Coming out of Hiding

Luke 1: 23 So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house. 24 Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”

============

“How’s the job search coming?” were the innocent yet increasingly annoying words from the community. Wanting to express their concern and solidarity was nice, but there were no jobs to be had in this extreme period of unemployment. “I just want to hide” were my thoughts.

  • There were times when I just wanted to hide.
  • There were times when I was ashamed and frustrated.
  • There were times when I wanted everything to be as everyone expected but they were not.

Whether it was traditional or not, Elizabeth hid herself differently than others. She may have had years and years of innocent people asking “Do you have kids?” as their first question. She may have had mixed emotions about this miracle baby as she moved herself away from the community for the last five months of her pregnancy. She could have been delighted and nervous, but for years prior, she carried herself with GOD’s peace.

  • GOD says to me “I will take care of you.”
  • GOD says to me “Do not be afraid of humans, but fear the LORD your GOD.”
  • GOD says to me “Do not be anxious for I have many promises for you.”

Walking in a spirit of peace is not always easy when those around me are anxious. BUT GOD gives me something to handle them and me, namely peace. GOD tells me to calm people down in the middle of storms and when I do, I in turn get calmed down.

HE wants me to show people that what is more important than their anxious question is my relationship with the living GOD. The peace that comes from HIM draws others to HIM and that is the mission HE gives me when I am in a trial.

  • Are people asking you their anxious questions?
  • Are you getting frustrated with their nervousness and disbelief?
  • Will you stop trying to gain their approval and seek to calm them down by telling them you are related to the all-powerful GOD who takes care of you everyday?

Known Belief

Luke 1: 18 And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

19 And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. 20 But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”

21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple. 22 But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.

============

“That couldn’t possibly be the answer” is what I said to myself because the solution was too easy. I mean all the other problems on the test seemed excruciatingly hard. Why was this one so easy? I decided to go with my second guess answer and chose to make my answer more complicated than it needed to be. I got that problem wrong, it was as easy as my first thought.

  • Sometimes I second guess.
  • Sometimes I rethink something that has already been thought out.
  • Sometimes my fears make me relook at something that is already planned and in the middle of execution.

Zacharias was a priest and probably knew the history of Abraham and Sarah having a baby in their advanced age, yet he questioned if GOD was able to do the same for him and his wife. Even though he knew an angel was standing in front of him, he still did not believe. I do the same. Sometimes I know what GOD can do and I second guess HIS methods.

  • GOD wants me to practice having faith in HIM so it will grow.
  • GOD wants me to take baby steps with my faith until I can handle larger amounts of faith.
  • GOD wants me to steadily grow in HIM so I can immediately believe what HE says to me without pouting about HIS timing.

GOD fulfills HIS words “in their own timing.” HIS plan is intricate and involves other people. Sometimes other people are not yet ready so the plan HE has for me gets extended. Zacharias motioned to the people to calm down rather than clutching his throat in pain.

He knew this slight gaff in belief caused him to become mute temporarily. This “timeout” more than likely strengthened his belief in what he already knew. He accepted GOD’s power and acted accordingly. GOD wants me to believe without question. This takes practice.

  • Do you doubt GOD?
  • Do you think HIS timing for HIS promised blessings are wrong?
  • Are you angry at GOD because HE chastens HIS chosen ones including you?
  • Will you believe in HIS ways immediately more and more each day?

Bright Future

Luke 1:So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

============

“You will never grow in this industry” said my professor as he was prepared to give me a failing grade. “Maybe his words would come true” I thought to myself. “Maybe the words of the teacher who believed in me were just a fantasy and I could never amount to anything” I added.

  • There were times when I doubted my future.
  • There were times when I did not believe amazing things could happen to me.
  • There were times when I believed what the negative people said.

Zacharias met an angel and feared for his life. The angel rested his mind by telling him the future of his one and only son to be. The angel did not speak of the hurt John would face, rather he said John would be “Great in the sight of the LORD.”

  • GOD wants me to believe I have a special purpose in life.
  • GOD wants me to use my special purpose to turn many people to the LORD their GOD.
  • GOD wants me to make ready HIS people for HIS return.

By human measures my future sometimes seems bleak. I have tried and failed at numerous things in my life. BUT GOD sees something different in me. HE fills me with HIS SPIRIT and gives me the ability to tell people that JESUS is the CHRIST who is my LORD and SAVIOR.

  • Do you feel awkward and left out?
  • Do you think you are not special?
  • Can you stop measuring yourself by the world’s standards and allow GOD to use the powerful gifts and talents HE has given you for HIS purpose today?

Heart Timing

Luke 1: There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

============

“LORD can I please have ___” was a prayer I prayed numerous times. The first time I prayed it, I opened my eyes and was immediately disappointed with GOD because whatever I asked for did not magically appear. I tried something different. I tried being good for a while so maybe GOD would put the answer to my prayer in my stocking. HE was silent for years.

  • Sometimes I got mad at GOD for HIS slowness.
  • Sometimes I prayed in desperation to GOD only to be met with silence.
  • Sometimes I asked GOD over and over and nothing came to fruition.

Zacharias and Elizabeth walked with the LORD and GOD was pleased with them, but they had no child because Elizabeth was barren and they were both well advanced in years. It sounded like they wanted children, but, alas they relegated their expectations to serving GOD without getting the desires of their heart.

  • GOD wants me to place the desires of my heart in front of HIM without timing expectations.
  • GOD wants me to ask for anything and expect to receive it, but not in my frantic timing.
  • GOD wants me to depend on HIM for all my answers but do it with patience and endurance.

Temporary goodness is easily seen by GOD. HE can tell when I am trying to get something from HIM and when I manipulate the situation by straightening up for a second then immediately go back to my old ways once I get what I want. GOD wants me to truly follow HIM without pouting over HIS timing. HE deserves praise daily.

  • Are you tired of waiting so you have started complaining about GOD?
  • Has GOD taken care of you and you have not recognized HIS care?
  • Can you continue to walk blameless before the LORD by telling people about the grace HE has given you today?

Influence the Influencer

Luke 1: Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

============

It was getting late and I was getting nowhere. A thought popped in my head. I ran to a person in the house and said “Will you ask if I can go to the party tonight for me?” This was my last ditch plea.

  • Sometimes I want someone to speak on my behalf.
  • Sometimes I want someone who has influence to speak for me.
  • Sometimes I want someone to touch people I cannot touch.

Luke starts off this tremendous account of JESUS by telling Theophilus that he was a firsthand witness to what JESUS had done. Luke uses “Most excellent” to describe Theophilus recognizing his title in the community. Perhaps this in-depth account of reality would spark Theophilus to tell others in the community.

  • GOD wants me to reach those who can reach others.
  • GOD wants me to tell others about the great things HE has done in my life.
  • GOD wants me to give an account of what HE has done in my life so others will tell their stories.

“Sit down, I have something very important to tell you” is the attitude in which GOD wants me to bring up HIS SON.  HE wants me to be very careful not to point to myself, making me look good in the process. HE wants people to see HIS SON so they can praise HIM and repair their broken relationship with HIM.

GOD wants me to go to those who have influence over many so they can tell others about the Great News of JESUS CHRIST. HE alone will guide me to those who truly believe and steer me away from those who have big crowds but point only to themselves. GOD’s message needs to be pure.

  • Do you know someone you can influence to talk about CHRIST?
  • Can you tell them to tell others about GOD?
  • Will you be open enough to tell people your story so others will renew their relationship with GOD today?

Signs of Passion

Mark 16: 19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

============

“Why am I doing this?” was my question as I continued doing the thankless job. It seemed like no one cared about what I was doing at the time so each time I did what I was doing, it became more of a chore. One day someone said, “I have been watching you for years. What makes you do what you do?” “Wow!” I thought to myself. “What should I say?”

  • There were times when I wanted a sign that I was doing the right thing.
  • There were times when I wanted to give up because I did not have a sign.
  • There were times when I wanted someone to at least thank me for what I was doing.

After seeing JESUS absorbed into heaven and witnessed HIM sitting at the right hand of GOD, the disciples had passion like you would never believe. They went everywhere and told everyone they could meet that JESUS CHRIST is LORD.  JESUS did not just let them go alone. HE went with them confirming everything they said about HIM. HE gave signs so that others may believe.

  • JESUS wants me to go out and speak about HIM with passion.
  • JESUS wants me to have passion without the need for signs.
  • JESUS wants me to be excited about HIM and HE will provide the right words at the right time.

GOD wants passion from me. HE doesn’t require much from me at all, but when I show passion for HIM, HE gives me evidence that HE is working through me by drawing many people to HIM. JESUS rewards my passion for HIM and that is all I need.

  • Are you looking for signs?
  • Do you feel discouraged because you haven’t seen what you are looking for from HIM?
  • Can you renew your passion about JESUS by simply telling people about HIM today?

Rewarded Belief

Mark 16: 14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

============

After the thing broke I looked at the instructions again. “Do not do xyz” were words I had glanced over in the complicated directions and I had to go back to the store and buy another gizmo. My instinct was wrong.

  • Sometimes I act on instinct.
  • Sometimes my instinct is based on my experiences.
  • Sometimes my experiences may have been limited so I act on what I have seen.

After being chased by the military, the disciples somehow met up together, cowering in a room. They were probably telling their individual war stories of how they narrowly escaped the clutches of death. JESUS appears to them and was stern with HIS words.

HE was addressing a belief problem because the disciples doubted HIS instructions that HE would rise from the dead. Even though witnesses saw HIM, they still would not believe.

  • JESUS wants me to believe in HIM on a daily basis.
  • JESUS wants me to believe that situations are temporary but a relationship with HIM is eternal.
  • JESUS wants me to believe that HE has every situation in HIS hands in spite of how it seems.

“I have a plan to prosper you, not harm you” is what JESUS says. HE also says “No one can pluck you out of MY hand.” He further says “I will be with you always, even until the end of the age.” When HE says these promises, HE is not speaking at an unknown future, HE is speaking from the past because it has already happened and HE is just assuring me that my journey will be fine.

  • Do you doubt GOD because of your circumstances?
  • Do you feel like hiding in a room and not facing the world’s challenges?
  • Can you stop depending on the news and start depending on the GOOD NEWS about CHRIST today?
  • Will you take on HIS directions and tell as many people about HIS goodness in spite of your circumstances?

Unbelievable

Mark 16: 12 After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.

============

“Aw go back to bed” said the person in the top bunk as I tried to give him an urgent message. I went to the only bathroom in the house very early in the morning. I didn’t have my glasses on but I could clearly see that on the rim of the tub was a mouse on its hind legs. “You were dreaming” I was told.

  • There were times when I stated the facts and was not believed.
  • There were times when I stated something that seemed farfetched.
  • There were times when I said something that was the truth that were not believed and rebutted with “that is your story.”

Two disciples walked with the risen LORD for a while. Other accounts say that JESUS spoke to them in marvelous ways with such passion as they never heard before. When they went to tell others, they were met with disbelief. I wonder if the people said “You were dreaming” to both men.

  • JESUS wants me to tell people about the amazing thing HE did for me.
  • JESUS wants me to proclaim HIS message of salvation to many who may not believe.
  • JESUS wants me to continue following HIM, even when it looks crazy to do so.

“Won’t you believe me?” is my question sometimes when I tell people about GOD. I mean this is an eternal decision, yet the message sometimes falls on deaf ears. GOD wants me to have the fortitude to see beyond those who will not believe at this moment.

HE never lets HIS word go out without some return. HE wants me to plant seeds in some, in others HE wants me to water the seed and still in others HE wants me to pick the fruit of the growth. GOD wants me to be consistent and that consistency is my faith in HIM whether I am believed or not.

  • Are you telling people about GOD and are met with disbelief?
  • Are you getting discouraged because people have rejected you?
  • Can you continue in your faith knowing GOD is with you today?

Wanted and Needed

Mark 16: Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.

============

After a brief discussion, I hung up the phone. Thirty minutes later I received a call from the hiring manager. “We want you to come here.” Ten days later I was working in a new state.

  • Being wanted is a great feeling.
  • Being desired feels wonderful.
  • Being needed makes me work a bit harder.

When JESUS rose, HE could have chosen the leaders of the day to appear to first, yet HE chose a woman who was helpless to her demons at one point in her life. She needed HIM to be GOD in her life to miraculously get her out of the situation she was in. She was grateful for all HE did for her and was dedicated to showing it the rest of her life.

  • JESUS wants me to want HIM.
  • JESUS wants me to need HIM.
  • JESUS wants me to desire HIS ways every day.

Head knowledge about JESUS is not enough. The church leaders “knew” about GOD but did not want HIM or need HIM. They wanted and needed money and power, but not GOD. When Mary Magdalene told the disciples that JESUS was alive, they did not believe her, probably because she “wanted” HIM to be alive and they wanted a king who would appoint them to seats.

GOD wants me to want HIM the way HE is. I’d rather need GOD daily than to be the wealthiest person and not know GOD.

  • Do you need GOD?
  • Do you desire to be with JESUS today?
  • Can you seek a relationship with GOD that accepts HIM the way HE is, just like HE accepted you the way you are?

Frightened Excitedly

Mark 16:But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.”

So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

============

Hearing my name called over the school intercom amongst others was a bit disturbing and intriguing at the same time. I recognized the names so I knew we weren’t in trouble. “You passed the test and got into the high tech high school” the principal said to us. I ran down the hall excited but now a bit disturbed as I had never been to a school this large before.

  • Sometimes I get frightened by some exciting news.
  • There were times when I heard some great news yet walked away frightened by the next steps.
  • Sometimes I hear great things but get nervous about the future of that news.

An angel spoke casually to the two Mary’s. He tried to keep them as calm as possible but the news was just too overwhelming. He told them “You seek JESUS of Nazareth, who was crucified. HE is risen!” This bold statement was too much to comprehend so he tried to show the evidence by telling them to look at the rolled away stone and the empty tomb, but they were too excited and frightened.

  • JESUS wants me to know HE is alive and in control of my situation.
  • JESUS wants me to “Not be alarmed” but to be excited about HIS daily guidance.
  • JESUS wants me to tell many people about HIM rather than focusing on the negatives around me.

Even though the strong military force who was looking for anyone associated with JESUS could find the two Mary’s, that was the least of their concern. They had a flood of emotions that included amazement and fright at the same time. GOD had blessed them with “first response” news that was a huge responsibility to tell. HE does the same with me and it is up to me to respond.

  • Are you called by GOD to spread HIS great news?
  • Have you gotten frightened by life that you feel paralyzed to speak about JESUS in an excited way?
  • Can you get your focus back and begin speaking about CHRIST, who saved you, today?

Drive and Determination

Mark 16: Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.

============

Ignoring all the rules, I noticed one person rise to the top. He pushed at people and ignored what they did and who they were. “Maybe I should be pushy so I can get ahead” I thought to myself.

  • There were times when I wanted to be the one who pushed people around.
  • There were times when I wanted to be on top.
  • There were times when I wanted to “do what it takes” to be perceived as strong.

When everyone who followed JESUS was in hiding, two Mary’s were still plotting how to serve HIM one last time. They had no tomb to give HIM so they wanted to do something special for HIM even though HE was dead.

On Saturday the two Mary’s began their plan by buying the best spices they could. On Sunday, at the crack of dawn, they put their plan into action, but they ran into a snag. “Who will roll away the stone?” They did not know it was already taken care of for them.

  • JESUS wants me to have drive to follow HIM especially when it seems like HE is silent.
  • JESUS wants me to have determination to serve HIM even when it feels hopeless.
  • JESUS wants me to have fortitude to continue especially when life puts huge stones in front of me.

Gentleness instead of pushiness is a great way to demonstrate determination. The two Mary’s, while determined, did not plot to hurt people in the process of serving GOD, Their plan took drive that only came from GOD and they would not stop until they did what they sought out to do. I appreciate their gentle example.

  • Are you willing to give up when GOD wants you to continue?
  • Do you think drive and determination looks like pushiness?
  • Can you change your perspective of drive and determination to add faith and fortitude to continue in the plan GOD has for you?

Anticipation

Mark 15: 42 Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. 45 So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.

============

“Is the mail here?” I asked again. I was waiting to get a prize of a free kite from sending in some huge number of box tops from the cereal I had been eating. One day there was a box with my name on it. I had not received much mail in my life, let alone to have a “box” addressed to me from a company!  I hurried to open my prize and to my delight there was my first kite.

  • There were times when I waited on something special to me.
  • There were times when I sat and watched for something special to happen.
  • There were times when I was filled with anticipation of something good to come.

Waiting on the kingdom of GOD was probably something Joseph of Arimathea had done since childhood. When he saw the miracles of JESUS, he immediately knew he had seen GOD in the flesh. As short lived as it was, he saw what he had been waiting for and wanted to serve this dead GOD one last time, or so he thought.

  • JESUS loves when I wait on HIM with faith.
  • JESUS loves when I seek HIS return on a daily basis.
  • JESUS loves when I spend a little time with HIM each day waiting on HIS direction.

JESUS has promised HE would return someday. In the meantime, HE wants me to serve HIS kingdom on a daily basis. Yes, I want stuff and sometimes I get stuff and sometimes I lose stuff, but the kingdom of GOD is so much more. GOD gives me peace that stuff cannot.

HE walks with me, guiding my creativity so I can honor HIM for what HE has bestowed on me. I wait on HIM daily.

  • What are you waiting on?
  • Does the thing you are waiting on cause you grief?
  • Can you set your anticipation on GOD instead of putting such high credence in the thing you are waiting on today?

Special Shout

Special Shout
Mark 15: 38 Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 So when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who also followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

============

“Hey, watch out!” cried someone to me. I was half way paying attention but still motioning towards the street. I stopped walking before the car sped past me. I am glad I heard the bystander.

Sometimes I need my attention grabbed.
Sometimes I need someone to scream rescuing words to me.
Sometimes I need a shout that is in my favor.

This was no ordinary shout from JESUS. When HE cried out with a shout, things happened. The earth shook and the veil of the temple was torn in two “from top to bottom.” HIS murderers realized the mistake they made by killing the SON of GOD.

JESUS saved me with HIS shout.
JESUS saved me when HE said “It is finished.”
JESUS saved me when HE said “FATHER I commend MY SPIRIT to YOU.”

The price had been paid. All blame for sin had been accounted for. The women followers were there to witness all of this from a distance. The guards were looking for the disciples who were scattered in safety. During this chaotic time, JESUS’s cry was heard by everyone. HIS shout is still heard today.

Do you need rescue from walking blindly through life?
Do you think it is your power that will enable you to fix everything?
Can you listen to GOD today as HE is trying to guide you towards HIS marvelous plan for you?

Forsaken

Mark 15: 33 Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” 36 Then someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”

37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.

============

After a very bad day, I left work to catch the train. It was raining and I wasn’t dressed properly. At least the train ride wouldn’t be long because I parked in my “free” location. When I arrived at my car I noticed a dent the shape of the end of a baseball bat. I guess my observation skills were slow as I also saw my windows were attacked. “Why is this happening?!” I cried out.

  • There were times when I had some very bad days.
  • There were times when I wanted to just scream.
  • There were times when it felt like nothing was going right.

After a strange and mysterious darkness, JESUS says something similar to my cry. “MY GOD MY GOD, why have YOU forsaken ME?” This cry of anguish could only come from a human experiencing a great deal of stress. But this was no ordinary human.

  • JESUS saw it was no gain to be GOD and decided to suffer and die so I would not have to.
  • JESUS knows what it feels like to be misunderstood and blamed for HIS existence.
  • JESUS can empathize, sympathize and rationalize all of the feelings I have because HE felt the same way.

Half way listening, the crowd thought JESUS was crying out to Elijah instead of hearing HIS empathetic anguish. They had no idea what GOD was doing on the cross. Sometimes I have no idea what HE is doing too. When I scream out “Why?!” I want whatever pain I’m going through to end right away.

JESUS knows what I am going through, just like the FATHER knew what JESUS would have to go through. This permanent transformation to humanity included a special relationship change between the FATHER and JESUS. Now JESUS would be the only human that fully understands the power of GOD, because HE IS GOD. HE can forgive me because HE knows what I go through.

  • Are you crying out to GOD?
  • Do you feel forsaken?
  • Will you give your anguish to GOD today and allow HIM to give you peace HIS way?

Shame Line

Mark 15: 27 With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. 28 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with the transgressors.”

29 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

31 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”

Even those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

============

“You must attend the meeting” said my employment lawyer as she coached me through maximizing the exit package. During the meeting I could hear overt conversations. “Why is he presenting? He won’t be here anyway.” Another said “Maybe he is trying to do a last ditch effort to save his job.”

  • There have been times when I have been shamed.
  • There have been times when people who once were “with” me, said plenty of words against me.
  • There have been times when I could hear the insults and could not even respond.

Powerful people tried to add insult to injury as they looked at JESUS in disgust. GOD was lumped in with the bad guys even though HE committed no sin. Known felons were not insulted, but JESUS was. Even one of the criminals, who was dying right next to JESUS,  hurled insults at HIM.

  • JESUS says to me “They will hate you because of ME.”
  • JESUS says to me “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
  • JESUS says to me “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Insults never feel good and I have dished out many. Looking back I have joined in on the shame line to hurl insults at people, maybe not at their face, but in smaller gossipy places. GOD has forgiven so much from me. HE took the shame without cursing as HE said “FATHER forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.” I am grateful for HIS shame.

  • Are you full of shame right now?
  • Have you joined in to shame someone even if it was done in gossip?
  • Will you give your shame to GOD, whether you received it or dished it out, today?

Divvy it up

Mark 15: 22 And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. 24 And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

25 Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of His accusation was written above:

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

“Can I have that desk mat and the in-box?” Someone had been released from the company so I took the liberty to get some of the goodies left behind. I mean, this person couldn’t use it anyway.

  • There were times when I blindly scavenged.
  • There were times when I grabbed stuff from those I would never see again in this lifetime.
  • There were times when I inherited someone’s junk without remembering their name or what they were about.

“Well that was a short reign… Let’s get HIS stuff” seemed to be the thought as the people cared more about HIS stuff than what HE stood for. Someone tried to give HIM a little comfort by giving HIM wine mingled with myrrh, but there was no comfort for JESUS as HE hung on the cross.

  • GOD wants me to focus on HIS blessings daily rather than the stuff I can scavenge.
  • GOD wants me to be delighted in HIM rather than the stuff I can acquire.
  • GOD wants me to recognize HIM as King in a real way, not as HIS mockers.

Since things did not go as expected, people gave up on JESUS being their King. HIS crime was inscribed as “THE KING OF THE JEWS” so no one would ever try to go against the current government regime. Their hearts were only focused on what they could get, not on who HE was and is. GOD wants me to see who HE was and is and is to come. My future lies in HIS hands.

  • Are you focused on getting stuff?
  • Are you complaining about someone else’s stuff?
  • Will you stop looking at what stuff you have or do not have and look at how GOD wants you to serve people today?

Immediate Fame

Mark 15: 21 Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.

============

Sitting alphabetically was not in my favor this time. I wound up sitting around a couple of people who actually were doing the stuff to get my teacher’s attention, not in a good way. My teacher must have noticed something going on this particular day as she summoned me to her desk. Not knowing if I were in trouble or not, I walked timidly to her realm. “Go to the office…” I got nervous. “And get the movie projector.” I was relieved!

  • Once I was chosen because of what bullies were doing.
  • This one time I was chosen because the bullies were rowdy and I just happened to be there.
  • One time I was chosen to do work but it did not seem like work because I was chosen.

Compelled is such a nice word that was used to describe the bullying from the soldiers. A Cyrenian named Simon just happened to be at the wrong place at the right time. He was forced to serve the Living GOD by carrying HIS cross. The guards were totally unaware that their actions would make this family famous.

  • GOD tells me to “Take up my cross daily.”
  • GOD says to me “Bear one another’s cross.”
  • GOD implores me to “Love one another, just as I have loved you.”

The cross represents a painful execution method in this passage, however it means something else daily. GOD wants me to not only have sympathy, but empathy as I go through the pain of life “with” people.

Simon’s immediate fame was ordained by GOD. While the long walk was painful, embarrassing and degrading to Simon’s character, he would now be mentioned as being part of the Great News about CHRIST! GOD wants me to have a part in this as well. Through my circumstances HE adds my reward that HE will give me in heaven.

  • Are you going through something difficult?
  • Does it look like the bullies have forced you to do something degrading?
  • Does it seem hopeless at times?
  • Can you allow GOD to use this situation for HIS purpose?

Dishing It Out

Mark 18: 16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. 17 And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, 18 and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. 20 And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

============

“She is a drunk” laughed the students in my class. I joined in on the laughter as I did not like this teacher anyway. She seemed to be very mean and I enjoyed everyone bringing her down a notch.

  • There have been times when I joined in with those who mocked people.
  • There have been times when I felt great being part of the crowd who was ridiculing a person.
  • There have been times when I delighted in talking about a person in a negative way.

JESUS was going to be executed, yet the soldiers took time to stage a fake military leadership gathering in order to mock HIM. The planning took time so that all the soldiers could be there, more than likely standing in their ranks. Hundreds gathered. It must have taken hours as they stood waiting to get their turn to get their jab in. Some thought “Maybe I’ll hit HIM with a stick.”

  • GOD wants me to understand I have the same hatred as any other person.
  • GOD wants me to know that only HE can remove my hatred and replace it with HIS grace.
  • GOD wants me to remember what HE went through in order to rescue me.

JESUS had a beating that was fueled by misguided hatred. That hatred started out as a small ember of dislike, then grew into a raging fire of hatred. GOD wants me to realize that I may not like everyone, but I need to love everyone, just as HE does.

  • Is there someone in your life who just rubs you the wrong way?
  • Are you letting that person transform you into a cold bitter person?
  • Can you examine your heart and ask GOD to transform it into HIS heart of compassion?

Crowd Pleasers

Mark 15:Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested. And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion. Then the multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them. But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them. 12 Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”

13 So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”

14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?”

But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”

15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.

============

Uncomfortably I sat at my desk. The shirt had too much starch from the cleaners and the stiff collar was cutting into my neck. When I got back from lunch I looked down and had something on my tie. “Oh no! How am I going to go to the next meeting like this?” I groused.

  • There have been times when I wanted to look good in front of people.
  • There have been times when I wanted to please the crowd no matter how I truly felt.
  • There have been times when I wanted to make a good appearance rather than do what I wanted to do.

The church leaders wanted their way so badly that they would do anything to get it. Pilate was a political puppet, used to officially do the dirty work that was in the church leader’s hearts. They saw their chance may be slipping away so they stirred up the crowd to release a known murderer. The crowd was led to a destructive decision, let Barabbas free.

  • GOD wants me to do what is compassionate from HIS perspective.
  • GOD wants me to follow HIM even if it is not a popular decision.
  • GOD wants me to seek HIS kingdom first which may mean being unpopular.

Seeking to fit in may sometimes be a dangerous road. When the crowd rejects GOD and blames those who follow HIM, I have a serious decision to make. “Do I reject GOD too and fit in or do I be a misfit and follow GOD?” I choose the latter of the two. Following GOD is not always popular, but it it truly worth it!

  • Are you trying to please the crowd?
  • Do you think it would be better if you fit in rather than following GOD?
  • Will you choose GOD over fitting in so HE can guide you to a better place?
