Unfiltered Worship

Unfiltered Worship

Revelation 4:The four living creatures sing songs of glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever. When they do so, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before the one who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever. They throw their crowns down in front of the throne and say,

11 “Our Lord and God! You are worthy
    to receive glory, honor, and power.
For you created all things,
    and by your will they were given existence and life.”

============

“Who are those people gathered in the field?” I asked one of the leaders on the missions trip. “They are people who worship GOD” was the response. They were all wearing white and did not have a building, seats or instruments. Later, we sat in a church. Many people, who had nothing, gathered to sing praise songs. They sang for hours!

  • I looked at my watch to see when they would be done.
  • I enjoyed the singing, but wanted it to be done so we could get on with it!
  • I realized, after a while, that I was not really worshipping from my heart, but out of habit.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, hears wonderful songs about JESUS. These songs contained glory, honor and thanks for HIM causing the people who were very important to throw their crowns at HIS feet. They rejoiced and praised HIM for HIS power!

My Observations:

  • JESUS Is worthy to be praised!
  • Sometimes I want to hold back because I want to appear a certain way before humans.
  • One day my worship will not be filtered with sin, problems or troubles!

Unfiltered worship can only take place in heaven. I mean, when all sin, worries and human structures are torn down, we can celebrate what JESUS has done! All problems will be solved and celebration will happen on a grand scale that lasts forever.

Will people get tired of praising JESUS? No! Our sinful minds cannot fathom true worship that lasts forever. We look at our watches and think of boredom if worship lasts longer than three songs. One day my worship for GOD will come out of sheer elation! I will not be embarrassed but filled with joy!

Challenge

  • How does the writer describe worship?
  • Have you ever got so excited about something that you just wanted to shout with joy?
  • Will you look beyond problems and praise GOD for what HE has done and is doing and will do in your life?

Celebration

Celebration

Philippians 3:  In conclusion, my friends, be joyful in your union with the Lord. I don't mind repeating what I have written before, and you will be safer if I do so. Watch out for those who do evil things, those dogs, those who insist on cutting the body. It is we, not they, who have received the true circumcision, for we worship God by means of his Spirit and rejoice in our life in union with Christ Jesus. We do not put any trust in external ceremonies.

============

Preparing for the celebration was hard work. Lists were made, lots of things were prioritized and budgets were blown. Large groups of people were involved in this frenzied experience. Lost sleep, meetings and stress ensued. “It’s tradition” someone said, trying to make sense out of the madness.

  • We had placed high value on ceremonies.
  • We placed a lot of trust in the tradition.
  • We made sure the photo opportunities looked like everyone was enjoying themselves.

Paul repeats himself by saying “Be joyful in your union with the LORD.” He then warns everyone about trusting in “external ceremonies” versus simply trusting in the union with CHRIST JESUS. He knew that looking holy did not make a person holy.

My Observations

  • My external actions may look good to people, BUT GOD rates my righteousness as filthy.
  • GOD saw my sinful actions and saved me anyway.
  • Only my union with CHRIST JESUS can save me.

Celebrating special days or people may have its value, but can sometimes be prioritized over the One who deserves celebration, namely JESUS. I mean, it is alright to recognize leaders or to be circumcised or to celebrate accomplishments, but placing trust in these ceremonies could make us think that we holier than we are.

Being “joyful” in union with the LORD can happen every day. No special day or moment is needed. GOD made it possible for me to celebrate the LORD each and every day. Traditions are nice, but I am glad I can recognize CHRIST without the need for anyone to see it.

Challenge

  • Who is the writer warning everyone about?
  • What is the “true circumcision?”
  • Will you celebrate your relationship with CHRIST as often as you can without the need for a special day or person triggering an event?

Make Up Our Own Minds

Make Up Our Own Minds

Romans 14: Some people think that a certain day is more important than other days, while others think that all days are the same. We each should firmly make up our own minds. Those who think highly of a certain day do so in honor of the Lord; those who will eat anything do so in honor of the Lord, because they give thanks to God for the food. Those who refuse to eat certain things do so in honor of the Lord, and they give thanks to God.

============

“No! It must be this way” one person said to me. Another said “It must be that way”, passionately. I was quite torn over the argument at the time. A group of people had very good arguments for how to dress when attending church.

  • There were times when I thought “my” way of worshipping GOD was the only way.
  • There were times when I thought the music I liked was the only music pleasing to GOD.
  • There were times when I thought the decorations, lighting and chairs arranged a certain way were the only way to truly worship GOD.

Paul tries to warn people to stay away from petty arguments by dealing with a difficult subject, namely honoring GOD. Some people dedicate a certain day to honor GOD and some think all days should honor GOD. Both are right if they do so to give thanks to the LORD.

  • GOD wants me to have an individual relationship with HIM.
  • GOD wants me to honor HIM by the things I eat and do.
  • GOD wants me to give thanks to HIM by believing in JESUS.

Honoring GOD is a personal thing. I mean, I like to get up early, pray, exercise, grab a cup of coffee and read. Others like to finish their day singing to the LORD. Any praise that includes thanks for JESUS dying for our sins and being raised from the dead is acceptable to the FATHER. I am glad HE give me a personal relationship with HIM.

  • Do you think the way your group worships is better than another group?
  • Do you judge the way someone sings, dances, or speaks for the LORD?
  • Can you learn to appreciate how others are giving thanks to JESUS so you can broaden your community?

Fast Recognition

Matthew 6: 16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

============

As we were talking about going over someone’s house I think I said, “What time are we leaving? I have to know because I’m fasting.” When we left I think I said “Which way is it to their house? I have to know because I’m fasting. Did I tell you I’m fasting?”

  • Sometimes I want to be recognized for my “righteous” acts.
  • Sometimes I want to be recognized for my “goody-goody” appearance.
  • Sometimes I want to be recognized for my “spiritual” efforts.

“You’re fasting?” was the response I was looking for and I received over and over that day. When I read this verse I realized I could have eaten that day because I was not fasting for GOD.

  • When I fast GOD wants me to keep my normal face on in order to not draw attention to myself.
  • When I fast GOD wants me to not let others know so the fast can be between me and HIM.
  • When I fast GOD wants me to understand that I do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from HIM.

I noticed some important words that GOD says in this passage, “When you fast.” This means GOD expects a fast. These words come right after HE said “When you pray” because HE expects that too.

I have heard others try to explain to me that fasting was only for a group of people at a special time, blah, blah. BUT GOD says to me “I will reward your fasting efforts done in secret.” GOD opens my eyes when I fast and lets me know that survival is not only dependent on physical food but spiritual as well.

  • Are you afraid to fast?
  • Have you been told to fast by a doctor?
  • Why can’t you fast for the LORD?
  • Will you take time out this month and fast for GOD without telling others?

Garments of the Soul

Zechariah 3: Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.”

Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.”

============

Greeted with smiling faces I proceeded into the church. Songs played, people clapped but I felt rotten inside. The preacher preached on a bunch of stuff I was doing wrong then we all got up sang again and walked out the door with the same smiling faces.

  • There have been times when my outside did not match my inside.
  • There have been times when smiling faces was not enough to crack open my tough exterior.
  • There have been times when my sin was hidden and I wore filthy clothes on my soul.

After reading this passage I could easily think that I would have to clean myself up in order to be loved by GOD. The problem with that kind of thinking is I can never “clean” myself up. The more I try the filthier my soul garments get. I drop off an obvious sin to society and trade it in for a larger sin to GOD, namely piety. What am I to do?

  • GOD says to me “In the middle of your sin, I saved you.”
  • GOD says to me “I saw you before the foundations of the world.”
  • GOD says to me “I have taken away your sin.”

I had to reread the passage a few times in order to see the timing. GOD says “Take off his filthy clothes”. Then I noticed HE says “See, I have taken away your sin” meaning HE died in my place and the act of cleansing was complete. All I have to do is believe in the ONE who cleansed me and then my filthy garments will be taken off for me.

Cleansing is not my job. I cannot clean myself up by trading sin. I need GOD in my life through JESUS who died and was raised from the dead. Now I can cry in church and smile. I can bring in my anger and leave with joy. My filthy garments of the soul can be replaced with GOD’s garments!

  • Are you hiding something?
  • Does the thing you are hiding eat away at you?
  • Are you lying to yourself in order to feel more comfortable?
  • Can you stop hiding your sins and allow GOD to take off your filthy soul garments by confessing to HIM?

Hidden Sin

Ezekiel 9: He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’ 10 So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.”

============

Being a thief, peeping Tom, a liar and a greedy vengeful person was never something I wanted to admit to anyone. In fact these sins were things I was supposed to carry to my grave without anyone knowing just how rotten I was. I was supposed to put on my “church face” and shine my halo daily, meanwhile letting the decay inside grow larger and larger.

  • When I try to hide my sin it only multiplies.
  • When I try to bury my sin it only comes to the surface.
  • When I try to pretend everything is well with my soul, weird spiritual dilemmas pop up.

GOD was furious with those who had reached a point where they admitted nothing and blamed everyone else around them. HIS chosen people left HIS protection and turned to asking wooden idols questions, knowing there would never be someone to say “Your action is wrong.” Sin was now available without restraint and now what used to be hidden was now blatant. GOD wants something different from me.

  • GOD wants me to admit publicly that I have sinned.
  • GOD wants me to tell people about HIS grace and mercy because I admitted my sins.
  • GOD wants me to believe in HIS grace through HIS SON, knowing that ALL my sins have been forgiven.

I can never be good enough or stop sinning long enough to win GOD over. So what’s the point in being good? GOD loves it when I turn away from that sin or when I help others focus on HIM. HE provides me with opportunities to bear fruit on a daily basis, all I have to do is reach out and accept HIS calling to admit what I have done so others will do the same.

Admitting sin takes the spotlight off of me and places it on GOD. HE blesses me for pointing people to HIM.

  • What are you hiding?
  • Are you hiding a lot?
  • Can you stop hiding and start admitting something small and work your way up to what you feel is large?
  • Will you reach the point where you know that all sin is the same?
  • Can you accept the gift that JESUS gave you by dying for your sins and taking on your consequences?

Anyone is Welcome

Isaiah 56: For this is what the Lord says:
“To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,
    who choose what pleases me
    and hold fast to my covenant—
to them I will give within my temple and its walls
    a memorial and a name
    better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
    that will endure forever.

============

Holes in my pants kept me from being best dressed, although I confidently wore them in college and fit in. When I arrived at a church with holey pants I did not fit in again. What was going on?

  • There were times that I did not feel like I fit into “church.”
  • There were some protocols of “church” I disagreed with.
  • There were behaviors of “church” I did not feel comfortable with.

My suit was too small because I had not bought one nor had one bought for me since high school. I was appalled at the sneers at my clothing. Someone offered to buy me some clothes and that set me on a path that I stand on to this day. Anyone should be welcome, regardless of appearance.

  • GOD says to me “Welcome everyone, no matter how different they appear to me.”
  • GOD says to me “Love everyone I send to you.”
  • GOD says to me “Go where I send you and give them MY word so I may bless them.”

Since then, I noticed people as being people. What clothes or skin they wear does not matter. GOD wants “all” humans to come back to HIM. HE wants me to be open to serving everyone, not just those who I feel comfortable with.

  • Look around, are you serving people who are different than you?
  • Have you been sent to a different group of people than yourself?
  • Have you welcomed a person who dresses different into your circle?
  • Can you allow GOD to send people to you who have differences but love HIM?

Worshiping Something Else

2 Kings 17: 35 When the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: “Do not worship any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them. 36 But the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm, is the one you must worship. To him you shall bow down and to him offer sacrifices.

37 You must always be careful to keep the decrees and regulations, the laws and commands he wrote for you. Do not worship other gods. 38 Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods. 39 Rather, worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.”

============

Times were getting tough and I wasn’t hearing from GOD so I opened a fortune cookie and lottery numbers appeared. I wonder if I should play the lottery popped in my mind. Another time things were getting tough and I wasn’t hearing from GOD so I read my horoscope, hoping for some encouraging words.

Yet another time things were getting tough and I wasn’t hearing from GOD so I spent about an hour looking for a four leaf clover so I could have ”good luck.”

  • When I want my way I will seek other gods for direction.
  • When I want my way I will seek other gods for advice.
  • When I want my way I will seek other gods for fulfilling my dreams.

My lack of trust sent me looking for answers in the wrong places. I wanted instant information rather than listening to GOD on a daily basis. When things started to go wrong, I would immediately go to the next thing to satisfy my craving for immediate information. BUT GOD wants something different.

  • GOD says to me “Do not worship any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them.”
  • GOD says to me “I am brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm, and I am the one you must worship.”
  • GOD says to me “Be careful to keep the decrees and regulations, the laws and commands written for you. Do not worship other gods.
  • GOD says to me “Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods.
  • GOD says to me “Worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.”

So I started worshipping GOD and more things started to go wrong! Wait a minute! What happened? GOD then opened my eyes and showed me I had a long way to go in order to fully trust HIM so I stayed on the road. I am so glad I now put my trust in HIM because my hope is much stronger.

  • Are you seeking symbols, trinkets and bobbles to bring you luck?
  • Do you believe you will be “lucky” and get rich one day?
  • Are you doing anything for the god of money even being sad when it doesn’t allow you to have some?
  • Can you stop bowing down to various gods and stand firm for the one true GOD?

Don’t mistake prosperity for GOD’s blessing

Judges 18: 30 There the Danites set up for themselves the idol, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the captivity of the land.31 They continued to use the idol Micah had made, all the time the house of God was in Shiloh.

============

Dressed in my new suit, I ventured into a huge church.  This place seemed to have everything!  When I sat on one of the lavish pews I noticed several women sitting near me. I noticed this the next week and the next. Finally a couple of them introduced themselves but similar to that of being in a club.

The preacher drove a lavish car and the sermons were about how to live in prosperity. Meanwhile, I noticed the deacons sneaking peeks at the women and winking at me as if to say, “You didn’t see that.” The crowd was huge and since this was one of my first efforts to go back to church I said to myself, “This place is better than the clubs!”
  • Sometimes I can be fooled by fake prosperity.
  • Sometimes I can be fooled into thinking immense wealth will bring me closer to GOD.
  • Sometimes I can be fooled into seeking a place where I won’t be corrected so I can do what I want and blame it on GOD.

The Danites stole an idol and attacked peaceful people out of ignorance of what GOD desired for them. They worshipped the idol and broke one of the major commandments of GOD. I can relate to this because I was ignorant to what GOD wanted for me and when I got to the church where the preaching tickled my ears, I felt great!
  • GOD told me HIS word is like a two edge sword, it cuts the preacher and the receiver.
  • GOD told me HIS word applies to every human so I should look at my flaws before I make statements.
  • GOD told me HIS word is above any thought I could dream up so it’s best that I follow HIS ways.

Prosperity comes and goes, BUT GOD is here forever.  When HE said “I will never leave you nor forsake you” HE also meant HE would hang around and correct those who believe in HIM. The country I live in emphasizes two things way too much, money and sex.

It blinds us to our many other flaws like prejudice, hatred, slander, corruption and divisiveness to name a few. GOD made it easy, “love one another as I have loved you.” This simple command is easy to remember and breaks down any pitiful cause focused on one single sin.
  • Are you in a building calling itself a church that is not following GOD?
  • Do you feel GOD wanting you to grow?
  • Are you studying and learning about HIM?
  • Can you add “loving others” to your plan today?
