Promise Offered

Promise Offered

Hebrews 4: Now, God has offered us the promise that we may receive that rest he spoke about. Let us take care, then, that none of you will be found to have failed to receive that promised rest. For we have heard the Good News, just as they did. They heard the message, but it did them no good, because when they heard it, they did not accept it with faith. We who believe, then, do receive that rest which God promised. It is just as he said,

“I was angry and made a solemn promise:
    ‘They will never enter the land where I would have given them rest!’”
He said this even though his work had been finished from the time he created the world.

============

Facing turmoil caused me to lay awake at night. Trouble here and trouble there made my mind continue to spin a web of unresolved questions. I wanted to get some rest, but couldn’t. In fact, just looking at the clock in the middle of the night, made me more anxious that I needed rest to survive the day.

  • I was exhausted.
  • I was worried and could not find rest.
  • I figured that I was on my own and “I” had to come up with the solution, but could not.

Paul, the assumed writer, mentions “promised rest” from GOD. The ancestors refused to believe GOD and did not receive HIS “promised rest.” The writer warns everyone to believe in the Goon News about JESUS, so we can receive this “promised rest.”

My Observations

  • Trying to control life makes me lose rest.
  • GOD wants me to give HIM control so I can get some rest.
  • Scary moments must be given to GOD so HE can provide the right solution.

“Come unto me all you that are heavy laden and I will give you rest” is the promise given to me. But sometimes I don’t believe it is that easy.  I try to give “it” to GOD, but then I peek to see if HE has fixed the situation to my liking and in my time. When I don’t see the results I was looking for, I jump in with “my” plan, possibly tearing up other people with my actions. BUT GOD has another way.

JESUS wants me to have rest. HE wants me to have peace that is beyond understanding. As scary as life is, GOD is in control of every situation. Belief in HIM providing rest in this life and the next raises my hope. I am glad GOD has all my scary situations.

Challenge

  • What rest is the writer speaking about?
  • Have you ever worried so much that you could not get any sleep?
  • Will you place your trust in the LORD today so HE can give you rest in all situations?

Comforted and Established

Comforted and Established

2 Thessalonians 1: 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.

============

Directionless, penniless and hopeless was where I had gotten. Bills kept coming and creditors kept calling, yet I had no way to give them any money and I had no job. Parties seemed to be more of a nuisance than consolation, but that’s all I knew at the time.

  • I wanted some relief.
  • I wanted to not have any worries, but had plenty.
  • I wanted to be out of the trial, but had no way out, or so I thought.

Paul, Silas and Timothy gave a small prayer to those who believe in JESUS as the Savior. They explained that JESUS and GOD the FATHER have shown mankind a great amount of love, consolation and hope. Now they ask for “comfort” and to “establish you in every good word and work.”

My Observations

  • GOD the FATHER, GOD the SON and GOD the HOLY SPIRIT agreed on what it would take to love me and console me and to give me hope.
  • Even when I experience trouble, the HOLY SPIRIT provides me with comfort.
  • GOD establishes me in HIS plan to provide a good word and a good work.

All good things come from GOD. I mean, love, everlasting consolation, hope and grace seem to be wonderful things to accept as a gift from a loving GOD. Unfortunately, my worries or desires get in the way. I blame GOD, doubt GOD or walk away from GOD when things are not going as I wanted them to. BUT GOD is merciful.

HE sees me with HIM in eternity because I believe I need a Savior, which is JESUS CHRIST. HE consoles my every regret. HE comforts my heart and give me a word to give to others. HE then gives me purpose which is my work. I am grateful for GOD doing everything to keep me with HIM.

Challenge

  • Can you feel the love GOD is trying to give you through the writers?
  • Have you ever had a time when you doubted GOD, got mad at HIM or threatened to leave HIM?
  • Will you accept HIS wonderful gift of love, everlasting consolation, good hope, grace, comfort, good word and good work today?

Prayer

Dear LORD please bless this reader with YOUR comfort today. Address all worries he or she may have. Provide the comfort that only comes from YOU. Open our eyes to your plan so we may do the work YOU desire. amen

Finding Peace

Finding Peace

Philippians 4: Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.

============

“Can I please have a name brand shoe?” was my request. After years of trying, I realized I was not going to get the fashionable items from my parents. Their hard earned money was used for bills, or at least that’s what they said. When I was old enough I got a job. I bought name brand shoes. “LORD, please don’t have it rain today” was my ask.

  • I wanted people to see my new shoes.
  • I did not want “my” shoes to get dirty from rain or dirty places.
  • I was proud that I was finally able to buy shoes without the oppression of a budget.

Paul provides some quick, yet sage advice to contentment. He knew that living in this world would bring on temptations to have nice things. He also knew people would become discontent by not having these things. He suggested a much better way of thinking about things, namely “be thankful.”

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to be thankful for JESUS saving me.
  • GOD wants me to be thankful for all that HE has brought me through.
  • GOD wants me to be thankful for the people, places and things in my life so I can see that I am abundantly blessed.

Being thankful for people reduces rage over something he or she did. Also, being thankful for the places GOD has me in, opens my eyes to the ministry HE has given me to reap abundant rewards. When I am thankful for the old worn out thing, I reduce my being discontent.

GOD sees thankfulness as a sacred place. Kinda like an elevator reaching a floor. Once I reach the level of thankfulness, GOD says “Here, have peace.” HE then opens my mind and my heart to HIS safety that does not make sense to those who seek other people, places and things for their peace. I am grateful GOD reminds me that peace can be found by thankfulness of HIM.

Challenge

  • What things does the writer suggest you pray for?
  • Have you ever been discontent with the things you have?
  • Have you ever received something and wanted something else that is similar, later?
  • Will you be thankful for who you are, what you have, the people in your life, the things you have and where GOD has you , so you can reach HIS peace HE wants you to have today?

Share in the Help

Share in the Help

1 Corinthians 17: Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the merciful Father, the God from whom all help comes! He helps us in all our troubles, so that we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from God. Just as we have a share in Christ's many sufferings, so also through Christ we share in God's great help. If we suffer, it is for your help and salvation; if we are helped, then you too are helped and given the strength to endure with patience the same sufferings that we also endure. So our hope in you is never shaken; we know that just as you share in our sufferings, you also share in the help we receive.

============

Being out of work made me worry about everything. I had never been out of work before and my total dependence was on “my” salary and self-esteem was tied into “my” title. I sat in a group of out of work people at a church.

“Help other people” was the message. “Wait! I need help” I thought to myself. I volunteered at a food pantry and helped others get jobs. I found peace that didn’t make sense.

  • I had lost sight of other people suffering.
  • I had fallen into the trap of working so hard that I could not see people who needed help.
  • I had forgotten that I had nothing, at one point, and was given much.

Paul reminds everyone that GOD the FATHER provides the help. This is a different perspective than GOD the Punisher. Paul then explains that since we get help from the FATHER, we are supposed to help others. But when we suffer, others should help us.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to see other people in need, even when I am in need.
  • GOD wants me to understand that HE provides all help that I receive and give.
  • GOD wants me to give thanks to HIM for any help I have received by helping someone else and being glad about it.

GOD sees me in good times and bad. HE knows when my heart is in anguish and when it is elated. HE knows when to send me to someone or when I need help from others.

The FATHER rarely gets credit for wanting to help. I mean, sometimes I think that if I broke HIS rules, HE is ready to hit me on the head with a supernatural stick. The FATHER loves. I am grateful to receive HIS help.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about GOD the FATHER?
  • Do you sometimes think you are being punished more than you are being loved?
  • Can you help someone in the middle of your pain?
  • Wil you share where help comes from by receiving help or giving it and praying for those who suffer in the same way you are suffering today?

Free From Worry

Free From Worry

1 Corinthians 7: 32 I would like you to be free from worry. An unmarried man concerns himself with the Lord's work, because he is trying to please the Lord. 33 But a married man concerns himself with worldly matters, because he wants to please his wife; 34 and so he is pulled in two directions. An unmarried woman or a virgin concerns herself with the Lord's work, because she wants to be dedicated both in body and spirit; but a married woman concerns herself with worldly matters, because she wants to please her husband.

35 I am saying this because I want to help you. I am not trying to put restrictions on you. Instead, I want you to do what is right and proper, and to give yourselves completely to the Lord's service without any reservation.

============

Worried about the test, I tried to study to no avail. The solution to my worry was clear, go to a party and search for drunken sex. Worried about the car, I tried to fix it myself to no avail. The solution to my worry was clear, go to a party and search for drunken sex.

  • There have been many times that my worries got to me.
  • There have been many times when I thought temporary relief would fix the problem.
  • There have been many times when I searched for a way out of the problem with my own worldly solution.

Paul gives an odd statement. He says “I would like you to be free from worry.” This statement was about marriage and the problems people raised concerning the difficulty it brings with service to the LORD. Paul gives a solution to the married and unmarried.

  • GOD wants me to do what is right and proper for HIS kingdom.
  • GOD wants me to give myself to HIM without reservation.
  • GOD wants me to serve HIM by giving myself to HIM completely.

Married or unmarried, every human belongs to the LORD. I mean, any service outside the LORD is a distraction from bearing HIS fruit. My desires should be on pleasing the LORD at all costs. This would include my family, friends and neighbors.

The world would rather silence any discussion about JESUS to make profit the primary message. BUT GOD wants and needs to be heard through HIS servants. I am grateful HE frees me to speak about HIM daily.

  • Are you trapped?
  • Do you feel like the world has you and there is no escape?
  • Will you do what is right and proper and seek GOD wherever you are so you can serve HIM without reservation little by little each day?

Hesitance

Hesitance
Acts 9: 13 Then Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.”

15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children[c] of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.”

============

“Come serve with me in a country in Africa” was the challenge posed to me. The image that popped in my mind was a starving baby with flies circling, for that was the primary image chosen from the country I lived in.

I hesitated in my response. “Get up and go” was the overwhelming feeling inside me. Family added to the fear with questions about the unknown. When I arrived in the country for the missions trip, it was a booming metropolis with skyscrapers and fast food joints. What was I worried about?

  • There were times when the situation made me hesitate on my decision.
  • There were times when the unknown made me think twice about doing what I was called to do.
  • There were times when the circumstance seemed dismal and made me stop and think “should I do this?”

Ananias seemed hesitant in going to Saul. Whether it was his own safety or the fact that he was serving a known killer, he questioned the calling. BUT GOD confirmed the mission.

  • GOD wants me to trust in HIS plan regardless of the circumstance.
  • GOD wants me to believe HE has a larger picture than the one I can see.
  • GOD wants me to obey HIS calling even though I may have questions.

“Are YOU sure?” is a question that pops in my head sometimes when I hear from GOD. I mean, usually the question comes because I am asked to do something beyond what I thought I should be doing.

GOD’s power is endless and mine is nothing. GOD wants me to believe in HIS power, protection and provision whenever HE calls me to serve HIM. I am grateful HE calls me.

  • Are you being called and are hesitant?
  • Does the circumstance seem dismal, yet GOD wants you to serve HIM anyway?
  • Will you accept HIS calling and obey the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT today?

Scared

John 12: 27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.”

Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”

29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”

============

“I’m not going down there!” I said in terror. With fears of the “Boogey Man” being in the basement of our home, I refused to go downstairs unless someone was with me. All the lights had to be on.

  • Sometimes I get scared of the unknown.
  • Sometimes I get worried about situations people have told me about.
  • Sometimes I get filled with fear over a huge situation facing me.

Death was facing JESUS and HIS humanity showed. HE expressed HIS fear out loud. THE FATHER heard HIS voice and responded with assurance. JESUS accepted the responsibility.

  • GOD is there when I have fears.
  • GOD is there when I have doubts.
  • GOD is there when I worry about big situations.

Worry easily creeps in when the answer to a problem is out of my control. I mean when I cannot do something to resolve the situation, my mind spins, trying to come up with a solution. BUT GOD knows the outcome.

HE wants me to trust that HE has the situation under control and HE can use the circumstance for HIS glory. HE rewards me greatly for obeying HIS plan and for this I am grateful.

  • Are you worried?
  • Is there a very large situation in front of you that seems too big to handle?
  • Will you ask GOD to not only give you strength, but comfort as well?

Worry Actions

Luke 12: 22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 If you then are not able to do the least, why [d]are you anxious for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?

============

Three o’clock in the morning was not unfamiliar to me. I had woken up many nights facing the pressures of work. Some nights, sleep evaded me altogether. After several years of this, the company decided to get rid of an entire group, including me. No more pressures. Why was I awake in the middle of the night?

  • My thoughts can sometimes get the best of me.
  • My mind can sometimes overthink situations.
  • My security can be shattered when I do not have answers to the questions my mind conjures up.

JESUS tells HIS disciples “Do not worry” as if they had a choice in the matter. But then HE explains “why” they should not worry, which kind of defies logic. HE explains that GOD’s raging river of a plan cannot be stopped. HE says GOD cares about feeding birds, HE can certainly care about feeding humans, who HE created in HIS image.

  • GOD cares about my physical attributes.
  • GOD cares about my mental wellbeing.
  • GOD cares about my comfort, my health, my relationships and my spirit.

GOD does care for me so I must get a grip on the lies my mind can dream up and focus on the truth. HIS plan seems strange, especially when I feel I am in control of my life. HE puts me in situations that actually grow me and HE removes blind spots where fear was leading me.

HIS power is unstoppable and I have to ride HIS raging river to the quiet place HE has for me. I put my trust in GOD. HIS plan is always great for me!

  • Are you worried about your future?
  • Do you think GOD has forgotten you or is punishing you?
  • Will you stop thinking poorly about GOD’s love for you?
  • Will you take the opportunity to grow instead of remaining a child and allow GOD’s strength to shine in your life today?

Inside Out

Luke 7: 36 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

============

Garnished with a smile, I stepped into church. With worries as high as a mountain, I dare not smile and say “everything is fine” in front of the group. No one asked how I was doing, no one checked in the next week.

  • There were times when the hurt outweighed the wealth.
  • There were times when something inside just had to come out.
  • There were times when I wanted to cry out, but had not place to do it.

The woman had a reputation of doing sinful things. She may have even been wealthy as she held an expensive alabaster flask of fragrant oil to anoint JESUS’s head. She was so hurt that she used her tears and hair to wash HIS feet. The Pharisee on the other hand criticized her lifestyle.

  • GOD wants me to throw away my criticism.
  • GOD wants me to stop looking at what other people are doing and tell HIM about my sin.
  • GOD wants me to seek HIM when I am hurting.

The phonier the church, the more masks are worn by the attendees. Pharisees criticize people for their imperfections, BUT GOD sees through this. HE wants the sinner to be able to confess their sin without being damaged more. HE also does a wonderful thing by allowing me to come to HIM with any problem.

  • Are you hurting?
  • Is life up one day and down the next?
  • Can you seek GOD directly with your hurt, worries and problems today?

Partial Assistance

Mark 9: 19 He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” 20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth.

21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”

============

“Don’t worry, I have been practicing for over 20 years” the doctor said to me. “I understand, but I’m still nervous” was my reply as I was about to have four wisdom teeth ripped from my mouth.

  • Sometimes explanations don’t help me.
  • Sometimes examples don’t calm me down.
  • Sometimes knowing just isn’t enough for me.

The father came to JESUS probably knowing JESUS could heal his son. JESUS says something strange to the father. HE says “Believe” to the father. I like and understand the father’s response.

  • JESUS tells me to believe but sometimes I must as HIM to fill in on the areas I can’t believe.
  • JESUS tells me to expect things to happen but sometimes I need HIM to fill in my unbelief.
  • JESUS tells me to know that anything is possible with belief, but sometimes I need HIM to provide the extra part of the belief that will enable a miracle.

“I believe; help my unbelief” is a great statement. I do believe that GOD can do marvelous things, but the part of me that has been worn down by the world may not fully believe, so I need help with my belief. JESUS is willing and able to supply the missing part to my belief.

When life deals out yet another crushing blow, JESUS is there saying “I got this.” HE is there when no one else is.

  • Have you been dealt yet another piece of bad news?
  • Do you feel you don’t have the belief to continue on with GOD’s work?
  • Can you ask HIM for a dose of belief so HE can carry you through?

Missed Message

Matthew 17: 22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.

============

“We are going to leave you here while we do some business so you can play with the other children” my parents said to me. I was highly upset and began to cry. When I got older I had to go with them to do errands. “Will this ever end? I want to play with my friends” I thought to myself.

  • Sometimes I miss the initial message of good news.
  • Sometimes I think everything is crumbling when it actually is bright and cheery.
  • Sometimes the bad news is all I hear even when the good news is coupled with it.

JESUS was a miracle machine! HE was healing people left and right. Mobs gathered to wait for HIM to hear HIM speak. They just knew HE would someday be a king, but in an earthly sense. When they heard the news of HIS impending death they were “filled with grief.” BUT GOD had a much better plan.

  • GOD’s plans for me are always better than I could ever imagine.
  • GOD’s plans for me are higher than I could ever think of.
  • GOD’s plans for me are to prosper me in HIS way and in HIS time.

JESUS had to be blamed and murdered in order to fulfill all prophecy spoken about HIM. HE remained sinless to be worthy enough to open the scroll of judgment on the earth. By HIS death and resurrection humanity could be saved. This is far better than a temporary king who would die off in a few years.

GOD wants me to hear HIS wonderful message even when bad news comes. HIS message to me is “I love you.”

  • Have you recently received bad news?
  • Do you replay bad news over and over in your head?
  • Can you stop thinking about the negative thoughts for a moment to listen to GOD’s message of grace and love for you?

Two People

Matthew 13: 24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

============

Every day I have a choice of which person I will be. Person one in this passage sowed “good” seed and person two sowed “bad” seed or weeds. Each seed grew in the story.

  • Some days I sow bad seed of fear, worry and doubt.
  • Some days I sow bad seed of lust, slander and rage.
  • Some days I sow bad seed of self-centeredness, self-promotion and self-righteousness.

There are many reasons I sow these seeds, none of which are good. BUT GOD wants me to prepare myself for something different.

  • GOD wants me to prepare myself daily to sow “good” seeds.
  • GOD wants me to seize every opportunity to plant something “good.”
  • GOD wants me to seek out situations where I can say something “good.”

Complaints, slander and arguments weaken my “good” seed. In fact, every negative word I speak grows in weird ways I cannot imagine. GOD wants me to speak the “Good” seed about HIS SON especially when I feel like spreading bad seed.

  • Which person will you be today?
  • Will you choose to sow GOD’s “good” seeds or your own seeds which could contain weeds?
  • Can you identify negative words and positive words that come from your mouth?

Worry

Matthew 6: 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

-------

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

============

“Oh no, my life is ruined!” I thought to myself. I started calculating what would happen to my life now that I failed the class. “If  I don’t graduate in this particular major, then I won’t get good paying job, then I will be stuck being a janitor the rest of my life!” was my dramatic line of thinking.

  • When I worry I think the worst will happen.
  • When I worry I think of all kinds of bad things that could happen.
  • When I worry I take it a step further and turn it into panic and start reacting to those who are worried around me.

Worry is an evil incessant foe. It rears its ugly head to distract, not only me, but many around me. It invites its friends “panic” and “fear” to join in on the party and soon I found myself blaming GOD for all my ills. “If YOU would have just given me the answers to the test, then I would not be in this mess!” was my immature thought after not studying.

  • GOD says to me “You are more valuable than all the animals I feed daily.”
  • GOD says to me “Seek MY kingdom first on a daily basis and MY righteousness and I will feed and clothe you.”
  • GOD says to me “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”

Tomorrow is GOD’s domain and I have not right to be in it at all. GOD wants me to stay in “today” where have an opportunity to praise HIM, serve HIM and be guided by HIM. A sigh of relief comes out of my mouth as I do not have to think about “tomorrow” for today I seek GOD.

  • Are you worried?
  • Do you think your worry can change things?
  • Can you stop worrying for a few moments and praise GOD so HE can help you think straight?

Mindful Trust

Isaiah 26:You will keep in perfect peace
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
    for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.

============

Seized with fear I stared at the wheel one more time. I puffed out three quick breaths, pushed off with my left foot and found myself gliding down the sidewalk on my bike. I rode past three or four houses without falling this time and when I fell, I got up excited. The next time I got on I was at peace and I could ride even further.

  • Sometimes fear takes away my peace.
  • Sometimes worry makes me doubt.
  • Sometimes anguish makes me think I cannot overcome “this” circumstance.

I am so happy that I learned how to ride a bike but it took pain to do it. I flipped over the handlebars on a few occasions and came into the house with a bloody lip on others. I had to go through the pain in order to have peace.

  • GOD takes me through storms, so I need to have trust in HIS plan.
  • GOD takes me though painful situations and heals me from my bumps and bruises.
  • GOD takes me through difficult circumstances, providing peace along the way.

Just like riding a bike, having peace takes practice. Instead of getting worried about the situation I had to learn how to have peace in the middle of the storm. I started small by not worrying about misplacing my security shirt I fashioned into my carry around buddy; to not worrying about the fact that someone broke into my car to now worrying about larger life events.

GOD grows my peace the more I trust HIM instead of the thing I worry about. HE may have a good reason for allowing whatever to be removed or destroyed. HE helps me grow and gives me peace. I trust in HIS plan.

  • Are you worried?
  • Are you nervous?
  • Can you take three deep breaths and decide to follow GOD?
  • Will you put your trust in HIS plan for you today?

Spend Time Wisely

Psalm 135: 13 Your name, Lord, endures forever,
    your renown, Lord, through all generations.
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and have compassion on his servants.

============

Pressure seemed to grow the higher I climbed. Deadlines, meetings and conference calls filled my mind. I had to document all of them and review them at night. There was little to no time to think of people outside of the projects I worked on.

  • There is a finite amount of time I am on this planet so I should praise the LORD.
  • There is a finite amount of time I am on this planet so I should spend some of it with GOD.
  • There is a finite amount of time I am on this planet so I should think of serving HIS people.

This chapter talks about how great and marvelous GOD is, but then it took a dark turn and talked about GOD destroying once mighty Egypt. Barbaric towards slaves, Egypt reigned with a mighty hand. Tierney caused GOD’s people to cry out. GOD heard.

  • GOD hears me when I cry out.
  • GOD hears me when I am in need.
  • GOD hears me when I seek to serve HIM and HIS people.

Turning to GOD should be a daily thing rather than an afterthought upon attending church once a week. GOD wants me to seek the lost because time is running out. HIS name endures forever, not mine. My finite time should be spent as if tomorrow were the last.

  • Are you spending an enormous amount of time mad, sad or worried?
  • Can you quiet down for a moment and ponder GOD’s greatness?
  • Will you stop spinning your troubles in your mind for a minute and notice GOD around you, even if it is for a second?

Getting out of the Trap

Psalm 129:“They have greatly oppressed me from my youth,”
    let Israel say;
“they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
    but they have not gained the victory over me.
Plowmen have plowed my back
    and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous;
    he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.”

============

“Will I ever get out of here?” I sat and thought. Bullies on the left and poverty on the right, was a thought I had in eighth grade. “Will I ever get out of here?” I sat and thought. This time, difficult teachers and no help or direction prompted my thinking in high school. “Will I ever get out of here?” I sat and thought. This time I had a very boring job in a town I despised and I had no contacts.

  • There are some places in life that seemed like I would remain forever.
  • There are some places in life that seemed like I would never leave.
  • There are some places in life that seemed as if I was stuck with no way out.

Looking forward during those difficult times, the road seemed endless. I mean who can do four whole years of high school, my young mind could not conceive. Looking back at that trial is only laughable compared to the trials of an adult. GOD had a plan for me.

  • GOD is always there for me when I question the road HE has me on.
  • GOD is always there for me when the road seems bleak and I have nothing inside of “me” to resolve the current situation.
  • GOD is always there for me when things seem impossible to me.

When I look at my power and assess my skills I quickly get nervous. I compare what I know with what’s ahead of me and immediately feel like giving up, BUT GOD has shown to be ever faithful. HE says “When you are weakest, MY strength is made perfect.” GOD is my salvation, whom shall I fear?

  • Are you nervous?
  • Are you feeling frightened by your surroundings?
  • Can you be still for a moment today and listen to GOD?
  • Will you accept the peace HE has for you this day?

Praising Takes Practice

Psalm 100:Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

============

News about the impending doom couldn’t have come at the worst time. With a second child, it was already difficult enough to make ends meet and for the first time, this particular company was going to do severe cuts in order to keep the stock market happy. When I got to work everyone, including myself was worried. One person said “Praise GOD” and another said “Trust in the LORD.” How in the world can they say that when the world is on fire?!

  • Sometimes I am worried to the point where I cannot see GOD.
  • Sometimes I am worried to the point where I cannot hear GOD.
  • Sometimes I am worried to the point where I cannot speak GOD.

With my world crashing around me I felt helpless and alone, even though there were plenty of others going through the same thing. How in the world could this person say “Praise GOD” at a time like this? They don’t understand “my” situation, or do they?

  • Praising GOD in the face of adversity makes me stronger each day.
  • Praising GOD in the middle of the storm gives HIM the strength and takes the load off of me.
  • Praising GOD in the brunt of the trial enables me to see, hear and speak about GOD.

What I’ve noticed is GOD says “Take heart for I am with you” quite often. HE says “Do not be afraid” more and more to me because there will be scary times in life where it seems like nothing will go “right.” Praising GOD isn’t an appeal to worship the egotistical figurehead that I sometimes think HE is. Praising GOD is actually a spiritual weapon that helps me fight against worry, doubt and fear.

Without praise, I fall into a trap of disbelief. Everyone around me becomes a problem rather than a solution. GOD wants me to carry the spirit of gratitude and to speak about HIS ways to everyone. HE wants me to douse lying spirits and praise HIS holy name.

  • Are you worried?
  • Do you feel even those who usually pray for you, are against you?
  • Do the words “Trust in the LORD” turn your stomach because “these words” seem empty?
  • Can you stop and turn to GOD and hear that HE does love you in spite of what you are going through?
  • Will you take a moment, even if it is a tiny moment, to praise GOD today?

Precious Time

Psalm 90: 11 If only we knew the power of your anger!
    Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.
12 Teach us to number our days,
    that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

============

“Take care of my buddy” were the words spoken of the spouse of a dying friend. Soon after I heard these words from one of GOD’s servants, “Live your life as if you only had two weeks to live” were the words I remember. I wondered how I should act if I only had two weeks left.

  • If I knew I were going to stand before GOD two weeks from now I would tell everyone I met about the grace GOD has given me through JESUS.
  • If I knew I were going to stand before GOD two weeks from now I would reconcile with people as best as “I” could and not worry that I met their reconciliation standards.
  • If I knew I were going to stand before GOD two weeks from now I would remember what HE has done for me and prepare myself for eternal praise.

It’s amazing how much time I spend on “me.” I mean I pray about me, worry about me and scream at GOD about me. It seems so fruitless. BUT GOD has given me yet another chance.

  • GOD says to me “I care about your day to day activities.”
  • GOD says to me “I made you for a special purpose that only you can fulfill so spend your days wisely.”
  • GOD says to me “I stand at the door and knock, if anyone will open the door, I will come in and sup with them.”

GOD wants me. The problem is sometimes, okay most times, I don’t want HIM. I take HIS love for “granted” and I think about me and the next situation. Fortunately GOD knew this and HE loves when I take a moment to turn around and thank HIM. HE even told a parable about ten blind people being healed and only one came back to thank HIM.

My days are numbered, contrary to what fitness and health advocates think. GOD knows exactly the day and hour of the end of my life. HE wants me to act as if it were tomorrow or two weeks from now. Money, time and arguments are not cares when I live life to its fullest and include GOD first.

  • Are you so focused on you that you are not living for GOD?
  • What is your last story of victory with GOD’s help?
  • Can you get up off the ground and stop spitting out poison and speak of GOD’s wonderful blessings?
  • Will you change your words of death into words of life?

Taking Time to Ponder

Job 25:“Dominion and awe belong to God;
    he establishes order in the heights of heaven.
Can his forces be numbered?
    On whom does his light not rise?

============

Sitting on my couch “worried” I wondered if I passed my final exam. Sitting in my apartment “worried” I wondered if I got the job. Sitting in my apartment “worried” I wondered if I got another job to move back. Sitting in my house “worried” I wondered if I could ever please this boss or the next one or those to follow.  Wow, I spent a lot of time worrying!

  • Worrying takes me away from peace.
  • Worrying distracts me so much that I cannot see blessings.
  • Worrying puts me in a ball and I cannot move forward on anything.

It’s quite amazing how distracting worry is. I mean when I try to stop worrying. I worry that I’m worrying too much! What should I do?

  • GOD said “Do not worry, do not be afraid.”
  • GOD said “I will be with you always.”
  • GOD said “Tell them I AM.”

I had to quiet my mind from all the worry and look at who GOD is. As I stared out the window I saw a deer slowly tromp into my yard, then another, then another. Soon several deer were standing there; one began kicking up the snow and sat down. I kept looking and seven or eight were sitting. I was amazed at the sight. Then I realized, if I could just slow down and look I could see GOD every day.

Slowing down helps me see and hear GOD. HE shows HIMSELF to me daily.

  • Are you looking for GOD?
  • Do you think HE is far away from you right now?
  • Can you look around and see HIM where you are right now?
  • Can you ponder the intricacies of how HE made you and your surroundings and the heavens above?
  • Won’t you add “awe” back into your relationship with GOD?

Use Protection

Job 5: 24 You will know that your tent is secure;
    you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.

============

“Another sunny day” I thought to myself. I smiled and went to the garage and to my dismay I realized that I had left the garage door open all night. I looked around to see if anything was missing and again to my dismay noticed some of my tools had been stolen. This was the first week of moving into this new home. Why did this happen?

  • There are times where I think I am responsible for the protection of my home.
  • There are times where I fall short of protecting “my stuff.”
  • There are times where thieves will get “my stuff” and I feel victimized.

I was definitely mad, but my anger subsided when I realized that the door leading to the house was wide open as well. No one in my household was hurt and all of the “stuff” was safe. I then realized that the toolbox that they took only contained a few older tools. My eyes were opened to checking the house each night. But wouldn’t you know I still have left the doors open several times afterward.

  • GOD has protected me on so many occasions I cannot count them.
  • GOD has watched over “my stuff” and allowed me to remain safe.
  • GOD has prevented calamity on so many levels in my life that I can do nothing but praise HIM.

When I look back and see the times I could have been in an accident or the times where I could have been hurt I can do nothing but praise GOD. HE has protected me from being foolish and HE has watched over me when people tried to harm me. I praise GOD for where HE has me.

  • Are you afraid?
  • Are you trying to hold onto your stuff?
  • Can you let go of your stuff and let GOD watch it?
  • Will you take a moment and drop your worries and praise GOD for a change?
