Strange Reliability

Strange Reliability

2 Corinthians 8: 22 So we are sending our brother with them; we have tested him many times and found him always very eager to help. And now that he has so much confidence in you, he is all the more eager to help. 23 As for Titus, he is my partner and works with me to help you; as for the other brothers who are going with him, they represent the churches and bring glory to Christ. 24 Show your love to them, so that all the churches will be sure of it and know that we are right in boasting about you.

============

“Sorry I am late, I had car troubles” were the words of a volunteer I overheard. She was determined to help and would not let any obstacle ruin her service to those in need. On the other hand, when things were not going my way, I wanted to quit.

  • I wondered what made her keep going.
  • I pondered what it was about her situation that made her persevere.
  • I looked at my situation and thought, “maybe I can keep going too.”

Paul writes about several people who were called to serve over and over. These people were “tested” to be reliable when it came to serving GOD’s people. They were so eager in their service, they noticed the excitement of others. Their reliability was strange.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to be eager to help HIS people.
  • GOD wants me to place my confidence in other people who serve GOD with fervor.
  • GOD wants me to give my interests, skills and talent to HIM so HE can use them to bring other people back to HIM.

Bringing glory to CHRIST seems difficult at times. I mean, when I accepted JESUS as my Savior, I expected things to go smoothly all of my life. BUT GOD saw different. HE knew I would face difficult days where I felt like giving up.

GOD’s grace is truly sufficient. Without it, I would not be here. HE is the one who deserves attention and calls people to be reliable to HIS purpose. Each day HE wants people to get back up when they are knocked down by the world. I am glad GOD has called many to be reliable in HIS sight.

Challenge

  • What examples of reliability have you seen in your life?
  • Do you feel the excitement the writer states about people?
  • What is your life’s purpose?
  • Will you surrender your life to GOD so HE can entrust HIS purpose to you today?

Escalation

Escalation

2 Corinthians 8: 20 We are being careful not to stir up any complaints about the way we handle this generous gift. 21 Our purpose is to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of others.

============

“I’m going to tell!” was my go to set of words. This meant I could not handle the situation and I was going to escalate this to someone who could. I couldn’t fight, but I could tattle on someone. This particular day I tattled and the adult responded, “You are in trouble too.”

  • I didn’t realize my complaint was also a problem.
  • I was not careful about raising up a complaint to a higher authority.
  • I could only see a path to getting “that” person in trouble and did not realize I was in trouble too.

Paul speaks about being very careful not to stir up complaints. But who would the people complain to? He knew that his actions needed to be above the level because GOD would see what he did and validate the complaint if it were true.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to be very careful about complaining about other people.
  • GOD wants me to know HE sees and hears every deed that is done and every word spoken.
  • GOD wants me to tame my tongue to speak as few complaints as possible and exchange them for praise.

Thinking about the complaints I have said about other people over the years is embarrassing. I mean, if I were to escalate all my complaints to GOD and “that” person would die an eternal death because of my complaint, would I really complain? No. Unfortunately, I do not take complaints seriously enough.

I think I can whisper a complaint to a friend and think GOD did not hear it. Satan uses complaints to make his case against each human in an attempt to steal them from GOD’s love. He can’t do it by himself, so if he can use my complaint to help him out, he would gladly do so. I am grateful GOD gives me praise as a weapon to fight my complaining tongue.

Challenge

  • Why do you think the writer is careful about not stirring up complaints?
  • Where do you think complaints land?
  • What does it look like to do “right” in the sight of the LORD in your life?
  • Will you spit out your bitterness and trade your complaint in for an advocating prayer on the behalf of “that” person today?

Dear LORD, we apologize for raising petty complaints up to YOUR throne through the ears of other people. Please forgive us of our complaints. amen

Eagerness

Eagerness

2 Corinthians 8: 16 How we thank God for making Titus as eager as we are to help you! 17 Not only did he welcome our request; he was so eager to help that of his own free will he decided to go to you. 18 With him we are sending the brother who is highly respected in all the churches for his work in preaching the gospel. 19 And besides that, he has been chosen and appointed by the churches to travel with us as we carry out this service of love for the sake of the Lord's glory and in order to show that we want to help.

============

“Bring the groceries in from the car” was the directive. It was raining and cold outside and I was cozy and warm inside. I reluctantly obeyed. One of the bags tore, extending my discomfort.

On another day in another household a question was asked. “Would you like to go bowling with us?” “Yes!” was my enthusiastic reply. “Okay, but first unload the trunk to make room for the bowling balls.” I was eager to help even though it was raining and cold.

  • I could not see the blessing of simply being fed, housed and clothed.
  • I did not like being uncomfortable, so helping needed to be convenient.
  • I could not see the purpose of helping unless I got something out of it.

Paul writes about eagerness to help. He explain about a certain type of eagerness that comes only from the HOLY SPIRIT inside those who believe in JESUS as their Savior. This eagerness was to carry out HIS service of love to many others.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to be willing to serve others.
  • GOD wants me to be sent.
  • GOD wants me to accept the eagerness available to me to preach the Gospel of JESUS.

Eagerness to serve GOD is different. I mean, the “what’s in it for me?” turns into “What’s in it for GOD?” When it is cold and rainy and GOD says go and serve, HE loves when I am eager to be obedient. Unfortunately, I like the comfort and coziness of staying out of the rain and cold, so I sometimes act disobedient.

GOD understands. The great thing about HIS love is HE keeps coming after me, giving me another chance to get out of my comfort zone and seek to serve others. I am grateful HE is the beginning of eagerness and provides purpose for my life.

Challenge

  • Can you feel the writer’s excitement to serve?
  • Have you ever seen someone excited to serve you?
  • Has there ever been a contest, job or competition in which you were eager to work hard so you could get something out of it?
  • Will you allow the HOLY SPIRIT fill you up with overflowing love for others so you can be eager to serve on your own free will today?

Finish the Job

Finish the Job

2 Corinthians 8: 10 My opinion is that it is better for you to finish now what you began last year. You were the first, not only to act, but also to be willing to act. 11 On with it, then, and finish the job! Be as eager to finish it as you were to plan it, and do it with what you now have. 12 If you are eager to give, God will accept your gift on the basis of what you have to give, not on what you don't have.

============

“I will try to do that” or “I will get around to it” were words I used regularly to put off work or projects. Sometimes I did not know how to do the thing so it became overwhelming and I did not know how to ask for help. I would sit, dazed, not knowing how to finish.

  • I was eager to start, but did not know how to keep going.
  • I had great intentions, but did not have follow through.
  • I had wonderful plans but lacked completion.

Paul hits everyone between the eyes with a bold statement, “Finish the job!” Wow! These words were meant to encourage those who had started a long journey, serving the LORD. Somehow they became discouraged and some may have fallen away. BUT GOD had different plans.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to persevere through ambiguous or dark times.
  • GOD wants me to come out of hiding when I feel like I failed.
  • GOD wants me to live my life with purpose and finish the job HE has given me.

“I will try” is the procrastinator’s credo. I mean, I sometimes don’t know how to change directions or even know if I should. And when I find the thing I am supposed to do, I may start strong, but get weary, even if GOD told me to do something important.

Let me say, “GOD understands.” He wants us to take little steps to the bigger vision HE has for us. HE never gives us an assignment we cannot handle. HE choses to use broken people to speak about perfection, namely JESUS. I am glad GOD wants me to finish strong by speaking about HIS SON, JESUS, who is my Savior.

Challenge

  • What do you get out of the writers challenging words?
  • Is there something you started that you have been putting off?
  • Have you ever felt overwhelmed and did not know how to finish what you started?
  • Will you live your life with GOD’s purpose and allow HIM to provide you with the right resources, words and energy to finish what HE wants you to do for HIM today?

Jealous Moments

Jealous Moments

2 Corinthians 8: I am not laying down any rules. But by showing how eager others are to help, I am trying to find out how real your own love is. You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ; rich as he was, he made himself poor for your sake, in order to make you rich by means of his poverty.

============

Hearing when other people were promoted when I wasn’t made me think I was less than the recipients of the “honor.”. Hearing when other businesses got huge deals when I didn’t, I, again, felt less than other people. What was I missing?

  • I was comparing myself to other people.
  • I was vulnerable to try to be someone else rather than myself.
  • I was open to becoming frustrated with who I was; meanwhile I saw what other people were doing and got jealous.

Paul wrote about how blessed he was by another group of people who gave their all during extreme poverty. He did this to show the dedication other people had for JESUS. He wanted each reader to examine themselves and form their own dedication to CHRIST.

My Observations

  • GOD wants my relationship with HIM to be real.
  • GOD wants me to drop my jealousy in exchange for open eyes to HIS love.
  • GOD wants me to see that JESUS was not jealous rather confident that HIS love would save anyone who believed in HIS sacrifice.

Lack of confidence breeds jealousy which can breed all kinds of not so good actions. I mean, I may try to prove myself, or move too fast on opportunities, or cower in the corner alone, or worse, stop following GOD to follow humans who do not believe in JESUS.

HE had enough grace to make HIMSELF a human, giving up extreme power, while keeping that power in check. HE was raised from the dead after being murdered by HIS own creation. HIS patience, while being a human, was worth the wait as HE remained sinless all of HIS life. I am glad I do not have to be jealous over someone else’s relationship with HIM because HE loves me too.

Challenge

  • Why does the writer use the examples of others?
  • What is your reaction if someone challenges your relationship with JESUS?
  • Are you easily offended or is your relationship real enough to withstand those who scoff at your actions?
  • If you have been or are jealous of others or want other people to change, will you examine your own relationship with JESUS to see how real your own love is today?

Wealthy

Wealthy

2 Corinthians 8: It was more than we could have hoped for! First they gave themselves to the Lord; and then, by God's will they gave themselves to us as well. So we urged Titus, who began this work, to continue it and help you complete this special service of love. You are so rich in all you have: in faith, speech, and knowledge, in your eagerness to help and in your love for us. And so we want you to be generous also in this service of love.

============

“Want to play?” was the question posed to me. “Play what?” was my response. We were outside and had no games, money or toys. We looked around and found some popsicle sticks. A neighbor was washing his car, causing a stream near the curb in which we raced our sticks. We laughed, talked and played.

Later in life I accumulated money. I had no time for talking or playing because I was working long hours. I worried about bills, vacations, houses, cars, and a long list material possessions.

  • Somewhere I had lost focus on what “wealth” was.
  • I thought having no money was the problem.
  • I believed that having a lot of money would reduce my problems.

Paul writes about how “rich” the people were, but his list is strange. He talked about a portfolio most people would scoff at. He mentioned faith, speech, knowledge and eagerness to help.

My Observations

  • My love of money is the root of all kinds of evil in me.
  • GOD wants me to be wealthy in faith, speech about JESUS, curiosity to know HIM and eagerness to help others seek HIM.
  • GOD wants me to value serving others who follow HIM, especially those who are persecuted because of HIM.

Wealth is a term thrown around as something to acquire. But if the wealth causes division, arguments, pain or mistrust, then what good is having a lot of it? GOD wants me wealthy on the inside by accepting the HOLY SPIRIT.

HIS leading shows me when I am being greedy, overly self-protective and a slave to the god of sustenance. Generosity is felt by those who believe in CHRIST. I am grateful for the many who have poured out their service of love on me.

Challenge

  • What riches does the writer list?
  • Does comparing yourself to others make you, or them feel bad?
  • How wealthy in faith, speech about JESUS and knowledge of GOD do you feel?
  • Will you reconsider what true wealth is by seeking what GOD wants you to and surrendering anything that blinds you from HIS rewards today?

Self-Protection

Self-Protection

2 Corinthians 8: Our friends, we want you to know what God's grace has accomplished in the churches in Macedonia. They have been severely tested by the troubles they went through; but their joy was so great that they were extremely generous in their giving, even though they are very poor. I can assure you that they gave as much as they could, and even more than they could. Of their own free will they begged us and pleaded for the privilege of having a part in helping God's people in Judea.

============

Getting off the train, I proceeded on the shortest route to work. I was met with a number of people asking for money. I reached in my pocket and gave what I could, but I needed to eat lunch so I held some back. This went on for a few days. I figured out a solution. I would take a longer route to avoid the usual people asking for money.

  • I was concerned about “my” money.
  • I was concerned about “my” body being fed.
  • I was concerned about “my” time, resources and safety.

Paul is amazed at the generosity of a group of people in a certain area. Though they were poor, they were generous. Their generosity could not be stopped by their troubles. In fact, they gave more during their troubles, showing their joy.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to see beyond my troubles and be joyous.
  • GOD wants me to participate in helping HIS people.
  • GOD wants me to see that helping those who speak about CHRIST is a privilege.

Looking at situations from a financial perspective seems hopeless at times. I mean, it sometimes feels like the amounts I have or are getting are never quite enough. This makes me want to protect a little by stashing some away for “myself.”  Or “my” family. BUT GOD sees something different.

HE sees when I use self-protection as an excuse to not serve those who HE desperately wants me to serve. HE understands when I am blinded, but would prefer that I seek the privilege of serving to being people to CHRIST. I am grateful for those who have been generous to me to help me serve GOD’s people.

Challenge

  • How does the writer feel about the givers in this passage?
  • What do you notice about those who gave during their troubles?
  • Have you ever just wanted a moment of peace so you protected yourself from giving your time, talent or treasures?
  • Will you seek the privilege of serving GOD’s people in spite of your circumstances today?

Dependable Devotion

 Dependable Devotion

2 Corinthians 7: 12 So, even though I wrote that letter, it was not because of the one who did wrong or the one who was wronged. Instead, I wrote it to make plain to you, in God's sight, how deep your devotion to us really is. 13 That is why we were encouraged.

Not only were we encouraged; how happy Titus made us with his happiness over the way in which all of you helped to cheer him up! 14 I did boast of you to him, and you have not disappointed me. We have always spoken the truth to you, and in the same way the boast we made to Titus has proved true. 15 And so his love for you grows stronger, as he remembers how all of you were ready to obey his instructions, how you welcomed him with fear and trembling. 16 How happy I am that I can depend on you completely!

============

“Are you okay?” were the strange words from a guy from a church I had not attended in years. I can’t remember if I was okay or not. I was touched that he reached out to check on me after so many years. We caught up and I left the conversation encouraged.

  • I can’t remember the trouble of that time but I remember the encouragement.
  • I can’t remember what problem I was going through but I remember the devotion.
  • I can’t remember if things were going well or wrong but I remember the dependability.

Paul seems very excited about those who prayed for him and sincerely wanted him to keep spreading the valuable word of JESUS’ resurrection. This group was so devoted, they treated Paul’s friend Titus with love.

My Observations

  • GOD cares enough about me to send devoted people to me in my need.
  • GOD sees the troubles I go through and sends dependable people to comfort me.
  • GOD knows when I need encouragement and surrounds me with people who care about my servanthood to CHRIST.

Devotion to CHRIST is the love or enthusiasm shown to others because of HIM. I mean, many people are nice and there are causes that seem quite noble on the surface. BUT GOD has many people who are devoted to speak about HIS SON at a moments notice.

Their light is not hidden, rather it radiates in all they do. GOD has sent me many people who thoroughly bless me and others as they rise above complaints to provide encouragement. I am grateful for those who have been dependable and devoted to CHRIST. They taught me a lot.

Challenge

  • Can you imagine a group of people who are always dependable to encourage you?
  • What did the writer see in this crowd of people?
  • Do you need encouragement but cannot see the dependable crowd?
  • Will you be encouraged by this note and know you are special to GOD and HE sees you and loves you more than you know?

Healthy Sorrow

Healthy Sorrow

2 Corinthians 7: For even if that letter of mine made you sad, I am not sorry I wrote it. I could have been sorry when I saw that it made you sad for a while. But now I am happy—not because I made you sad, but because your sadness made you change your ways. That sadness was used by God, and so we caused you no harm. 10 For the sadness that is used by God brings a change of heart that leads to salvation—and there is no regret in that! But sadness that is merely human causes death. 11 See what God did with this sadness of yours: how earnest it has made you, how eager to prove your innocence! Such indignation, such alarm, such feelings, such devotion, such readiness to punish wrongdoing! You have shown yourselves to be without fault in the whole matter.

============

“I’m sorry” I said to the officer. “You are sorry for speeding or are you sorry you got caught?” was the reply. Actually I was sorry I got caught because I loved speeding.

  • I was going to speed again.
  • I was actually angry rather than sorry.
  • I was so fixed on speeding that after the ticket, I invested in a radar detector.

Paul speaks about two types of sadness, one that is repentant towards GOD and one that appeases humans. He focuses the believer, who wants to repent, on a sorrow that brings life.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to want HIM in my life.
  • GOD wants me to see HIS ways are perfect and mine are not.
  • GOD wants me to be sorry for my sinful ways and give them to HIM, for only HE can change my ways.

It is humbling to say “I am sorry to the LORD.” I mean, first I must recognize that I am the one in the wrong and need HIS mercy. If I think I am “good” or the one who needs the apology because HE created me, then I will not see HIS deliverance.

When I examine my life, I cannot be proud. I mishandle family, friends and situations all the time. I can say “Sorry” all day on a human level, and the faults will remain. BUT GOD is willing to forgive me and cleanse me of anything I have done or am doing or will do. JESUS death was perfection and my belief in HIS resurrection cleanses me of all unrighteousness. I owe my life to HIM.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the two types of sadness?
  • What, if any, things in your life can you ask GOD for forgiveness?
  • When you admit something to GOD, do you feel free?
  • Can you help raise people up from their hurt so they can see GOD as a being of forgiveness?

Encouragement

Encouragement

2Corinthians 7: Even after we arrived in Macedonia, we did not have any rest. There were troubles everywhere, quarrels with others, fears in our hearts. But God, who encourages the downhearted, encouraged us with the coming of Titus. It was not only his coming that cheered us, but also his report of how you encouraged him. He told us how much you want to see me, how sorry you are, how ready you are to defend me; and so I am even happier now.

============

When bad news came, it seemed to arrive in waves. People were dying or getting sick, arguments were popping up over little things and a feeling of being unsettled was in the air. “What is going on!?” I wondered to myself.

  • I have felt unsettled many times.
  • I have seen troubled people in many places.
  • I have been worried, scared and full of fear on many occasions.

Paul spoke about unrest. He wrote about troubles, quarrels and the biggest problem, fear that goes all the way down into the heart. There seemed like no relief was in site. The he wrote something amazing… “BUT GOD.”

My Observations

  • GOD sees the calamities I go through and encourages me during the problem.
  • GOD knows I will get downhearted and sends the right people at the right time to encourage me.
  • GOD feels my pain and anguish and wants me to be encouraged to keep going.

Serving GOD ain’t easy. I did say “ain’t.” I mean, when I believed that JESUS was and is the Savior who was raised from the dead, I became eter5nally saved. I wanted to tell other people. But I did not know there would be an adversary who wanted me to remain silent. Each victory of overcoming fear felt like it was met with a larger problem or a bigger fear.

At times I felt like giving up and conforming to the world. BUT GOD sent me people who encouraged me to keep going. HE wanted HIS SON to be spoken of by me and many others. HE lifted me up like a surefooted deer. I am grateful GOD thinks enough about me to encourage me when I am downhearted.

Challenge

  • Do you feel the pain the writer was going through?
  • What pain have you felt, or are feeling, that has or is bringing you down?
  • Do you know you are special and GOD wants you to remain encouraged because only you can reach the people HE wants you to reach?
  • Will you encourage someone today?

Praying for Everyone

Praying for Everyone

2 Corinthians 7: Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one; we have ruined no one, nor tried to take advantage of anyone. I do not say this to condemn you; for, as I have said before, you are so dear to us that we are always together, whether we live or die. I am so sure of you; I take such pride in you! In all our troubles I am still full of courage; I am running over with joy.

============

Today is a different day. It is about you. Some of you have told me of the troubles you are facing and some have remained silent and in pain. I just want you to know GOD hears you.

  • GOD sees your heart and loves you dearly.
  • GOD has seen the decades of prayers you have given to HIM and is pleased with you.
  • GOD knows you have spent hours not sleeping and is concerned about you.

Paul spoke about running over with joy because of those who made room in their hearts for others who speak about JESUS as the Savior. He went through a lot of trouble living for CHRIST. He was blamed for living for CHRIST but had a supportive cast who prayed for him.

My Prayer

Dear LORD, please guide this reader to a place of peace. No matter what poisonous words enter their ears, let the power of the HOLY SPIRIT guard the heart. Search us O LORD. Examine each of us individually and forgive us of our sins.

Please guide this child of YOURS today. Help this child let go of anything that builds a wall between YOU and him or her. Help bitterness, hatred, confusion, power seeking, lust, fear, addictions, greed, and disbelief in YOUR SON be taken away from your child.

Please give us the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. Help us think on the good YOU give and the truth YOU provide. Amen

Challenge

  • Do you see the heart of concern the writer has for the readers?
  • How many people can fit in a prayerful heart?
  • When you feel like complaining about a person, are they in your heart for “love?”
  • Will you pray for many people today and focus on listening to GOD’s soft, gentle voice today?

Repairing Self-Destruction

2 Corinthians 7:1 All these promises are made to us, my dear friends. So then, let us purify ourselves from everything that makes body or soul unclean, and let us be completely holy by living in awe of God.

============

Feeling like a failure, I needed some “fun.” With a mountain of debt, a broken down car, kicked out of school again and being dumped, I wanted to feel good for a moment. I went to a convention and there were wild parties everywhere. But for some reason, I could not get into it this particular time.

  • I thought I could relieve myself if I did some things that I could hide.
  • I felt like I was already low, so sinning wouldn’t make me any lower.
  • I wondered if there was an alternative to the self-destructive path I was on.

Paul speaks softly regarding purity. He doesn’t rant or yell, rather tries to convince everyone that JESUS made promises that were everlasting. These eternal promises should be recognized, but sin blinds us to that well deserved recognition. Paul give a better way of looking at purity. Be in awe of GOD.

My Observations

  • JESUS did an amazing thing by volunteering to die and be raised from the dead, just for me.
  • GOD’s mercy is amazing because HE sees the sin I hold onto tightly and still forgives me.
  • The HOLY SPIRIT amazingly lives in my body, seeing every thought and action and pleads on my behalf for forgiveness.

“Stop sinning” is easy to say when everything is going right. I mean, when the world seems to be falling apart, sin seems to knock on the door of my heart with its grimy hands at my most vulnerable time. BUT GOD sees all and loves me when I’m low.

HE understands every situation and cleanses me of all unrighteousness when I ask. But what if I ask and sin again? HE forgives me and cleanses me over and over and over and over and over again. He fills me with another chance each day and gives me a better path to walk on. I am in awe that GOD’s grace “is” sufficient.

Challenge

  • Does the writer limit the boundaries of purity?
  • Is there any difference between using slanderous words and sexual sin?
  • What do you notice about the individual walk implied in this passage?
  • Will you remain in awe of GOD’s forgiveness and allow HIM to cleanses you of all unrighteousness today and again tomorrow?

Decision Making

Decision Making

2 Corinthians 6: 14 Do not try to work together as equals with unbelievers, for it cannot be done. How can right and wrong be partners? How can light and darkness live together? 15 How can Christ and the Devil agree? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 How can God's temple come to terms with pagan idols? For we are the temple of the living God! As God himself has said,

“I will make my home with my people
    and live among them;
I will be their God,
    and they shall be my people.”
17 And so the Lord says,
“You must leave them
    and separate yourselves from them.
Have nothing to do with what is unclean,
    and I will accept you.
18 I will be your father,
    and you shall be my sons and daughters,
    says the Lord Almighty.”

============

Seeking advice from my colleagues seemed to be the right thing to do. When I asked them questions about how to live life, they had some great answers, or so I thought. Once, they suggested I sneak away from work to get drunk. Other times they would say, “just lie” or “borrow it from the store.” “Okay” was my reply. But something had to change.

  • I was headed down a dark path.
  • I was tired of trying to follow rules that did not seem to get me “ahead” in life.
  • I stepped away from following GOD so I could do what “I” wanted to do.

Paul says something quite harsh. He warns the believers of JESUS not to be influenced by those who do not seek HIM as their Savior. He is not saying believers are perfect, rather their decision making goes through a different filter.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to make decisions with the best information I have, namely HIS word.
  • GOD wants me to test my decisions by asking believers for prayer, guidance and inspiration.
  • GOD wants me to believe in JESUS and live for HIM so I can make decisions based on a life that inspires others to do the same.

Political thieves and power hungry people have sought to steal the precious name of JESUS. I mean, there are many complaints of the use of the word “Christian” because it is coupled with intolerance, impatience, ignorance and insulting behavior. Yes, I have done all the above. BUT GOD still wants me to speak on HIS behalf by learning about HIS love and aligning the message to HIM.

HE uses imperfect people to speak about JESUS, who was and is perfection. We cannot separate ourselves out of the world. Huddling around a bunch of people who look and act the same seems dangerous. GOD wants me to be in the world but not influenced by it. HE provides others who seek HIS face to encourage me and guide me. I am glad HE has many who follow HIM in all walks of life.

Challenge

  • What do you notice about the urgency of the writers words?
  • What suggestions do you have for someone who is trying to make decisions?
  • Will you seek a group of imperfect people who believe in JESUS as their Savior, to help you in your decision making or to help others live for HIM today?

Voluntary Open Heart Surgery

Voluntary Open Heart Surgery

2 Corinthians 6: 11 Dear friends in Corinth! We have spoken frankly to you; we have opened our hearts wide. 12 It is not we who have closed our hearts to you; it is you who have closed your hearts to us. 13 I speak now as though you were my children: show us the same feelings that we have for you. Open your hearts wide!

============

At one point, I would do anything it took for this particular organization. I would arrive early and leave late. All day long I focused on their needs, shunning precious time with family and most of all, GOD time. But one day the leaders of the organization changed for the worse as blame and insults became the norm. It was no longer the same place of merit and honor. My heart wasn’t into it as much.

  • My hurt heart was closing.
  • My eyes were opened to the blindness of “success.”
  • My feelings toward giving my all had changed.

Paul warns the people to open their hearts wide. His emphatic appeal was probably prompted by the dull reactions to the message he and others had provided through the words GOD placed in their hearts. He could see the people as they turned their hearts away from valuing the message that JESUS is LORD.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me keep my heart open to HIM.
  • GOD wants me to let the HOLY SPIRIT in my heart so HE can make room for others.
  • GOD wants me to appeal to others to voluntarily open their heart to JESUS so HE will send the COMFORTER to live in their heart.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” is what GOD said to one of the prophets to tell everyone. Since the heart is capable of hurting others or being hurt, it is easy for me to close it when I perceive the world around me is going to make things worse.

BUT GOD sends people to me that HE wants me to trust. Their message, while mixed with their sin, comes from HIM. GOD uses imperfect people like me to spread HIS perfect message of true love. I gladly open my heart to the HOLY SPIRIT and speak with flaws, but from the heart.

Challenge

  • What is the warning that comes from the writer?
  • Have you ever practiced closing your heart so often that you do not know what it looks like to have an open heart?
  • Why does the writer look at the group as his children?
  • Will you open your heart, knowing the HOLY SPIRIT will enter it and protect you from harm, especially from those who intentionally try to poison hearts today?

Becoming an Unstoppable Force

Becoming an Unstoppable Force

2 Corinthians 6: We are honored and disgraced; we are insulted and praised. We are treated as liars, yet we speak the truth; as unknown, yet we are known by all; as though we were dead, but, as you see, we live on. Although punished, we are not killed; 10 although saddened, we are always glad; we seem poor, but we make many people rich; we seem to have nothing, yet we really possess everything.

============

Walking into the meeting it felt surreal. For years, I had worked hard and done everything by the book, yet I found myself on my way out. Someone said an obvious lie about me that everyone disputed immediately. While I was protected by many, I was confused. “Why do liars seem to get their way?” I asked.

  • I felt weak and hopeless.
  • I felt like giving up because no matter how much right I did, those who did wrong seemed to win.
  • I felt that those who abuse power could disgrace, or insult or punish me at will.

Paul gave a “real” discussion. He put it out there that following GOD would sometimes be hard. He did not hold anything back. He spoke about people who would label the followers of GOD as a disgrace, liars, and unknowns who deserve punishment. BUT GOD saw something different.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to honor people who spread HIS word.
  • GOD wants me to praise those who follow JESUS as their Savior.
  • GOD wants me to look past being unknown and help those who are treated as dead to live on.

The world labels people who follow JESUS as weak, insignificant, unimpressive, intolerant, and sometimes uncaring. Unfortunately, many times this is true. BUT GOD sees things differently. HE knew believers in HIS SON would be persecuted.

In fact, JESUS said “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” HE knew HE would be lied on, slandered, abused and murdered. BUT HE kept going to live out HIS purpose. The main reason for trouble is to get believers to quit. Little does the enemy know, trouble strengthens. I am glad GOD picks me up when I fall.

Challenge

  • What do you identify with in this passage?
  • Have you ever been lied on or insulted or disgraced because of your relationship with GOD?
  • Will you look beyond the pain for a moment to help someone become that unstoppable force who will follow JESUS at all costs?

Servant Leadership

Servant Leadership

2 Corinthians 6: We do not want anyone to find fault with our work, so we try not to put obstacles in anyone's way. Instead, in everything we do we show that we are God's servants by patiently enduring troubles, hardships, and difficulties. We have been beaten, jailed, and mobbed; we have been overworked and have gone without sleep or food. By our purity, knowledge, patience, and kindness we have shown ourselves to be God's servants—by the Holy Spirit, by our true love, by our message of truth, and by the power of God. We have righteousness as our weapon, both to attack and to defend ourselves.

============

Tired of bullies and being a goody, goody, I decided to get into body building. This way I could be attractive and be ready to fight. The bigger I got, the more I realized there was always a bully who was bigger and stronger than me. I was preparing to fight the wrong battle.

  • I wanted to overcome frustrations by venting or fighting.
  • I wanted to fulfil my lusts.
  • I wanted to be seen as a strong leader based on the world’s definition.

Paul describes a life that is less desirable to many. It is a life dedicated to GOD’s service. He mentions that he was beaten, jailed, mobbed, sleepless and starving all for the sake of being a servant of GOD.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to patiently endure troubles, hardships and difficulties.
  • GOD wants me to focus on purity, knowledge, patience and kindness to be HIS example.
  • GOD wants me to show the love of the HOLY SPIRIT with the message of truth.

Being a pushover is not where GOD wants me. I mean, HE doesn’t want me gullible or unwise. HE knows the ways of the world require that I understand it, but not follow it. GOD’s kingdom is the only kingdom worth building.

HE loves when I surrender parts of my life solely for HIS purpose. HE then gives me HIS righteousness to attack injustice with peace and fight bullying, whether passive or overt, with love and truth. I gladly take on being a servant of GOD so HE may bring many back to HIS kingdom.

Challenge

  • Have you ever viewed your hardship, difficulty or trouble as the ministry GOD wants you to use as your ministry?
  • What do you notice about what the writer went through?
  • As a child, were you ever scared to do something so you asked an adult to help you?
  • Will you be that adult to someone and share how GOD is keeping your trial today?

Hour of Thanks

Hour of Thanks

2 Corinthians 6: In our work together with God, then, we beg you who have received God's grace not to let it be wasted. Hear what God says:

“When the time came for me to show you favor,
    I heard you;
when the day arrived for me to save you,
    I helped you.”

Listen! This is the hour to receive God's favor; today is the day to be saved!

============

“Say thank you” were the words I did not want to hear. The server did not know I had dropped my drink, causing me embarrassment. The food was free and it was a celebration but I was distracted because I drew attention to my mistake.

  • When I am worried or sad I forget about thankfulness.
  • When I am angry or frustrated I do not feel thankful.
  • When I am misguided, misinformed, embarrassed or sinning, being thankful seems to be the furthest thing from my mind.

Paul quotes what GOD told Isaiah to write. He mentions that GOD, in HS time, answered HIS promise and brought salvation. This very hour is the time to be thankful and accept HIS wonderful gift.

My Observations

  • GOD wants me to recognize what HE has done for me.
  • GOD wants me to look beyond current circumstances to see just how much HE loves me.
  • GOD wants me to be thankful this moment, instead of waiting for the perfect time.

“If then” statements can cause problems with my relationship with GOD. I mean, when I doubt that GOD loves me I may use “If then” statements like “If GOD loves people so much then why do people suffer/” My blindness does not recognize that the enemy is not GOD, rather Satan, who wants to blind me of GOD’s grace.

GOD’s grace is not to be wasted. No matter what is going on in my life, HE is always showing incredible grace. The HOLY SPIRIT opens my eyes to HIS grace in the middle of the storm. I am glad I can find peace that surpasses understanding by saying “Thank YOU LORD!”

Challenge

  • What does the writer mean by not letting GOD’s grace be wasted?
  • When calamity is striking, will you remember thankfulness as a weapon to fight it?
  • Have you received the very valuable gift of GOD’s salvation through JESUS and thanked HIM for HIS favor and help?

An Appealing Plea

An Appealing Plea

2 Corinthians 5: 20 Here we are, then, speaking for Christ, as though God himself were making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ's behalf: let God change you from enemies into his friends! 21 Christ was without sin, but for our sake God made him share our sin in order that in union with him we might share the righteousness of God.

============

Speeding tickets seemed to be the norm for me until one day I got one too many. “You need a lawyer” was the suggestion of the judge. I was unable to speak on my behalf to overturn the latest violation.  I needed someone who could appeal to the judge in a way that could be heard. “How do you plea?” was the question The lawyer spoke for me and used words that could be heard by the judge.

  • I was guilty but needed an advocate.
  • I was clearly in the wrong but needed someone to make an appeal.
  • I was on my way to being sentenced, but had someone make a plea to overturn the violation.

Paul is trying to make an appeal to overturn the thoughts of people who did not believe in JESUS. He spoke as though GOD HIMSELF were making an appeal. He then mentions how JESUS was without sin, but for our sake, HE was made sin so we could share in the righteousness of GOD.

My Observations

  • An appeal was made to me to guide my thoughts to JESUS.
  • When I believed that JESUS died for me and was raised from the dead, I became eternally saved.
  • I plead with others to open their eyes to the one true Savior, which is CHRIST our LORD.

Usually a plea is seen as a way to get “my” way. BUT GOD sees it different. JESUS not only gave up HIS life, HE pursues each and every one of us, pleading to keep us from harm. The HOLY SPIRIT begs on our behalf and GOD sends people to plea to turn to HIS ways. I am grateful for the people who prayed for me and pleaded on my behalf.

Challenge

  • Can you hear the plea from the writer?
  • Have you ever been in trouble and needed someone else to explain things on your behalf?
  • Will you make a plea on someone else’s behalf to turn to JESUS for all answers today?

Friendship Tool

Friendship Tool

2 Corinthians 5: 16 No longer, then, do we judge anyone by human standards. Even if at one time we judged Christ according to human standards, we no longer do so. 17 Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come. 18 All this is done by God, who through Christ changed us from enemies into his friends and gave us the task of making others his friends also. 19 Our message is that God was making all human beings his friends through Christ God did not keep an account of their sins, and he has given us the message which tells how he makes them his friends.

============

Forming friendships was not as easy as it seemed. I did not like people who ridiculed me, so at that time, I did not like many people. One friend, who I have known since kindergarten, looked beyond the items of ridicule and introduced me to other people who I call my friends to this very day.

  • I was accepted with my flaws.
  • I was not judged by human standards.
  • I was stretched to learn to like others I would not have normally gravitated to.

Paul uses a strange word when describing a pursuit of GOD. He used the term “friend..” At one point we were HIS enemy, but through CHRIST, we become HIS friend.

My Observations

  • GOD accepted me with all my sinful flaws.
  • GOD did not keep account of my sins because I accepted JESUS as my Savior.
  • GOD has given me the message to explain how to become HIS friend through CHRIST.

Being a friend to people is important to GOD, but in a different way. I mean, HE wants me to have a real relationship with HIM and enjoy HIS company enough to want to share HIM with other people. My earthly friends wanted to share friendship with people, so does GOD.

HE gives me an important message that all sins have been forgiven through JESUS and the relationship is totally healed by believing in the need to be forgiven by HIM. I gladly tell how to make friends with GOD, because HE showed HIS love to me.

Challenge

  • Do you see the genuine friendship expressed by the writer?
  • What does it mean to be an enemy of GOD?
  • What friendships have you formed over the years?
  • Will you accept the highest form of friendship by believing in JESUS so HE can give you purpose to make others a friend of GOD today?
