me to trust HIM more as HE delivers me from problem after problem. I am glad GOD knows how to grow me.

  • Are your plans going wrong?
  • Did you do or say something that seemed to turn into a disaster?
  • Will you place your trust in GOD today so HE can complete the great plan HE has for you?

Today’s Plan

John 12: Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

============

Ask, “What are you going to do today?”, to your team so they can become more productive. I thought this was a great question so I not only asked them, I asked myself. The answers I got were highly ambitious, yet productive. “I am going to get more done using this simple question” I thought to myself.

  • Some days I filled the hours with “being productive.”
  • Some days I woke up working all the way until I went to bed.
  • Some days I had no time for anything else but work.

JESUS went back to see Lazarus. Martha served JESUS as this was one of her gifts. Lazarus, being GOD’s example, sat with HIM. Mary saw JESUS’s dirty feet again. She remembered HIS reaction to the Pharisee who did not offer any water. I supposed she said, “Not in this house” as she used expensive oil and her hair to wipe away the mud.

  • JESUS wants my attention.
  • JESUS wants me to serve HIM.
  • JESUS wants my highest honor.

Since I am not omnipresent, I can only be in one place at one time. When I plan my day so full of “being productive” I sometimes miss out on doing what GOD called me to do. HE allows me to be busy, but there are times when HE wants me to quiet down and just be with HIM. I am glad part of GOD’s work is simply just being with HIM.

  • What are you going to do today?
  • Are you going to fill your day up so full that you cannot hear GOD?
  • Will you add GOD to your plan today and quiet down to listen to what HE wants to say?

Facing Decrees

Luke 2: And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife,  who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

============

As I walked out of the interview, something told me to speak with the official looking person walking towards the parking lot. The company I had just interviewed with was just placed on a global hiring freeze and I felt a bit dejected.

The person in the parking lot confirmed the statement but said something amazing. “Call our company. I am a recruiter.” I called and weeks later began working for that company.

  • Some human decrees seem devastating to me.
  • Some human decrees seem like they add hurdles to my life.
  • Some human decrees seem like snap judgments leaning towards greed.

Joseph and Mary had to do what the government said. Registering with the government meant more money for the government and Joseph complied. Little did he know that this decree was being used by GOD.

  • GOD places huge situations in front of me so I can tell it is HIM.
  • GOD uses human decrees for HIS good, even when I think the decree is harsh and filled with greed.
  • GOD has a plan for me that includes human decrees especially when humans think they are in control.

Whether it is government or work or an of track church, GOD laughs at human plans. “They think they are in control” HE giggles. The reality is GOD is in control. HE knew towns would be flooded with people who would stay at the best hotels, so HE took the lower route and had HIS SON born in a barn and laid in a dirty feeding trough.

GOD sees the enormity of various situations in my life as well. HE knows the barriers before me are laughable to HIM. HE carriers me through the troubles and lays me down beside HIS still waters of peace. GOD is my refuge.

  • Are you facing something huge?
  • Do you see a huge human decree that seems to be immovable?
  • Can you put your trust in GOD today knowing HE has already taken care of your situation in spite of what humans think?

Missed Message

Matthew 17: 22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.

============

“We are going to leave you here while we do some business so you can play with the other children” my parents said to me. I was highly upset and began to cry. When I got older I had to go with them to do errands. “Will this ever end? I want to play with my friends” I thought to myself.

  • Sometimes I miss the initial message of good news.
  • Sometimes I think everything is crumbling when it actually is bright and cheery.
  • Sometimes the bad news is all I hear even when the good news is coupled with it.

JESUS was a miracle machine! HE was healing people left and right. Mobs gathered to wait for HIM to hear HIM speak. They just knew HE would someday be a king, but in an earthly sense. When they heard the news of HIS impending death they were “filled with grief.” BUT GOD had a much better plan.

  • GOD’s plans for me are always better than I could ever imagine.
  • GOD’s plans for me are higher than I could ever think of.
  • GOD’s plans for me are to prosper me in HIS way and in HIS time.

JESUS had to be blamed and murdered in order to fulfill all prophecy spoken about HIM. HE remained sinless to be worthy enough to open the scroll of judgment on the earth. By HIS death and resurrection humanity could be saved. This is far better than a temporary king who would die off in a few years.

GOD wants me to hear HIS wonderful message even when bad news comes. HIS message to me is “I love you.”

  • Have you recently received bad news?
  • Do you replay bad news over and over in your head?
  • Can you stop thinking about the negative thoughts for a moment to listen to GOD’s message of grace and love for you?

First Thought

Matthew 15: 29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.

============

From a distance I could see the trouble coming so I made plans. When my plans started to disintegrate I made mitigation plans. When they failed, I cried out to GOD! “LORD, What?!”

  • Sometimes I try to handle things on my own.
  • Sometimes I try to fix problems using my wits.
  • Sometimes I try to jump in and modify the situation.

I was amazed when GOD stepped in and answered my prayers, even ones I hadn’t asked. Amazed and shocked, I walked away delighted. This lasted until the next problem came up. I could see the trouble coming. “Wait, I have been through this before. What should I do?” was my thought.

  • GOD says to me “I AM the first and the last, the Alpha and Omega.”
  • GOD says to me “Seek ME first and you will be blessed.”
  • GOD says to me “I AM the way, the truth and the life.”

Great crowds brought their hurting, broken and ailing friends and relatives to JESUS, maybe as a last ditch effort. They were amazed that this even worked!

I have noticed a difference in trouble patterns when I add CHRIST first. When I see the trouble coming from a distance, GOD wants me to cry out to HIM first, even if it is a false alarm. HE wants me to cry out with tiny issues and large. During the storm, GOD wants me to praise HIM!
  • What is your first thought when trouble hits?
  • When you see the slightest sign of trouble, can you turn to GOD?
  • Will you seek GOD first today instead of following your own plans?

Time to Grow

Isaiah 28: 16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,
    a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who relies on it
    will never be stricken with panic.
-------
23 Listen and hear my voice;
    pay attention and hear what I say.
24 When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually?
    Does he keep on breaking up and working the soil?
25 When he has leveled the surface,
    does he not sow caraway and scatter cumin?
Does he not plant wheat in its place,
    barley in its plot,
    and spelt in its field?
26 His God instructs him
    and teaches him the right way.
-------

29 All this also comes from the Lord Almighty,
    whose plan is wonderful,
    whose wisdom is magnificent.

============

It didn’t hit me until I was driving and the radio station faded out. The morning sun was shining in my face and I was headed to my new residence with bright aspirations. I finally realized this is not a drill. I was now about to embark on my career journey. Was I ready? Did I know enough? What if I fail?

  • There are times when I get nervous.
  • There are times when I am stricken with panic.
  • There are times when I have fear that causes me to race around lose sleep.

Being unsure of myself has popped in and out of my life numerous times. Sometimes I look at my abilities and shutter. Can I do the thing that I am facing?

  • GOD says to me “I have laid a precious tested, cornerstone as your foundation.”
  • GOD says to me “I will be your instructor and teach you the right way.”
  • GOD says to me “I have a wonderful plan for you.”

I should be unsure of myself because in life I am way in over my head. BUT GOD has “magnificent wisdom” and a “wonderful plan” for me. I must place my trust in HIS strength and let HIM fight my battles. HE is the one who prepares me and HE is the one who tells me when I am ready to grow. HE wants me to turn from preparation and go into planting seeds of encouragement. GOD is truly magnificent!

  • Are you nervous about your abilities?
  • Are you scared to try something new and more difficult?
  • Can you stop relying on your abilities and start relying on GOD’s “precious and tested” foundation?
  • Will you believe that HE has a better plan for you than your plan?

Plans for Success

Proverbs 16: To humans belong the plans of the heart,
    but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue.
All a person’s ways seem pure to them,
    but motives are weighed by the Lord.
Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
    and he will establish your plans.

============

Seated by last name I would most times end up in the back of the class. I was labeled as “The Professor” and my neighbors spied my tests with gaping eyes. One day, the teacher moved me next to the “smartest” in the class. She naively left her test uncovered. “I wonder if I should copy a few answers from her test” ran through my mind.

  • Sometimes my plans were not pure.
  • Sometimes my plans were not based with the right motive.
  • Sometimes my plans were not innocent as they seemed.

Desire does not provide an excuse for me to do things the wrong way. I mean just because the road is hard doesn’t mean I should cut corners or slack in my plans. What should I do?

  • GOD says to me “I want to bless all of your plans so put them in front of ME first.”
  • GOD says to me “I can see your motives so I will bless your plans based on them.”
  • GOD says to me “Give me your desire and I will make your path straight.”

My plans may not have the right motive. Instead of asking GOD for clear sight to be able to copy from my neighbor’s test, I should ask for a clear mind to prepare me for my own. In my life, GOD has never given me an easy route. It seems like HE won’t allow me to prosper when I think about stealing, cheating, lying or cutting a corner.

GOD wants me to place my plans in front of HIM and no matter how hard the situation, believe HE will guide me through the difficulties. GOD will establish my plans as long as I give them to HIM.

  • Are you planning something?
  • Do you have a certain picture in your mind of how things should go?
  • Can you ask GOD if the way you are going is right?
  • Will you ask GOD for direction, resources and fortitude to continue?
