Blessings Passed Down

Blessings Passed Down

Genesis 25:This is the sum of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, 10 the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife. 11 And it came to pass, after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac dwelt at Beer Lahai Roi.

============

Abraham’s father, Terah, lived two hundred five years. His grandfather lived one hundred nineteen years. And his ancestor Seth lived five hundred years. Terah may have heard directly from Seth regarding the Garden of Eden and the flooding of the earth. Terah passed this information to Abraham who took it another step by believing everything GOD said. He passed this information on to Isaac.

My Observations:

  • Ismael must have gotten word that his father, Abraham, died.
  • Ismael worked with Isaac to bury their father.
  • Isaac grew up listening to Abraham and heard about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Hearing about the miracles of GOD seemed to place a fire in the heart of those who could receive it. This fire guided each person’s actions. GOD promised that Abraham would be the father of many nations and he lived his entire life as the chosen one.

Isaac would now accept the responsibility of being the chosen one to give birth to nations. But what about Ismael. He too was blessed with forming nations. GOD’s blessings cascaded down to generations to follow. Abraham was buried in the same cave as Sarah. The deed was passed to Isaac.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD mention Abraham’s age so descriptively to Moses?
  • Do you worry about age?
  • If you measure your accomplishments, will you stop so you can focus on GOD’s blessed calling for you right now?

More of the Promise

More of the Promise

Genesis 25: Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah. And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan begot Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines which Abraham had; and while he was still living he sent them eastward, away from Isaac his son, to the country of the east.

============

Abraham seemed to take GOD’s promise seriously. He married Keturah who bore him six sons. Prominent names came from this marriage, some of which would cause problems centuries later. Abraham also had children through concubines.

My Observations:

  • Abraham kept having children after Sarah died.
  • Abraham had a promised child named Isaac, but also fathered many nations outside of the one JESUS would come through.
  • There was possibly some strife going on in Abraham’s family so he sent those born of concubines away from Isaac.

GOD promised Abraham that he would have more children than he could ever count. This seemed to be true even when he was living! He had kids that would start nations Some would follow GOD and some would not.

While Abraham had fulfilled “the promise” GOD mentioned, he also remembered that he would be the father of many nations. Keturah may have been a Philistine. The Bible does not say where she came from, but that’s where Abraham settled. The concubines may have also been Philistines. The belief in GOD may have been mixed.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD tell Moses about Abraham’s other children?
  • After GOD fulfills a promise HE made to you, have you ever wondered what’s next?
  • Is your purpose in GOD still solid in your heart?

Prophecy Fulfilled. Comfort Provided.

Prophecy Fulfilled. Comfort Provided.

Genesis 24: 62 Now Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi, for he dwelt in the South. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted his eyes and looked, and there, the camels were coming. 64 Then Rebekah lifted her eyes, and when she saw Isaac she dismounted from her camel; 65 for she had said to the servant, “Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?”

The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took a veil and covered herself.

66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

============

Up to this point Isaac had not been mentioned much by himself. He was mentioned as the promised child in the context of Abraham. But this time Isaac is mentioned as an adult. He moved away from Abraham, but not far away. Abraham’s servant brought Rebekah to him while he was having his quiet time with the LORD. Rebekah asked “Who is this man?”

My Observations:

  • Rebekah was probably filled with excitement that she was chosen by GOD to be the mother of many nations.
  • Abraham’s servant was probably excited to tell the supernatural story to Isaac.
  • Isaac was comforted by Rebekah’s presence and was probably renewed from being saddened over his mother’s death.

Sarah may have told Isaac that he was the one who would fulfill GOD’s prophecy. Rebekah was told that she would fulfill GOD’s prophecy. Both had been told these things, but it wasn’t until they met that they may have said to themselves “This is really going to happen!”

Two people had their lives changed over a matter of a couple of weeks. Rebekah was not expecting to be married any time soon. Isaac knew he would be married, but was probably feeling a little down because he was not allowed to marry any of the women around him and did not know how he would fulfill the prophecy. GOD brought both of them love and comfort.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD turn to speaking about Isaac when describing things to Moses?
  • Have you ever been shocked when GOD comes through with a promise, HE made to you?
  • Do you believe that GOD is willing to guide you by the COMFORTER today?

Prayer of Prosperity and Protection

Prayer of Prosperity and Protection

Genesis 24: 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her:

“Our sister, may you become
The mother of thousands of ten thousands;
And may your descendants possess
The gates of those who hate them.”

61 Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and they rode on the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and departed.

============

Nervous and saddened to see Rebekah leave, Laban and his mother wished her farewell. Her departure plans came up quickly and they had no time to prepare. They offered up a prayer of prosperity and protection.

My Observations:

  • Laban and his mother placed Rebekah in GOD’s hands by saying a prayer over her.
  • Laban and his mother agreed with Abraham’s prophecy and prayed that she fulfills it.
  • Laban and his mother may have followed GOD all their lives, so they gave Rebekah their best, namely prayer.

Speaking prosperity and protection over someone is not a bad thing, but the enemy tries to mix in greed and lust for power into it, confusing followers of CHRIST. Laban and his mother simply agreed with the prophecy of Abraham as told by GOD. Rebekah would become the mother of many nations, just like Sarah.

I believe it was JESUS who told Abraham this prophecy and in it, HE promised blessings. But Laban and his mother knew the enemy would attack. They prayed for protection against those who hate people who follow CHRIST, not in a political way, but in a relationship way.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about this prayer?
  • Has GOD promised you something that has not come to fruition yet?
  • Instead of giving up, will you look at the situation differently, renewing your trust that GOD keeps HIS promises?

Prayer

Dear LORD, please bless this reader with the plan you have for him or her. Plans to “prosper” and not to harm. Plans to give a “Hope” and a “future.” Pleas protect this reader from themselves and those who a purposefully trying to cause harm. amen

No False Barriers

No False Barriers

Genesis 24: 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank and stayed all night. Then they arose in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my master.”

55 But her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman stay with us a few days, at least ten; after that she may go.”

56 And he said to them, “Do not hinder me, since the Lord has prospered my way; send me away so that I may go to my master.”

57 So they said, “We will call the young woman and ask her personally.” 58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?”

And she said, “I will go.”

============

Ready to go back to Abraham, the servant asked to leave with Rebekah. But the brother and her mother asked for Rebekah to stay for “at least” ten days. Abraham’s servant reminded them of the supernatural agreement. They asked Rebekah if she wanted to go. She agreed.

My Observations:

  • Laban and Rebekah’s mother may have gotten nervous overnight and wanted some time to talk to Rebekah to rationalize what was about to happen.
  • Abraham’s servant was convinced that the LORD had orchestrated the circumstance.
  • Rebekah spoke up and said she will go.

Everyone else seemed to have an opinion about Rebekah’s life, but Rebekah had the last word. She may have seen through her brother’s and mother’s concern and made a decision to not delay. GOD orchestrated a strange situation that suddenly came up.

One day Rebekah was doing chores as usual, then next day, she was about to leave forever. This would have been difficult to understand for any family. But Rebekah may have also known in her heart, that GOD would take care of her. She agreed, possibly because of her faith in the LORD.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about this small conflict?
  • Has GOD ever told you something and the next day, you second guess what HE said?
  • Will you remain prayerful when someone puts up a false barrier to what GOD wants you to do?

Celebration Gifts

Celebration Gifts

Genesis 24: 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing comes from the Lord; we cannot speak to you either bad or good. 51 Here is Rebekah before you; take her and go, and let her be your master’s son’s wife, as the Lord has spoken.”

52 And it came to pass, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, that he worshiped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth. 53 Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.

============

Laban, Rebekah’s brother and Bethuel, Rebekah’s father, heard Abraham’s servant explain what he came for. They heard the strange story and replied, “The thing comes from the LORD.”

My Observations:

  • Abraham’s servant went to Rebekah’s family and explained his mission that was given to him by GOD through Abraham.
  • The HOLY SPIRIT prepared the heart of Laban and Rebekah’s mother.
  • Bethuel agreed that the situation had to be orchestrated by the LORD, but may have had some hesitance that Abraham’s servant sensed, causing him not to give him gifts.

Rebekah woke up that day ash she did every day. She was simply doing what she would normally do and was not thinking about anything else, other than the final chores for the day. Little did she know, GOD had something in store for her. Abraham’s servant was delivered to her by the HOLY SPIRIT. The timing was and location of his visit were uncanny.

He prayed a prayer that was ultra-specific. GOD answered that prayer, as if to say “This is MY selection.” Abraham’s servant celebrated by giving the family “precious things” and he also gave Rebekah a little of what she would soon own. This was truly a time to praise GOD!

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD told Moses about the gifts Abraham’s servant gave and to who he gave it to?
  • When is the last time you celebrated something, GOD did in your life?
  • Is it time for you to celebrate GOD for all the things HE has done for you, to you and through you?

Led in the Way of Truth

Led in the Way of Truth

Genesis 24: 42 “And this day I came to the well and said, ‘O Lord God of my master Abraham, if You will now prosper the way in which I go, 43 behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass that when the virgin comes out to draw water, and I say to her, “Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,” 44 and she says to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,”—let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’

45 “But before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah, coming out with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well and drew water. And I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ 46 And she made haste and let her pitcher down from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels a drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels a drink also. 47 Then I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the nose ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists. 48 And I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the way of truth to take the daughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”

============

Continuing in his explanation, Abraham’s servant told everyone why Rebekah was chosen. He spoke about his prayer to the LORD and the immediacy of GOD’s answer.

My Observations:

  • Abraham’s servant was surprised by how fast GOD favorably answered his prayer.
  • Abraham’s servant described how fast things happened, which showed the willingness he was looking for.
  • Abraham’s servant recognized that this circumstance could only be arranged by GOD.

Being led by the truth meant circumstances were arranged outside of Abraham’s servant’s power. He was still being led by the HOLY SPIRIT by asking Laban and Bethuel for Rebekah to come with him. He knew they could still say no, but in his heart, he knew she was the one GOD had chosen.

Abraham’s servant may have gained faith that he never had before. To see Abraham get his prayers answered over the years was one thing. But to see his own prayer get answered was special. He bowed his head and worshipped the LORD. GOD had done the impossible right in front of him.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about this recap given by Abraham’s servant?
  • Are you facing the impossible?
  • Can you believe that GOD can say “Wait” or “No” or “Yes” to your circumstance and still make it all work for you?

Sent with a Purpose

Sent with a Purpose

Genesis 24: 34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he has become great; and He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and to him he has given all that he has. 37 Now my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell; 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my family, and take a wife for my son.’ 39 And I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 But he said to me, ‘The Lord, before whom I walk, will send His angel with you and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my family and from my father’s house. 41 You will be clear from this oath when you arrive among my family; for if they will not give her to you, then you will be released from my oath.’

============

Abraham’s servant explained why he was there. He explained Abraham’s wealth and relationship to the family. He then told everyone that he was sent with a purpose whether Rebekah came with him or not.

My Observations:

  • Abraham’s servant provided the context of why he was there.
  • Only the HOLY SPIRIT could orchestrate the story Abraham’s servant told.
  • Abraham’s servant made it clear that he had nothing to gain, rather he was sent with a purpose.

Showing up as a stranger and asking for Rebekah to just up and leave was a far-fetched request. Abraham’s servant knew this would be a difficult ask, but he wanted the best for Abraham. He explained everything without embellishing. The facts were strange so if Rebekah agreed to go, it was meant to be.

Abraham’s servant even explained his conversation with Abraham. He said to Abraham “Perhaps the woman will not follow me.” Abraham then explained how the HOLY SPIRIT “before who I walk” would be with him and prosper his way. GOD still does this. The HOLY SPIRIT clears the way for you and me to prosper in HIS purpose.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD include Abraham’s servant’s synopsis of the situation?
  • What is the purpose GOD has given to you?
  • Are you ready for purpose that will be prospered by the HOLY SPIRIT?

Checked Out to Check In

Checked Out to Check In

Genesis 24: 29 Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban, and Laban ran out to the man by the well. 30 So it came to pass, when he saw the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, “Thus the man spoke to me,” that he went to the man. And there he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord! Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels.”

32 Then the man came to the house. And he unloaded the camels, and provided straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 Food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told about my errand.”

And he said, “Speak on.”

============

Laban, Rebekah’s brother, came over to check out what was going on by the well. He saw camels and a strange man speaking to his sister. He went to them and heard her story. He then invited the man into their house. He checked out Abraham’s servant.

My Observations:

  • Possibly the HOLY SPIRIT told Laban to prepare a place for a guest to come and he did so without knowing Abraham’s servant would show up.
  • Laban discovered that Abraham’s servant was the one he was waiting for.
  • Laban was excited to see Abraham’s servant because he may have heard from the HOLY SPIRIT and saw it fulfilled.

Abraham said GOD would send HIS angel before the servant. I believe the HOLY SPIRIT prepared the situation so Laban would not drive Abraham’s servant away, rather invite him into their home. Laban verified that he was the one he was looking for and got excited.

Abraham’s servant did not get caught up in the excitement. He insisted that he explain the circumstance that GOD had him in. He would not eat until he explained. Laban may have been led by the HOLY SPIRIT to listen.

Challenge

  • Why does Laban say “Come in, O blessed of the LORD?”
  • Has GOD ever sent you on a journey, not knowing if you had a place?
  • Is the HOLY SPIRIT prompting you to prepare a place for someone?

They All Praised

They All Praised

Genesis 24: 22 So it was, when the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden nose ring weighing half a shekel, and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels of gold, 23 and said, “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please, is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge?”

24 So she said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 Moreover she said to him, “We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge.”

26 Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the Lord. 27 And he said, “Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His mercy and His truth toward my master. As for me, being on the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master’s brethren.” 28 So the young woman ran and told her mother’s household these things.

============

Abraham’s servant realized that Rebekah was the one who GOD led him to. He gave her gold from the Garden of Eden. I believe all gold came from there. She explained who she was related to.

My Observations:

  • Rebekah was a strong woman who had a strong mother and grandmother.
  • Rebekah got excited, but used wisdom and ran to her “mother’s household.”
  • Abraham’s servant praised GOD for showing mercy to Abraham.

Rebekah was excited, Abraham’s servant was excited and soon the entire household would be excited. Milcah must have been a prominent figure in the community. She was Haran’s daughter. Haran was Abrahm’s brother who died. Rebekah mentioned Milcah in a way that she was the one who was known.

Abraham’s servant thanked GOD for showing him exactly what he was looking for. He wanted Abraham to get exactly what he asked for. He may not have know how important finding Rebekah was. GOD orchestrated the scenario where Abraham’s family would become involved. They seemed to be one of the few who worshipped GOD at the time.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD go into detail over whose household Rebekah belonged to?
  • What did you do when GOD answered a prayer in your favor?
  • Can you praise GOD for what HE has done and what HE will do in your life?

Stunned

Stunned

Genesis 24: 15 And it happened, before he had finished speaking, that behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. 16 Now the young woman was very beautiful to behold, a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the well, filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher.”

18 So she said, “Drink, my lord.” Then she quickly let her pitcher down to her hand, and gave him a drink. 19 And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 Then she quickly emptied her pitcher into the trough, ran back to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man, wondering at her, remained silent so as to know whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not.

============

Abraham’s servant was praying to the LORD, probably because he had seen Abraham do this often. He was not testing GOD or even trying to muster up faith by forcing GOD to do the impossible on his terms. He simply asked GOD to help him not make a mistake in choosing a wife for Isaac. Before he could finish speaking, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulders.

My Observations:

  • The HOLY SPIRIT orchestrated the perfect timing of Abraham’s servant being at the well when Rebekah came out.
  • Rebekah had a servant leader’s heart, able to serve strangers without complaint or personal gain.
  • Abraham’s servant was stunned because the LORD answered his prayer exactly as he asked.

“Is this too good to be true?”, the servant may have asked himself. He asked a very specific prayer and it was answered so quickly and specifically. I believe GOD still does this. HE does not mind a specific prayer that is coupled with the right heart.

Abraham’s servant would gain nothing from this prayer being answered. The wife would be for Isaac, and Abraham would get the promise GOD had for him. Abraham’s servant wanted what was best for everyone else because he was already blessed by running Abraham’s household. He had everything Abraham had so he was as wealthy as Abraham. His prayer was answered.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD mention to Moses that Abraham’s servant remained silent, “wondering at her?”
  • Have you ever asked GOD for something and it came through so quickly that you were stunned?
  • Are you willing to ask GOD for something for someone else without the need for personal gain?

Seeking the Best for Others

Seeking the Best for Others

Genesis 24: 10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, for all his master’s goods were in his hand. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made his camels kneel down outside the city by a well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water. 12 Then he said, “O Lord God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. 14 Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”

============

Nervous and confused, Abraham’s servant did as he was commanded. He went to Mesopotamia, city of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. Abraham and Nahor were born in Ur, land of the Chaldeans, but when their brother Haran died, they both moved. Nahor was named after his grandfather. Abraham’s servant prayed to the LORD.

My Observations:

  • Even someone who did not speak to the LORD much, saw the power of GOD.
  • Abraham’s servant had everything Abraham had at his disposal, so going on this quest must have been important.
  • Abrahm’s servant wanted the best for Abraham and he sought clarity.

Instead of asking people “Where are Nahor’s relatives?”, Abraham’s servant sought clarity from GOD. He had been with Abraham through difficult times and saw him succeed, over and over. He was probably nervous at disappointing Abraham, even though he would be released from the oath he took if things did not work out.

Abraham’s servant prayed a specific prayer, not to test GOD’s power, rather to know it was HIM who provided the answer versus guessing wrong on a matter of this importance. Abraham’s servant wanted the best for Abraham. He asked for GOD’s kindness to be shown. GOD listened to this prayer.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about Abraham’s servant’s prayer?
  • Have you ever needed clarity from GOD?
  • Do you want the best for someone and are willing to ask GOD to show HIS kindness?

Spiritual Purpose Orchestrated

Spiritual Purpose Orchestrated

Genesis 24: And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I take your son back to the land from which you came?”

But Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there. The Lord God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. And if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be released from this oath; only do not take my son back there.” So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

Abraham’s servant asked for clarification regarding Isaac. He wondered if he should take Isaac with him to live in the land where Abraham grew up. Abraham said “no” and gave an explanation of how things would happen.

My Observations:

  • When GOD created the heaven and the earth, the HOLY SPIRIT hovered over the water.
  • When GOD created humans, HE said Let “US” make man in “OUR” own image.
  • When GOD was about to tear down the Tower of Babel, HE said let “US” go down and confuse their language.

Abraham must have seen the “US” part of GOD in action. I believe when Abraham said that GOD would send “HIS angel” before you, he may have been referring to the HOLY SPIRIT. I believe JESUS walked in the Garden of Eden and spoke with Noah. I also believe that JESUS and the HOLY SPIRIT appeared together somehow.

It makes sense to me that this is the HOLY SPIRIT because the situation needed to be orchestrated, requiring multiple people to be guided. Up to this point, we have only seen angels appear with JESUS and only having information that was given to them. They discovered information as they helped Lot out the city. BUT the HOLY SPIRIT would know exactly what to do to guide the situation into the promise of GOD.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about the conclusion Abraham had regarding sending his servant to find a wife for Isaac?
  • Has GOD told you something would happen and you need the HOLY SPIRIT to orchestrate the situation?
  • Will you seek the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT so HE will guide you to be part of someone else’s growth or salvation today?

A Promise to Remember

A Promise to Remember

Genesis 24: Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

============

After years of difficulties, Abraham finally saw the promise GOD made to him come to fruition. Isaac was born through Sarah who was barren for ninety years. They lived with the promised child for thirty-seven years, but then Sarah died. Isaac was in his thirties. Abraham made the leader of his household swear to find a wife for his son in the land where he grew up.

My Observations:

  • GOD did not provide the servant’s name.
  • Placing his hand under Abraham’s thigh would be an action that is so odd and uncomfortable, that he would definitely remember the promise.
  • Abraham did not know how long it would take to find a wife for Isaac, so he made his servant swear by the LORD, who would always be watching.

Living around the Hittites and the Canaanites may have provided safety and possibly the comforts of the best standards of living. But Abraham recognized that the people were not followers of GOD. He wanted the best for his son, so he made his servant swear that he would not find a wife locally, but return to his original home to find relatives who would believed and walked with the LORD.

The servant would remember the strange request for the rest of his life. Abraham was very serious about following GOD because of all GOD had taken him through. He was blessed “in all things.” Every animal and crop was fruitful and multiplied well. Every business deal went well. Even his health was solid. He even had a loyal servant who benefitted from GOD’s blessings.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD told Moses about Abraham making his servant swear not to choose a wife for Isaac amongst the Hittites and the Canaanites?
  • Have you remained loyal to GOD all your days?
  • What does long lasting loyalty to GOD look like in your promises?

Abraham Buys Sarah’s Tomb

Abraham Buys Sarah’s Tomb

Genesis 23: 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, 15 “My lord, listen to me; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver. What is that between you and me? So bury your dead.” 16 And Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out the silver for Ephron which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, currency of the merchants.

17 So the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, which were within all the surrounding borders, were deeded 18 to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.

19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded to Abraham by the sons of Heth as property for a burial place.

============

Ephron the Hittite was very wealthy and owned a field with a cave fit to bury a king. Abraham asked that he purchase the cave from Ephron, but Ephron insisted on giving it to Abraham. Knowing this “gift” would be forgotten, Abraham insisted on paying for the tomb.

My Observations:

  • This is the first mention of record keeping such as a deed, so the Hittites were advanced.
  • Abraham understood currency and was able to purchase Sarah’s tomb.
  • Silver was the currency of choice since gold was rare and highly sought after as a part of the Garden of Eden.

Living amongst the Hittites may have been rewarding and challenging at the same time. This group of raiders were strong, which would probably keep Abrahm ready to fight at all times. But on the other hand, no outside raiders would dare to attack. This seemed like a suitable place to bury Sarah.

Abraham became rich in land through this purchase. He probably stationed guards around the land to keep people from squatting. He received a deed and buried Sarah in the tomb. He paid more for the land than CHRIST was offered for HIS life.

Challenge

  • Why did GOD go into detail about how much ‘Abraham paid for Sarah’s tomb and how he got a deed?
  • Has anyone ever offered to pay for something for you, but you sensed it would be wise for you to pay for it yourself?
  • What is GOD’s wisdom saying to you about dealing with someone who does not have your best interest in mind?

Favor Recognized

Favor Recognized

Genesis 23:And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, “Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will withhold from you his burial place, that you may bury your dead.”

Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is your wish that I bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and meet with Ephron the son of Zohar for me, that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he has, which is at the end of his field. Let him give it to me at the full price, as property for a burial place among you.”

10 Now Ephron dwelt among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the presence of the sons of Heth, all who entered at the gate of his city, saying, 11 “No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field and the cave that is in it; I give it to you in the presence of the sons of my people. I give it to you. Bury your dead!”

============

Sarah had come to the end of her life. Abraham wanted to bury her some place special. Ephron had a cave that would have been suited for a ruler of that day. Abraham offered to pay for the cave, but Ephron wanted to give it to him.

My Observations:

  • Ephron recognized the favor GOD had on Abraham.
  • Even in a land of people who did not follow GOD’s ways, Abraham was seen as special.
  • Abraham and Sarah were feared because of the many supernatural things that happened in their lives.

The Hittites were powerful from a human perspective. They probably took what they wanted, when they wanted it. But Abraham did not want a gift from Ephron, probably for the same reason he did not want money from the king of Sodom.

Ephron and the other Hittites saw Abraham as someone who could bring on destruction to their city and respected GOD’s power, but only out of fear. They still did not follow GOD. Abraham’s relationship with GOD seemed known, even by those who did not believe in HIM.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about these conversations?
  • Have you ever been in a place where you were the only follower of CHRIST?
  • Do you realize that when JESUS called you light, you brighten up dark places just by being present?

Ain’t Too Proud to Beg

Ain’t Too Proud to Beg

Genesis 23: Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. So Sarah died in Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

Then Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, “I am a foreigner and a visitor among you. Give me property for a burial place among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

============

Thirty-seven years after Isaac was born, Sarah died in the land of Canaan. Abraham spoke to the descendants of Heth, son of Canaan, asking for a place to bury Sarah.

My Observations:

  • Abraham mourned Sarah’s death.
  • Abraham lived among people who did not believe in following GOD’s ways.
  • Abraham had to humbly ask for a place to bury Sarah.

Living in a place that had people who did not follow beliefs in GOD seemed difficult, yet Abraham was able to do this with humility. He seemed like he did not try to change the people, rather live for GOD. He moved to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites without worry of being tainted away from GOD.

He was getting older and had learned that fighting was not the answer. He did not just gran the first place and bury Sarah, rather he asked for a place that could be recognized as her grace.  Abraham showed tremendous humility.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about the conversation between Abraham and the Sons of Heth?
  • Have you ever felt like a foreigner in a group of people you may even be familiar with?
  • Can you know and understand that GOD is with you even when you feel alone?

All in the Family

All in the Family

Genesis 22: 20 Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, “Indeed Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: 21 Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.

============

After the flood, GOD said to Noah’s family, “Be fruitful and multiply” just like HE said to Adam and Eve. Generations passed and Terah, father of Abraham, Nahor and Haran, was born. Haran died and tore Terah apart. Abraham and Nahor got a plan. They would get married and bring some joy to Terah.

Abraham married Sarah and Nahor married Haran’s daughter Milcah. Someone from Milcah’s family told Abraham about her children.

My Observations:

  • Milcah was watched over by the LORD.
  • Milcah and Nahor also shared in the blessing from GOD.
  • Milcah had a child named Bethuel who was the father of Rebekah, who will be discussed later.

Though the family faced the difficulties of death, they lived for GOD in a way that HE mentioned them to Moses. JESUS, the Angel of the LORD, seemed close to this family and must have spoken to them regularly. The heartache of losing Haran was filled with joy through Nahor and Milcah.

Milcah was opposite of Sarah as she had eight children. They remained in the area that Terah left, amongst the Chaldeans. JESUS’ human lineage would come through this family. To clarify, I believe JESUS was the one who made numerous appearances in the Old Testament.

Challenge

  • Why does GOD give Moses this conversation and lineage?
  • Have you ever thought you were not seen by GOD?
  • Do you realize you are part of GOD’s family and HE sees you and loves you?

Reason for Blessing

Reason for Blessing

Genesis 22: 15 Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

============

Abraham was told by GOD to leave his father’s place to go to a place GOD did not tell him the location. He then faced all kinds of issues like famine, raiders, liars and a decadent city.

My Observations:

  • Abraham was the example of total obedience to GOD
  • Abraham believed in GOD like a child and he kept this belief all his life.
  • Anything GOD told Abraham to do, he obeyed.

JESUS called to Abraham out of heaven a second time and gives Abraham the reason HE was providing the blessing. As if to say “See, that’s what I’M talking about,” JESUS tells Abraham why the blessing was coming.

JESUS did not want a human sacrifice, rather HE wanted to show you and me that there was a human named Abraham who put total trust in HIM. As difficult as it is, obedience to GOD is special to HIM and HE loves when we surrender our ways to HIM.

Life is not ours, rather it is GOD’s to use as HE pleases. When GOD says to do something, there should be no question, but action. GOD planned from the beginning to bless Abraham through his lineage. JESUS would become a human, live a sinless life, get murdered by HIS creation and be raised from the dead to open the scroll that held the sentence of Satan.

Rebellion was introduced in the Garden of Eden by Satan, JESUS blesses all those who wins the internal battle of disbelief and disobedience. Belief and obedience to JESUS gives life!

Challenge

  • Why does GOD tell Moses about this conversation between JESUS and Abraham?
  • Have you ever been tempted to give up and no longer follow JESUS?
  • Is obeying JESUS your first response or is it a struggle?

The-LORD-Will-Provide

The-LORD-Will-Provide

Genesis 22: 13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

============

After being stopped by JESUS, Abraham turned around and saw a ram caught in a thicket. After GOD’s curse on the planet, weeds and thorny bushes were allowed to grow along side of fruit. Abraham built an altar to sacrifice his son, whom he loved. Instead of sacrificing his son, GOD provided a ram.

My Observations:

  • Abraham would have seen the ram as he built the altar, so it must not have been there.
  • GOD stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac and then, at that moment, provided the ram.
  • Abraham had a mountain top experience and named the place, “The-LORD-Will-Provide.”

Making an example out of Abraham, GOD waited until the very last second to provide. Abraham needed total dependence on GOD to come through with a solution, otherwise he could have said that he found it.

This example is scary, strange and difficult to swallow. BUT GOD meant business. HE needed someone who would place total belief and faith in HIM without any doubts. I believe HE wants you and me to do the same. GOD wants total reliance on HIS abilities to guide and provide. HE knows what we need way before we ask. HE can also say “No” or “Wait.”

Isaac was supposed to die, but GOD provided another sacrifice. We were supposed to die because of our sins. BUT GOD provided another sacrifice, namely JESUS. GOD is our provider.

Challenge

  • Why do you think GOD waited until the very last moment to provide a substitute sacrifice?
  • Do things GOD told you have to go the way you think?
  • What provision are you trusting GOD for and do you have total belief that HE will provide it?

Commitment Level Set

Commitment Level Set

Genesis 22:Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

11 But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”

So he said, “Here I am.”

12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

============

GOD knows all. HE is omniscient.  HE did not discover Abraham’s commitment level when Abraham raised the knife to slay his son Isaac, rather GOD may have set the commitment level within him.

My Observations:

  • Abraham was committed to GOD from his youth.
  • Abraham heard and believed many passed down stories from his father and from his ancestors, Enoch and Shem.
  • Abraham had no doubt that GOD would do as HE said HE would do, so he almost went through with the strange sacrifice.

This example of commitment was shown by Abraham for you and me. GOD did not have anything different for Abraham to do that required more training. GOD shared this commitment level with everyone who seeks to follow HIM, because, I believe, we can sometimes get so enamored with the thing GOD gives us, that we lose sight that the thing is still HIS.

HE may give us a vision, or a gift or earthly wealth and we hold onto it like it is ours. Every human is HIS, every animal and every place we build are HIS. Even our very lives are HIS. We may think we can do what we want to do, but followers of CHRIST are willing to sacrifice things that are precious to us, just because we love GOD. HE is willing to set a higher level of commitment within you and me.

Challenge

  • Why did JESUS call to Abraham from heaven?
  • Do you spend time worrying about something GOD has given you and now you may lose it?
  • Are you willing to sacrifice the thing you love so your level of commitment to GOD can increase?
