Ark of Salvation for Moses

Ark of Salvation for Moses

Exodus 2: And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.

============

Moses begins his autobiography with the words given to him by GOD. He starts of with the tribe he is from. He then talks about his salvation:

My Observations:

  • Moses was from the Tribe of Levi, which would later become the Levitical Priests.
  • Amram is Moses’ father and Jochebed is his mother who made an ark to save Moses from being killed.
  • Miriam is Moses’ sister who watched over him to make sure he was safe.

GOD made an ark to save Noah and his family. HE wanted to save the world by saving one family. GOD did the same for Moses. An ark was built by his mother to save him from being found. She had no idea what would happen to him, but I am sure she prayed to GOD about this.

The midwives were followers of GOD and so was his mother. They would not obey Pharaoh’s order to kill all males because they feared the LORD. Jochebed was no exception. She feared the LORD and wanted to protect her son. Miriam followed GOD as well. GOD placed two women in Moses life who would pray and watch over HIM.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD inspire Moses to write his autobiography, starting with his tribe and his ark ride?
  • Has there ever been a time in your life that you knew you were being watched over?
  • What is your ark of salvation that sustained you from trouble?

Because of Her

Because of Her

Genesis 12: 14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

17 But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

============

Nervously planning, Abram asked his wife, Sarai, to lie and say she was his sister. GOD had caused a famine in the land HE promised to Abram, forcing them to seek food in Egypt. But when they got there, the Egyptians did as Abram suspected. They took Sarai to Pharaoh’s house. He treated Abram well, probably trying to win her heart.

My Observations:

  • GOD protected Sarai from Abram’s broken plan.
  • GOD protected Sarai from the Egyptians.
  • GOD had a special plan for Sarai and wanted her preserved.

Pharaoh may have given Abram luxuries of the day because of Sarai. BUT GOD intervened. HE plagued Pharaoh and his house with extraordinary plagues that people could not say were coincidences. Maybe everyone who tried to bring Sarai to Pharaoh, fell deathly ill or perhaps the same plagues Moses would perform, happened to this Pharaoh. Whatever the case, GOD protected Sarai despite Abram’s broken plan.

GOD is multifaceted. While he was protecting Sarai, HE was starting to tear down a kingdom that enslaved people. Because of the plagues, Pharaoh sent Abram, Sarai and all their people and all their stuff away. This was a precursor to Moses.

Challenge

  • How do you think Moses felt when hearing about Abram and Sarai’s encounter with Pharaoh?
  • How has GOD protected you in the past?
  • Have you thought about GOD’s plan for you and how HE wants to make sure the plan goes as HE expects by protecting you?

Break in Tradition

Break in Tradition

Genesis 11: 24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah. 25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

============

Up to this point, the descendants of Shem had unique names. But Terah did something different and named one of his sons after his father Nahor. Terah may have been close to his father Nahor and possibly listened to the stories of Shem together with him.

Terah waited until he was older before having children. This was different from his ancestors who traditionally had kids in their thirties. Terah only had three kids, which was also another break in tradition.

My Observations:

  • Lifespans were getting shorter which may have been a cause for concern for Terah.
  • Terah was the father of Abram and may have taught him about the LORD.
  • Terah may have learned about the LORD from his father Nahor and from Shem.

It seemed like Terah was different than his ancestors. Family seemed to mean a lot to him, but tradition may not have been his thing. Terah seemed to be growing restless living in the same traditional place as we will see in upcoming scripture. He wanted to see the world.

But the world was possibly getting meaner and sicker. Violence, that GOD mentioned to Noah, was in the hearts of humans. Ailments may have been introduced possibly due to a lack of contact with GOD. Greed was possibly growing and the desire for pieces of the Garden of Eden were in high demand. Gold was a precious rock people sought after. GOD saw and protected the descendants of Shem.

Challenge

  • Why does it seem that Terah breaks tradition as GOD explains Shem’s descendants to Moses?
  • Has GOD ever made you restless, wanting to do something different, specifically for HIM?
  • Are you able to break traditions, yet keep your walk with the LORD solid?

Nations and People Groups 6 of 6

Nations and People Groups 6 of 6

Genesis 10:  21 And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder. 22 The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arphaxad begot Salah, and Salah begot Eber. 25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan. 30 And their dwelling place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east. 31 These were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.

32 These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

============

Shem was the youngest son of Noah. He seemed to be the one who watched Noah’s interactions with the LORD. When Canaan may have sent his father, Ham, into the tent of Noah in an act of defiance, it was Shem who came up with the idea that would preserve Noah. He and his older brother Japeth would walk into Noah’s tent backward and cover his nakedness.

My Observations:

  • Shem respected GOD and did not scoff at HIS ways.
  • Shem tried to mirror Noah by doing what pleased GOD.
  • Noah’s curse included a blessing for Shem’s family.

Following GOD became complex early on. Satan had a great plan to steal humans and to protect himself from GOD’s judgment. He made the first humans’ sin, causing all humans to have a sin nature. The “seed of Adam” would be passed down with a nature that opposed GOD. BUT GOD had a plan.

GOD chose people who fought against this natural inclination to sin. While not perfect, Shem’s family preserved their love of GOD by fighting their sin nature. GOD blessed this family to the point that eventually JESUS would come as a human through this lineage. Salvation was in this plan!

Challenge

  • Why does GOD go into detail about the family of Shem to Moses?
  • Have you ever wondered why GOD chooses imperfect people to do important things?
  • Knowing that GOD wants ALL humans to believe in HIS SON, are your words defiant or reliant in HIS eyes?

Dependable Promise

Dependable Promise

Genesis 9: Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

============

Turning over all control of the earth to humans required some assurance. GOD the creator, wiped out most living things. Only those who were on the ark survived. HE did this because the thoughts and actions of humans were guided by their sin nature which led to extreme violence. GOD devised a plan with one person, Noah.

His family was saved because he walked with the LORD. GOD, knowing the son’s hearts, gave a commandment to preserve life. No killing or eating humans. Then GOD gave assurance that HE would never wipe out humans with a flood.

My Observations:

  • When GOD makes a promise, HE is faithful and just to keep it.
  • GOD knew that humans would not choose HIM, yet HE promised to not wipe them out.
  • GOD showed mercy and grace towards humans, knowing HE was the one who had to save them from themselves.

Assurance that GOD would never flood the earth was given to every human, animal and bug. But it was more than assurance. It was disclosure that another plan was in action. GOD was not rolling over and allowing humans to be ruled by their sin nature.

HE allowed humanity to live with free will to choose HIM or not. HE gave humanity another chance and set an example of what amazing grace looked like. Even when GOD is hated, looked at as a problem versus a solution or shows HIMSELF faithful by providing and is turned away from by HIS creation; GOD still keeps HIS promise.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about this promise HE made to all living things?
  • Have you ever doubted GOD’s love for you?
  • Are you willing to let go of some of your doubt by focusing on the promises GOD made to you today?

Sudden and Thorough

Sudden and Thorough

Genesis 7: 17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died. 23 So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. 24 And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.

============

GOD told Noah HIS plan of salvation of mankind. Satan thought he had won by ruining human by tempting them to eat from the Tree id Knowledge. Every human was born with a sin nature and very few walked with GOD. The plan was to save humans from total destruction through eight people. Evil thoughts prevailed and, though GOD walked amongst HIS people, they may have blamed HIM for casting them out of the luxury of the Garden of Eden.

When GOD shut the door on the ark, it was too late. HE made it rain so fast and HE also broke apart the ground so forcefully that no living thing could even think about the ark. The rain fell in measures never seen before or since.

My Observations:

  • GOD was very patient with humanity, but once that patience ran out, judgement was executed.
  • GOD allowed people to do whatever they wanted to do, but that had a limited time.
  • GOD had a plan to save humanity from total antihalation and HE executed HIS plan as promised.

In modern days, monsoons happen in some regions. This devastating rain can cause floods and wash away manmade structures. Same with tsunamis. Water was used by GOD to break apart the earth and to destroy anything that was tainted by Satan’s pride. Violent collections of animals, and luxurious living was all washed away.

Nothing was left that humans could take credit for. The water flowed twenty-two feet above the highest mountain and lasted about half a year. GOD’s salvation is just as sudden, thorough and powerful. HE can and will save those who seek HIM.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD tell Moses about the lengths of time that it rained and that the water remained?
  • Are you in a season that feels like it is raining all the time?
  • Can you place your thinking on GOD’s wonderful plan HE has for you so HE can pour out HIS blessings on you?

Continental Divide

Continental Divide

Genesis 7: So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights.

============

On the second- and third-day GOD created water capable of rain and fountains capable of tearing apart the large land mass known as dry land or earth. GOD, in HIS week of creation, already knew what HE was going to do to save mankind from itself. All of life depended on something flimsy, dysfunctional and unattractive as an ark.

My Observations:

  • GOD used water to break up the earth and flood the land.
  • GOD knew HE would need to save humanity from the bad choices caused by Satan’s temptation.
  • GOD kept HIS promise of what HE said HE was going to do.

Every human, animal and bug would be drowned if they were not on the ark. GOD had completed HIS inspection of the ark and told Noah and his family to “come inside.” HE then left the ark and caused it to rain. HE broke up the land mass into the seven continents of today. The water that gently gave life to the plants was now destructive and a force that could not be overcome.

After Noah finished his ark, they all went inside. Not knowing what would really happen they got settled in. The miraculous movement and obedience of the animals gave the family some comfort that the thing Noah had been talking about for decades was really going to happen.  On a very specific day, the first raindrop fell.

Challenge

  • Why was GOD so specific to Moses about the date it started raining?
  • Have you ever been amazed at GOD keeping HIS promise to you?
  • Has GOD planned out salvation for you in ways that are different than what you thought?

Passed Inspection

Passed Inspection

Genesis 7: Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.” And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth.

============

Patience was given to Noah from GOD. It seems that GOD did not rush Noah in completing the ark, rather HE waited for him to complete the ark before giving him final instructions. The LORD must have entered the ark and saw that it was complete. “Come into the ark” let’s me know the LORD was inside.

My Observations:

  • GOD waited for Noah to complete the ark versus giving him a deadline.
  • GOD inspected the ark, not for HIS sake, but to let Noah know it was ready.
  • GOD gave Noah the final instructions which may have caused Noah to act differently.

Assurance was probably needed after expending this great amount of effort. Noah had probably become comfortable with the building process, but now it was time to execute GOD’s plan. Noah may have been nervous about his work, so the LORD calmed him down. Noah no longer had time to try to convince his siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and neighbors that GOD was about to wipe out everything.

“It’s going to work” was the implied feeling because GOD told Noah that prey and predators were supposed to be gathered together in the quantities HE commanded. GOD had changed the animals during the curse. HE then explained something that was strange. “I will cause it to rain.” It had never rained before. There was no need because plants grew themselves, even after the Garden of Eden. GOD was confident that the plan would work.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about this conversation with Noah?
  • Has GOD ever told you to do something and you did it, but was unsure that what HE told you to do would actually work?
  • Are you willing to trust in the LORD will all your heart and not lean on your own understanding today?

End of the Line

End of the Line

Genesis 5: 32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

============

Nine generations from Adam, Noah arrives on the scene. “And Noah” indicates to me, that this list is now complete and something else is about to happen. Thousands of years had passed and now the world was populated in two distinct ways, those who called to the LORD and those who did not. Satan thought he won by making all humans sin. But he did not know JESUS had a plan.

My Observations:

  • GOD preserved the lineage of CHRIST by walking with people, never leaving them alone.
  • Noah had three sons after he was five hundred years old.
  • GOD’s plan of redemption included Noah’s family.

Seeing the plan of redemption makes the list of people more understandable. GOD seemed to want us to know why HE cursed creation in the first place. Not that HE needed to explain things to us. HE revealed the pride of Satan, his lies and deceit and the affects they had on mankind.

GOD graciously used the best of the worst to save humans and provide eternal life. When I say “worst” I mean, there is no human without sin, not one. Even our best efforts have sin in them.  We were born with it. But some will “cry out to the LORD” asking for help with the sin nature caused by Satan. Noah is the beginning of that story.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD end the genealogy dictated to Moses with Noah?
  • Where are you with your walk with GOD?
  • Are you being distracted into fear causing you to overthink GOD’s love for you today?

Unamazed

Unamazed

Revelation 17: When I saw her, I was completely amazed. “Why are you amazed?” the angel asked me. “I will tell you the secret meaning of the woman and of the beast that carries her, the beast with seven heads and ten horns. That beast was once alive, but lives no longer; it is about to come up from the abyss and will go off to be destroyed. The people living on earth whose names have not been written before the creation of the world in the book of the living, will all be amazed as they look at the beast. It was once alive; now it no longer lives, but it will reappear.

============

Seeing the card trick performed in front of me, left me amazed. “How did you do that?” I asked. When I learned the secret, it didn’t seem so amazing, but I learned how to “amaze” other people.

  • I was fooled into being amazed.
  • I thought something amazing had happened, when it was only a trick.
  • I learned the trick and wanted to “amaze” people.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, saw the future which held a great city that was amazing. He also caught a glimpse of the beast who was from Satan. This being would act like JESUS and die and be raised from the dead. Everyone whose names have not been written before the creation of the world in the book of the living, will be fooled and amazed.

My Observations:

  • Satan will try to mimic GOD, even by having a being die and be raised from the dead.
  • GOD’s people have been saved, even before they were created.
  • People who believe in JESUS will not be fooled by a being who is raised from the dead, who curses GOD.

People are amazed easily. I mean, there are videos that show people throwing a ball through tiny holes from great distances. But when people find out the video is fake, they quickly become unamazed. Same with the beast. When the angel explained that he will “reappear” it was to explain that nothing can mimic the resurrection of JESUS.

The Savior was and is GOD who became a human to die for the sins of humanity. HE lived a sinless life and was blamed and murdered by HIS own creation. HE was raised from the dead, giving everlasting life to those who believe in HIM for salvation. I will not be fooled.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer was amazed at seeing a futuristic city?
  • Would you be amazed if someone were raised from the dead today?
  • Will you seek wisdom that comes from GOD to understand who JESUS is, to believe in  HIM for salvation and to be guided by the HOLY SPIRIT today?

Planned From the Beginning

Planned From the Beginning

Revelation 9: 13 Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet. I heard a voice coming from the four corners of the gold altar standing before God. 14 The voice said to the sixth angel, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great Euphrates River!” 15 The four angels were released; for this very hour of this very day of this very month and year they had been kept ready to kill a third of all the human race. 16 I was told the number of the mounted troops: it was two hundred million. 17 And in my vision I saw the horses and their riders: they had breastplates red as fire, blue as sapphire, and yellow as sulfur. The horses' heads were like lions' heads, and from their mouths came out fire, smoke, and sulfur. 18 A third of the human race was killed by those three plagues: the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur coming out of the horses' mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and also in their tails. Their tails are like snakes with heads, and they use them to hurt people.

============

Planning an event, I got engrossed in the details. Someone asked me “Do you have anyone scheduled to set up and tear down?” I had thought about setting everything up, but it did not dawn on me to think about tearing down the event.

  • I had to plan tear down before the event started.
  • I had to know the hour, day month and year I was going to tear down the event.
  • I had to assign specific resources to tear down the event.

John, the disciple JESUS loved, heard the sixth angel blow his trumpet. A voice, perhaps JESUS, told the sixth angel to release four angels that were ready to tear down Satan’s kingdom at a very specified hour, day, month and year. The four angels were released from where it all started, near the Garden of Eden’s river Euphrates.

My Observations:

  • GOD cursed humanity and the earth when Adam and Eve sinned.
  • JESUS volunteered to take on the death sentence that was meant for all of humanity.
  • JESUS lived a sinless life and is now the judge over Satan and has provided a revelation of what HE plans to do.

The end was planned from the beginning. I mean, GOD is not reacting to anything that is going on today. HE is not surprised to see the moral decay and emerging hatred. HE knew from the beginning how many people would choose HIM as their Savior.

Unfortunately there will be some who will reject the love of CHRIST no matter how much love is shown to him or her. JESUS showed immense love and the FATHER immense constraint. HE provides ample time for us to accept JESUS as the Savior. I hope for more to come to know HIM in a saving way.

Challenge

  • What exciting thing did the writer share?
  • What surprises do you see in this passage?
  • Do you see that GOD is very methodical and has a plan that cannot be stopped for you and me today?

Plan Put Into Action

Plan Put Into Action

Hebrews 1: In the past God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many ways through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us through his Son. He is the one through whom God created the universe, the one whom God has chosen to possess all things at the end. He reflects the brightness of God's glory and is the exact likeness of God's own being, sustaining the universe with his powerful word. After achieving forgiveness for the sins of all human beings, he sat down in heaven at the right side of God, the Supreme Power.

============

Wanting a merit badge, I sought out places to plant seeds. I cleared away overgrown weeds, removed trash and found areas of dirt that I could plant seeds. I planted tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. After all the hard work, I just needed to sit back and watch everything grow.

  • I finished the hard work and now I had to wait.
  • I still had work to do, but it was minimal.
  • I was excited when the fruit of my labor grew and I watched as the harvest got ready.

Paul is the assumed writer of this letter, though it varies from his usual style of mentioning his name. The letter goes right into the detail of JESUS being GOD and how HE achieved forgiveness for the sins of all human beings. After doing so, HE sat down.

My Observations

  • JESUS was chosen to possess all things at the end of time.
  • JESUS reflects the brightness of GOD’s glory that no darkness can remain.
  • JESUS achieved forgiveness that I could not grant myself.

Sitting and waiting for something to happen can be hard at times. I mean, when I have done the hard work, I want to do more for some reason. In the case of my garden, there were times when I wanted the plants to grow faster, so I overwatered them, causing them to die.

GOD planted the seed of belief and sent the right people to provide me with words of encouragement. HE also sent people to me to provide just what I needed, when I needed it. HE sits because HE has already done the hard work. HE knows the wonderful plan HE has for my life and cannot wait for the fruit to bear out of my life.  I am so grateful JESUS cared for me to do the hard work.

Challenge

  • How does the writer say GOD communicates with HIS people?
  • Have you ever wondered what your purpose in life is?
  • Will you consider that JESUS has already done the hard work for your life and is sitting down to watch you grow into HIS wonderful fruit HE planted in your heart?

Hidden Teaching

Hidden Teaching

1 Timothy 1: We know that the Law is good if it is used as it should be used. It must be remembered, of course, that laws are made, not for good people, but for lawbreakers and criminals, for the godless and sinful, for those who are not religious or spiritual, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the immoral, for sexual perverts, for kidnappers, for those who lie and give false testimony or who do anything else contrary to sound doctrine. 11 That teaching is found in the gospel that was entrusted to me to announce, the Good News from the glorious and blessed God.

============

Another wave of trials was hitting. People I knew were getting sick, bills mounted higher and higher and technology was failing. “What is going on!” I said to GOD. I thought maybe I wasn’t  being “good” enough, so I retraced my sinful steps so I could stop doing whatever I was doing.

  • I thought I could manipulate GOD into giving me what I wanted by following the Law.
  • I felt even worse when I could not keep the Law well.
  • I wondered if GOD was out to punish me for even the slightest mistake.

Paul gives Timothy a warning we can all heed. He tells everyone the difference of the Law versus the Gospel of JESUS. The Law tells us what we did wrong, while the Gospel of JESUS tells us we are forgiven.

My Observations

  • JESUS saved me from the consequence of sin.
  • JESUS saved me from the sins I do not know I commit.
  • JESUS saved me from eternal separation from HIS love so I can be with HIM forever.

It’s all about JESUS. I mean, when I think I can be “good” enough to change GOD’s mind and have HIM stop the trial, my fake righteousness smells like excrement to HIM. BUT GOD provided me with another way.

JESUS is the answer to all my situations. HE took care of all consequence of my sins, past, present and future. HE removed my sins as far as the east is from the west. HE delights in providing grace to me and showers me with peace and hope. I am glad the teaching of the Good News is no longer hidden, rather can be scattered to everyone HE sends me to.

Challenge

  • What is the purpose of the Law according to the writer?
  • Have you ever been in trouble and tried to be good for a short period of time?
  • Will you let go of your life and allow the HOLY SPIRIT to guide you so you will stop trying to “feel” forgiven and simply know you ARE forgiven today?

No Chance Taken

No Chance Taken

Colossians 1: 13 He rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us safe into the kingdom of his dear Son, 14 by whom we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven.

============

Wanting to get “my” way, I decided to “try” GOD. I had too many calamities going on and wanted some relief. I decided to act “good” so I took an inventory of what I thought was “bad.” I reduced my sin to no avail. More things were going wrong. “What do YOU want from me?” was my complaint.

  • I was trying to manipulate GOD by being good.
  • I thought I was in control of GOD.
  • I used flawed logic by thinking GOD reacts to what I do.

Paul continues to explain why we should be thankful for GOD. By belief in JESUS, the FATHER rescued us from the power of darkness, brought us safe into the kingdom of JESUS and set us free by forgiving us of all our sins. GOD did it all.

My Observations

  • When I think I have let GOD down by my sins, I must remember, HE forgave me of all my sins.
  • When I think I can manipulate GOD by being “good” I must remember JESUS is the only one who is “good.”
  • When I think GOD doesn’t love me or HE doesn’t care about this particular situation, I must remember, HE rescued me before I was even born.

We all want to be in control of our lives. I mean, I try hard to be “good” so things will go well with me. But what happens when I thought I was good and bad things happen anyway? I believe it means “bad things happen anyway and I am still supposed to believe that everything was taken care of for my salvation.

GOD did not leave it up to me to save me. HE knew I would not choose HIM, rather I would run after what the world thinks is right. HE made a way for me to be saved by giving us HIS one and only SON. I am glad I am forgiven for all my sins, even the sin of trying to manipulate GOD.

Challenge

  • What are the things the writer is pointing out that are worthy of praise?
  • Do you have to “feel” forgiven or know you are forgiven?
  • What does “safe into the kingdom” mean to you?
  • Will you know that GOD loves you dearly and has not taken a chance on losing you today?

Restored After the Stew

Restored After the Stew

Ephesians 3: For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles, pray to God. Surely you have heard that God in his grace has given me this work to do for your good. God revealed his secret plan and made it known to me. (I have written briefly about this, and if you will read what I have written, you can learn about my understanding of the secret of Christ.) In past times human beings were not told this secret, but God has revealed it now by the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets. The secret is that by means of the gospel the Gentiles have a part with the Jews in God's blessings; they are members of the same body and share in the promise that God made through Christ Jesus.

============

Standing on the sideline, I waited to be picked to be on one of the teams. I was not athletically inclined, so my draft pick was extremely low. I was finally chosen, but did not get a chance to play that time, but when I did, I actually got on base!

  • At one time I felt left out.
  • When I was chosen I still felt like I did not belong.
  • When I participated, I did not know I could actually contribute.

Paul goes to enormous lengths to explain the Gentiles have a part in GOD’s promise. For centuries, the Gentiles heard of the GOD of Abraham, Isaac and “Jacob”, (the swindler who tricked his brother Esau out of his birthright for some stew). While Esau was careless, he did not know he would be the father of a group of people who were left out of the Promise.

My Observations

  • GOD sees my mistakes and forgive me anyway.
  • GOD wants me to be part of HIS family, even though I do not deserve it.
  • GOD wants me to actively participate as much as those who are gifted.

Some people who follow JESUS can be intense or even a bit intimidating. I mean, he may give more or she may serve more or someone else may not sin as much. BUT GOD doesn’t look at the score when it comes to HIS Promise. HE wants all of HIS children back, period.

HE chose a group to spread HIS Gospel, and they held it to themselves. HE then allowed HIS SON to fulfil the Gospel and they killed HIM. HE raised JESUS from the dead and gave HIS promise to the descendants of Jacob and Esau. He restored the Gentiles without having them need to follow all the rules. I am glad JESUS was raised from the dead for me.

Challenge

  • Can you feel the passion of the writer over those who were at once left out?
  • Have you ever felt left out or less than another person?
  • Will you accept JESUS as your Savior and be a part of a family who HE care for and guides daily, in spite of flaws?

According to Plan

According to Plan

Ephesians 1: 11 All things are done according to God's plan and decision; and God chose us to be his own people in union with Christ because of his own purpose, based on what he had decided from the very beginning. 12 Let us, then, who were the first to hope in Christ, praise God's glory!

============

Not getting the job I really, really wanted felt bad at the time. But looking back, I am glad I did not get the position because I probably would not be writing this note today. In fact, as I review the disappointments in life, I can see how I was protected from myself.

  • I have been disappointed.
  • I have felt dejected.
  • I have had moments where I had lost hope.

Encouragement was the thing Paul felt the people needed. He had been through a lot and knew those who follow JESUS would face some difficulties. He let’s everyone know that GOD did the choosing, so we must praise HIM because we now have hope.

My Observations

  • GOD had a plan that included choosing me.
  • GOD made a way back to HIM when I chose JESUS.
  • I can praise GOD because my hope is in JESUS.

Things may not go according to my plan, but they will always go according to GOD’s plan. The things I feel are terrible and sometimes destructive, raise up people who believe strongly in JESUS. When CHRIST was born, the king at that time had all children killed off so he could remain in power.

Wars, famine and disease plague the planet, yet there are those who bow their knees to GOD, praising JESUS for their salvation. All these things are according to HIS plan which cannot fail. HE chose us and allowed HIS SON to be our Savior. I gladly praise HIM for HIS decision.

Challenge

  • What “things” is the writer speaking of?
  • Do you think that life should only have “good” moments because you believe in JESUS?
  • Will you be encouraged that HE loves you, especially through your trials, and has a wonderful plan for you today?

Healing Brokenness Plan

Healing Brokenness Plan

Ephesians 1: In all his wisdom and insight God did what he had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan he had already decided to complete by means of Christ. 10 This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.

============

Plans are wonderful to me! I love getting a plan from people who have been where I am trying to go. I can get the steps, follow them and celebrate when I make it to the destination.

  • Plans make it easier for me to keep going when things seem to be going wrong.
  • I feel more confident when I am following a plan.
  • Some of the steps of many plans did not make sense until the entire plan unfolded.

Paul talks about GOD’s “secret plan.” He explains that one part of the plan as been revealed to humanity, namely JESUS died for the sins of the world. What looked like a FATHER punishing HIS SON for being perfect turned out to be only part of the story. The true plan was to “bring all creation together”  with CHRIST as head.

My Observations

  • GOD saw my brokenness and decided to do something about it.
  • JESUS volunteered HIS life to heal me forever.
  • All of creation waits on the rest of GOD’s plan which includes placing everything under JESUS.

This plan is amazing! I mean, it shows unimaginable love for a creation who turns its back to the creator at a moment’s notice. GOD could not depend on our faith, so HE devised a plan to redeem broken, lost humans through JESUS. JESUS volunteered to lose everything and in the process, gained everything.

One part of the plan is still in motion. One day JESUS will return and everything that is broken will be healed under HIM. All questions about “Why did GOD do this in the first place?” will be answered. Until then, I gladly accept the incredible love HE has shown for me.

Challenge

  • Does the plan the writer speaks of, make you nervous or excited?
  • What part of your actions do you see in this plan?
  • If you are trying too hard to please GOD, will you accept that HIS plan includes your life and will not fail, because HE has already given everything to JESUS whom you believe in?

Unstoppable Plan

Unstoppable Plan

Acts 28: Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.” But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

============

When I saw the agenda, I was disappointed. My name was no longer on the list. I sat in the audience prepared to listen. I couldn’t help thinking, “Why I was bumped from the agenda?”

I noticed a couple of people, who were at odds with me, were suddenly on the agenda. “Oh well.” I thought. A person in the audience asked for me to be put back on the agenda. I did not have to fight.

  • There have been snakes of temptation in my life that have bit me.
  • There have been people in my life who were against me.
  • There have been situations in my life that seemed to go wrong but didn’t.

Paul and the crew were warmly welcomed by the islanders. Paul, unfortunately was bit by a venomous viper. The islanders saw this and thought he was a murderer who received justice. They believed in gods. Paul shook of the snake and stayed healthy. They were amazed, BUT GOD knew this would happen.

  • GOD knows the enemy wants to come against me.
  • GOD knows Satan wants to ruin HIS plan HE has for me.
  • GOD knows HIS plan for me cannot be stopped.

By simply living, I have a rival. I mean, just by being alive, the enemy wants me to fall to temptation, make mistakes with other humans, lie, cheat and steal, like him. BUT GOD’s plan of salvation is unstoppable for me.

There is nothing that can separate me from GOD. Even my own sin can no longer keep me from HIS love. HE said “It is finished” when HE was on the cross. This means nothing else has to happen. The plan is complete. I am grateful JESUS included me in HIS unstoppable plan.

  • Are people trying to stop you from mentioning JESUS?
  • Are strange barriers arising, seemingly out of nowhere?
  • Will you continue to live for GOD, knowing HIS plan for you is unstoppable?

Following the Rules

Jon 9: 13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.”

Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them.

============

“You cannot leave the table until you finish your food” was the rule imposed on me. The problem was, I hated most food at that stage in my life. “How do I get the food off of my plate without it going into my mouth?” was the question I pondered. The answer came to me. I was sitting on a chair with pillows. I lifted up the pillow and shoveled the food under it. Rule followed!

  • There were times when I interpreted the rule to my advantage.
  • There were times when I did not enjoy the rule so I figured out ways to get around it without breaking it.
  • There were times when I felt the rule held me hostage and I had no delight in the rule.

Blind from birth, a man was healed by JESUS. This awesome demonstration of power was met with contempt by the church leaders. Blindly, they overlooked the obvious facts that JESUS was and is GOD, by accusing HIM of doing work on the Sabbath. JESUS encroached on their lifestyle by showing compassion on their day off.

  • GOD wants me to look at HIS rules as a guide to bring people to CHRIST.
  • GOD wants me to use HIS rules as freedom rather than bondage for those HE wants me to bring to CHRIST.
  • GOD wants me to drop my insecurities, doubts and fears so I can have my spiritual eyes opened to follow HIS rules with love.

GOD did not make humans so HE could torture them with rules they could not follow. HE made humans, knowing they would sin. The rules were made as a map back to the right path, which is JESUS, the CHRIST. If I interpret the rule in a way to “get around it” then I will remain lost. I am grateful GOD’s word is a way back to HIM.

  • Are you lost?
  • Are you making GOD’s word fit “under” your education or human observations?
  • Will you place GOD’s word higher than what you learn so you can see HIS power and love daily?
