Father’s Love
Genesis 37: 29 Then Reuben returned
to the pit, and indeed Joseph was not in the pit; and
he tore his clothes. 30 And he returned to his
brothers and said, “The lad is no more; and
I, where shall I go?”
31 So they took Joseph’s tunic,
killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 32 Then
they sent the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to
their father and said, “We have found this. Do you know whether it is your
son’s tunic or not?”
33 And he recognized it and said, “It
is my son’s tunic. A wild beast has devoured him. Without doubt
Joseph is torn to pieces.” 34 Then Jacob tore
his clothes, put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many
days. 35 And all his sons and all his
daughters arose to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted, and he
said, “For I shall go down into the grave to my son in mourning.” Thus his
father wept for him.
36 Now the Midianites had sold
him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of
the guard.
============
Joseph’s brothers sold him to the Ishmaelites. When Reuben returned,
he realized Joseph was gone. He mourned violently. The brothers then
manufactured evidence by killing a young goat and dipping Joseph’s tunic in the
blood. Jacob, otherwise known as Israel, mourned violently by tearing his
clothes.
My Observations:
- Reuben
must have left after trying to convince his brothers not to kill Joseph.
- Joseph
was in the pit for such a short period of time, that Reuben left for a
little while and when he returned, Joseph was gone.
- Jacob
could not be comforted because he thought his son was dead.
Seeing the false evidence, Jacob could not be cheered up.
Reuben may not have been thinking clearly, but he went along with the charade.
The brothers pretended that something happened, but they tried to stay away
from actually lying. They asked a question instead of telling the truth.
Jacob could not be comforted. He declared that it must have
been a wild animal that killed his son. This situation was not turning out well
at all. The jealous brothers got their way by getting rid of Joseph, but placed
their father in a state of mourning that he would not let go of.
Challenge
- Why
does GOD tell Moses about the false evidence Joseph’s brothers made?
- Has
a situation ever been presented to you that proved to be false?
- Do
you know your HEAVENLY FATHER loves you deeply despite the situation you
are in?
