Ready for the Return

Ready for the Return

2 Corinthians 12: 19 Perhaps you think that all along we have been trying to defend ourselves before you. No! We speak as Christ would have us speak in the presence of God, and everything we do, dear friends, is done to help you. 20 I am afraid that when I get there I will find you different from what I would like you to be and you will find me different from what you would like me to be. I am afraid that I will find quarreling and jealousy, hot tempers and selfishness, insults and gossip, pride and disorder. 21 I am afraid that the next time I come my God will humiliate me in your presence, and I shall weep over many who sinned in the past and have not repented of the immoral things they have done—their lust and their sexual sins.

============

When the teacher stepped out, it was our chance to get up and act silly. It looked like fun. And for so long, I had never participated in the foolery. This time I decided to join in. Unaware of time, I was caught when the teacher returned; meanwhile the others dashed to their desks.

  • I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing.
  • I got caught in the act.
  • I could not say anything because I was guilty.

Paul spoke about his impending third trip. He mentions that he is afraid of what he will find when he gets there. While He had taught what was right, he was afraid the people had chosen not to follow GOD.

My Observations:

  • One day JESUS will return and wants to catch me doing HIS will.
  • One day JESUS will return and desires to see me following HIS ways.
  • One day JESUS will return and will judge my actions according to HIS standards.

Believing in JESUS as the Savior also means believing that HE will return one day with all power. Not even JESUS knows when HE will return, only the HEAVENLY FATHGER. While JESUS has forgiven me of all my sins, past present and future, it does not give me the license to wildly indulge.

Sin distracts me. It makes me doubt GOD loves me and I question HIS love. No wonder Satan tries to tempt me. BUT GOD knows where I am. HE provides the strength to follow HIS ways and to seek the imminent return of JESUS. I am grateful so I choose to follow JESUS this day.

Challenge

  • Have you ever been tempted to sin a little?
  • What part of the writer’s list do you see that may be a bit convicting?
  • Will you increase your fear of the LORD by desiring to please HIM and follow HIS ways little by little, knowing you will never be perfect?

Mislabeled

Mislabeled

2 Corinthians 12: 16 You will agree, then, that I was not a burden to you. But someone will say that I was tricky, and trapped you with lies. 17 How? Did I take advantage of you through any of the messengers I sent? 18 I begged Titus to go, and I sent the other believer with him. Would you say that Titus took advantage of you? Do not he and I act from the very same motives and behave in the same way?

============

After working extremely hard I overheard someone say that I was not a “hard worker” as that guy over there. This statement was very confusing. I had done similar quantities of work with the same quality. This angered me so I spent my time trying to prove them wrong!

  • I felt I was mislabeled.
  • I wanted to get rid of the label because I was now insecure.
  • I thought I had something to prove or needed to act different even though I was doing what I was supposed to do.

Paul addressed divisiveness. Some people saw the obvious servanthood he brought, while others labeled him a liar. This angered Paul and he had to address the murmurs of those who wanted to say he took advantage of the people.

My Observations

  • GOD says to me “You will be hated by all for MY name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”
  • GOD says to me “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for MY sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
  • GOD says to me “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.”

Following what GOD says is not easy. I mean, HIS message of true love is met with opposition at every turn. JESUS died for all humans. All we have to do is believe that we need a Savior. Sounds simple. But this simple message is twisted by people who want financial gain or power.

They steal the message in hopes to gain power or influence. Mentioning JESUS name is sacred and is to be used to invoke a display of a relationship of surrender. Those who choose to not believe in HIS power may mention HIS name in vain and maybe even use persecuting labels to get their way. I am grateful JESUS makes me secure and allows me to abide in HIM.

Challenge

  • Do you sense the hurt and disappointment from the writer?
  • Have you ever been mislabeled, devalued or brushed off?
  • If you are living for CHRIST, do you expect to be persecuted by those who are not living for HIM?
  • Will you persevere through the mislabels and allow GOD to draw who HE pleases to HIM in HIS way and HIS timing?

Pseudo Parent

Pseudo Parent

2 Corinthians 12: 14 This is now the third time that I am ready to come to visit you—and I will not make any demands on you. It is you I want, not your money. After all, children should not have to provide for their parents, but parents should provide for their children. 15 I will be glad to spend all I have, and myself as well, in order to help you. Will you love me less because I love you so much?

============

“Come in and have some dinner” were the words I delighted ti hear. Many households invited me in to eat with them in the community I grew up. What was it about these people who took time out of their busy lives to help us kids? They did it from their heart.

  • I was blessed to have many pseudo parents who cared for me.
  • I was blessed to be watched over by those who had hearts large enough to care for others.
  • I was blessed to have so many people who would take me places, feed me, and mostly teach me how to grow up.

Pau was about to visit. He explained that he was not coming there for their money. This may have been a selfish concern on their part that he wanted to ease. Instead, he was being a pseudo parent and wanted to show his love.

My Observations

  • GOD doesn’t mind if I remain a child.
  • GOD wants me to grow up to love others the way I can.
  • GOD wants me to understand the purpose of having the HOLY SPIRIT live inside me is to stretch my heart to fit others.

When life is all about me, my words sound different. I mean, I have more complaints than solutions when I am a child. BUT GOD wants me to grow up and point others to HIM as the only solution to life’s problems.

HE allows fiery trials in my life to burn away the things that do not belong. HE then opens my eyes to other people HE wants me to reach. HE provides enough for me and her or him as I encounter each person. I am glad I have had great parents and pseudo parents to grow me in many ways.

Challenge

  • Do you feel the care of the writer?
  • Have you ever been tempted to speak about GOD only for money?
  • Will you allow the HOLY SPIRIT to stretch your heart to fit other people and serve them so they can believe in JESUS in a saving way today?

Patience

Patience

2 Corinthians 12: 11 I am acting like a fool—but you have made me do it. You are the ones who ought to show your approval of me. For even if I am nothing, I am in no way inferior to those very special “apostles” of yours. 12 The many miracles and wonders that prove that I am an apostle were performed among you with much patience. 13 How were you treated any worse than the other churches, except that I did not bother you for financial help? Please forgive me for being so unfair!

============

Listening to his plea did not feel comfortable. He listed all the things he had done for the company but I was told to get rid of several people. “You have to make the hard calls if you want to be in this position” were the sentiments of my peers and other leaders.

  • I sometimes took lessons from the impatient and applied them to other parts of my life.
  • I sometimes looked at everything from the bottom line.
  • I sometimes valued money over what was truly valuable.

Paul expressed his concern that the people had turned away from the following of JESUS to listen to others who may have been smooth talkers. Paul had performed many miracles that people were witnessed to. Only GOD could have allowed the miracles he performed, yet the people turned away. Paul started to get impatient.

My Observations

  • When I get impatient, I have to turn back to GOD to ask “How come YOU are patient with me?”
  • GOD wants me to serve others so I need to continue to ask HIM for patience.
  • Looking at the progress of others can take my eyes off of the patience GOD wants me to have for them and myself.

“Have patience” is easy to say but hard to follow. I mean, when times are fast paced or anxious or stressful, using patience is the best thing to do, yet I found myself caught up in quick solutions that may not work. GOD’s solutions sometimes don’t come quick enough for me so I jump in with “my” plan, then I “tell” HIM to help “me” with “my” plan.

GOD patiently says “No” and guides me to a better plan. HE then shows me how impatient I have been with others and wants me to take a deep breath and slow down. HE then says, “Be patient with yourself so you can be patient with others.” This gives me the permission to mess up big and know HE patiently loves me anyway. I am glad GOD has patience with me and loves me dearly.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer is so upset?
  • Have you ever worked very hard on something and were met with criticism or been overlooked for a promotion or devalued in some way?
  • Will you turn your thoughts to GOD who has shown you infinite patience and ask for a small dose of HIS patience so you can continue with your purpose today?

Elusive Perfection

Elusive Perfection

2 Corinthians 12: But to keep me from being puffed up with pride because of the many wonderful things I saw, I was given a painful physical ailment, which acts as Satan's messenger to beat me and keep me from being proud. Three times I prayed to the Lord about this and asked him to take it away. But his answer was: “My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak.” I am most happy, then, to be proud of my weaknesses, in order to feel the protection of Christ's power over me. 10 I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

============

My prayers felt unheard. “LORD please heal me of…” or “LORD please heal this person or that person” or “LORD please give me a certain amount of money by this date” or something else I would ask for. When the answer was “No” I questioned if I was doing something wrong.

  • I sometimes got tired of praying and hearing “No” for the answer.
  • I kept looking at current circumstances as being hopeless.
  • I wondered “why are these things happening to me?” when I was trying hard.

Paul was called by GOD in a magnificent way. But he also suffered a lot. He had a problem that he prayed to be released from on three occasions. He was probably thinking “If this problem would just be gone, then I would be able to serve GOD better.” GOD’s answer, “MY grace is all you need.”

My Observations

  • I keep trying to make my relationship with GOD one sided.
  • I have many problems and not a lot of answers.
  • I have looked at problems the wrong way and GOD wants me to see HIS power is greatest when I am not in HIS way.

Fixing the world’s problems seemed simple to me at one time. I mean, after GOD forgave my rebellious lifestyle, HE had me learn about HIM. I found many promises of protections, wealth and great relationships with everyone. But that did not pan out the way I thought.

I ran into problem after problem after problem. “Why aren’t my prayers being answered?” I would ask. Little did I know, my prayers were being answered with “No, because MY grace is all you need.” HE guides me to realize that when I am weakest, I can feel CHRIST’s power over me. I am content with my weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions and difficulties for CHRIST’s sake.

Challenge

  • Can you feel the anguish of the writer?
  • Have you ever prayed for something to change over and over and over, yet it has not?
  • Can you follow the writer’s example and look at the situation different by understanding that GOD’s power is greatest when your power is reduced and only HE can solve the situation in HIS time, in HIS way?

Equally Needed

Equally Needed

2 Corinthians 12: I have to boast, even though it doesn't do any good. But I will now talk about visions and revelations given me by the Lord. I know a certain Christian man who fourteen years ago was snatched up to the highest heaven (I do not know whether this actually happened or whether he had a vision—only God knows). 3-4 I repeat, I know that this man was snatched to Paradise (again, I do not know whether this actually happened or whether it was a vision—only God knows), and there he heard things which cannot be put into words, things that human lips may not speak. So I will boast about this man—but I will not boast about myself, except the things that show how weak I am. If I wanted to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be telling the truth. But I will not boast, because I do not want any of you to have a higher opinion of me than you have as a result of what you have seen me do and heard me say.

============

Eloquent speakers, smart thinkers, strong athletes and talented people seemed to “always” be ahead of me when it came to being chosen. I would raise my hand but receive the words “That’s alright, we have already chosen someone else.” “Am I unwanted?” I would ask GOD.

  • I felt untalented.
  • I felt rejected.
  • I felt unneeded, undesired, and unpleasant.

Paul speaks about his incredible encounter with the LORD. He was sought after by GOD to be a special messenger and was revealed an indescribable vision that catapulted his purpose to the highest level. Even though this uncommon event happened, he did not want anyone to have a higher opinion of him or be jealous of the calling.

My Observations

  • I need to recognize GOD’s calling on my life.
  • I need to look at only my relationship with the LORD and not be jealous of someone else’s.
  • I need to live my life with the purpose GOD gave me and know it is just as important as the next person.

Titles cause me to think of people on different levels. I mean, when someone has a special title in the world’s eyes, I follow the protocol associated with that title. This may require extra attention I would not give to a “common” person. BUT GOD wants me to treat everyone the same.

HE wants me to see that all of us have sinned and fall short of HIS glory. HE then wants me to praise HIM when someone accepts HIS SON as their Savior so he or she can live a life for JESUS. HE wants me to live my life with that same purpose, knowing we are all equally loved by HIM. I am glad GOD loves me just as much as those who are called to do what they do.

Challenge

  • While reading this passage, do you feel lower than the writer?
  • Have you ever compared yourself to the names written in the Bible and felt better or worse?
  • Will you consider not comparing yourself to others and know you are loved, needed and wanted to the highest by GOD today?

Powerful Powerlessness

Powerful Powerlessness

2 Corinthians 11: 30 If I must boast, I will boast about things that show how weak I am. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus—blessed be his name forever!—knows that I am not lying. 32 When I was in Damascus, the governor under King Aretas placed guards at the city gates to arrest me. 33 But I was let down in a basket through an opening in the wall and escaped from him.

============

Feeling powerless was old, so I decided to do something about it. I was tired of being pushed around by bullies. I joined a gym and started lifting weights. The stronger I got, the more I noticed how large the bullies were. One bully wanted me to join him to fight other bullies in a bar.

  • I thought strength was the answer.
  • I thought power was something worthy of attaining.
  • I thought “I” could protect myself if I just got stronger.

Paul says something the world disagrees with. He boasts about being weak. He then gave an example of how the rich and powerful wanted to stop him from speaking about the King of kings, namely JESUS. Though powerless, he was protected from harm.

My Observations

  • My weakest times are when I am most powerful in GOD’s eyes.
  • Admitting “I cannot do this alone and I need GOD to handle this” is the most powerful statement I can say.
  • Asking GOD for HIS will to be done is more powerful than trying to manipulate HIM to do “my” bidding.

Yielding to GOD is extremely powerful. I mean, when I want something so bad, that I worry about it and lay awake thinking about it, I get frustrated, confused and maybe even a little doubtful. But there is a way to approach the chaos that seems to leave me powerless. Let GOD handle it HIS way.

GOD has a purpose for me and for those who believe in HIS SON. The enemy wants me to think the circumstance is helpless. BUT GOD’s power is the ultimate power and HE is in control. HE owns every minute and every circumstance must go before HIM for HIS approval. I am glad I can say “YOUR will be done” and HE shows HE cares

Challenge

  • Why did the writer choose this example?
  • What examples of weakness that brings power can you think of?
  • Will you let GOD handle your current situation and admit you need HIM for protection, guidance, strength and love today?

In loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Farley and Mr. Davis

Overlooked Credentials

Overlooked Credentials

2 Corinthians 11: 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they Abraham's descendants? So am I. 23 Are they Christ's servants? I sound like a madman—but I am a better servant than they are! I have worked much harder, I have been in prison more times, I have been whipped much more, and I have been near death more often. 24 Five times I was given the thirty-nine lashes by the Jews; 25 three times I was whipped by the Romans; and once I was stoned. I have been in three shipwrecks, and once I spent twenty-four hours in the water. 26 In my many travels I have been in danger from floods and from robbers, in danger from my own people and from Gentiles; there have been dangers in the cities, dangers in the wilds, dangers on the high seas, and dangers from false friends. 27 There has been work and toil; often I have gone without sleep; I have been hungry and thirsty; I have often been without enough food, shelter, or clothing. 28 And not to mention other things, every day I am under the pressure of my concern for all the churches. 29 When someone is weak, then I feel weak too; when someone is led into sin, I am filled with distress.

============

Choosing people for the team became political. One person did not seem right for the job but was liked by the higher ups. Another person had done the hard work, but had a few arguments with the higher ups. I had to make a choice.

  • It seemed like a good idea to go with the popular route.
  • It seemed good for “my” career if I went with what people liked versus what they needed.
  • It seemed “safe” to choose the route chosen by the higher ups because in reality I was afraid.

Paul was livid that the people had fallen away from the teachings of JESUS so easily. They listened to smooth talkers and probably chose actions that were fruitless. He lists what he went through to let everyone know it was not easy to follow CHRIST, but it was the highest priority.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to stand firm in the middle of difficulties.
  • GOD wants me to be confident that HE will protect me especially from those who overtly and covertly try to harm me.
  • GOD wants me to understand that life will not be easy and I am to use its difficulties as a testimony to JESUS.

The wide path that looks easy but is sometimes dangerous. I mean, JESUS took the narrowest path one could take. HE followed every rule HE made and never sinned. HE then released me and everyone else who believes in HIM, from needing to be perfect.

JESUS doesn’t expect me to achieve, nor does he expect me to be perfect. That is a human flaw. HE simply wants me to recognize HIS servants look and act different than the world’s servants. HE wants me to keep praise on my lips as I go through difficulties for HIM. I am glad HE opens my eyes to HIS servants who seek HIS face daily.

Challenge

  • Why is the writer so passionate and what is he passionate about?
  • Would you be upset if you worked extremely hard only to be passed over by someone who was not qualified, but liked?
  • What credentials do you think GOD wants from HIS servants?
  • Will you be brave enough to point your life to JESUS in spite of what naysayers speak about you?

Dare to be Foolish

Dare to be Foolish

2 Corinthians 11: 16 I repeat: no one should think that I am a fool. But if you do, at least accept me as a fool, just so I will have a little to boast of. 17 Of course what I am saying now is not what the Lord would have me say; in this matter of boasting I am really talking like a fool. 18 But since there are so many who boast for merely human reasons, I will do the same. 19 You yourselves are so wise, and so you gladly tolerate fools! 20 You tolerate anyone who orders you around or takes advantage of you or traps you or looks down on you or slaps you in the face. 21 I am ashamed to admit that we were too timid to do those things!

But if anyone dares to boast about something—I am talking like a fool—I will be just as daring.

============

Going with the crowd felt good. I finally fit in, even to the point where people expected me to act a certain way. I was finally considered a leader. But something happened. Someone challenged me to give up my partying ways and focus my life on CHRIST. This seemed foolish. Give up being popular?! Yeah, right!

  • I felt there was safety in numbers.
  • I wanted to be seen and noticed in the big ocean of people.
  • I wanted “my” way to be followed.

Paul seems to get sarcastic with his words. He points out that people so easily followed “fools” who used the right words at the right time. Then he says he will be daring at what the crowd says is foolish.

My Observations

  • Surrendering my life to JESUS may seem foolish to many, but not to HIM.
  • Following HIS word may seem foolish to the world, but not to HIM.
  • Seeking CHRIST every day may seem foolish to the greedy, the power hungry and the controllers, but not to HIM.

Daring to follow CHRIST means being looked at by the world as foolish. I mean, JESUS died trying to tell HIS creation HE loves each and ever one. This message of surrender could not be heard so they killed HIM, looking for a political giant to follow.

JESUS was raised from the dead and those who believe in this resurrection are labeled as foolish. “Why would GOD die?” The world does not understand HIS love and it seems foolish to the power hungry for HIM to give up everything to save HIS own creation. I gladly accept HIS foolish gift and will be just as daring to speak about HIM.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about a form of wisdom?
  • Is it tempting to follow the rich and powerful?
  • Do you think you would be different if you were rich and powerful?
  • Will you surrender your life to CHRIST and accept the weapons that are considered weak by the world, such as the fruit of the Spirit today?

Keeping It Real

Keeping It Real

2 Corinthians 11: 12 I will go on doing what I am doing now, in order to keep those other “apostles” from having any reason for boasting and saying that they work in the same way that we do. 13 Those men are not true apostles—they are false apostles, who lie about their work and disguise themselves to look like real apostles of Christ. 14 Well, no wonder! Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light! 15 So it is no great thing if his servants disguise themselves to look like servants of righteousness. In the end they will get exactly what their actions deserve.

============

Looking at the “mistakes” my peers made in other departments gave me a way to mention how “good” my department was doing. Competition was fierce over getting budget and I felt the pressure to survive. One day an issue did arise in my area. Suddenly, I was being scrutinized instead of praised.

  • I was busy looking at someone else’s problems.
  • I was focused on what other people were doing and not paying attention to what I was supposed to do.
  • I was insecure about me so I took attention off of me and put it on someone else.

Paul said a mouthful when he wrote the words “I will go on doing what I am doing.” Instead of spending time telling people about every detail of how the false apostles were disguising themselves to look like angels of light, he had to do what GOD called him to do so he would not fall.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to focus my attention on my relationship with HIM.
  • GOD wants me to see that I am the one who needs salvation, direction and encouragement.
  • GOD wants me to be true to HIS word.

Keeping it real with GOD is important. I mean, HE does not want to hear “but he” or “but she” from me. HE may ask me “How did you respond in the situation?” or “Did you use the weapons of love and patience I gave you?” The only response I can say to HIM is “No.”

BUT HE gives me many other chances to grow up and try out HIS valuable weapons. He also wants me prepared for daily attacks from the enemy’s attacks. HE gives me truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation and the HIS word as my daily protection. I am glad JESUS forgives my mistakes and gives me another chance each day.

Challenge

  • What does the writer say about the war between “good” and “evil” in this passage?
  • Do you think you are responsible for fighting false messages said by others?
  • Have you ever messed up and needed grace?
  • Will you seek a solid relationship with JESUS and make HIM LORD of your life so you can have a “real” abundant life today?

Value Proposition

Value Proposition

2 Corinthians 11: I did not charge you a thing when I preached the Good News of God to you; I humbled myself in order to make you important. Was that wrong of me? While I was working among you, I was paid by other churches. I was robbing them, so to speak, in order to help you. And during the time I was with you I did not bother you for help when I needed money; the believers who came from Macedonia brought me everything I needed. As in the past, so in the future: I will never be a burden to you! 10 By Christ's truth in me, I promise that this boast of mine will not be silenced anywhere in all of Achaia. 11 Do I say this because I don't love you? God knows I love you!

============

“Would you like to buy some candy?’ were the dreaded words I heard from my boss. “It’s for a good cause” was the explanation. I dug into my pocket and bought a candy bar with the money I had planned for lunch. “I guess this is part of the game to get ahead” I thought to myself.

  • I gave even though I did not value what I was giving to.
  • I supported something because I valued my job and comfort.
  • I added this cause to the list of many others I was being pulled into.

Paul speaks about this group not being charged for his services. He spoke to them, spent time with them and taught them something extremely valuable, namely the truth of CHRIST. But he did it for free. He brought this to their attention, not to guilt them, but to have them value what they got.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to value HIS servants.
  • GOD wants me to support those who speak on HIS behalf.
  • GOD wants me to understand the need to spread the Gospel everywhere.

Telling people about the Great news of JESUS is the most valuable thing a person can do. I mean, giving up the world’s pursuits to speak about JESUS is a huge step that the world’s structures fight against. Obstacles are placed in front of those who are determined to live for CHRIST.

“What will they eat?” or “Where will they stay?” are a couple of questions that come to mind. But in these days of many causes, supporting someone to speak about JESUS becomes noise. I have to make a choice at some point and support those who speak on HIS behalf or be the one who needs support to speak on HIS behalf. I am glad GOD has provided many people to support me as I was sent out to speak about JESUS.

Challenge

  • What value proposition is the writer speaking about?
  • Have you ever gotten so overloaded with the world’s bills and structures that you could not see yourself giving money to those who speak on CHRIST’s behalf?
  • Have you ever thought that maybe it’s you who need the support to speak on HIS behalf and need to pray about accepting HIS calling on your life today?

You ARE Special

You ARE Special

2 Corinthians 11: I do not think that I am the least bit inferior to those very special so-called “apostles” of yours! Perhaps I am an amateur in speaking, but certainly not in knowledge; we have made this clear to you at all times and in all conditions.

============

Feeling inadequate had become the norm. I was ridiculed for every aspect of my being. From the clothes I wore, to my hair, to the size of my body to the color of my skin, someone had something negative to say. On the other hand, special people who crowds flocked to seemed to have it easy.

  • I did not feel special.
  • I felt quite unwanted.
  • I doubted I could do or say anything right.

Paul focuses in on a mistake the people made when they accepted professional speakers who called themselves “apostles” but were preaching a different spirit. They may have drawn more attention to themselves versus JESUS. These people were eloquent speakers while Paul, on the other hand, had a direct encounter with JESUS. He was called to teach about JESUS.

My Observations

  • JESUS is the only one who is worthy to be pointed to.
  • GOD made me special to reach only a certain group of people HE sends me to or sent to me.
  • GOD wants me to get out of HIS way by placing HIM in the spotlight.

Being special and feeling special seem like two very different things. I mean the world would say a common worker or a person without a home is not special. In fact, these people are often overlooked and even worse, looked down on. But they are special to GOD.

GOD sees those who devalue your abilities and tears down any tactic people make to attempt to make themselves “special” in human’s eyes. GOD made you and me special for HIS purpose. HE adores when HIS name is mentioned over our own. HE was excited when HE made each person and gave each a special gift. I am glad HE loves when I use the gifts HE gave me for HIS purpose.

Challenge

  • What is the writer saying about inferiority?
  • What gifts has GOD given you?
  • Have you ever felt inferior or inadequate?
  • Will you accept JESUS’ power and grace as being sufficient so you can fulfill the special purpose HE has for you today?

Seeing Beyond Distractions

Seeing Beyond Distractions

2 Corinthians 11: I wish you would tolerate me, even when I am a bit foolish. Please do! I am jealous for you, just as God is; you are like a pure virgin whom I have promised in marriage to one man only, Christ himself. I am afraid that your minds will be corrupted and that you will abandon your full and pure devotion to Christ—in the same way that Eve was deceived by the snake's clever lies. For you gladly tolerate anyone who comes to you and preaches a different Jesus, not the one we preached; and you accept a spirit and a gospel completely different from the Spirit and the gospel you received from us!

============

“Why is he talking to me?” I thought to myself as the playground thug stopped me to ask very random questions. I was taking a different route home I usually did not take. He was being oddly nice for a change. Other thugs, who were within sight, began to giggle.

I expected being pushed or punched so I braced myself. After the brief conversation, they walked away. Someone said to me, “They were practicing picking your pocket. Didn’t you feel the guy rummaging through your coat?” I did not.

  • When I get distracted I can be deceived.
  • I was too busy looking at the problem to see the deception.
  • Instead of staying on the path home, I went to a place where I let the deception happen.

Paul tried to soften the blow that people were being deceived into believing a false gospel of salvation. He was afraid that their minds would be corrupted and the pure devotion to CHRIST would be abandoned in trade of another lesser spirit.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to remain focused on JESUS as the only way to salvation.
  • GOD wants me to accept the promise HE has for me, to be with me for eternity.
  • GOD wants me to remain devoted to CHRIST as my Savior.

Distractions are in abundance these days. I mean anyone could raise up a cause and speak boldly about it and be justified in what is being said. BUT GOD wants me to surrender my life to the one and only truth, namely JESUS.

When I can name a human or a group of humans as having “the answer” I fall prey to being distracted from the purpose GOD created me for. I lose sight that I am here for one reason, that is to be pleasing to GOD. I then try to make GOD bow down to my path and decisions BUT HE laughs at the attempt. I am glad JESUS saved me from myself and those who try to steal GOD’s title of being the MOST HIGH.

Challenge

  • Do you feel the concern of the writer?
  • What do you notice about the mind in this passage?
  • Will you look beyond the distractions of your circumstances and be led by the HOLY SPIRIT, who was sent by JESUS to live inside those who believe in HIM as the one and only true Savior today?

Seeking Approval

Seeking Approval

2 Corinthians 10: 15 So we do not boast about the work that others have done beyond the limits God set for us. Instead, we hope that your faith may grow and that we may be able to do a much greater work among you, always within the limits that God has set. 16 Then we can preach the Good News in other countries beyond you and shall not have to boast about work already done in someone else's field.

17 But as the scripture says, “Whoever wants to boast must boast about what the Lord has done.” 18 For it is when the Lord thinks well of us that we are really approved, and not when we think well of ourselves.

============

“This is really messed up” I thought to myself. I turned in my work and explained that I really did not understand the assignment very well. To my surprise I did better on the assignment than I thought. It turned out that other people did not understand the assignment either.

  • I did not like to be evaluated.
  • I did not like being told to correct my work.
  • I did not like seeking approval on things I could not understand or control.

Paul concludes explaining his personal appeal to the people to follow JESUS. He tells everyone to “boast about what the LORD has done” to avoid pointing at their own accomplishments. He explains that the LORD’s approval is the only true approval.

My Observations

  • Some of the things I think I do for the LORD I really do for the approval of humans.
  • Some of the things I think I do for humans were really done for the LORD.
  • Only GOD knows what I have done in sincerity for HIM and HE will reward me based on HIS measure.

Is donating a huge sum of money greater than giving a thirsty person a cup of water? I don’t know. BUT GOD says “And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of MY followers, you will surely be rewarded.” Motive and sincerity will always be questioned by another human. BUT GOD is the only one who has the rewards.

HE sees when I fight my sin and surrender “my” way to do something HE wants me to do to grow HIS kingdom. Boasting about what JESUS did for me seems to be the only way of gaining the approval GOD, I gladly give up pointing to me so others’ “faith may grow” in the LORD.

Challenge

  • What approval do you think the writer was seeking in order to keep preaching the Good News in other countries?
  • Have you ever felt like you were seeking approval from humans who have already wrongfully judged you?
  • Will you grow your faith in GOD and know HE has already approved you to boast about JESUS today?

Boasting Limits

Boasting Limits

2 Corinthians 10: 12 Of course we would not dare classify ourselves or compare ourselves with those who rate themselves so highly. How stupid they are! They make up their own standards to measure themselves by, and they judge themselves by their own standards! 13 As for us, however, our boasting will not go beyond certain limits; it will stay within the limits of the work which God has set for us, and this includes our work among you. 14 And since you are within those limits, we were not going beyond them when we came to you, bringing the Good News about Christ.

============

After getting the title, I felt pretty good. “I” had accomplished something “great” and other people told me they admired “my” achievements. I was given a large responsibility within the company, awards and a new office. “I” made it!

  • The more I had the poorer in humility I became.
  • The bigger the title the prouder I became within myself without knowing it.
  • The higher I climbed the more I relied on my title for self-esteem.

Paul implies a warning about comparing oneself to another, especially those who rate themselves highly. He also points to a healthier means of boasting, namely to speak about how great GOD has loved us by giving us JESUS.

My Observations

  • I should look at myself less and point more to GOD.
  • I must thank GOD for the places HE brought me and the things HE has provided.
  • I have to choose to limit myself instead of always testing the boundaries of GOD’s love.

In the days of pushing the limits, it seems strange to limit myself to anything old and stodgy. I mean, wasn’t the Bible written in times that were less complicated? Yes, but amazingly it applies even more today than when it was written.

GOD’s word, namely the Bible, provides a tiny dose of what HE chose to reveal to humans. It is inerrant in every way. Each day it can be read and applied for decision making, correction and growth. The comparison to JESUS knocks out any pride I may have, so I surrender my life to HIM. I am glad HE gave me limits to live my life abundantly.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the seemingly harsh words of the writer regarding ”self” standards?
  • How do you feel about limits?
  • Will you choose to walk within GOD’s limits, staying away from the boundaries so you can live an abundant life speaking about JESUS whenever HE sends you to people HE desires?

Authority

Authority

2 Corinthians 10: You are looking at the outward appearance of things. Are there some there who reckon themselves to belong to Christ? Well, let them think again about themselves, because we belong to Christ just as much as they do. For I am not ashamed, even if I have boasted somewhat too much about the authority that the Lord has given us—authority to build you up, not to tear you down. I do not want it to appear that I am trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 Someone will say, “Paul's letters are severe and strong, but when he is with us in person, he is weak, and his words are nothing!” 11 Such a person must understand that there is no difference between what we write in our letters when we are away and what we will do when we are there with you.

============

Telling people what they did wrong was part of my job. It worked well for the company, but not so well at home. Spotting quality issues and inconsistencies lacked the “grace” needed that companies would scoff at.

  • I lacked the ability to overlook, what I thought were, glaring issues.
  • I lacked the ability to see beyond the “outward appearance of things.”
  • I lacked soothing words when confronted.

Paul spoke about a strange authority given to everyone. The authority is to “build you up.” This authority was taken for granted. People who belonged to CHRIST were speaking negatively about what each other was doing, or not doing or believed in.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to see beyond the “outward appearance of things.”
  • GOD has given me the authority to build people up, not tear them down.
  • GOD wants me to grow up and use this authority as often as I can.

Seeing the “outward appearance of things” is the easy route. I mean, on the surface people make mistakes that seem easily correctable. But what is really going on? Why are the same mistakes made over and over? Maybe its because it is easier to dig a hole and throw someone in versus building people up.

It's easy for me to point out mistakes versus taking the opportunity to “build you up.” Frightening people or manipulating them to follow GOD is not the answer. All of us are on the same plane. We have all sinned and fall short of GOD’s glory. But what if I were to put a person on my shoulders to get noticed by GOD? The only being that is “up” is GOD. I will take the authority HE has given me to “build you up.”

Challenge

  • What dangers does the writer imply by looking at “the outward appearance of things?”
  • How does it feel to be “built up?”
  • Will you take a different tactic and “build people up” so they may see GOD as the answer versus the problem today?

Powerful Weapons

Powerful Weapons

2 Corinthians 10: I, Paul, make a personal appeal to you—I who am said to be meek and mild when I am with you, but harsh with you when I am away. By the gentleness and kindness of Christ I beg you not to force me to be harsh when I come; for I am sure I can deal harshly with those who say that we act from worldly motives. It is true that we live in the world, but we do not fight from worldly motives. The weapons we use in our fight are not the world's weapons but God's powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds. We destroy false arguments; we pull down every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey Christ. And after you have proved your complete loyalty, we will be ready to punish any act of disloyalty.

============

Feeling worried about the impending news, we gathered in a conference room and spoke only about the potential layoffs. No work was being done. I felt quite helpless. One person walked in the room with a smile that was genuine.

At first we thought she was coming in to say she was told she had a job, or perhaps she was relieved to be let go. She said, “GOD has this.” We all felt better.

  • I looked to the world for answers.
  • I tried to mimic people who the world said was “successful.”
  • I valued bottom line figures over things I thought were weak.

Paul spoke about his approach to spreading the Gospel of JESUS. Some may have said his approach was weak because did not use manipulative words to gain trust in groups as the world would do. He could have replied harshly, but he recognized using GOD’s weapons would be more important.

My Observations

  • Strongholds will be torn down when I use GOD’s weapons.
  • False arguments will eventually reveal the truth when I use GOD’s weapons.
  • Proud obstacles that deter people from knowing CHRIST will be overcome when I use GOD’s weapons.

You mean to tell me I have to fight with love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness and self-control? These sound weak! I mean, what about using the world’s tactics that seem to work for famous people? GOD’s weapons are more powerful than the rich and powerful.

HE wants me to be genuine with my belief in HIM to solve every problem that may arise. I sometimes want to jump in with “my” plan and HE tells me to “be patient” because HE is building the faithful side in me. GOD knows my circumstances and provides abundantly. I am glad HIS weapons are at work when I cannot see them.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the writer’s view on worldly motives and weapons?
  • Are you trying to fight strongholds, false arguments and proud obstacles using worldly tactics and feel you are losing?
  • Will you trade in the world’s weapons for more powerful weapons that only come from GOD today?

You Are Valued

You Are Valued

2 Corinthians 9: 12 For this service you perform not only meets the needs of God's people, but also produces an outpouring of gratitude to God. 13 And because of the proof which this service of yours brings, many will give glory to God for your loyalty to the gospel of Christ, which you profess, and for your generosity in sharing with them and everyone else. 14 And so with deep affection they will pray for you because of the extraordinary grace God has shown you. 15 Let us thank God for his priceless gift!

============

My wife worked all week and went over our parent’s house to help with our sick sister. My sister, brother, kids, nieces and nephew all chipped in to “meet the need.” Every prayer, action and thought is valued by GOD. My other brother and sister visited my parents every day in another state while my sister and I continued to pray vigilantly.

  • Your service meets the needs of GOD’s people.
  • Your prayers produce an outpouring of gratitude to GOD.
  • Many will give glory to GOD for your loyalty to the gospel of CHRIST, which you profess.

Paul recognizes people are trying their best. Some are carrying heavy loads, seemingly by themselves. They are not doing the service for human accolades, rather for GOD. The wonderful thing about his message is, GOD sees the service and is pleased!

My Observations

  • GOD is pleased with you and me for anything we do in JESUS name.
  • GOD is excited when we recognize HE gave a priceless gift to us by allowing us to murder HIS one and only SON.
  • GOD has forgiven us when we believe in the need for JESUS, who was raised from the dead and has the authority to forgive.

Trying to be “heard” by humans is tricky. I mean, hidden motives can get in the way of words spoken. BUT GOD sees our actions when we sincerely try to serve others strictly to “meet the need.”

HE sees the heart and is excited when we surrender it to HIM so the HOLY SPIRIT can be fed with our praise. I am grateful for my family and glad GOD sees every action they do for HIM.

Challenge

  • Have you ever felt overwhelmed and tired?
  • Do you feel like things are not going the way you planned?
  • Will you look at the excitement in the writers words and know your service is seen by GOD and HE is pleased with you today?
